Your temperament and method of teaching with wisdom- slowing down-and the idea that it is okay to learn from making mistakes is so refreshing . Thank you for putting these lessons out- they (you) are very helpful and I appreciate it
Absolutely! Mistakes are okay to make because we will find something we didn't think before. If we all play correct then... no new creation! Many smart people always look for a quick answer before they actually do things. This way is not ideal for music and learning musical instrument. Thanks so much for sharing this. Thank you very much! So happy to hear that! You're very welcome! Glad to be helpful for people. I don't know everything about music but I know a few things with depths.
Learning melodies, not just scales with a one string approach is a great way to build the foundation for chord melody work. Upright bass players put a lot of time into learning scales on one string (for classical songs that require slurs and for soloing in jazz). to its natural for them. On guitar it would seem very useful to work on scales on one string and then scales and scale fragments on 2 strings (especially scale fragments).
Thank you as always! I'm an acoustic guitar builder and I spent most of the last 30 years just strumming chords, but one day a year ago a customer asked if I would play electric lead in a band. I said yes, so now I have to learn! I thought I had to learn 20+ years of guitar in a short time, talk about overwhelming. Until I ran across your channel I thought this was an impossible feat. Now I have the confidence to really give it a go. You have said, slow down, play simple, learn triads...etc. and I'm starting to get it, so thanks again I truly appreciate you.
You're very welcome! My pleasure! That would be so much fund! Single string lead guitar which is so much like singer approach! Glad to be helpful. Thank you so much for sharing! b
I play intermediate piano music and now everything on the guitar is starting to make sense. Why? Because you, Tomo San, are making it easy to understand scales as they apply to both guitar and keyboard. I've only been playing the guitar for 8 weeks but it took me 4 weeks to get some calluses (laughing). I was lost playing "dots" (tablatures) for 4 weeks when I should have been learning the names of those chords and keys that those dots represented. By knowing music scales, I can not only visualize the scale in my mind but I can now see them on my guitar neck. Now comes the hard part (smiling) ... learning how to apply my scales across the neck (vertically) versus up and down the neck. OH and, yes, I can easily play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on each string thanks to you. (chuckles) Play that funky music Tomo!
Thank you so much for sharing! So happy to hear that! Good job! One String Approach & Triad Inversions are the best learning the fretboard effectively. For me if I'm ever having a hard time figuring out a melody I go to the single string approach. It's just easier to see the notes. Like on a piano. Plus you get those slides so it sounds really fluid.

