Excellent review, I have used nextBase dash cams for a couple of years now, one in my car, one in my wife's car, and one in my son's car, they all worked perfectly well for the first year, then we noticed a flickering on and off when we stopped and switched off, it turned out to be the battery had given up, preventing the final clip from finalising and making it un playable, if this problem has been addressed then this is an excellent dash cam

Nice video Dan, funny was only speaking to the wife today after a series of unfortunate events for us we are considering a dashcam for both cars but found selecting one to be a nightmare as all reviews seem to be bias in some way. I like you reviews and I know that you have said in the past that a recommendation will only make it to the channel if you found it to be a quality product, so this goes firmly on a list. Another good video Dan. As well as monitoring what's ahead with a dash cam, have you considered a rear view cam (as opposed to a reversing cam, though I've seen some with dual lenses that cover both functions). As an imminent new caravan owner whose van has a windowless rear panel I've been considering the usefulness of rear view cams. It would be good to know what is behind the van, particularly in that blind spot not covered by the additional rear view mirrors fitted to the car. Small cars and bikes can be a problem behind the van, I read, and moving back into the inner lane on motorways can also be problematic. Perhaps a subject for a future video?

Nice video I've actually got the same dashcam as my previous Nextbase model developed a fault so they exchanged it for the 412gw for free. Result. Overall I am really happy with it. It's great peace of mind should I be near or involved in something. In fact after someone opened their car door into my nearside wheel arch as I passed the unit paid for itself. The other party refused to ackknowegde what he did until I pointed out the camera and said no problem, I'll claim of your insurance. He paid for the damage 24 hours later. I've found recording in 1080p 60fps is superb. The 1440p is too much for my laptop to handle and playback is laggy. I've also swapped the windscreen sucker attachment for the 3M sticker one - I found the sucker used to fail every so often especially if the windscreen got very warm. My only gripe is I can't work out parking mode. If I turn this on, when I drive the unit seems to stop the loop recording. I've not had time to see if that's because it's plugged in the cigarette lighter and not hard wired. Apologies for the rant but if I get an answer to any of my issues great, plus others looking to buy could find it useful. Rant over 😂😂almost
I use a dash cam for the same reason. Can't quite get my head around how some motorists haven't realised sitting behind a caravan is no worse than sitting behind a HGV. At least you don't see caravans blocking two lanes of a motorway, trying to overtake when their vehicle is governed! Nor do we spray gallons of water on those behind when the roads are wet. (Rain has stopped but a HGV can keep the monsoon coming for miles afterwards!)

If you don't like HGV's then stop 'buying stuff' then there will be no HGV's on the road.....of course, your car will probably run out of fuel before that happens and since you won't be able to get to work in your car you'll run out of money. It's funny how people like to criticize HGV's forgetting that everything that supports their lifestyle arrives by HGV.

James Graeme I'm not criticising HGVs par se I'm making a comparison that no one seems to complain about HGVs as they do caravans. Yet caravans are no worse. I'm sure people don't accept HGVs on the basis they will be eternally grateful to them for bringing them "stuff" they buy! You may not be aware but before the juggernaut that moved "stuff" by train and local drivers in smaller vehicles moved it from the station. We could therefore argue if you use not being able to get to work and have no money, as reason for HGVs, that HGVs had an impact on local drivers, probably putting them out of work. So your reasoning loses ground! Put things into perspective, it's not a complaint on HGV it's a comparison caravans are no worse, end of!

Hi Dan. Great review. Got one question. As these dashcam are the new Sat Nav that everyone one wants. Leaving the dashcam inside the car after you hv parked up. Leaving it open to thevies. If they take it you won't hv any proof or footage.
I bought one of these yesterday as Halfords have a sale on and it is now £103 so good time to buy, I ordered my SD card from amazon as its just £11 for the 32 GB where Halfords want £20 for a 16GB card. I'm looking forward to using this and hope it will come in useful in protecting myself and others from the thoughtless on our roads, only last year I witnessed people throwing beer bottles out of their car window in front of me, that would have made a great video for the police see.

