A lot of people write about a supposed lack of emotion. I don't agree at all. Perhaps most pianists have inner emotions blocked in their heart, and they release their emotions when playing during concerts. I feel that Yuja Wang doesn't have blocked emotions, because like a child, she always express her emotions right away. So when she is performing, she is totally in the music, not disturbed by anything else, she lives the music. It is an asceticism, a sacrifice. She does not use the score to express her own message, she is totally devoted to the composer. Once she said that the piece she prefers is the piece she is playing in the moment! For me it is a reason why her voice is so crystal clear and recognizable among all. This comment is less relevant for encores pieces that she chooses to play at the end, in a kind of climax

Exactly. I think She Is perfectly able to express feelings, maybe people say that because they see her all composed when she plays, but Just close your eyes...... you will melt right away 🤤❤️

There are many greater than her Franz Liszt being the first as he was a pianist more of a composers followed by Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Claudio Arrau, Barenboim, Cziffra, ect. She’s good but you cant say the best. Okay her voicing of the piece and not only this piece is incredible and her technique is very good but saying that there never was a pianist as good as her is a very bold claim. Though she is better than Valentina Lisita.

THE NEW YORKER by Janet Malcolm " What is one to think of the clothes the twenty-nine-year-old pianist Yuja Wang wears when she performs-extremely short and tight dresses that ride up as she plays, so that she has to tug at them when she has a free hand, or clinging backless gowns that give an impression of near-nakedness (accompanied in all cases by four-inch-high stiletto heels)? In 2011, Mark Swed, the music critic of the L.A. Times, referring to the short and tight orange dress Yuja wore when she played Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto at the Hollywood Bowl, wrote that “had there been any less of it, the Bowl might have been forced to restrict admission to any music lover under 18 not accompanied by an adult.” Two years later, the New Criterion critic Jay Nordlinger characterized the “shorter-than-short red dress, barely covering her rear,” that Yuja wore for a Carnegie Hall recital as “stripper-wear.” Never has the relationship between what we see at a concert and what we hear come under such perplexing scrutiny. Is the seeing part a distraction (Glenn Gould thought it was) or is it-can it be-a heightening of the musical experience?
During the intermission of a recital at Carnegie Hall in May, Yuja changed from the relatively conventional long gold sequinned gown she had worn for the first half, two Brahms Ballades and Schumann’s “Kreisleriana,” into something more characteristically outré. For the second half, Beethoven’s extremely long and difficult Sonata No. 29 in B-Flat, known as the “Hammerklavier,” she wore a dress that was neither short nor long but both: a dark-blue-green number, also sequinned, with a long train on one side-the side not facing the audience-and nothing on the other, so that her right thigh and leg were completely exposed.
As she performed, the thigh, splayed by the weight of the torso and the action of the toe working the pedal, looked startlingly large, almost fat, though Yuja is a very slender woman. Her back was bare, thin straps crossing it. She looked like a dominatrix or a lion tamer’s assistant. She had come to tame the beast of a piece, this half-naked woman in sadistic high heels. Take that, and that, Beethoven! ..."

Its very good. But, honestly, the version from Murray Perahia is better.

That is setting the bar very high because for me, Perahia is THE Mendelssohn pianist. Yuja has years to develop her Mendelssohn playing in her own way, which is different from Perahia's.

I love beauty - which Wang possesses - but - as with so many others - it seems a poor artistic choice to field it in competition with music which is Noumenal in nature and is damaged by physical distractions.

What an astute comment, wholly in agreement. I'm loathed to comment about her attire, as it's always misconstrued as old fashioned or sexist.
With great music, the interpreter should seek to disappear, rather than take centre stage.

Just to add - I think Hilary Hahn the violinist strikes the balance very well always - always lovely gowns that go with herself and the music she is playing - another side to her art.

"Show your beauty and show your talent"? No: Show your talent. Let the beauty of the MUSIC shine without cheapening it by wearing scant clothing. Music is pure. Don't compromise it by combining it with the banality of exposed flesh. There are other venues one can visit to view such things, and they certainly don't include concert halls. I don't see male concert pianists(violinists) performing shirtless and in tight pants! Yuja Wang - "McDonald´s"culture! The money& sex sells culture!!! Yes, sex does sell! The down side is it has a tendency to cheapen and degrade at the same time.

Why do women need high heels? Someone could write their PHD thesis on that , if they could figure it out.

They do not 'need' them, of course. Two reasons, they make the muscles of the leg stand out in a way that men and women have found attractive in our modern world. And, actually for women who are short (Yuja is a whisper under 5' tall) they add height-just like lifters do for short men.