Just wanted to thank you for the videos on youtube and your WHOLE APPROACH to teaching. We can LEARN by LISTENING!! I just subscribed to your Guitar Wisdom page. I am grateful for your lessons.😊
Awesome, thank you! Listening... how to listen(?) So important! Thank you so much for subscribing my Guitar Wisdom! So you can learn more depths ... I am so thankful!
Ive been playing for a handful of years now with only internet as my teacher. This was very interesting as i am a player who only plays by eyes like you said in the video.
Thank you for sharing! If you only study your guitar from internet (free) then you need to be very careful what to take! Good stuff & junk stuff. Like foods... health style or junky style? Don't use your eyes! Then you are not using your ears. Learn as if you are blind person, that's what I am trying to teach all my students.
This is a great lesson, not only for beginners. This type of exercise is great for learning scales and intervals, muscle memory as well as fretboard familiarity. Even if you are just noodling, this type of playing can be beneficial. Thanks for another great lesson!
You're very welcome! Definitely, this approach is important for any levels, any years of experiences. No muscle memory! Familiarization! If I have my muscle memory then.. it's tough to follow what I hear things. Thank you for sharing!
Page 7 of Patterns Scales and Modes by Arnie Berle, 1994, first thing in the book! Went looking for it on my bookshelf after your last video on single-string scales. Knew I had it in a book somewhere. Have been studying it since. It is thought provoking and points out some of the things that were not as solid in my understanding as I thought.
This is so true. I played guitar for years learning the shapes but it wasn't until i started playing with other people i relaised the need to learn by ear rather than shape. Transpose songs by ear as well rather than loom for lessons online as it helps lean develop ones ear.
Dude,I really like the way you put it out there. Always fun,be open and relaxed and never stop figuring out what turns you on. This was my first look at you,it won't be my last. Seems like others also think you have an easy way about yourself. Of course you have spent a lifetime learning and practicing to achieve the easy,no stress style that you have. Thanks Craig.
Thanks so much! So happy to hear that! Originally I was so picky perfectionist so I had to change that feeling and attitude toward a little easy going but not forget to make a lot of efforts without expecting.
Think this way.. you were about to going your trip but the made your flight ✈️ cancelled.. no matter what you do… nothing will change until you will hold another seat on another day! No need to upset or work up unnecessary! Music & guitar … same thing! Nothing will change today or tomorrow but if you have a good plan and having a great work ethic then something will change later. So much fun!
This video taught me to focus on sounds, listening, by playing a scale using a single string. This way I can hear and feel the sound differences 😊. Thank you so much!
Such amazing wisdom here... I've been learning now for a year and wish I had come across your channel when I started! I'm spending time going back through your beginner lessons trying to relearn.
I really needed this. I am just learning guitar but I am very familiar with the piano and Music theory. The idea of learning the 1-string scale first is right up my alley as it connects with my piano keyboard theory knowledge. But even more importantly it will train my ear to tell my fingers where to go. Thanks😀😀 this is such a natural approach.
Glad it was helpful! That's it! Music Theory is Harmony... no need to just think with Guitar. Piano keyboard is good! So this way, you use Listening, Singing, Ear Training with it. You're very welcome!
Thanks again Tomo for sharing this video, I feel that getting the different scale sounds in my head and memorizing them all in different keys as one of the toughest things for me to learn. The Dorian scale especially for me has always been a bit tough to hear for some reason, I like the Les Paul and the Amp. your playing through sounds great! Thanks again.
You're very welcome! Try not to memorize! You will get tired. Try a few different keys. Dorian Scale is just b3 b7 compare to Major Scale. So try play G Dorian. R M2 b3 4 5 M6 b7 R.... Simple... super slow! Stay each note 2-3 seconds with no rhythm. Enjoy the depth of colors intervals notes characters! I love this guitar! Thank you so much!
I'm always amazed I can get elite level guitar lessons from a true master just sitting in my couch. I've already been playing around with this concept, and for some reason I find it easier to figure out melodies on one string. I usually figure something out by ear on one string then have to figure out how to play it in one position. I think it's because I can see the intervals between notes easier, like on a piano. But now I get to chew on this video for awhile and learn all this stuff and have it expanded on by you. Amazing. Thank you so much.
I dont want to learn too qui kly, but i'd still like to play like this even on one string....i need to get myself into your wisdom class. I don't know about music but i know this sounds like magic...

@@jdalend Thank you for sharing! Don't worry! Just need to recognize intervals in chords & melody! That's so easy to learn. Almost you just learn how to put labels on each item. I teach more details with slower pace at my Guitar Wisdom. I teach all levels. Thank you!
I've started doing this for a while. Very helpful. Learning to finger the scales in different ways and trying not to look as much as possible. Then two strings and their relationships. Fourths. Fifths. Play 4ths as a scale and then flatten or raise a note on one string or the other. Like on 7ths or 2nd positions in minor. Or elsewhere. Then the G and B string are their own little world. Over time blend the 3 strings I guess. Plenty of things to learn.
@@TomoFujitaMusic I just finished the video and it may be one of my favorites. I know I will have fun on the guitar tomorrow when I can explore some of these concepts!

