    Hope you are reading comments, even on your old videos. You are inspiring so many of us. Quick comment about your car keyring with all the keys (and other stuff). Reduce the weight as much as possible. The weight will abnormally wear out the key mechanism (the switch) and you'll have intermitted and/or no starts. Anyway, keep making videos about reuse and adapting tools. Thanks!

    You can just use a sepic converter with multiposition switch to set voltages for all your devices instead of inverter to make 230V and wastefully convert them down back to small voltages. You wouldnt need all those adapters while charging in the car and it would be more efficient and safer. BTW I am really happy that you are back making awesome videos. Thanks.

    • @ThePostApocalypticInventor
      @ThePostApocalypticInventor  9 років тому +2

      It is true, that you don't really need an inverter like this to charge bateries. But this is about versatility. It ensures, that any laptop, phone, camera or who knows what, whether it is mine, or a friends can simply be charged in the car without the need for preparation. The original chargers will not have to be modified.

    Very interesting! Not something i would do to my car since its rather recent model, at least to that extend. Although i am planning to do something similar in my bike. I d love to add a voltmeter for the battery, a usb charger and a "call indicator LED" as well as a connector to which a solar panel will attach and the battery will charge when its parked in my open type garage!
    Your projects are amazing mainly for the reason that they are simple, useful and robust (or at least you make them seem simple!) Keep it up! Good to have the channel going again!

    • @ThePostApocalypticInventor
      @ThePostApocalypticInventor  9 років тому +8

      +Proyectos LED Hey there :) Charging the battery directly from the 12V source by means of a switching converter would be more efficient. But that approach would also mean, that the system would be much less versatile. The good thing about having a 230V outlet is, that the charger of any phone, camera, laptop etc. can be plugged in without the need of any further preparation. Let's say a friend is with me in the car: He brought his laptop and wants to charge it: There will be no time to first build a custom charger for that battery :)
      Also: All of those cameras and phones use batteries with different weirdly shaped form factors, which would require me to custom build battery holders for each of those devices, some of which I might not even use anymore in a few months time. The result would be, that I would have a rather large device taking up space with battery holders that will not be required anymore. The efficiency of the charging process is also not really important, since the overall power needed is very low.
      Long story short: In this case, versatility is more important for me than efficiency.

    why would you convert from 12VDC to AC just to have to convert it back to 5VDC to charge your camera battery?

    • @alyoshapearce5985
      @alyoshapearce5985 8 років тому +3

      Wesley Hand if you think about it that's what we all do all the time energy has to be converted to make it useful. Why burn coal just to convert it to electricity so you can heat your house with an electric coil? The answers so you can get the energy from one place to another and in this case only few centimetres.

    • @w5102274
      @w5102274 8 років тому +8

      alyosha pearce ok I get that but why not just reduce the 12VDC to 5VDC and save the trouble and wasted energy

    • @tmburns4
      @tmburns4 5 років тому

      Is that what's happening here? My understanding is that 12VDC comes from the car and splits: one 12VDC line to the AC inverter, one 12 VDC line to one set of posts, and one 12VDC line to the buck converter that puts out 5VDC for the second set of posts and the USB outlets. Am I mistaken?

  • @alexzirnea

    Awesome job! I find the inverter a rather inefficient way to charge those batteries, and I would hack them and find the voltage it supplies to the charge controller, and work that way up into adapting the 12v to the voltage that the charger requires. typically those batteries are just 3.7v so you might get off by supplying 5v to the charger/adapter

    • @ThePostApocalypticInventor
      @ThePostApocalypticInventor  9 років тому +2

      +XanderZ Installing the inverter is more about versatility than efficiency. The good thing is, that all kinds of chargers can be used spontaneously. For example when friends are in the car and they bring there laptop. Or when I use equipment that I don't have with me every day. Modding all those chargers beforehand or building a charger for the form factors of all those different battery types (which I might not be using anymore in a few months) would not be worth the effort. Efficiency is also much less important if the overall power needed (like with the camera batteries) is very low.