Good Video but does the camera's picture move the correct way up (and record) if you install it upside down? ..the reason i ask is because i have a tomtom sucker mount on the dashboard for the Sat nav which i want to use instead of sucker mount on the windscreen

Great video review Dan, just a bit of constructive feedback for you. I would have recommended you record the dashcam footage at 1440p, when you are trying to review the quality on offer this is key to the clarity of the footage. You could have then scaled up the presentation footage in post production to match. also UA-cam allows 1440p footage more bandwidth. Again great video, I'll be using your link to buy this. :)

All footage across all cameras is stuck to the same resolution / frame rate. this is key to the clarity of the footage i shoot across all videos etc. Upscaling or downsampling in post production would not give a representation of the dash cam, or give a muddy & blurred look to the rest of the footage away from the dash cam. I am glad you found it interesting, and in light of this and other comments regarding different times of the day and various weather conditions - i will record a new "footage from..." in 2.5K Thanks once again, i really like honest feedback and I hope i can act upon it in the correct way. Never seen much point in them Dan until I towed too, constantly dangerously cut up coming off dual carriageways too great video and going to have a look as I think the footage quality was superb. Being a bit techno dim, I'm assuming you only keep any footage that actually shows an "incident"? How do you delete the rest, wasn't sure . Thanks Claire

Hi, i use 1080p 60Fps for all my videos, hence why the dashcam was in this setting. The 1440 at 30fps will give more clarity and at a lower shutter speed allow more light too. so, for just dash cam use - i would recommend the higher setting. Hope that helps. Dan
I really enjoyed watching your review on the Nextbase dashcam, it's a neat little item with what looks like a multitude of functions, I know you said it's expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for, just one question, did you find that having the dashcam draws attention to your car?, some people take exception to them if you know what I mean, I think it would be better if everything on the front of the cam was black, then it might not be quite so noticeable, I phoned my insurance company about them to see if I could get a reduction on my policy if I got one, unfortunately, they see it as a modification and it would have put my premium up, so I didn't ask them to quote me on it, once again, thanks for doing this excellent video review
I felt this was a bit big with the suction cup and the 312 lacked the night quality so ended up with a DDPAI M6+. Also other reviews said the wifi download was painfully slow. I still think it's great value and customer service is good
Morning Craig, I found the Wifi slow, but useable. It was certainly no slower than getting footage off a Go Pro via Wifi. I think it really depends on what resolution the footage is along with how long each clip is (can be changed in settings etc) Thanks for popping by. Dan
Hi Dan, just wondering if this camera clearly shows that it is actually recording when in use? I have the earlier 412G which has a very small light to show it's recording (light changes from blue to red) and on a bright day you might miss if it's not on. Now nine times out of ten that's not an issue as it starts automatically when you switch on the ignition. I haven't quite worked out why I have to switch it on manually the other one time out of ten but it could be more than a bit frustrating if I forget. I really like mine by the way and bought it after much research. Adrian.
Morning Adrian, Great question, yes it has the same light arrangement as yours. A small red / blue light in the corner, that changes when recording - i noticed it looks purple when I'm recording, although the dash cam is hidden by the rear view mirror, I can see the LED in the corner so I'm aware it is working and recording. Thanks Dan, I hope it's a bit clearer than the older version as I sometimes have to shield mine from the light to check it's on. I guess it should become one of those routine checks before pulling away and then there would be no doubt. I like the visible reassurance though.

Hi, i believe (i don't usually see the screen) that if the speed is switched off, its off on the screen too. Sorry i cannot be more help - the screen is hidden behind the mirror and the screen goes blank when we are on the move. Take care Dan
HI, I'm not sure on the exact length, but there was plenty for me to have the cable routed around the windscreen, down the door pilar and across to the centre of the car, so you don't see any cable dangling around anywhere. Hope that helps. Dan

Hi, yes its pretty good at capturing footage around you allowing for a freeze frame. I've managed to pick out a number plate of a car approaching at 60MPH, while i was doing 60MPH - so a closing speed would be 120MPH - and the number plate was very readable. Hope that helps.

Hi Simon, Lets see if I can help you here. 1. I used a plastic knife to "tuck" the USB cable in-between the screen & surround.I then followed the door pilar down and into the glove box where I have a power outlet, however the cable is long enough to carry on the the cigarette outlet in the centre. 2. I mounted the dash cam on the screen but behind the rear view mirror, SO during driving i don't actually see it. its quite well hidden and very discrete. 3. Because its behind the mirror, and because you can "switch off" the display no glare occurs. I hope that helps Simon, Take care Dan