@@TomoFujitaMusic such positivity you are giving and receiving the years of teaching have made you a better teacher!! you have more patience you seem to be in a better place?.. Here's to happy times
This is really great and encouraging. As a feel guitar player, with a formal saxaphone foundation, this is really help especially on the scales. This is the first time I’m hearing something other than major and minor and getting it. I’ve stumbled upon them here and there soloing over interesting chords and changes but never knew what it was called. When you said “playing from the heart rather than your eyes” it really hit me. I’ve always felt that and hearing someone from Berklee say it is freeing.
Glad it was helpful! Playing by feel is so important but when you are learning... need to use more brain than feel. Once you know what to do then switch from brain to your heart! You can play any scales, any arpeggios on One String / One Finger so you can think each note name/function/sound... Any solo you transcribe... you can analyze with your knowledge which is theory/harmony/ear training
Thank you so much for your life work and dedication and sharing it with others. I've been watching videos for 2 years but I feel I am very disorganized. I think I have to start from square one. I have too many subscriptions and and trying to do too much at once. I just like your philosophy and I think it would be best to start with one note at a time, thanks
You're very welcome! Thank you for sharing! Don't compare! Be kind to yourself! Don't worry! Don't expect too fast! Maybe it's time to focus on less items and go for more depths so you don't just quick satisfy yourself. I like simplicity & limitation so that I can make something my way. (new)

Thank you so much! So happy to hear that! You're very welcome! My pleasure! I love that Les Paul! Because I did my custom order to Gibson Custom Shop. So they did choose lighter wood for me.
I need to start doing this more in my practice sessions. I will say I do a solo in Come Together thats mostly on the D strings. Sounds really cool with the hammer on and pull offs
Generally, I work with guitar then I enjoy with guitar. This is my job so I have to practice super boring exercises first even 10 minutes everyday. Then I practice on playing. So when I plug my guitar... I just don't play anything. Just tune up... and practice techniques first. Then playing begins... Then try using more rhythm on your soloing. When to start? What's each phrase duration? Enough rests so that listener can digest your phrasing? Record yourself 3-5 minutes a day... this can improve you so much!

I would like to learn from the perspective do ra mi , always remember that song from The sound of music.... I think that looking at it from the perspective of flavors or colors on a palat. Your philosophy is also very helpful... Be happy with where you're at, but I don't want to be complacent either... I'm sorry to disrespect you with my screen name maybe I should do it from my real name profile.... I once again thank you for the new video
You're very welcome! Thank you for sharing! Good job! This video is super important about how to learn scales proper way, not just shapes as visually. Yes! First I am so thankful with what I already have! No worry! Please watch this video a few times! You can change your approach. If you are musician, then use simple name so people would recognize you.
One of the big differences for me is that you are learning intervals and how they sound. I know lots of guitarists who think they are pretty hot lead players who would fall all over themselves just trying to play the melody of Happy Birthday or Mary Had A Little Lamb. Not because they don't know the melody. Everyone knows those melodies. But all they learned on guitar was physical patterns and not so much sounds. It's a great exercise to learn how to play a melody given a key or a starting note. To do this your ear must recognize intervals and your guitar playing must know how to find those intervals on the neck,
Hello. I wonder if you can make a video about some guitar method books for beginners to learn guitar theory. That would be a blessing because there are a lot of materials and for beginners is almost impossible to choose something. They tend to try multiple methods and end up learning almost nothing because of having no structure to learning. If you could recommend 1 or 2 book that we should stick to until the end it would be awesome. Thank for your amazing videos and teaching. Have a nice day
Yes! Great request! I already made those series of detail lessons at my Guitar Wisdom. You can join there. So definitely you will improve! I already made "Sight-Reading" section with Berklee Modern Method Guitar Volume One. Entire book! You can learn all those too. You're very welcome! Thank you!
Love your videos you sound so amazing! I am on vacations and is the first time the last 5 months after i subscribed to guitar wisdom that 4 days have passed and i havent play guitar! (I play everyday). My question is that in your videos you always starting the one string one finger approach from the root in the fret that is convinient in the start of the neck! When i want to practise C for example at different string should i know for example at the G string that the A note is the 6th degree of Cmaj and start from there! In other words should i know the notes of the scale and in every string the first note of the scale that comes up and start from there to practice this approach in other string! Because this has a bit of memorization work especially if i must learn alot of keys like that! I tried to take the triads that i learned and start from r 3 5 and go up and down a little bit! I hope i wasnt to complicated and didn't tired you. Thanks for everything.
So happy to hear that! Thank you so much! Good job! To learn basic scale, you can start from root note. Then you can start any note at any strings. G string then just start from G A B C D E F G So 5th degree of C Major scale to start. Still you can hear C chord behind it. Not at all! Simple! We are still playing C Major scale but starting at different note. That's all. You're very welcome! Please watch this video. I Wish All My Students Knew THESE Before They Came To Berklee ua-cam.com/video/xlRy7WwZg7c/v-deo.html
Master Tomo, I don't think many people understand why the C Scale first. I attempt to explain it with: It is all the White notes on a piano. One learns the C Scale then when learning the G Scale there is only on note different. Learn G Scale and you have 80% of most Rock Songs. Next is D Scale. Only 2 notes different from C Scale. So you see, C Scale is kinda like a Foundation. Learn the instrument - Learn the Notes. Then you can play most any song. Also, very important to Say the notes Out Loud. Be well...
Thank you so much for sharing! Good job! I think what I have seen... Before teaching C Major scale, most guitar teachers show a shape of A minor Pentatonic Scale in two octaves! That will make many guitarists stuck same level of playing for many years to come! Yes! Say each note C D E... then think & feel about each intervals. Then you are adding Ear Training aspect on C Major scale. A minor pentatonic shape is like eye exam!
Yes. They learn patterns then stuck for 30 years. They did that to us in Violin 50 years ago. They taught us to sight read. It caused very mechanical playing. Might as well been a robot. No emotion in it. Just play the written notes. That actually made it hard for me to learn guitar. I would read music and finger like a violin. I had to convert. I still arppegiate notes, not chords, like a violin. We didn't have chords. Just double stops. Take care Dear Friend. Be Well.
So correct! Then they buy more gears to distract the fact. You needed a teacher who can suggest your notes to have more feel & emotion. Very cook experience you had! Thanks so much for sharing! Have a great weekend! @@Jack.Waters

