Up until Murase, the game has been pretty smooth sailing. However, he introduces two new mechanics. Deadly Attacks and Mortal Wounds. Whenever a boss's aura flares up, they are about to perform a Deadly Attack. These moves are unable to be blocked by any means, but they can be negated by using EX Burst (just expect the EX Meter to cry), dodged, or interrupted by using a wall attack before the attack goes through. Should Yagami take a bit from a Deadly Attack, not only will he take a lethal amount of damage, but he will also be inflicted with a Mortal Wound. Mortal Wounds signify actual damage to Yagami, such as broken bones, gashes, or bullet wounds. These Wounds, unlike normal damage, are unable to be healed using food or drink, effectively reducing Yagami's max HP. The only ways to heal Mortal Wounds are by using an actual medkit, or by visiting a doctor. Neither of these options are cheap, however. As implied earlier, getting shot or stabbed will also cause Mortal Wounds, so take out gun and blade users first during a fight.
Really signifies that Yagami is _not_ Kiryu, he ain't some superhuman capable of eating twelve gunshots to the chest and still trucking. He's much closer to just being a normal guy (I say closer because Heat, which all the EX thingamajigs are also derived from, is a canonical part of the verse, so anyone capable of using it is generally not "normal" by default, by our standards).
