NOTES: SB07 Story of Bhishma In Bhagavatam, only Bhishma stuti to Krishna is described, but here stories from Devi Bhagavata and Mahabharata are included too. 1. Once in Brahma’s court, many people were discussing about peace and devotion to all lokas. In that court, Eldest daughter of Himavanta, Ganga entered the court, with breeze (because of Paradevata’s decision to lead to something very important and great), Ganga’s saree covering her upper portion of body blew away exposing her breasts. A Rajarshi named Gobisha, forgetting that he was in Brahma’s court got kama-prerana in him, observing this; Brahma cursed him to take birth as a human being and also Ganga to be his wife for sometime and return to Brahma-loka. That rajarshi decided to take birth as son of childless Prateeka. Ganga also decided to go to earth when he’s ready for marriage because she was responsible for his curse. Meanwhile, Ashtavasus (8 Vasus) came to the refuge of Ganga and recited their story. One day, when 8 Vasus were on their heavenly path, saw the most glorious and bright as lightning, Nandini in Vashishta’s ashram. One of them named Dhyu (or Dhyo) thought to steal Nandini to cure the disease and bring everyouth to Useenara. Next day, Vasishta found Nandini missing, understood through divya drishti, and cursed them to take birth in earth. Then 8 Vasus ran and pleaded Vasishta to make his curse less intense. He considered and said, Dhyu primarily is the culprit, so rest of you 7 will take birth and die within minutes, whereas Dhyu should lead a very long life on earth facing a lot of challenges and testing times, as a great warrior and full of virtues. Then 8 Vasus went to Ganga and asked Her to kill them as soon as they are born, she agrees. Meanwhile, Emperor Prateepa was praying for children in Ganga river. Ganga saw him and understands that he’s Gobisha Rajarshi, reborn. Then she came and sat on his right thigh and asks to make her his wife. Prateepa opened his eyes and said, you wanted to make me your husband, but you sat on my right thigh, where only a daughter or daughter-in-law can sit on right thigh (wife should always sit on left thigh). You cannot be my daughter because you imagind me as your husband, but “Aatmaavai Putranaamaasi” (son is the father himself), so become wife of my son, this is my boon. Then Gobisha took birth to Prateepa as Shantana. Prateepa asks Shantanu to marry the lady who appears in Ganga like a lightning and clean smile (Suchi-smita). One day Shantanu saw Ganga and asks her to marry him as per his father’s boon. Then Ganga says, I will marry you on one condition. She said, you should never question my good or bad deeds I do after marriage, if you question any of my deed, I would leave you forever. Ganga gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, even before the blood is washed on baby’s body, She threw him in Ganga river to death. Shantanu didn’t question as per their condition, but was deeply depressed. This repeated for 7 sons, infuriated Shantanu questions Ganga of Her cruel deeds to save 8th son. She smiles and explained that She wasn’t cruel, but liberating 7 Vasus as per their curse, but the 8th son should live and become a great warrior and expert in archery, to install Dharma in this earth. She said, I’m leaving you as per our condition, and our 8th son will be named Devavrata, and shall have education and training of archery and war secrets from Parashurama and Vasishta. 2. One day during hunting, Shantanu saw Satyavathi, whom he saw on the banks of Ganga helping pilgrims to cross river on her boat. She is Yojanagandhi (smells like musk for as far as 1 yojana as per the boon of Parashara when she gave birth to his son, Veda Vyasa by Sadyad-garbha) and desires to marry her. She said Shantanu to take permission from Dasharaja, a fisherman. Dasharaja asks whether Satyavati’s son will become emperor instead of Devavrata. Shantanu felt so sad to do injustice to his son, who is a great warrior and can become the most able and noble administrator of Dharma as emperor, and left the place disappointed. Devavrata observes that his father was not happy for few days, and observed his lack of presence of mind. Upon inquiring, ministers reveal that his father wanted to marry Satyavati. Devavrata meets Dasharaja and learns about the condition he had. Then Devavrata promises to make Satyavati’s son as emperor to satisfy my father’s desire. Dasharaja says, if you marry and give birth to a son later, he would naturally be a great warrior, who can be a threat to Satyavati’s son. Then Devavrata immediately takes a bhishma-pratigna, a strong vow to keep celibacy and stay unmarried for all life, so that he would never give birth to a son, and so