So glad pedal designs are still advancing and giving us the old with a tweakability into completely new territories and sonic layer complexities. Sounds killer on that spring tank deluxe reverb!
The "classic" Phase 90 was a compromise that saved on production costs, saved on explaining functioning to owners, and saved on real-estate. It was capable of SO much more, and when I build a clone for myself I always include the things it *could* do but which were left unused. So, in the original, the sweep depth/width was fixed, as was the feedback amount, and the offset or initial phase, and the dry-wet mix. All of those are very simple single-part-value changes. Keep in mind that early MXR pedals used big honking switches and pots, so fitting more into their standard box was tough. They did it for the Distortion+ and Dynacomp, but those were much simpler circuits. MXR also used a lot of parts that could be bent over and laid flat, so as to be able to fit the board in the box. Contemporary surface-mount manufacturing allows them to fit gobs more inside even mini-enclosures, with the limiting factor being human fingers and the knob sizes required for us to be able to get in there and twiddle.
I've made 8-stage phasers for myself, and have come to the conclusion that 6-stages is pretty much the sweet spot for guitars. Like a tree falling silently in the forest if there is no one to hear it, creating notches and peaks that spend much of their time outside the range of guitar pickups or guitar speakers is somewhat wasted effort. Eight stages and more IS useful for synths, acoustic guitar, and other sources with wider bandwidth than guitar, but for guitar six stages produces a rich sound, whose impact is always audible.
This is the new No.1 phaser pedal on the planet, hands down! Gorgeous playing and a stellar demo, John. Thank you, brother!
Rock On! I was checking out a little MXR Phase yesterday. Great Demo! Impeccable Timing! Needing to add one soon.
I’ve really appreciated John more through the years, with demos like this and really great conversations in rig run downs. Thanks!
Awesome demo! Thank you!
Love Waylon, thanks for the demo!
I couldn't decide on which phaser to get but your demo was awesome to show off what you can get outta this thing... killer slide guitar too. Thanks, bought one last night for a steal used.
Thanks man I’m getting one .. great review once again!
"Cmon man,picture yourself on a boat on a river" 😆 🤣
Awesome slide playing
I play in a modern country/southern rock band. This sounds thicccccccc. Great playing as always, thanks PG and JB for the great content!
"Classic On-Off like before" Take my money, I'm in.
sweet, great demo...gotta get one naturally \m/
Hey John, Beautiful guitar brother!! 🙌🏻🎸🎶
Thinking about building a mini pedalboard for rehearsals and jams and this pedal will be a great addition.
John You Are One Absolute Great Person and Guitarist 🎸✨✨✨✨✨☮️
Yep need one in my life!
sweet !
Excellent.
Sweet Kiesel man!
Cool
I saw you playing Second Fiddle the other night!
John's slide playing is so strong
Well .done ! This deep phase .are the classic voices, in 1975 years......
Shadoobie
That’s a real nice lookin’ Kiesel….love those roasted maple necks!
Love that guitar
@@johnbohlinger4868 Nice slide playin’ John! Giving Derek Trucks a run for his money!!
Any idea how much that Kiesel is going for?
@@terrypussypower thanks for the kind words. I've had the Kiesel for years, so I'm not sure what they cost now, but Kiesel can build pretty much anything to order. They do killer custom work at an affordable price.
I love you John!!!
I love you ink.
I love you ink.
@@johnbohlinger4868 It's love that holds it all together ❤😍
Nice guitar, do a vid on that.
To my ears it sounds similar to a phase 100, very cool
I've always found the 100 to be kind of "crisp." I was so in love with Mick Jones Clash madness that I had to get one. Also share with a 95, mostly I stay on the Script 45 setting. Ephing luv phasers!
Is that a chip in the paintwork already? :D
So this is based on the Phase 90? For some reason I thought they were taking on the Small Stone...
Nice guitar John! Birthday present??
Once listen 's .yes ....this is the one ....
This is a phase 100 in a small box, with more versatile controls.
It's just had to beat mutrons biphase, for me at least. I do really enjoy the MXR. It's a classic for a reason.
Try using this pedal with their DC Brick and let me know how it goes.
Sounds great, shame it's only in the mini box.
Sounds great. Good they made it compact. Who uses batteries these days? It's true bypass too.
relic?
You had so much reverb on there
Waymore
Hey Now
I bought a script Phase 90 back in the 70’s, and ended up flogging it to a mate for a tenner in the mid 80’s after the black control knob cracked and fell off!
It was still fully functional too.
Boo hoo 😢
Trying to tap into your inner hillage? Haha, I see your comments all over the place.
..but can it 'Atomic Punk' man..?
Set both knobs to 9 o'clock, in the M.1 setting and it will do just that.
I own MXR pedals because they are high quality but Not expensive . Sound Expensive . 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🎸☮️
I was just thinking I've never owned an mxr pedal. I've had dunlop, way huge but never mxr
Was that a fart @ 00:30 ?
Just late enough not to get demonetized
I wasn't even going to take a look but couldn't resist. You'll notice that Mr. Bohlinger gives an all-knowing smile at 00.31. Now to be a bit off topic I bet this will sound great with the Bass and different than the Phase 90 series.
Interesting stuff, but I could live without that spring reverb all over everything. 🙂
I am having issues using this pedal with Dunlop's DC Brick. It simply will not boot when I connect the Brick to the wall and I have tp disconnect and reconnect the pedal to the brick to get it to become hot. Very disappointed with Jim Dunlop, so far I'm not getting any support for this issue, as if it's a known issue they don't want to address. That said, it works normally with a simply 9v power supply. Makes no sense to me and it's annoying as hell.
That guitar is so ugly, you should drop it by the house and I’ll keep it out of the public eye for you.
