He Doesn't Hate Me, He Hates My Work! - Ep. 35 of Intentionally Blank

- This episode begins with Dan talking about his “friendship” with Christopher Lloyd and the strange round-a-bout way the “I’m Not A Serial Killer” movie came into existence. Typical meanderings should be expected.

Adam here. Had an issue with Dan's video file. Was told by Brandon that if it ever happened that I should use a picture of a panda in Dan's normal place. Your guess for why is as good as mine.
If there should ever be a malfunction with Mr. Brandon’s camera, could his animal be a walrus please? I think that irony would be fantastic.
Behold: PANDAN
*your
Not to be pedantic.
@@snow-shod9942 Pretty sure it's panda-ntic in this case.
How majestic. So incredibly brilliant
"When we film Mistborn..."
That's all I needed to hear. Thank you Brandon.
Dan's transformation into a were-panda is complete. He will now loaf around and eat bamboo at every full moon.
The furry panda is a noble creature, known for its excellent chess-playing skills. Pandas often play chess in exchange for lederhosen, which make up a large chunk of their preferred diet. They also make a fortune off their licensing deals, in which they shrink and stuff members of their clan and sell them as plush toys for young children. It is often theorized that one day all of these plush pandas will decide to rise up and rule the world. And that will be fun, because pandas rock.
As the world's #1 panda fan all of this information is completely false and I am highly offended by it. The panda clan will hear of this. Don't be surprised if they press charges for libel. All hail our panda overlords, may their coming empire be long and prosperous.
@@jennyraylen8410 But how can this information be false? It comes directly from one of Mr. Sanderson’s own books!
(Pandas are my favorite animal too! 🐼🖤🤍)
@@LucysLocket wait does it really come from one of his books lol 😂
@@jennyraylen8410 It really does! I can’t remember whether it was Alcatraz vs. the Knights of Crystallia or Alcatraz vs. the Shattered Lens, but it’s definitely in his Alcatraz series!
(And all of the information is proclaimed false later in the chapter, so have no fear of insulting the pandas with this blasphemy)
@@LucysLocket That's amazing lmao. Now I need to read Alcatraz xD
It's so exciting when Brandon says things like
"When we film Mistborn"
I had to chuckle when Dan said it was 40 below, and then made it very clear that was -40 Fahrenheit not -40 Celsius
Spoiler: they're the same 😊
I tidbit of knowledge I had only recently learned!
However you measure it, I can speak from experience that it is COLD. 😂
"When we film Mistborn, I will be on set." Hmm you alluding to something Brandon? :) I know hes already working on a script but that sounded more solid than an if we film Mistborn
I mean ambition and self confidence are pretty defining traits for Brandon. Also I see why he doesn't want to say anything about adaptations until things are solid if people pay so much attention to things like this.
“Please let me pretend you’re a high school student”
I always knew Dan was into some weird stuff.
Lmao
yet he wouldn't let his face be licked
Brandon was barefoot for his chat with Daniel Greene...Master & Pupil and loads of weird stuff vibes this one time....
The coke is the reason why Dan’s video file got “corrupted”
It's weird thinking back now on my experience with these two. I randomly watched I Am Not a Serial Killer when I saw it at a Redbox. I really liked it and went and bought the blu-ray and then read the book.
Then like a year later, I was standing in the sci-fi section of Barnes and Noble looking for The Forever War. This stranger comes up to me and tells me that I should read Brandon Sanderson. She said her son moved away to another state but reading and discussion his books are something the two of them do together to bond.
I had never read fantasy before, but I bought the trilogy boxset of Mistborn on Amazon and enjoyed The Final Empire. I then read TWoK and it's my favorite book I've ever read.
Almost five years later and I've read most of Brandon's work and have gone to college to be a writer because of what Mistborn and TWoK did to me.
"At times is was 40 below. Fahrenheit!" Coincidentally the only temperature where you don't need to specify the scale.
Fun fact: When it's 40 below, you don't have to specify Fahrenheit because that is where the two scales are equal.
Woah, Dan is looking extra cuddly toda-- wait a minute!