only Satyavati’s son can be the emperor. At that finest moment, Devavrata was named Bhishma for his strong vow, all Gods and Rishis bestowed flower rain (pushpa-vrishti) to bless his great sacrifise. Dasharaja agrees and performs marriage of Satyavati with Shantanu. Shantanu gets extremely pleased with Bhishma’s sacrifise and gives him 2 boons: Swachanda-marana (Icchya-mrityu) that he would die only when he decides to die and second boon that no body can win him in a battle as long as he holds a bow in his hand. 3. After few years, Satyavati gave birth to two stupid sons: Chitrangada and Vichitraveerya. Chitrangada dies in a war he asked with a gandharva named Chitrangada for having same name, and dies in that war. Now Bhishma took the responsibility of bringing a wife to Vichitraveerya to continue their dynasty. To bring wives, Bhishma challenges all kings in Swayamvara, and abducts 3 daughters, Amba, Ambika and Ambalika, the daughters of king of Kasi to make Vichitraveerya’s wives. He took them to Hastinapur and arranged marriage. Amba went to Bhishma and said that she and king Salva are in love for long time, I have in my mind him as my husband though we are not married. So to keep a woman who has another man in her mind is like keeping a poisonous snake in house. So as a person of great dharma, please send me to Salva. Bhishma agrees to it, apologises for not knowing this beforehand and sends Amba to Salva, but Salva denies accepting Amba as she was under the custody of another man for a while. Amba develops immense anger towards Bhishma for spoiling her life and love, and goes to Tapovan for performing penance. But other sanyasis oppose her as a young woman to stay only with her father or marry a man and be his wife, and not to stay among sanyasis and disturb them. Meanwhile, Amba’s grand father (mother’s father = Matamaha) arrives there and learns her problem. He takes Amba to Parashurama (guru of Bhishma), who takes her to Bhishma and orders Bhishma to marry Amba and give her justice. Bhishma replied, even the Pancha-tanmatras (or Panch vishays: five subtle elements: Shabda, Sparsh, Rupa, Rasa, and Gandha) may stop exhibiting their natural characters, but I would not break my vow of celibacy (Pratigna-palana). Then Parashurama asked Bhishma to face a war in Kurukshetra, and had a fierce war of 22 days. On 22nd night, 7 Vasus appeared to Bhishma and presented an astra created by Vishwakarma, which would put anyone at anytime to sleep. Sleeping in battle-field is considered equivalent to death. Before Bhishma could use this astra, Narada and other munis appear in front of Bhishma and advised not to earn the sin of putting his Guru to sleep in battle (equivalent to death), so Bhishma refused to use this astra. Jamadagni (Parashurama’s father) appeared and advised Parashurama not to fight Bhishma who is fighting for Dharma. In order to end the battle, he voluntarily falls on his knees (as if it happened accidentally) and accepts his loss, and says Amba that he wouldn’t be able to solve her problem. Amba says, now I’m not interested to marry, my only objective is to kill Bhishma. She performs a tough penance to Kartikeya, He appears and asks her wish. She says, I want to kill Bhishma. Kartikeya says, that’s impossible as long as he holds a bow in battle field and he decides to die. However, I presents you a garland, which when worn by any king, can defeat him in a battle. She accepts that garland and asks hundreds of kings to wear that garland and fight Bhishma. None of them accept to do the needful as Bhishma is righteous. Then she throws that garland on the entrance gate of Hastinapur and performs another penance to please Shiva. Shiva appears and asks her, hears her and says that her desire would result only in her next life. She ends her life by burning herself in her yogagni, to take birth immediately. In next life, she takes birth as a woman. She realizes Bhishma wouldn’t fight a woman, and again she performs a penance to please Shiva and change as a man, Shikhandi as Drupada’s son. Meanwhile, before Ambica and Ambalika could become preganants, Vichitraveerya dies of kshaya (TB). Satyavati asks Bhishma to mate with widows, Ambica and Ambalika, which is dharmic in Dwapara to continue the dynasty. But Bhishma disagrees to break his vow, and advices Satyavati to bring a great man who has no disease in bodily pleasures but only performs mating as the dharmic act of continuing the dynasty. She prays to her son, Vyasa, and he agrees to do the needful and gives birth to Dritarashtra to Ambika, Pandu to Ambalika and Vidura to a daasi lady. Their children: Pandavas and Kauravas, their story and war of Mahabharata continues. Bhishma fought on Kauravas side.
