The story I had was different. What happened was the rainbow fish was really nice. And beautiful. Then one day a fish came along and said, "Hey rainbow fish. Can I please have one of your beautiful scales?!" "My scales?" Replied the rainbow fish. " yes your scales! Please? Just one? You have so many already! " The rainbow fish looked at the little fish and said, "Oh alright." And he gave up his scale. Later all the other fish realized he was giving up his scales. So all of them asked for one. And not just the shiny ones. The rainbow fish kindly gave up his scales for _all_ the fish around him. Then one day... The rainbow fish felt a bit sad. He was happy seeing all the fish around him happy because they each have a beautiful different colored scale. But the rainbow fish was also really sad, cause he only had one scale left. And it was shiny. Then a fish swam up to him and said, "Hey rainbow fish! Wanna play?" The fish said kindly. " Not right now. I am not feeling like playing right now. " The rainbow fish replied. "Oh. Well then can I _please_ have a rainbow scale? You gave everyone else one! Except me! Come one rainbow fish! Please????" The rainbow fish looked down at the little fish and sighed. He then turned and look at his last scale and said, " But this is my last scale... " "But you gave everyone else's a scale! I promise I'll take good care of it! Also it is really shiny! I always wanted a shiny scale! " The rainbow fish thought what the little fish said was true. So he gave up his last scale and gave it to the fish. "Wow thanks so much!" The fish said. And swam off to show it to their friends. The rainbow fish swam away really sad. Because now all his scales where gone! (I forget if he grew them back. Or if this happened:) Later all the fish realized how sad the rainbow fish was. So a fish swam up to the rainbow fish and asked, "Hey rainbow fish -" " No I am not giving any of my scales away today. So you can leave. " interrupted the rainbow fish. "Actually you already gave me one of your scales before. I was the first to ask you. But what I really was gonna ask was, Why do you seem so sad?" The rainbow fish signed and looked like he was about to cry. " I have all my scales away! Now I have none for me! " He said. The other fish saw how upset the rainbow fish was. So they told all their friends about it. So later the next day, all the fish came up to the rainbow fish and gave him a scale of there own. Later the rainbow fish became rainbow again and was all happy! And also... He got 5 new shiny scales again! After that day, the rainbow fish decided that it was time to stop giving away scales. Because even though it felt good for sharing and being kind, He had to know to not _only_ care about others, but to also care for himself too. Ourselves need love too.
Honestly? This is a VERY important lesson to teach kids I relate to the rainbow fish so much in that version because I am such a people pleaser and I genuinely can never say no to others :’) I’m very sure a lot of kids out there have struggled/are struggling with the same thing and I think this version of the book would really help them!!
@@mutantmunstercheese1 I don't remember where my mom got it, I just remember her reading it to me and reading it myself when I was younger. But I could have sworn that _that_ was how the book went
@rosepetunia1829 I love this version so much better 😭 I get what the other versions was trying to say but they did it very poorly (im sorry if my English is bad) Also anatomically speaking a fish's scale can regrow overtime but only some + A fish losing a scale causes them discomfort 😢
This isn't teaching kids to share. It's teaching them to buy their friends and to sacrifice what makes them special so other people can feel better about themselves.
Oh, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt about this story. I'm working in a childcare and the lesson plan uses this story to teach them about sharing. But after reading it, i felt so horrible and unable to relate how it links to sharing but rather about how materialistic friends are made and being pressured by the social. So whenever I told children about this story, I would tell them I hate this story and the reason behind it and that everyone has their right to decide if they want to share their belongings, but shouldn't hog onto items that aren't theirs and hence that's when sharing comes in. Now I am again given this story as their speech and drama, I'm already planning to make changes to the story. Just happened to see someone else commented about another version of rainbow fish which I think is better. Now I'm thinking either to use version 2 story or just make some changes to this version (instead of scale but maybe shiny shells picked up by rainbow and worn on its body etc) then incorporate about working hard to achieve their own rainbow scales.😂
This is why I don't get this book. It's just... I can't explain but who would DO that? The other fish need to be more grateful. They are literally asking "Hey. I want your finger."
@@veve2484 Again, in real life that would be a pretty disturbing request. But the author intended it to be an allegory of how giving makes you feel even better than hoarding for yourself. And the other fish did seem pretty grateful to me. The first thing the little blue fish did when he Rainbowfish gave him one of his scales was say "Oh thank you! Thank you, Rainbowfish!" And the other fish accepted him as their friend afterwards. What more do you want?
Maybe my memory isn't what is used to be, but I definitely don't remember the book going this way. I thought the moral of the story was to NOT give everyone a piece of you just to have friends. Imagine giving everyone a key to your heart/brain just to not be lonely. This misleads kids very young.
6:06-6:13 The way the barracuda gets his head stuck in the mirror really reminds me of the scene in _Little Mermaid_ where the shark gets his head stuck in an anchor. Rainbow even mimics Flounder's raspberry!
I think the detail with the barracuda was added to the story to say that by giving up his shining scales, Rainbow Fish gained an additional benefit-when he was the most beautiful fish in the ocean, he was a target for barracudas (SeaWorld tells us that real-life barracudas are attracted to shiny things) and by giving up his most prized possessions he also was no longer a target for barracudas.

