    I have an adult male Labrador and this handles all of his waste from the back yard. I add septic tank treatment to promote decomposition. Egg shells, coffee grounds, some leaves and dirt. Important to add water often to keep it moist and hot. Place in a spot where it gets good direct sunlight as the composter will become hot and decomposition will occur quicker.

      Joan Lange I actually installed it 2 months ago and it’s not even 1/4 of the way full. It’s been working like a charm it breaks down quickly . I feed my German shepherds raw so their waste is clean and easy to scoop up and honestly this compost has been a life saver. I only had to instal the one. 👍🏼

      Shane Fox You would need about 18 of these. Less if you can get bigger containers.
      Ensure they are kept away from areas that food is grown, or drinking water is sourced.
      Don't use the 'manure' for growing food, using for flowers/trees is ok.

      microbes usually do not go that far. soil and water tables have a great natural way of filtering water riding it if toxins and microbes. and doing this will not create a major problem. as for the seven dogs, i would suggest creating more than one place to dump their waste if they are large. if they are small then one should be fine if you use the septic starter.

    I don't doubt this is an effective method for many, but I would like to warn this may be dependent on climate.
    I live in Ireland, less sunshine, more rain and wet earth.
    I followed these instructions about 4 months ago. It hasn't worked at all. I now have a hole full of poop that's going nowhere fast.

    • @lostintheelectricalaisle5318
      @lostintheelectricalaisle5318 7 років тому +2

      Jeremy Walker, yeah I have clay about 3-4ft down and I've found this method didn't work for me either. Digging a hole, using it until it is full, covering it and moving to a new spot works for me. Couple years and it is gone and you can reuse the spot. I have the unused area for it though. Also rainy cooler climate, but even summer it was a no go. I even added some stones to the bottom to hopefully allow some liquified portion to drain down. Also tried one more septic tank style where the bottom isn't cut out so it can digest and liquify, and much more drainage from the rest of the bucket. That worked the best, but probably because I could hit it with a jet of water from the hose and liquify it even more. Might have just needed to add in something like peatmoss or even just soil or grass clippings to prevent it from just turning into a block of poo. At least with the hole it is easy to pull out.

    • @remittanceman9393
      @remittanceman9393 9 років тому +2

      If you bury it you won't be able to remove the compost as it will be at the bottom. I think the first question you need to answer is: how often do your kids fall into your other wheelie bins? If they haven't ever managed this, then there's a pretty good chance they won't take a nose dive into a bin filled with dog poo.
      If they do manage to get into your wheelie bins on a fairy regular basis, and standard discipline and warnings won't work, then either put the bin somewhere the kids can't get at it or pop-rivet some sort of latch which is too stiff for little fingers onto the lid.

    Why are they calling it a digester isn’t it a septic system

  • @johnpearcey
    @johnpearcey 6 років тому +4

    A few things not quite right here. Firstly, those are not air-holes. No air will get in them that far below the soil. They are there primarily to let out excess fluid. Secondly, this is not the best idea if you have high ground water level. In my area in Ireland, there is a layer of clay only 3ft below the surface which holds water above it (and it rains a lot here!). In this case there is a higher risk of pathogens leaking out and being carried off by the water which might pollute nearby drinking wells and streams. Thirdly, this method is anaerobic composting which is very slow and very smelly. However, any water in the bin will keep the smells below the surface, but the lid is mandatory! Finally, it is not correct that you cannot use the composted remains in the garden. But because the method is slow, the bucket needs to remain undisturbed (i.e. no fresh poop!) for a long time. 2 years is usually the recommended time.
