Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

I’m a 73 year old grandma from Canada. I’ve never had animals just veg. Garden. My daughter is starting with egg chickens this year. I’m still gardening now and will continue. Just ran across your Chanel and am enjoying your content. May God bless you richly.

are you selling them suffolk herdwicks? would be interested in some gimmers.....if you had some suffolk herdwick drafts, that be better still
There the only ones we have. He bought them in lamb to texel. And Suffolk have come out . No doubt be selling them when old enough. 👍

nice calves you turned out ......they will be worth a nice bit of money by autumn or are you keeping them for suckler cows......are they limo's and belgian blues
These are calves out of dairy cows I bought as wee calves. We try buy a few to breed off. Up the cattle numbers. We can't afford cows and calves at the moment... So the 11 I had in the shed will all be to keep. They are blue crosses and limmys yes👍👍

You’re not very nice to your sheep are you? I’m not suggesting you’re cruel,far from it but you should watch the sheep game where he talks to his sheep and treats them kindly.
I treat mine kindly, I don't paint a petty picture I show it as it is. And it's real. We look after our stock 100 percent as you can see it reflects 😄 and sorry but I can't talk to the sheep it's not me
Do you have to travel daily to check on sheep that are away
Yes we try get everyday but because some are at my grandmas my mums over there often so can check. As for the other ground yes we check regularly and Peter checks twice a week from work we work around that area so it's handy 😃