It would be nice too ideally so to make use of the parking facility. I gather it's got a very short battery life built in? Is yours still working OK?
Hi Simon, check if your Cigar lighter is switched, so it goes off when the ignition is off. If so, this won't cause the dash cam to flatten your battery. We still use ours, its plugged in and almost forgotten about in the car. The parking facility wakes the dash cam up to record if the car is nudged etc, so it won't draw a lot of power, only when its needed etc. Hope that helps Dan
hi again dan great vid, i have 2 cheap dash cams that are the same, 1 for each car wen i was new to dash cams and as u say when i needed it i found it wasnt saving files thankfully not a major incident for me to find out lol, wen i can afford to im gonna get a new cam and also im gonna invest in a wireless reversing cam for caravan as seeing behind can be arkward like reversing etc
I've just bought one of these and I agree a great bit of kit but I'm struggling to download the footage to my Samsung. Any advice please. Sd card in. App on phone. Can see footage but shows no videos recorded although camera does record.
HI Andrew, just to make sure - take the SD card out of the Dash Cam and plug it into a PC etc - just to make sure their is footage on it. If not, i'd return it or complete a factory reset on it to make sure its working correctly. Hope that helps Dan
Just bought one of these, after the latest firmware update you can't turn off the bright yellow "Nextbase" company logo which is on every video you record. If i'd have known I wouldn't have bought it.

The only thing I don't like about this is it uses an SD card, it would be a lot easier if the camera had a USB slot like all digital cameras have. I am guessing you have to buy the SD card separately to use this device?
Great review, I have this dashcam myself and like it a lot. Already helped clear me of any wrong doing with the boss at work. I'm a HGV driver and in said incident, some caravan towing "person" tried cutting in front of me where a dual carriageway merged from 2 lanes into 1. They ignored all of the warning signs that the lane they were in merged in to the lane I was in, made no effort to get past me in time, bear in mind I'm electronically limited to how fast I can go. They had to slam all on at the last moment and pull in behind me. They then complained about my driving. The vast majority of caravaners, like HGV drivers, are sensible and considerate out on the road. It's the idiotic few that you encounter (like the aforementioned) that ruin it for everyone else. Dan I could not agree more with your comments on bad motorists. I have had two of these for the last 2 yrs one at the front and one at the back. I travel a lot round UK & Scotland and my main concern apart from bad motorists was cyclists. Whilst the majority are mature sensible riders I do come across the odd shall we say brain dead. I had both cameras hard wired, that way the just come on and off with the ignition so I do not even have to think about them. Film quality is brilliant and although there is a piece of software to review them, the file works just as well with windows media player. I have reported tail gaiters to police especially HGV's who were on the phone at the time. They responded well (cops like a smoking gun) Nice piece of kit and thanks for the excellent video.
Stacieod Stacieod what does it matter? If he's paid or receives a dash cam its in return for producing the video, which takes time. We're all paid in return for time, or do you work for nothing?
I don't think anyone is complaining about this but it does slant the video somewhat. I think Dan's review is fair and honest. However, I have seen ***Sponsored Videos*** from youtube celebrities that are far from that. They've been paid to say something nice about a product even if they don't like it or even don't use it. I'm NOT suggesting that this is what Dan has done though, just pointing out that it does happen... BTW - If you're reading this Dan, GREAT REVIEW MATE :)
i bought one off the back of this video. What a mistake as when I used it not all the files from the journey saved correctly (corrupted files) to the SD card making it unreliable! So i returned it.
Thats rubbish, glad you returned it. This is exactly what my older Dash Cam was doing. I only discovered the issue when i actually needed the files. Not that this would fix the issue, but did you download the latest firmware and also i have heard that some Dash Cams are really sensitive on the SD cards they have. Take care Dan
@@TheTrudgians As long as you are about to show how bad the cam ist, thats the right way to do. In any other situation smart people upload in the nativ resolution of the cam to show the quality...not some downscaled mush
why these companies make cameras and then spray them silver i will never know a camera should always and only ever be BLACK so it does not stand out in the car a camera should be as stealth as possible think i will stick with the Mio brand
Bloody infuriating! All I want is how to actually RECORD something. It isn’t just a case of plugging it it in and going - it doesn’t record automatically and isn’t CLEAR how you save recordings. Why the hell cant people tell me how the basic operation works?! Not even the company does this.......
Hmm, i think it's incredibly simple and clear.. you plug it in, it switches on and it records, and it keeps recording.... when you need to save a recording from an incident , you press the button on the rear, and it wont overwrite that segment, allowing you to download it later. Might be worthwhile, doing a factory reset on the device - and trying again. Hope that helps.
Moans that people cut in when towing a caravan... Don't tow a caravan and pay for a hotel room like everyone else. Nobody wants to drive begin a large white box that is obstructing everything ahead and is slower than a turtle ...
And you would be the reason why I and everyone else needs a dash cam. I won’t use a hotel, I will continue to enjoy touring around, driving at the legal limit and anticipating muppets who feel they need to be in front.