Have you ever wondered why the "inventors" of written music decided on an 8 note scale instead of 7? Your 7 note scale would end at F instead of G. G would cease to exist. But you are still using the same amount of 1/2 steps to get through the scale. Do you suppose it was to make chord progressions easier to write? A 7 note scale would use all full steps. So, a 1/4/5 progression would become A-C#-E#. It would be a 1/3#/4# progression instead. Wierd things run through my head at 3 in the morning. Maybe it has something to do with the difference between written music for string and brass & woodwind instruments? Maybe there is a music theory genius out there that has a good explanation? 😮😮😮
Great question! I enjoy music first and I use this tool "Theory" to analyze what I hear, what I play... then I can organize my thoughts so that type question. I don't think too much why. Thank you so much for sharing!
I too enjoy music 1st. But after playing for 40+ years, my mildly arthritic fingers can only endure about 45 minutes of practice per day. That leaves a lot of excess day to ponder oddities....lol. I also find that my wife is considerably easier to get along with if I don't wake her up at 3am with my noodling. Sometimes I wake up with a song in my head that I have to let out before I can get back to sleep. In all serious though, it is a question that has intrigued me from childhood. I've had about 55 years to ponder that question but have not come to any conclusions. Obviously, it really doesn't matter. We have the system that we have. Nobody would dare try to introduce something different at this point. It's just one of those odd little thoughts that pop into my brain at quiet times... Thanks for your videos! I really enjoy seeing your passion for teaching others.
Thank you for your reply! Have you ever try Chromatic Scale on 4th string 3rd string only for 10 minutes everyday? This will help your fingers. We all have so many questions. You can a little by little. Maybe try to learn more songs & chords by ears and analyze them for fun! Thank you so much! I love teaching! So much rewarding!@@nohillforahighstepper
I’m not sure I can see the real value in this. Tomo is clearly a master guitarist though so who am I to say. I know this, I also know many scales In the usual 3 note per string l. I still get completely lost at times, I feel like I will never intuitively know all the notes like I do on a piano. Guitar is such a confusing instrument.
Thanks for sharing. That's one of common approaches and it's very useful for sequencing on top 1&2... but if you play all 3 notes from 6th string... then it makes patterns. Some people think one of those as Dorian scale... that's a little dangerous to learn that way. You can get stuck easily on same level of improvisation skill. Try 3 notes on One String... Go by steps... Do Re Mi, Re Mi Fa, Mi Fa So... or Do Mi Re Fa Mi So... etc. On One String ONLY! Try it! Nothing to lose! Everything is unknown until you really do it!
Guitar can be learned two ways: 1) Quick with visual shapes and stuck forever, no improvement! 2) Learn One String Approach. Feel like takers forever, then this will improve you later. Very simple as results.