Gentle correction, the movie was filmed in Minnesota, not Michigan. I only care to say so because Virginia MN is near my hometown and it was kind of a big deal when they were filming, and I needed to agree that our winters are brutally cold.
Wow! Mr. Dan has changed his snow leopard blanket for a panda blanket!
As that strange reader who only reads like 5 authors, the two of which that I reread the most being Brandon Sanderson and Dostoevsky, I am now motivated to read Dan's stuff.
If you haven't picked it up yet, I Am Not A Serial Killer is pretty good.
IMDB: "Robbie Ryan is an Irish cinematographer. He is best known for his work in Fish Tank (2009), Slow West (2015), Amercican Honey (2016) and The Favourite (2018) for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Achievement in Cinematography."
35:00 See? The actors for the show were perfect! I don’t blame them at all for how it turned out, I only feel bad they didn’t have better material to work with. They really could have shone in a decent adaptation!
I loved the actors almost completely. They did their best, even in parts where the rest of it wasn’t my favorite
How that night shoot was described is what I’m hoping doesn’t happen for my shoot next week
That anecdote about the WOT actors was hilarious and soooo in-character hahaha
The panda image change was hilarious 😂
I'm imagining the panda talking in Dan's voice, don't mind me.
Never Write a Scene Like That Again would also be an excellent podcast title.
I have so much fun with these. Thank you for these :)
Is it weird that the panda kind of reminds me of Dan anyway?
Brandon Sanderson, I consider you the stepfather of Wheel of Time, and seriously appreciate all the work you put into it. I'd love to sit and chat with the two of you sometime, this podcast is a riot!
Dan Wells looks wonderful. I think it will be nice to spend a day up close with a panda.
32:23 "When we film Mistborn, I will be there on set"
Is it official then? Anyone has a more concrete source?
How did you get the Chinese government to sponsor Dan's appearance for this episode?
Saw the “I’m Not A Serial Killer” movie trailer and found it really interesting. It's a shame I can't find it anywhere to watch on my region.
Dan being a paDANda makes so much sense!
For the first 15 minutes I was confusing Christopher Loyd with Christopher Lee, lol
Me too lol
Dan's looking cute
What a beautiful way of portraying Dan
I absolutely love the how the panda pictures keep changing lol
I stopped this about half way through, grabbed the audio book of I Am Not a Serial Killer, listened to it, then came back. So maybe give more spoiler warnings, because each one might get you some sales.
As an aside, really good book. I enjoyed it a lot and am looking forward to watching the movie.
I knew Dan was a furry, glad the surgery went well!
Fun fact, at 40 degrees below zero, the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales cross. As such, it doesn't matter whether you say -40 F or -40 C. They're the same.
I believe the film Dan was mentioning was The Favorite by Yargos Lanthimos, which is a fantastic film.
Every time the panda picture changes I laugh!
What a twist in the finale of this podcast !
I think Dan would love You.
I can't do that show it makes my brain feel awful, but from what I've gathered, that's totally Dan
It would be awesome to see you two do Hot Ones...just putting it out there
I watched the _I Am Not A Serial Killer_ movie before I read the book. I really liked it.! The cast were super solid, and the plot and the pacing were also very well done.
Having read the book, I think maybe the one place where the movie falls short is in fleshing out John's relationships with people. There are some arguments with his mom and conversations with Neblin that got left out that I adored in the book.
Anyway, to all of you who haven't seen it, it really is a solid movie. You can rent it on Amazon for less than five bucks.
The panda demands my attention 😍
Someone's pulling some shenanigans with that Rand/Mat/Perrin story
That's literally what happened with the Harry/Ron/Hermione actors, including the part where it was Rupert's idea, and especially including the part where everyone took it as meaning that they did a good job casting them
33:00 Ah, so that’s where all the show’s budget went!
Here is a name for the podcast: Tangents and More
Feeling the Michigan winter right now, sucks so much
Behold.....PanDan
Danda.
Good heavens, I remember that Michigan winter. It was really awful.
19:02 - favorite temperature fact but 40 below Fahrenheit is also 40 below Celsius so your clarification was technically unnecessary as -40 K doesn't exist and it could not be -40 R as an ambient temperature in MI :)
Dan telling us that serial killers are far more prevalent than we used to think... that's gonna keep me awake at night 😬
Hey. This movie sounds really interesting. What is it rated?
