Correction to the vid! I was not on Notchtop. I was on Ptarmigan Point. Notchtop is a class 4 summit at the end of the ridge that sticks out from Ptarmigan Point. Its close, but we were not on it.
Back in the day, we did what i recall being named the Southeast Arete of Notchtop, but we were watching choppers rescue someone off Longs, and the lst chopped crashed, then another came in, then the wind came, then we ran out of water, then the 5.9 roof kicked my butt, then a tiny piece got stuck so I had to hang to get it out, then we did the descent rappel and walk off in record time and started processing drinking water the minute we found it. Then the marmot had chewed the heel off my hiking boot at the base after he extricated it from my pack which he also chewed through. But he left enough plastic heel cup for me to hike back to the car. Not a particularly epic day, but a memorable one nonetheless! Now I live vicariously through your videos! Thank you for posting them.
yawninggreyhound Wow! That sounds like an epic day to me! You saw a helicopter crash! Jeeeez! I'm not sure of all the climbing lingo but it sounds hard. I dont do the climbing too much.. I tried going up the waterfall to Spectacle Lakes, accidentally let go, slid back down the rock and nearly blew my knee for the 3rd time. So after that I am pretty cautious now.
we actually didn't see it crash, it just disappeared...then another came. all we could see was the hovering in front of the diamond while I was belaying. we got the whole story down in estes park later. I just sold my entire significant climbing rack on ebay in anticipation of scaling down. It was fun meeting the buyers, who got a screaming deal, great gear taken care of by a climber whose first rule was Don't Fall. (courtesy of John Long's advice)(:)). I would fall on bolted top ropes, of course; but on traditional routes, no, never. I watched your whole hike to the four peaks, what a beautiful tour. Thank you. My 42-year-older-than-me mom would always ask Isn't there a better way up those things without climbing them? Like Pikes Peak? Moms. Gotta love them.
I really enjoy your high quality videos. They help me decide which hikes to do. I am looking for your opinion on two hikes. We will be in RMNP for 11 days. We have two big summit hikes on our list. Our knees may dictate only doing one of them. So I wanted to ask you about Mt. Ida vs Flattop. 1) which would have better views at the summit AND along the way, (both seem beautiful) 2) would you say one is more difficult than the other, 3) would one of them be less crowded. I was thinking because Flattop begins at Bear lake we might have more crowds there. We are early risers and I think we are also going to hike from Milner’s Pass to the Alpine Visitor Center at some point during our stay. So I also wondered if the views on the trail are very similar to Mt Ida’s. I’m having a hard time deciding which one, if we have to choose. Thanks.
Hallett is for sure going to be much busier because you have a bigger parking lot. The limited parking at Milner Pass keep Ida from being crazy busy. Id have to say the views going up are better on Ida because its almost all exposed tundra.. but the summit view may be a tad better on Hallett. Its a toss up.. here is a 3rd option. Ypsilon Mountain. Its one of the best.
Nick. Was this the true Notchtop Summit? It looks like you're further away from the cliff area. I assumed the Notchtpp summit was right on the edge. From what I read it says class IV. You don't detail the climb up to Notchtop in the video so it's hard to tell. Thanks.
@@nicksangetta8874 ok, thanks Nick. I was hoping I could get it but class 4 is usually above my pay grade. I'm going to try a few of the other summits up there tomorrow. Weather looks decent.
@@Miderguy_ I trashed my knee on the last hike, been trying to heal it for last 6 days and will be up there as well tomorrow doing something easy. I dont think I can do but a few miles. Weather is looking good!!
Love all your videos. I saw one a while back where you were on the Glacier Gorge Trail and used the Fire Trail. I would like to find that again so I can familiarize myself with where the Fire Trail is so I can use it during my upcoming trip in early October. Help? 😂
Just to be more clear, its not past the first little bridge with the rocks next to it where you can choose to skip across the water.. the trail is past the next bridge after that. The big one with hand rails on both sides.
At 3:49 this trail is so ancient that parts of it have been destroyed or damaged by natural disasters or may be those who built this trail skipped this rocky part to smooth it, but still those heavy rocks lined along both sides of the road in other parts of the trail shows it is ancient... who were those people who made it and when ? ...btw this part of the trail is extension of 3:09
Definitely worth the subscription. Question.. Coming from the east coast would I need to adjust to altitude before taking on this hike? I've hiked franconia ( New Hampshire) several times & the highest Mount Washington at 6,000 plus. Nothing like what you've done. Thanks. Great job!!!
Thank you! I think you should be okay on these. The altitude may get you a little but it shouldnt be anything severe. Just take it slow and steady.. rest on the way up and enjoy the views!
I've booked my campsite. The date is set! Headed to RMNP the last week of July. I'm trying to train now for an attempt to summit Flattop and Hallett. With my fibromyalgia, it may be difficult. Any pointers? I thought of bringing along some of those personal oxygen cans. By the way, what camera are you filming with?
Congrats on getting the campsite! Ive heard that can be difficult to secure. My only pointer is to start to early. Give yourself a little extra time to rest if you need it. But starting early puts you in the best position to succeed. Yes, those oxygen cans work!! I thought they were a tourist scam but they really work. I carry a can in my pack. I use a Nikon B700 camera.. which sadly has been discontinued.
Having just done this on July 1st. I can agree with Nick; the earlier you start the better. Things I would take with depending on what the weather looks like is at least a wind breaker/jacket. It was mid 70's during the day but at noon at the summit it was maybe 40 (it was hard to tell as the wind was a constant 30-40mph). Just take your time and enjoy the scenery. There were plenty of people when I went as well and I joined a group that was heading where I was since neither of us had been there before and between the 3 of us having done some homework the navigation was a breeze. Just realize if it calls for storms in the afternoon it takes quite a while to get back to the treeline from the summit.

The Fire Trail is on the other side of the first major bridge just past the trail junction that splits off to glacier gorge TH and Bear Lake TH.