Good Video but does the camera's picture move the correct way up (and record) if you install it upside down? ..the reason i ask is because i have a tomtom sucker mount on the dashboard for the Sat nav which i want to use instead of sucker mount on the windscreen

Great video review Dan, just a bit of constructive feedback for you. I would have recommended you record the dashcam footage at 1440p, when you are trying to review the quality on offer this is key to the clarity of the footage.
You could have then scaled up the presentation footage in post production to match. also UA-cam allows 1440p footage more bandwidth.

All footage across all cameras is stuck to the same resolution / frame rate. this is key to the clarity of the footage i shoot across all videos etc.
Upscaling or downsampling in post production would not give a representation of the dash cam, or give a muddy & blurred look to the rest of the footage away from the dash cam.
I am glad you found it interesting, and in light of this and other comments regarding different times of the day and various weather conditions - i will record a new "footage from..." in 2.5K

Never seen much point in them Dan until I towed too, constantly dangerously cut up coming off dual carriageways too great video and going to have a look as I think the footage quality was superb. Being a bit techno dim, I'm assuming you only keep any footage that actually shows an "incident"? How do you delete the rest, wasn't sure . Thanks Claire

Hi, do you recommend using 1080p 60 fps or 1440 at 30fps? Which is more clear and performs better at reading number plates at night?
Hi, i use 1080p 60Fps for all my videos, hence why the dashcam was in this setting. The 1440 at 30fps will give more clarity and at a lower shutter speed allow more light too. so, for just dash cam use - i would recommend the higher setting.

I really enjoyed watching your review on the Nextbase dashcam, it's a neat little item with what looks like a multitude of functions, I know you said it's expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for, just one question, did you find that having the dashcam draws attention to your car?, some people take exception to them if you know what I mean, I think it would be better if everything on the front of the cam was black, then it might not be quite so noticeable, I phoned my insurance company about them to see if I could get a reduction on my policy if I got one, unfortunately, they see it as a modification and it would have put my premium up, so I didn't ask them to quote me on it, once again, thanks for doing this excellent video review
Nice camera only fault I have with it is the colour it tends to standout I would prefer a solid black camera so its not as noticeable.
I felt this was a bit big with the suction cup and the 312 lacked the night quality so ended up with a DDPAI M6+.
Also other reviews said the wifi download was painfully slow. I still think it's great value and customer service is good
Morning Craig, I found the Wifi slow, but useable. It was certainly no slower than getting footage off a Go Pro via Wifi. I think it really depends on what resolution the footage is along with how long each clip is (can be changed in settings etc)

Hi Dan, just wondering if this camera clearly shows that it is actually recording when in use? I have the earlier 412G which has a very small light to show it's recording (light changes from blue to red) and on a bright day you might miss if it's not on. Now nine times out of ten that's not an issue as it starts automatically when you switch on the ignition. I haven't quite worked out why I have to switch it on manually the other one time out of ten but it could be more than a bit frustrating if I forget. I really like mine by the way and bought it after much research.

Great question, yes it has the same light arrangement as yours. A small red / blue light in the corner, that changes when recording - i noticed it looks purple when I'm recording, although the dash cam is hidden by the rear view mirror, I can see the LED in the corner so I'm aware it is working and recording.

Thanks Dan, I hope it's a bit clearer than the older version as I sometimes have to shield mine from the light to check it's on. I guess it should become one of those routine checks before pulling away and then there would be no doubt. I like the visible reassurance though.
If it is a help, this one makes a "start up" and "shut down" sound, so i know when it wakes up etc.

Hi, i believe (i don't usually see the screen) that if the speed is switched off, its off on the screen too.
Sorry i cannot be more help - the screen is hidden behind the mirror and the screen goes blank when we are on the move.

HI, I'm not sure on the exact length, but there was plenty for me to have the cable routed around the windscreen, down the door pilar and across to the centre of the car, so you don't see any cable dangling around anywhere.

HI, I just bought one of these cameras, great job. Only problem I have is i can't get the speed display up on the screen, it's giving me the option of MPH / KPH but it's not showing on the screen. Any help would be appreciated.

yes its pretty good at capturing footage around you allowing for a freeze frame. I've managed to pick out a number plate of a car approaching at 60MPH, while i was doing 60MPH - so a closing speed would be 120MPH - and the number plate was very readable.