Sanderson should cameo as the Dark One in WoT.
Im going to have to read some of dans books. Being similar to Russian literature is a selling point for me.
As an Oklahoman with a sci-fi book set in small-town Oklahoma as well, I approve of the book 5 location ;)
"The Secret Agent" is from Joseph Conrad.
I literally got a David Farland ad 🤣
Amanda the Jedi suggested a crossover between You season 4 and Emily in Paris season 3
is "The Secret AGent" by Dostoyevsky or Joseph Conrad?
Do why did Dan not want to come on camera this time?
update: should watch the first 3 mins next time :(
Adoooonalsiiiiium
25:37 obligatory "Fahrenheit or Celsius?"
I love you brandon
A family that we grew up with were Christopher Lloyd's cousins...
Actually Dan, I think your Dostoevsky pitch was quite compelling. I'm going to go read the Secret Agent when I'm done with the I Am Not a Serial Killer series. :D
I could be wrong but I could swear The Secret Agent, about two bumbling spies /terrorists in London, was actually by Joseph Conrad. I think Dan got his wires crossed.
I looked it up and you're right. Thanks ;)
Hm, that movie thing is happening in the game industry too
35:50 that is 100% matt!
Actually the comparison between I am not a serial killer and Dostoevsky really makes me want to read it.
I never heard of this book and movie.
As a big Sanderson fan I am hoping someone can give me a good Dan Wells book to start with. Between the podcast and the con stuff I've heard quite a bit of his works but not really sure what might fit. Already have the Dark Ones comic. I read most fantasy and sci-fi, but give me something to try! Recommendations from Wells fans?
Honestly, start with "I am not a serial killer." Even though some of the big reveals (for the 1st book) are talked about a fair bit on the podcast, they've never really talked about character motivations (other than Cleaver) or details about why the monster works so well, which are why it's one of my favorite series. I read it after hearing spoilers on Writing Excuses, and I still really enjoyed it and have reread it as well.
Am I looking too much into Brandon saying "WHEN we film Mistborn..." and not 'IF we would film Mistborn'... 🤯
Is this the script he is working on maybe? One can only hope. 😁
He has time and time again mentioned that he has been trying to get something from script to screen, but that every project ends in development hell. It's too bad :(
I know he's writing a screenplay for the final empire but I think he's been working on it for several years so it's probably gonna be a while
I actually really enjoy the pandas tbf
Dostoyevsky's Secret Agent only a third as funny as Conrad's Secret Agent. #fact
Dan "Werepanda" Wells
Dan, the coke loving panda!
Why is Dan a Panda? XD
And why is he munching on bamboo shoots ? 😂
Uuuuh, he writes novels for a living, duuh....XD
That depends, is he owned by the Chinese Government?
Dark comedy is still comedy.
Maybe even the best comedy.
I actually love Dostoyevsky so it’s a great pitch!
FUN FACT!!!
-40 Fahrenheit is actually the same as -40 Celsius
That’s in reference to a clarification made lol
Omg, it is a PanDan!
I see warbreaker!
Dan’s camera broke?
Imagine owning one of Brandon's 5,000,000 signed books.
Hey Dan -40 degrees is the same in both C and F.
40:20 The Favourite?
PDanda is God
Panda panda panda panda
Interesting
Wow, Dan has put on some weight! Hang in there, Covid weight is real. :D
33:28
...is Dan okay?
Brandon and Danda
27:25
Why is Dan a panda?
Pandas are very special cretures. So difrent from his brother bears who eat meat and have brown color. Im surprised is not a pet for evefywone yet. That will end the extinchon problem.
Come on guys... with triangle money, you should be able to afford better equipment for the show. Like a real live Panda for example. ;P
It could sit on his other shoulder opposite Magellan.
31:30
How does Dan know John DeLancey?
Dan told the story a couple of episodes back (28, I think?). IIRC, John de Lancie apparently really liked his book and e-mailed him to try to make a play out of it. The play never happened, but they became friends.
@@WordSarien That's awesome!