It’s been so long since I saw this on VHS. What’s the name of the dinosaur shirt that came along with it? There was a song called ‘it’s called courage, it’s believing in yourself...’ good stuff.
It would've been better if it was just one plain fish that was ALREADY friends with the Rainbow Fish, instead of a bunch of them gossiping about the Rainbow Fish... And maybe the "plain" fish can just ask to "try on" one scale.

The haters need to RELAX - a whole lot of damaged people projecting their own baggage onto a children's story here. The point of the story is pretty obvious:
1) Humble yourself - don't be haughty
2) Sharing is good
3) Friends/community is true happiness
"BuT iT's HiS bOdY" - kids like animal stories, and animals don't tend to have a lot in the way of consumer goods to give to children. The author is using the shiny scales as a convenient combination of personal beauty (vanity) and material wealth (greed) to impart an Aesop about not getting trapped by either. The fish isn't in pain, hell he might even grow the scales back. The author isn't advocating that you go out and donate kidneys, lungs and corneas left and right - the point is that there is sacrifice involved in charity, you inherently cannot give something away without depriving yourself, that's exactly WHY charity is a virtue.
"ThE oThEr FiSh aRe BuLLiEs" - the other fish are asking the exact kind of "can I borrow/have?" question kids constantly do without much tact. Substitute scales for 'toys' or 'lollies' if you can't make that leap on your own. The other fish aren't avoiding him because he didn't give them scales, they're excluding him because he's acting like a pompous jerkoff that's too hot for them. They aren't threatening him with isolation unless he gives them the scales - he could have explained that he doesn't want to, but instead he went off on the little blue fish.
"ThEyR'e jUsT gOnnA kEEp TaKiNg FrOm HiM" - really? Because the author was pretty clear in ensuring the fish kept one of his scales (aka as much as he needed).
"iT's SoCiAlISm" - American individualism at its finest. In a self-absorbed world, it seems like the slightest piece of generosity feels like torture.
So, 2 things:
1. That raspberry blowing tidbit, reminds me of "The Little Mermaid."
2. For some reason, I like the lobster.

3:22 nothing like a kid asking for a little piece of your skin 💀 4:43 not people treating him like a outcast bc he wouldn’t give his skin away but I get the thing about him being a bit arrogant 7:05 not a supposed wise octopus telling him to give away his glittery skin bc it will make him “happy” 8:39 not him having to give away things to get people to like him
Now if I looked at a pretty person and told them to give me a piece of their skin that would be weird but since it a fish, it’s OK to give away some of their scales, even though if they did, it would make them bleed
According to the wise octopus 🐙, beauty doesn’t win anything. That’s the reason why she advised the Rainbow Fish to give his shiny scales to the other fish who are his friends and he has to discover that it’s the way to happiness. I think of her advice as an allegory and symbolism.
What did the rainbow fish and the female wisest octopus discuss all the way from 6:18 to 7:46?

This kinda isn't fair
I remember this as a kid
3:31 selfishness and rudeness doesn’t get him anywhere
The music soundtrack reminds me of the S8-12 soundtrack from Thomas.
It’s been so long since I saw this on VHS. What’s the name of the dinosaur shirt that came along with it? There was a song called ‘it’s called courage, it’s believing in yourself...’ good stuff.
Dazzle the Dinosaur I used to have the book
Rainbow Fish is rude, selfish, and arrogant!
No wonder nobody wanted to be with him!
At least he learned his lesson about thinking of others.😊
That’s the idea of the story
Theis brings back memories
Rainbow Fish (1992)
Bully’s in a nutshell
Great story!
Moral lesson of story is that beauty doesn’t win anything
Moral of the story is that to have friends you must give them access to your body parts. Sounds like a me too nightmare@@nicosy282
0:43 bro is having a stroke
beautiful story❤❤❤❤❤
6:13
*Little Mermaid reference*
Ya big bully 😝
I have not watched this since elementary school ;-;
*im that old*
thanks so much! grazie
I would've been funny if the octopus was red lmao
It would've been better if it was just one plain fish that was ALREADY friends with the Rainbow Fish, instead of a bunch of them gossiping about the Rainbow Fish... And maybe the "plain" fish can just ask to "try on" one scale.
Really Nice
The wise octopus sounds like Yzma
What made you think of that?
I REMEBER WATCHING THIS AT MY GRANDMAS HOUSE
Hey we can be friends
If you rip off your own flesh and let me wear it
Ah yes, teaching our kids about communism in the most subtle of ways
I have a book to this show