1. I used a plastic knife to "tuck" the USB cable in-between the screen & surround.I then followed the door pilar down and into the glove box where I have a power outlet, however the cable is long enough to carry on the the cigarette outlet in the centre.
2. I mounted the dash cam on the screen but behind the rear view mirror, SO during driving i don't actually see it. its quite well hidden and very discrete.
3. Because its behind the mirror, and because you can "switch off" the display no glare occurs.

The Trudgians Thank you Dan. A great help. If I do buy one, I'm not sure if I'd be able to leave it plugged in all the time as I think it would drain my car battery when the engine is off. It would be nice too ideally so to make use of the parking facility. I gather it's got a very short battery life built in? Is yours still working OK?
Hi Simon, check if your Cigar lighter is switched, so it goes off when the ignition is off. If so, this won't cause the dash cam to flatten your battery. We still use ours, its plugged in and almost forgotten about in the car.
The parking facility wakes the dash cam up to record if the car is nudged etc, so it won't draw a lot of power, only when its needed etc.

hi again dan great vid, i have 2 cheap dash cams that are the same, 1 for each car wen i was new to dash cams and as u say when i needed it i found it wasnt saving files thankfully not a major incident for me to find out lol, wen i can afford to im gonna get a new cam and also im gonna invest in a wireless reversing cam for caravan as seeing behind can be arkward like reversing etc
I've just bought one of these and I agree a great bit of kit but I'm struggling to download the footage to my Samsung. Any advice please. Sd card in. App on phone. Can see footage but shows no videos recorded although camera does record.
HI Andrew, just to make sure - take the SD card out of the Dash Cam and plug it into a PC etc - just to make sure their is footage on it.
If not, i'd return it or complete a factory reset on it to make sure its working correctly.

Just bought one of these, after the latest firmware update you can't turn off the bright yellow "Nextbase" company logo which is on every video you record. If i'd have known I wouldn't have bought it.

The only thing I don't like about this is it uses an SD card, it would be a lot easier if the camera had a USB slot like all digital cameras have. I am guessing you have to buy the SD card separately to use this device?
Joss Cues you do have to buy an SD card (up to 128gb) , but you can still plug it in via usb to your pc instead of removing the SD card
Great review, I have this dashcam myself and like it a lot. Already helped clear me of any wrong doing with the boss at work. I'm a HGV driver and in said incident, some caravan towing "person" tried cutting in front of me where a dual carriageway merged from 2 lanes into 1. They ignored all of the warning signs that the lane they were in merged in to the lane I was in, made no effort to get past me in time, bear in mind I'm electronically limited to how fast I can go. They had to slam all on at the last moment and pull in behind me. They then complained about my driving.
The vast majority of caravaners, like HGV drivers, are sensible and considerate out on the road. It's the idiotic few that you encounter (like the aforementioned) that ruin it for everyone else.

Dan I could not agree more with your comments on bad motorists. I have had two of these for the last 2 yrs one at the front and one at the back. I travel a lot round UK & Scotland and my main concern apart from bad motorists was cyclists. Whilst the majority are mature sensible riders I do come across the odd shall we say brain dead. I had both cameras hard wired, that way the just come on and off with the ignition so I do not even have to think about them. Film quality is brilliant and although there is a piece of software to review them, the file works just as well with windows media player. I have reported tail gaiters to police especially HGV's who were on the phone at the time. They responded well (cops like a smoking gun) Nice piece of kit and thanks for the excellent video.

yes I had the same problem but I then bought the optional Nextbase NBDVRPF lens filter, Perfect day or night with zero reflection.
Beware some models have the filter built in.

For this I have cheaper Swiftcover car insurance 12.5%
i bought one off the back of this video. What a mistake as when I used it not all the files from the journey saved correctly (corrupted files) to the SD card making it unreliable! So i returned it.

This is exactly what my older Dash Cam was doing. I only discovered the issue when i actually needed the files. Not that this would fix the issue, but did you download the latest firmware and also i have heard that some Dash Cams are really sensitive on the SD cards they have.

why these companies make cameras and then spray them silver i will never know a camera should always and only ever be BLACK so it does not stand out in the car a camera should be as stealth as possible think i will stick with the Mio brand
Bloody infuriating! All I want is how to actually RECORD something. It isn’t just a case of plugging it it in and going - it doesn’t record automatically and isn’t CLEAR how you save recordings. Why the hell cant people tell me how the basic operation works?! Not even the company does this.......
Hmm, i think it's incredibly simple and clear.. you plug it in, it switches on and it records, and it keeps recording.... when you need to save a recording from an incident , you press the button on the rear, and it wont overwrite that segment, allowing you to download it later.
Might be worthwhile, doing a factory reset on the device - and trying again.