4. When Yudishtir and Shakuni were playing dice game, Shakuni under influence of alcohol forgets to bet Draupadi before betting Yudishtir. Yudishtir loses the game and becomes slave of Shakuni. Now Shakuni remembers to bet Draupadi, wins and orders to pull Draupadi (who was rajaswala) to the court and orders Dushyasana to strip her. During that time, Draupati asks a question naming Bhishma and Drona to say whether Yudishtir lost her before losing himself or lost himself before losing me in betting. Since she questioned with names, Bhishma had to answer it. If Bhishma says that betting her was a fluke, Draupadi would get extremely furious of Kaurava’s act and may curse them to death (which may end the dynasty of Dritarashtra). So he answers, if the personification of Dharma, Yudishtir himself did an act of betting you, it is difficult for me to say whether the act of betting you is dharmic. For this ONLY instance of losing dharma in his life, Krishna orders Arjuna to shoot arrows from neck to toe in Kurukshetra. During Mahabharata war, Duryodhana used to daily insult Bhishma of his incompetence of not killing Arjuna. On 9th day, Bhishma shows his extreme fierceful warrior form killing thousands of soldiers, horses, elephants with rains of arrows (holding bow in Mandalakara). Bhishma knows that Krishna is form of Vishnu and he is a faithful devotee of Krishna, but vows to make Krishna to hold a weapon against his vow. Bhishma shoots arrows to Arjuna and infuriates Krishna, who jumps from the chariot takes a wheel and goes to attack Bhishma. Bhishma kneels down and prays Krishna to end his life, meanwhile Arjuna holds Krishna’s feet and stops him from fighting their war and cools him down. Upon Krishna’s advice, Pandavas go to Bhishma’s shelter in battlefield at night and ask Bhishma to reveal the secret of killing him. Bhishma says, as long as I hold bow in battlefield, no body can win me. I will leave bow only in few instances: if anyone shows their back, if a woman fights the war, if anyone’s flag falls down. None of you would stoop to bring a woman to war, none of you are cowards to show your back, and none of your flags will fall. So the only way to make me leave my bow is to bring Shikandi who is waiting to kill me. He is a woman changed to man. If he appears in the battle field, I would leave my bow (Astra-sanyasa), in that moment you can shoot me. Arjuna cries a lot for killing their grand father, who took care of the whole dynansty, especially Pandavas who were fatherless kids. When Shikhandi appears in battle field, Bhishma drops his bow, and Arjuna shoots thousands of arrows shooting from toe to neck. While Bhishma waits to leave his body in Uttarayana holy half of the year, lying on the bed of arrows he was shot with, Krishna sends Yudishtir to go and learn all great vurtues of dharma from him befre such a great personage leaves this world. (part of Shanti parva and full of Anusashana parva).
