What3Words App Helps First Responders Locate Lost People

- A phone app is being used to help first responders locate people who are lost. It's called What3Words and it's a free app you can download to your phone. The Los Angeles fire department recently used What3Words to rescue some California hikers who were stuck in the wilderness. With the help of Texas first responders from the Austin Police Department, Inside Edition put the app to the test.
With my luck my three words would be “on your own.”
“Text. Not. Received.”

It's free for consumers and businesses pay, the company have also threatened legal action against those who made an open version of it so not the best...
An incredible tool to save lives! This is really smart.
I get some people mention no service or dead battery on phone. This isnt an app to save you in every situation, this is just one of many ways you can be prepared. If your phone is dead then yeah you probably will be too.............jokes aside great app, definitely will download this in case i ever get my lazyass to go hiking
Google maps also just has the latitude longitude but ig that’s confusing

This is such an incredibly simple idea. It just takes a few programming keys to make yet its use is invaluable in a lot of situations

And why is this better than the exact coordinates the GPS can provide to 911?

@@GaryJr530 my man, you severely underestimate the stupidity of most of the population, eps people who get lost in the wilderness if you think they ALL can figure out how coordinates work lol. The app is basically to stupid-proof the process for rescuers.
They send you a link? How is this going to work in areas with bad/no reception i.e. places that people get lost?
You probably won't be calling 911 if service is that bad anyway

Have you ever left the house before? Mobile data, it exists. And GPS doesn't use the internet I don't think.
But instead of opening a link, just share your gps location
That might not always work for one your location can be really bad or two not everyone Uses GPS

The app good in all but what happened if your cellphone does not have Signal and you can’t call 911

I can see this helping in open areas, but what if you're in a multi-story building? say you've been kidnapped, blindfolded, you're in an apartment building (or worse, in a basement), will it, at best, know what area of the building you're in (northwest corner, more towards the middle, etc.), but not the apartment number? the police will have to check every apartment & room
I doubt you would have your phone at that point

Well this is mostly used for search & rescue (like for example what happened to the hikers in this video), not really useful for any police raid operations
So the only downfall is that if you lost reception. You're pretty much screwed right?
Ok, I don't get it....a computer or gps is figuring out their location in order to generate those three words....so in theory 911 could directly get their location from the computer/GPS that's already calculated it before hearing those words....isn't this just adding an unnecessary step???
You have to be on the line to be able to pinpoint your location genius, that takes time compared to clicking on a link that sends you your own location.
Having a 3rd party to identify you will take time and minutes count.
What happen to coordinate and to send your location from your phone?
Am i right saying that it wouldn't work in a building because location system is 2D only?

What’s wrong with coordinates?
While the w3w is beneficial for many reasons...but I can't help but think there should be a better app that will instantaneously inform the dispatcher of their whereabouts (Once it is installed and open)...without needing a person replying. And while we're on the subject of what is that app will be useful for the dispatcher, it can be live streaming for evidence-based (to capture in the act), coordinates, or anything that support the dispatcher (or even support to the person who called 911)

Hard to do in areas that DO NOT have GPS signal or any Cell Towers nearby to get a Signal at all. Making the App useless in that case.

Your if you don’t have service your screwed unless you have the new iPhone with satellite service. Or and Apple Watch ultra with a way to back track your trail. So you know where you came from