Wonderful lesson! Thank you so much. More Dexter please 🙏
Yes! More to come! Thank you!
Yes, Dexter is very inspiring 👏 😉
I was taught not teach this way at music store because they lose their students! I was shocked!

For me if I'm ever having a hard time figuring out a melody I go to the single string approach. It's just easier to see the notes. Like on a piano. Plus you get those slides so it sounds really fluid.

This is a great lesson, not only for beginners. This type of exercise is great for learning scales and intervals, muscle memory as well as fretboard familiarity. Even if you are just noodling, this type of playing can be beneficial. Thanks for another great lesson!

Thank you for sharing! One String One Finger Approach is good!
This is so true. I played guitar for years learning the shapes but it wasn't until i started playing with other people i relaised the need to learn by ear rather than shape. Transpose songs by ear as well rather than loom for lessons online as it helps lean develop ones ear.
Good job! You got it! Problem is people so used to google things!
Dude,I really like the way you put it out there. Always fun,be open and relaxed and never stop figuring out what turns you on. This was my first look at you,it won't be my last. Glad to hear it! Thank you so much!
I will definitely try that the b7 is a little tough for me to hear but I will practice slowly till I get it. Thanks again Tomo.
You should practice one string approach with super slow pace!
Thank you so much! So happy to hear that! One String One Finger = No confusion. You're very happy with!

@@TomoFujitaMusic ah yes this is good advice. I always shy away from learning theory thinking I’ll lose the feel.

To do this your ear must recognize intervals and your guitar playing must know how to find those intervals on the neck,
Thank you for sharing! Intervals are so important! This way, name of notes, intervals, colors, Ear Training! So good!

G string then just start from G A B C D E F G
So 5th degree of C Major scale to start. Still you can hear C chord behind it. Not at all! Simple! We are still playing C Major scale but starting at different note. That's all. You're very welcome!
Please watch this video.
I Wish All My Students Knew THESE Before They Came To Berklee
ua-cam.com/video/xlRy7WwZg7c/v-deo.html

I think you need a good time sleep!
Guitar can be learned two ways:
1) Quick with visual shapes and stuck forever, no improvement!
2) Learn One String Approach. Feel like takers forever, then this will improve you later.
Very simple as results.
I don't have a lot of money at the moment. But on friday, im definitely donating to this guy.
I don't know if it's his temperament . But I've learned more about how the guitar works this weekend than the entire previous two years.
I just worked out major minor 3rds. semitinones.how do re mi works. Because he showed me a video. Maybe i was the right place at the right time?
There's a difference between understanding the words he is saying and what they actually means. I think i understand why the guitar has 6 strings.
I literally feel like a kid. It's been a long time since i really learned something.
I must've thanked him 15 times this weekend.
I never leave a video of confused or without learning something .
If you are going to pay someone on youtube for guidance. It's tomo. He has a knack for teaching.
There's only one other person I'd pay, and im not telling you who it is. Similar temperament.
Thanks again.
Listen to this guy!
Thank you for sharing! Please watch this full video 23 minutes so you will understand something! Let me know after you watch this video a few times. Thank you!