5. Bhishma-sthuti - Finally they (Pandavas) got the empire, the personification of Dharma, Yudishtir is the king, son of the king of Gods, Arjuna holds the king of all sashtras, the great Gandiva, his charioteer is none other than the king of all space and time in universe, accompanied by the king of strength, Bhima, even such Pandavas are not spared by troubles. This poem gives confidence and strength to all who is facing troubles because: shOko nAshayate dhairyam, shOko nAshayate shrtam, shOko nAshayate sarvaM, nAsti shOka samo ripu: (from Ramayana) - As the Ekadasi minutes approached (Bhishma’s time to leave the body), he focused his eyes to Krishna and prayed: trijagan mOhana nIla kAnti tanunuddIpimpa prAbhAta nIraja bandhu prabhamaina cElamu payin ranjilla nIlAlaka vraja samyukta mukhAravinda mati sevyambai vijrumbimpa mA vijayunchEru vannekAdu madinAveshinchumellappudun (Let the one who outshines the glow of all 3 worlds, wearing the yellow silken cloth like the rising sun, the one who befriended my dear Arjuna, be always in my heart!) - Always (with out a break), let me meditate and pray the lord, who left the comfort of reclining on Adi Sesha, in the ocean of milk, while mother Lakshmi pressing His feet, giving his appearance only to Yogis who can see only through their eye of wisdom (Jnana-netra) in Vaikuntha, to chariot Arjuna in hot sun and dust of battle field rose by running horses and elephants in the battle field. The one who controls the whole universe with his signs of eye is today following the orders of Arjuna as his charioteer. Such face with sweat who doesn’t have to take the effort of charioting shall always my heart. - On 10th day when I (Bhishma) shot arrows at Arjuna from top to bottom, seeing such Arjuna who is under Your protection, you got extremely angry and You jumped from the chariot holding chariot-wheel to attack me, while your ear hanging’s shine covered whole sky, all worlds in your belly shook with that jump, while your upper cloth (uttareeya) fell down, while Arjuna ran behind you, held your feet to plead you from fighting their war, like a thin-waisted lion attacking an elephant, to save your devotee Arjuna, such a lord shall always be in my heart! - The one who taught the extract of all Vedas and Upanishads, Gita to Arjuna to giveup his ignorance (maya), and made him say: “nashtO mOha: smritir labdha:” and fight the battle, such a lord be always be in my heart. - Messenger and driver are two not-very-respectable posts, are accepted by the lord (Pandava-doota and Partha Sarathi), if the lord is the charioteer of our Panchendriyas, the route is always dharmic. Such a lord be always be in my heart. - Like how one Sun appears as one for each of us (appears like many, but it’s only one), at such lord’s lotus feet shall stay my heart. With his Yogic power, Bhishma once let his life leave his body, which left his heart and united in the lord, as he said “vanamAlI gadIshAngI shankI chakrI ca nandaki, srImAn nArAyanO vishnur vAsudEvO virakshatu” in Vishnu Sahasranamam. 6. On such a great Bhishma Ekadasi, every human being should give tarpana to him for their gratitude for teaching so many Dharmas to the whole humanity through practicing them (Bhishma‘acharya’).

NOTES: SB07 Story of Bhishma
In Bhagavatam, only Bhishma stuti to Krishna is described, but here stories from Devi Bhagavata and Mahabharata are included too.
5. Bhishma-sthuti
- Finally they (Pandavas) got the empire, the personification of Dharma, Yudishtir is the king, son of the king of Gods, Arjuna holds the king of all sashtras, the great Gandiva, his charioteer is none other than the king of all space and time in universe, accompanied by the king of strength, Bhima, even such Pandavas are not spared by troubles. This poem gives confidence and strength to all who is facing troubles because: shOko nAshayate dhairyam, shOko nAshayate shrtam, shOko nAshayate sarvaM, nAsti shOka samo ripu: (from Ramayana)
- As the Ekadasi minutes approached (Bhishma’s time to leave the body), he focused his eyes to Krishna and prayed:
trijagan mOhana nIla kAnti tanunuddIpimpa prAbhAta nIraja
bandhu prabhamaina cElamu payin ranjilla nIlAlaka
vraja samyukta mukhAravinda mati sevyambai vijrumbimpa
mA vijayunchEru vannekAdu madinAveshinchumellappudun
(Let the one who outshines the glow of all 3 worlds, wearing the yellow silken cloth like the rising sun, the one who befriended my dear Arjuna, be always in my heart!)
- Always (with out a break), let me meditate and pray the lord, who left the comfort of reclining on Adi Sesha, in the ocean of milk, while mother Lakshmi pressing His feet, giving his appearance only to Yogis who can see only through their eye of wisdom (Jnana-netra) in Vaikuntha, to chariot Arjuna in hot sun and dust of battle field rose by running horses and elephants in the battle field.
Your doing really a great job by adding notes. Can you add for all videos. It's easy while refreshing what we understood.
