    Hi Dr. Gauri, is their anything else other than great scores, LORs, USCE that IMGs can add to their application to stand out?

      no disrespect at all but why is it so desirable for IMGs to practice in the U.S.? is it seen as a major mark of success? are there too many doctors in India or respective home country? too much competition? i'm just curious, as a U.S. medical student :)

    • @ast1848
      @ast1848 6 років тому +3

      Not sure. But i can speak for myself, Im a Canadian and their are only 17 med schools in Canada and you can imagine the competition. Its normal for people to try for 2-5 years just to get in. So many Canadian go to Carib schools, do USMLEs, do US residencies and then come back to canada (or stay in US). Not sure what the motive is for Indian or other forgien country students.

    Hi, I'm considering applying to IMG programs. If you don't mind me asking, which school did you attend and what was your experience like looking for residency programs? What types of things should I keep a look out for while going about my school search? Thanks for the video!

    Hey thank you for making this video it's very helpful. Can you please take a minute and tell me if it's essential to appear in USMLE step 1 before applying/doing hand on clinical *rotations (not observership or research) as an IMG ? Please reply

      @@excuseme1543 : Long post because, well, there is no one answer to this question. For each person the driving force is different. 1. Yes, living in a first world country is still seen as a major marker of success by many people in third world countries, partly true. But not everyone thinks so. Indians respect doctors who are engaged in community service and can treat patients for cheap. Doing so is more desirable than earning a degree in the US/UK.
      2. Doctors in India manage to live a comfortable life, and some of them are actually quite rich. However doctors deal with extreme patient loads (doctor to patient ratio in India is very low), extreme infrastructure limited environments, extreme disrespect and many a times physical assault (Indian state of West Bengal and few others) when they are unable to handle more than 3 patients crashing at the same time. There is a huge dearth of any healthcare support staff - very few well trained nurses (most nurses only do housekeeping and don't like taking responsibility, though there are some amazing trained nurses who are few and far between), no phlebotomists, case managers, nurse practitioners, respiratory/physical/occpnl/speech therapists rare, no child life specialists etc, you get the point. Many doctors feel frustrated for this reason.
      3. There is lack of adequate access to the latest full text medical journals and databases as they are extremely expensive in terms of Indian currency for hospitals to provide it to medical students/doctors. So several physicians like myself find it gratifying to be able to work in a country which is a leader in medical research education. We like to observe how a better medical service system works and how it affects doctors/patients/healthcare staff.
      4. Also very true, getting into a subspecialty is highly competitive. The exam taken once every year is gruelling and requires years of preparation. the number of spots are limited (though increasing quite a lot every 2-3 yrs) compared to number of medical school graduates.
      All these combined is just the tip of the iceberg to the reasons why Indian doctors like studying here in the US. But you must know that only about 0.5 -1% of all doctors in India have that desire. Most study and stay back in India. Example: In our class of 120 graduates, i am one of 2 who desired for and the only one who is actually doing a residency here.

      If you attended a school in which all subjects were taught in English, then the TOEFL is not necessary. You will just need a letter from your school stating that everything was taught in English.

    Thanks a bunch for your video, awesome advice and hope you keep making them! Some constructive advice- the editing is complete shit. If you like, send me some of your vids before posting them and I'll quickly edit them so that it is much smoother. It would be easy to correct music cut in and out, volume issues and even enhance the video with zoom and color changes. Cheers!

    Why do they admit Foreign Visa IMG Doctors when we have US doctors unemployed and not able to get medical residencies? Who is selling our country out?

    I lament your future practicing having read Sandeep Jauhar's, "Doctor".
    Interesting to know if yours will be different. OR.... as with majority of female docs,
    you'll bail after "11 year average" for home & kids.
