Hey y’all SAG-AFRTA/WGA resources will be in the description! Wanted to use this to address my comment about Mattel being run by all men and how that is portrayed in the movie - this isn’t true and I should’ve added more detail. While the current CEO and CFO are men, there are plenty of women in leadership roles and the inventor of Barbie Ruth Handler was the first president of the company. However, it is still a systemic issue beyond Mattel and the point I hoped to make was that it feels like an empty commentary coming from a movie like this one. Sorry for any confusion.

Isn’t Mattel being run only by men just blatantly not true? Their board of directors is like 6/11 woman, on top of having had a female CEO for over 30 years. What exactly is the patriarchal humor against Mattel supposed to get Mattel to change corporately. It just seems like projecting something about corporate America that just really isn’t that true anymore to a harming degree.
I think this movie is massively oversold by the reviews just due to its political humor. I really didn’t think it was a good movie, and that’s not even getting into the plot problems, but if someone can explain what I’m missing than I’m all ears.

I’m glad this got pointed out. It’s easy to just go along with what is interpreted on screen but truth is everyone in charge at Mattel isn’t a man like the film would like you to think. And the CEO for over 30 years was a woman. The literal rise of Barbie happened under the direction and leadership of a woman.

Great review as always, Sydney! I’m excited to see Barbie hopefully sometime next week after I’m seeing Oppenheimer Friday night. I think Greta Gerwig has proven to be a great and talented director after Lady Bird and Little Women which I both liked. The sets and costumes look off the charts, it looks funny and entertaining and it seems like both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were born to play Barbie and Ken. Hoping to enjoy this one.

"play guitar at you" might be the best line of the movie 😂 i think you're right, the tonal shift between the actual emotional moments and the "tumblr art posts" made me interested to see how the script was influenced by studio. Theres a lot of big company roasts in movies now but yeah they dont care because the $ they can get from it is far superior. Also Mattel or whoever would rather align themselves with something like this so its a "if i go down you do too" type pact, they cant be fully attacked by the public for their record of misogyny without also Barbie movie (a good thing) getting attacked, and the audience wont want to do that

LOL you missed the entire point. We live in a society where men hold the power and have historically kept women in subjugation/inequality since the dawn of civilization. The film addresses this and slightly flips things around in order for people to see how women have always felt. Barbie even acknowledges how she treated Ken, and encourages him to exist as his own autonomous person toward the end. Addressing the patriarchy and toxic masculinity is not equivalent to bashing men. It points out reality in a humorous and clever way to encourage introspection. It's hilarious because this is the reality of how men have behaved toward women, and now men are butthurt when their own reflection is shown to them in the mirror. If men were actually secure and confident in their masculinity, addressing these issues wouldn't be a problem. As a man, I love this film and kudos to Greta and everyone involved for being so bold in tackling these topics.

When movies like James Bond or for that matter almost every second movie in Hollywood, treat women as mere objects or even say so called famous sitcom for that matter like HIMYM where a narcissistic stalk and harass woman all throughout the series and still could get away and get called a nice guy, then why can't a movie made by and especially for women be unapologetic to show what women are made to feel on daily basis by awful man. Why is it that the same man who like to treat and enjoy it when women are treated as a mere object feel existential crisis when their toxic maneuvers are being called out and when they are shown as a mere accessory.