      @alexzirnea 9 років тому

I bought it 5 years ago and it looked very bad at the time, but I gave it a good overhaul and it works like on day one. It's an industrial grade German made AEG drill press build around the 1960s. It is super rugged and nearly indestructible. I absolutely love it and I use it every day.

      +𝖘 𝖍 𝖎 𝖗 𝖔 Most people these days have no "eye" for good quality. They buy new scrap from home improvement shops all the time and wonder that it's all broken after 2 years. I buy "oldies but goodies" and I take care of my tools, because I love them :D. In my opinion it's a much better strategy for many things.

    • @shiro-r4m
      @shiro-r4m 9 років тому

      I like to think that I have a good eye for quality, mainly because I love to make things myself. Like blacksmithing, wood- and metalworking, I just love doing those things.
      Speaking of which, there are way too many things that I love to do. Being it with computers, knifemaking or sports, damn, don't get me started on sports. Parkour is pretty much my life hehe.
      Oops sorry, back to my point: I have found quality new tools that don't cost a fortune but I see those about once every year which makes them quite rare. But with machinery like a drill press or a lathe, old&restored is the way to go.

    Is it a good idea to use the Car starter battery with an inverter? Wouldn't it be good to sacrifice one of those battery chargers to modify it for using with car because I'm pretty sure inside of that charger the 220V AC is stepped down to smaller amount first!
    & I believe there are some small chips or something that can make it possible to convert the USB to kinda auto negotiation type and can deliver higher current to suitable device. I once kept D+ and D- floating, and the phone won't consume more than 1A although my circuit could provide up to 3A and the original charger for that phone delivered 2A.

  • @TheSageDad
    @TheSageDad 9 років тому

    You powered all of that with the leads from the factory cigarette lighter? Most cars that I've seen use dinky 18 or 16 gauge wires for that... I'd think if you are running the inverter and the buck converter at the same time, you might draw too much current and blow the fuse, no? Or worse, cause a fire by melting the lines? I've done a ton of emergency vehicle wiring, and generally we'd run dedicated 12 or 10 gauge wires minimum from the battery -- most cars have a knock-out in the firewall for aftermarket mods. Just a thought -- else you might be getting a new car sooner than you thought!

    • @ThePostApocalypticInventor
      @ThePostApocalypticInventor  9 років тому

      The fuses of the car are actually supposed to prevent fire. They are sized in such a way, that the wire is not burdened with currents larger than the rated value. Furthermore: I guess I will never draw more than 50W from both devices combined. It's really just about charging small apliances.

    Enjoyable video. Wonder how you will pass HU with this modification :)

      +OR-Khan The good thing is that I passed HU just a couple of weeks ago. So I won't need to go there anytime soon. Should I really go there again in two years( which I don't think with this car), then it is just about unscrewing 4 screws and unplugging one plug and that's it.

    why aren't they smoothing the chunky output of the inverter? wouldn't it be just a matter of adding a capacitor for lowpass filtering? what am i missing?

    Nice job as usual, however are you aware that by adding the inverter you may be invalidating your insurance? I heard about this on a UK consumer radio program, where a man had his car insurance cancelled after he'd had an accident because his bumper and wing mirror were non standard VW fitted. You know what insurance companies are like when they have to pay you money. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

      I'm pretty sure, that the ensurance companies will look for every possible way, not to pay. However: There are many parts on my car already that are not standard Opel equipment, because these parts are not even produced anymore. And were are talking about components, that are actually relevant for the car's safety. But your concern is still valid and I will try to inform myself, if there are clear rules in place for this type of modification.

    you have to add a 'fire nuke/destroy world' red button under clear cube protector so nobody accidentally hits it. thatd be a good way to fire the missiles you talked about.

    Great job man.
    You have too much load on your car ignition key and that may break your lock.
