  • Holden has gone back to the future, restoring its very first concept car -- the 1969 Holden Hurricane.
    www.holden.com....
    The futuristic research vehicle described as an experiment "to study design trend, propulsion systems and other long range developments" has been restored to its former glory as a labour of love by a dedicated group of Holden designers and engineers.
    Code named RD 001; the Hurricane is a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, two-seater sports car which incorporates a remarkable array of innovative features and technology, much of it way ahead of its time.
    Features include:
    electronic digital instrument displays,
    station-seeking radio,
    automatic temperature control air conditioning,
    rear vision camera
    automated route finder
    Holden Hurricane goes on show to the public for the first time at Motorclassica, Melbourne, October 21-23

    I would totally drive this. And it doesn't even look like it was made in 1969. It looks like it was made 20 years later. Can't believe they only made one of these

    I remember seeing this in the Holden Musuem in Echuca back in the early 90's
    It was just sitting in a corner neglected. I am glad they pulled it out and fixed it up.

    Worked in Holden Engineering Dept well after this car was conceived but remember hearing stories from the the old tradies about how many tipped their own time into this cars being well after their normal daily shift had finished. Such was their passion for this cars existence . . . . that was Holden then . . . remember those times forever as the old Fishermans bend plant is pulled apart . . . Golden Holden memories

      Did you work on the 3-LJ GTR V8 Prototypes in 1972 ? have you any Photos of them etc and do you recall who bought the Pink and White LJ GTR Prototypes, the Orange one was Converted back to a 6 Cyl and Tendered in Feb 1975 and Brewster and Maddern in Kyabram won the Tender.

      Are they actually going to tear it down or will it be repurposed for something else?....something I worry about with the Elizabeth plant I worked at for 10 years...they just seem in an awful hurry to take away any chance of using them again when they have so much potential.

    Congrats,lovely to see it bought back to it's former glory.Must have been a wild time for you blokes back then.Doing the Hurricane,organising the Torana six and getting the HQ sorted.Opportunity missed however with the GTR/X Torana. I reckon.the punters would have gone nuts for it over the Datsun 240Z.Congrats again for the resto job.Be proud of yourselves for the original 1969 effort and the preservation of something special.

    I remember this car as a 10 year old.It was an absolute incredible car for it's time and has aged wonderfully.Back then there was Lambo ,Ferrari,Ford and a few others that made cars like the Muira and GT40,wow factor cars.Then Holden brings out their Hurricane concept car , a home grown WOW factor car,how good was that.The Hurricane toured the Show circuit in each state and I got to see it.Thinking of it today, This car should have been put in production then with a 253/308/350 option,and a Repco 5000 motor for A Le Mans car.Today it should be produced in carbon fibre or alloy with a 6.2 n/a v8 with the 6.2SC option.It is still a modern design and not dated.

    • @Kaydencool2013
      @Kaydencool2013 6 років тому

      A current 6.2 v8 wouldn't suit this car if it was built today as the 6.2 is a pushrod v8 and is such old technology. They should have used dohc 32 valve v8s in the Commodores and that's what you would expect in a car like this

    @whatmarc No,Australia didnt go metric till the early 70's..and with the ignition switch,they must have set it up like that,because all Holdens ignition switches turn clockwise,same as any other car.

    '70s Holdens were pretty awesome, too, as were the early '70s Valiant Chargers.....fun fact about the Chargers for those who don't know, btw:
    It's most powerful engine....was a Slant Six.....with Hemi heads! Something you wouldn't have seen in America, I don't think. =D

  • @aussiepaul44

    @whatmarc The ignition switch is on the right side of the steering column on all the major brands in Australia and they turn clockwise. Australia did not adopt the metric system until 1974 although some manufactures used metric measurements to display engine capacity.

    The slant six was developed in the U.S actually (225 cubic inch). The Chrysler
    Valiant was made in the U.S and in Australia. The Valiant pacer was the Dodge Dart there. The 245 and 265 in line six was the Aussie super engines. They had the Hemi heads.

  • @Mechknight73
    @Mechknight73 12 років тому

    @MooreMaryKay Look at the back end and you will think otherwise. This car was a 1960s show car, and this style predated what Chevrolet was doing with the Corvette at the time. This was something Holden did "out the back of the workshop". Their best show car to date was the EFIJY in 2006, which hit the US show scene and cleaned up in awards wherever it went

      There were design rules in 1992 brought in that meant that the very large bongo an HK Monaro could belt out a rhythm on was no longer legal to comply to noise levels. Maximum drive by sound levels at 60km/h were 92 decibels. The average car alarm puts out 100-110 decibels. In the Hurricane's day, two stock hotdog mufflers would have probably been legal on a V8