The film Barbie despite its potential box office success, disappoints on multiple levels, as it pushes an overly political agenda and fails to deliver a genuinely empowering message. Rather than being the enjoyable and lighthearted comedy it was marketed as, the film veers into a feminist lecture that alienates its audience, including the fans of Barbie. The director, Greta Gerwig, seems to have infused the movie with her ultra-woke mindset, resulting in a lack of nuance and depth.
From the outset, the movie feels like a Trojan horse, disguising its heavy-handed agenda of perceived male hatred and an obsession with dismantling the patriarchy. The supposed empowerment narrative turns out to be a thinly veiled man-bashing exercise that trades humor for misguided messages about sexism and patriarchy. Even the Barbie-Ken romance is undermined, perpetuating a narrative that emasculates male characters rather than promoting healthy, equal relationships.
As the plot unfolds, the movie takes an unexpected turn with Barbie's struggle with menopause, a topic that feels disconnected and adds to the film's lack of coherence. The portrayal of Ken as a deranged antagonist and the subsequent attempt to establish a matriarchal society in Barbie land further detract from the movie's credibility.
The film's failure to balance entertainment with meaningful storytelling exposes larger issues within Hollywood, as it appears more focused on pushing biased feminist agendas than fostering creativity and joy. The movie's divisive and biased messages are harmful, doing a disservice not only to young girls and women but also to men and families.
Moreover, the film's LGBTQ+ connotations may not be inherently problematic, but their execution and portrayal could be concerning, particularly when aimed at a young audience. It is essential to approach such themes with sensitivity and thoughtfulness, considering the age-appropriateness of the content and its potential impact on young minds.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend Barbie to anyone seeking an enjoyable and meaningful cinematic experience. The film's promotion of the fifth wave of feminism seems to have lost sight of what true empowerment means for both women and men. It is a shame that such potential for a masterpiece was squandered by the director's agenda-driven approach, highlighting the broken state of Hollywood today. This film could have been great, but it ultimately falls flat, echoing the problematic trends seen in some Disney films as well.
Considering its flaws, I would advise against letting young audiences, especially nieces and daughters, watch this film. Instead, we should seek content that promotes genuine empowerment and fosters positive values.

As a male, I feel the complete opposite of you. Perhaps you took the film too personal. It was poking fun at itself (the entire concept of Barbie/toy capitalism) and making comments at society in present tense. Neither side displayed was 100% true in my opinion, however that was the point. To make you think and have a reaction. Some of the male themes it addressed do happen currently. And as a male who has hobbies that are more masculine, I chuckled at some of what was shown cause it is true for me cause that is how I am wired.
Some of the themes presented are what is happening in both fairy tale land (IMO where we wish of having the ideal place and goals) and in America. If you disagreed with it, fair, however that does not mean that it does not resonate with many people who will watch it. I am not the primary audience the movie was looking for however I still took a ton from it. It is a much deeper movie than it marketed itself while also being lighthearted and funny at times. I think it was unique and among my favorites this year.

it's not a man hating film, the whole purpose of it all is that it shows parallels between barbieland and the real world. it shows how gender inequality affects both sexes. when ken discovers the patriarchy he had to uphold its values such as the idea that men should never cry, seeing as he was calling himself pathetic for doing so. and who came up with that ideology to begin with, wouldn't it be men? point is it just shines light on how even the concept of barbie, a doll that's capable of anything, a doll whose job is to empower women and young girls are under the hands of men and capitalism. so no calling it a man hating film misses the entire point of the movie.

Mattel is not the main funder of this movie. It's being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Mattel is one of the four production companies making the Barbie movie. Also Margo Robbie in an interview mentions that Mattel had to be spoon-fed the script for almost a hundred things in the script, to get Mattel to sign off on the script. In some instances Mattel executives had to go to the film set to see how things worked, because they were freaked out by some things in the script. So it sounds more like Mattel had to be dragged along to get them to let the film be made.

I think their best bet is to create a Ken movie that can explore the issues that Ken faces, especially in sorting out who he really is apart from Barbie. I never thought Barbie came from a perfect world. She was into dressing nice. She also had a Malibu camper. So, she was fairly rugged and adventurous. Kind of a hippie in a way. Looking at the whole thing kind of irks me.
Just because you like to dress up doesn't mean you are a total plastic ditz. Just because you date a surfer Ken who doesn't do much else, doesn't mean he is some vapid loser. I think Barbie's colors more were orange than pink also. Her camper was orange. She was a beach girl always in bathing suits.

Im conflicted bcuz i loved Little Women & i liked the feminism of that film too...but I did not like that aspect here in Barbie
I think margot is the problem here & not greta, her production is a little 2 radical sometimes, & its kinda ironic bcuz she worked with David O Russel last year. & also u brought up how its a little bit corrupt for this film in general
Its a shame bcuz this movie could hav been & SHOULD have been a home run but now its yet another culture war when it did not need to be...AT ALL

