    I try out the Boss AC-3 and Mooer Acoustikar acoustic guitar simulator pedals. Don't ask me which I prefer, I still can't decide!

    Thanks Felix - great review and playing! Really clearly explained. It's always hard to know exactly what it will sound like in your own situation, but based on what I'm hearing here, I think I may prefer the way the Mooer sounds in terms of replicating an acoustic guitar. I agree with another comment below that the AC-3 sounds more like an archtop. However, I would still choose the AC-3 for the dual outputs, so I can send the acoustic output to the PA and the bypass output to my amp, which is a great feature.

  • @andresilvasophisma

    Really nice review! Till now I had been pretty determined that AC-3 sounds less simulated and has overall better dynamics. However the comparison between the strat and Ibanez was very interesting. With that fat humbucker of the 8 string Ibanez, the mooer ended up sounding much better in my opinion. That means it also matter what guitar you're playing. I play a Gibson sg and now I'm thinking, the fat low end sound might pair better with the mooer - thanks for the review.

    • @FelixThiang
      @FelixThiang  6 років тому

    • @heneverwrote

      Felix Thiang - Guitarist So I ended up with the ac 3 and I gotta say I’m new to stuff like this. I don’t mind the sound - but here’s the thing - I put it in the fx loop of my blackstar ht5r and had to totally turn down the body knob since the amp is already adding extra low - in fact if I turn up the body knob, the sound becomes very distorted and unpleasant.
      Here are some questions - do you use this pedal’s amp out option into your amp or do you use the line out option into a pa (for a live setup I.e) ?
      Also,does you pedal have a slight hiss ? My one is creating this weird scratchy sound when I run my pick on the strings (wondering whether they tried to simulate acoustic string squeak ?)
      Will appreciate your feedback.

    • @FelixThiang
      @FelixThiang  6 років тому +1

      Ashraful Khan As per my video (top left corner), I use the Guitar Amp Out into an amp simulator into a PA system. I probably wouldn’t start with putting it in the effects loop, you bypass the preamp and go straight to the power amp by doing that. That means you bypass the eq knobs, I think any reverb you have on the amp is then sent to the ac3 to process and the valve preamp sound (driven sound) is also sent to the ac3... which I imagine can have weird effects (you are turning the fully processed sound from your amp into an acoustic tone). I think what you want is to have the pedal in the front of your chain so Its like plugging an acoustic guitar into the front of your amp (into a clean channel). When you do that, I would start with all settings at 12 o’clock to begin with (perhaps 12 o’clock on your amp settings as well, even volume as the more volume you have on a tube amp the more drive/crunch, reverb as desired but I’d turn it off and see what it sounds like first). Rather than play with the ac3’s body knob to adjust eq, use your amp’s eq to tweak your tone. At that point you should have a simulated acoustic guitar into the front of your amp, which isn’t designed for acoustic guitars so your mileage on whether you like it may vary. I would have thought it’d be fine though, as long as you don’t crank the volume up to go into overdrive/crunch. There is more string noise accentuated by the unit, that;s what you get from an amplified acoustic, but your weird sounds may be the ac3 processing your post preamp and reverbed sound. If you recall, even putting humbuckers instead of single coils through the units resulted in a vastly different sound, I can only imagine what you get when you try to put your whole amp’s preamp sound into it (by using effects loop). Let me know how you go.

    I got the distinct impression that the tonal curves on the (top / body ratio) settings between the two pedals are quite different. In other words, one might have to set the AC-3 controls to 60/40 versus 40/60 for the Acousticar to obtain the same results. I full well understand that that wouldn't be a "truly fair" comparison in the technical sense, but it might better illustrate the capabilities of each pedal.
    To me, the Acousticar sounded somewhat bottom heavy, and an up tweak of the "top control" might remedy that to more faithfully imitate the AC-3

    Have you noticed the Noise that the Boss AC 3 is producing while engaged? I have a Boss Ac 3 and it is a little bit annoying to hear the noise. Does the Mooer Acoustikar have the same noise level? Thanks man! Great Review!

    • @FelixThiang
      @FelixThiang  5 років тому

      I haven't noticed any unusual levels of noise coming from the unit. There is naturally some noise coming from any system but both the Mooer and AC3 I would characterise as quiet. Not sure if something else may be happening with your signal chain. How are you hooking it up? What is your signal chain like, what amp, what length of cable etc?

    • @jammamiscal452
      @jammamiscal452 5 років тому +1

      I have an 8 pedal setup but I tried using it on its own to isolate other pedals noise. There is a slight hissing sound with the Boss Ac3 when its engaged. When its off then the hiss goes away. Also tried with either outputs (guitar & direct out). There is a lot of forums out there that discusses this problem. They say the mooer Acoustikar has lesser noise level.

      Finally got my Mooer Acoustikar. And it sounded waaaay more quiet than Boss Ac3. The sound quality I think I will give a SLIGHT advantage to Boss AC3 with its Jumbo settings but the standard settings on the Mooer is lovely. But still, it cannot replace a Real Acoustic guitar but the two pedals does a good job on simulating the sound and will give a "acoutic feel" with a band in a live situation. I would've still chose the Boss AC3 because of its additional features (reverb, line out) but the noise made me changed my mind.

    So can i use a semi hollowbody guitar with an acoustic simulator pedal and run it straight to a P/A, with no guitar amp and still get a good tone?

    • @KeyMondYTGaming
      @KeyMondYTGaming 4 роки тому

      That would sound better, as the purpose of a piezo sounded pickup is meant to go through directly to a pa or a cabinet. If you have an amp, put the output of the acoustic simulator to your fx return as it will bypass all the eq preamp on the amp itself.

      Hey, Felix. Thank you for answering. 😃
      But I was really talking about the amplifier sound.
      I had the Tomsline AC Stage, that is something similar to the Mooer Acoustikar, but I got really disappointed because of the LOUD pop on the amplifier. Simply unusable in live situations.
      So, Im looking for a new pedal and triyng not to make same mistake again.

My son wandered in, and he thought the whole thing was pretty cool. The Mooer sounded extremely muddy, and we couldn’t even hear some of the higher notes in the chords, when he was playing the Ibanez toward the end of the video. By comparison, the Boss sounded like an upright bass and an arch top acoustic, combined.