    • @luckyleprechaun-e7h
      @luckyleprechaun-e7h 6 місяців тому

how is it a culture war? I am confused. the film made a point of making sure ken's story and point of view and discovery are very much a prominent part of the film. yes, the film was geared towards girls and women perhaps more than men, but barbie the toy and the brand are as well, so that is to be expected in terms of the brand. it amazes me that folks go down this road at all with this film. Barbie is genuinely saying that patriarchy when taken to extreme is bad for women and for men. it is also saying matriarchy when taken to extreme is bad for men and for women too. how are those ideas anything resembling a culture war moment? the extreme of either things makes it tough to be a human being. that is clear to me from BARBIE.
I am a 56 year old gay man. I find it really interesting, and telling that for most of the summers in my adult life I have seen multiple blockbusters in the form of: the Spiderman movies, the batman movies, the x-men movies, the superman movies, the Raiders of the lost ark movies, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, even the Harry Potter movies. those movies from their respective franchises have dominated the summer blockbuster scene for literally the past about 40 years now. when I look at that list-do I see any pattern? any common denominator, at all? hmm. this one summer-for the first time-basically in the history of summer blockbusters we get a BARBIE. one movie, for the first time. and people lose their minds..
woke! culture wars! anti-men! how dare they!!! and on and on and on. I know you weren't being that extreme. but when you bring in the phrase "culture war"-i have to say I honestly don't know what you are talking about. and I don't see or hear or feel any wars going on in BARBIE. i hear a buzz phrase when I hear "culture war" that has been marketed to mask and soften what really, at the core of it, is bigotry and discrimination. truthfully. I hoped people (and I am not saying men-because it wasn't solely men, but mainly men) could be a little more generous based on all of those blockbuster moments I just mentioned. I don't recall their being an uproar around any of those other films when they were released. it is disappointing to see this in people. for me BARBIE was a home run. a major home run. I am glad that the billions it has brought in made it a home run for others too. again, what is the culture war you are speaking of here? and you do remember this film is about a doll. I don't understand how folks have gone down this road, and why they seem to be looking to start a culture war with this film, and that I do not understand (to quote you) AT ALL.

Omg the girlboss millennial feminism churned my stomach too. it was so ehhh to watch even if it was an important message. That being said the themes that were well executed were about reality vs fantasy, clinging onto your inner child, embracing imperfection to be human because perfection isnt attainable. Barbie learning what it means to be human is so beautiful and there are certain moments of womanhood (ie Barbie and the old woman and Barbie + Barbie inventor) that were so heartmoving it did kinda "fix" the millenial girlboss stuff for me. not as annoying anymore then.

So when I saw it I was disappointed and felt like I wasted my money seeing it. But in retrospect it was a decent enough movie. The first half of the movie was pretty funny. @dudwimpole2081 Рік тому +3

A film which targets fascism, beauty standards and corporate capitalism, and which derives most of its viewing pleasure from fascistic simplicity, extraordinary beauty in its cast, and a corporate capitalist creation.
The film has two screenwriters, which perhaps explains its mixed messaging. There are some comments criticizing a simplified view of the patriarchy (pointing out you can’t get a CEO job without an MBA, irregardless of gender, for example), but ultimately it asks us to buy into a simplified view of the patriarchy, strangely punctuated by an extradiegetic image gallery of Sylvester Stallone for some reason.
It also briefly criticizes a divide of the sexes, with sympathy towards the solely subservient Ken, in parts, but ultimately ends on a triumphant division of the sexes with women writing the constitution.
In keeping with modern culture, all men in the movie are hopeless buffoons, and all women are innately wonderful. They seem to be mocking this idea at the start, with women winning Noble prizes seemingly without doing any work, but end up reconfirming this culturally cliched trope.
The men become the clear villains, with a desperate need to impress themselves upon women, and to compete with each other to do so. Any attempts to please women, through such sinister means as singing, paying compliments and wishing to protect, are portrayed as worthy of derision, through a rigidly hateful lens.
The women are portrayed as the heroines. In the narrative, they ultimately rely on the promise of sex, manipulation, lies and cruelty as their tools, and these are presented as positive attributes and tactics.
It’s a film about a children’s doll, made by a self indulgent director, that will ultimately appeal to similarly miserable and unattractive middle aged women, who are invited to identify with a very attractive lead star who deserves to make a lot of money out of the conceit.

I can't remember a time I've ever seen women en-masse, all generations, going to the cinema. The clash of worlds at the cinema was special and fun, like a small cosplay convention at each theater around America last night and this whole weekend. Big contrast afterward of course, solemn crowds coming out of Oppe. I'm eager to hear your thoughts on Oppe and the contrast of feelings in one weekend between these two blockbusters, and society at large, and what contrasting thoughts and conversations arise in those people who see Both of these Films in one weekend.
