Actually Clive, I value the content of these videos far more than the quality of the sound and motion. Even the jumpy or sticking image doesn't detract from the interesting content. From watching your channel I have become happier with tinkering around and dismantling gadgets and I have even got a "spudger". I never knew such a tool existed but they are way better than a thumbnail. Recent tinkering has had me salvaging the hard drives from sky boxes and experimenting with the power supply circuit boards. Please keep up your excellent work.
One tool you might find useful is a small dovetail saw or gent's saw. They're made for wood, but they cut plastic really well, and I find it's often easier to saw something open rather than trying to break it with the vice or pliers, &c.
Cadwaladr
If a plastic case isn't glued or sonically welded too strongly it's actually easier and less destructive to use reasonable force to flex the seam sufficiently to cause it to pop open. Often this results in a clean break along the existing seam and the possibility of glueing it back together afterwards with little, or no, signs of entry.
As is always the case, I was in a B+M yesterday evening looking for those seed fatball things to pop in my bird feeders. Couldn't find them, and discretion prevented me from asking an assistant if she had fatballs. Time was against me so I didn't wander the gadget section with the usual thoroughness.
bren106 Fat balls 😂😂
Shame the assistant wasn't male, as the comedy factor could have been much higher!
Most of them in that store would remind you of a female Russian Olympic shot putter, so there may well have been a surprise down there. I wouldn't be the man brave enough to check though.
I appreciate you taking the time to post while you are away from IoM. Perhaps keep a camera and mic set up stored in glasgow with your stash of tools for the job. Always appreciate your videos.
Regarding your comments on "jumpy videos of late"... I haven't really any complaints on the video quality, but lately a lot of your videos, the audio has been rather diffuse and unusual. Fortunately, the content is still top-notch.
Notice how the packaging refers to COB like it's a totally new technology? Is just calling it a LED light not as marketable nowadays?
NiHaoMike
I suspect they're trying to differentiate between multiple standard LED's and the COB LED that the unit uses, as only very cheap spotlights typically use standard LED's nowadays.
I grabbed a load of these (well about 8), swapped the batteries and protection circuitry and they are great lights for Scout camps. Throw in a 30W solar panel and its a great camp lighting system.
Could those be considered an MRI or CAT Scan? Or perhaps the "pliers of inquisition"?
Wholly Mindless Nobody expects the pliers of inquisition!
Wholly Mindless
Considering the simplicity of Clive's X-ray, I don't think these pipe grips could be seen as more sophisticated (as in MRI or CT Scanner) so perhaps they should be seen as an ultrasound (sonogram) or just a dental X-ray instead? As a temporary device I doubt they warrant a proper name such as with the Vise of Knowledge.
Their chief weapons are grabbing, cutting, the occasional blood blister and almost fanatical devotion to taking things apart.
Pipe grips of destructive curiosity
@@goose300183 The pliers of perception ?
As you say Clive, worth £5 for that pair of psu alone, plus you get a nice free lamp housing, resistor and lithium cell ! Run time as is would only be 2 hrs or so, which is a bit mean. I prefer less concentrated led arrays than COBs personally - they are so intense if you happen to look directly at them, compared to a large array of lower power leds. COB arrays probably cheaper per watt these days ?
OOooh! - Another work-light tear-down! - Go Clive go Clive! - The Spanish inquisition lamp!
Hi Clive, very nice teardown on the light, I learned a lot from it. If you're saving your video to an SD Card, I would recommend that you run a trim on it from time to time to ensure that you're not running into fragmentation causing slowdowns in writing to it. You might also look into running a trim on the internal flash of the Moto-G. Just my two cents.
Good timing on the video. I bought two of those 10W LED work lamps you showed a couple years ago and have been considering replacing the LED to something that's actually 10W and doesn't have a green tint to it.
Hi Clive, another great video. Much better viewing than anything on T.V these days!
I have a Moto G4+ and it was a pile of junk until I installed a custom ROM (LineageOS in my case). Now it works well.
These look good, what sort of runtime will you get though? that battery doesn't look very big.
Thanks again Clive for another interesting video, your videos are always worth a watch mate.
The charger seems to be the only thing that regulate the current? Does the cell have protection on it? Also the light using a common barrel jack and the cell might blow up if someone put a higher voltage into it because 4.2v is not a common voltage for the barrel jack
yep you got it
Best NOT get your chargers mixed up then!
Great video Clive, maybe when your back home you could give this light a makeover and boost it up with more power and a cell upgrade.
I did my first smd repair yesterday. Well chuffed I have a working key fob. No more standing in the rain trying to unlock my car. :)
Simon Hopkins Congrats! Im pretty new to electronics and smd scares me becouse i don't have steady hands :(
Zapiekanka Z Serem
same but it was already broken so had nothing to lose ;- )
Simon Hopkins
Wow! You have a key fob that causes it to rain? Perhaps you should contact DEFRA! 😜
Pete Allum 😂pmsl
Pete Allun. Brilliant :D
I am missing the schematics you used to draw on this channel where you reverse engineered a product, and the nice explanation we received to understand how it works. It would be nice if you could find some time and interest in doing that again.
A small ball and peen hammer is very good for breaking an ultrasonic seal. Tapping it all the way around and holding one corner to the floor and hitting the diagonal corner, the corner on the floor will open fairly easily, then just turn as you go. You want to shock the plastic but obviously not knock any smd components off
Any concerns about the battery terminals being wired directly to the barrel jack?
Unless labelled otherwise, I'd have expected it to take a 5V or 12V input.
I work as a web developer and have turned my old Nexus 6p into a dedicated video camera for our shop. We shoot a lot of video for the site on it now. Does 4k rather well and is built like a brick. Rooted and bone stock Android direct from Google. Not sure how easy they are to find new or reasonably refurbished but I would definitely recommend.
I second this. I've used both Nexus 5 and Nexus 5x devices. I mine rooted with LineageOS, because I like to live dangerously. Very easy to root -- the bootloader will just give you root access if you ask nicely. And LineageOS support should still continue even after Google drops support!
Even the first gen Pixel is heavily discounted if you buy it refurbished
@fersunk
We're talking about buying one for the office for dev work and I'm very interested in trying the camera.
Hey Clive, you could maybe find something to put in your work surface to mark the edges of the camera shot...something adjustable, maybe just a couple of cross shapes, nothing that you could confuse with what you usually work on.
You needed your Stanley X-Ray machine too. thanks Clive
Thanks for heads up Clive. Got one tonight ;)
I got two. :-) They're pretty good, quite bright.
Nice video, are you using the Motorola phone with motomods? Or just integrated camera? Your iPad did a better job since it didn't freeze and such.
I picked up a couple yesterday, they fantastic, out in my workshop last night, they chucked out plenty of light. Just got to work out a way to charge them up via a usb connection
Before zooming i have not noticed lags.
May the zooming is the Problem?
Hey Clive, have you ever considered maybe using a bit of electrical tape (or any tape for that matter) to mark out the area when you're zoomed in. Wouldn't have to worry as much about getting out of frame.
Maplins had them as well, but not sure how much they were. I was that close (thumb & index finger 2mm apart) to buying one.
I've been using a Nikon D5300. Awesome camera with a solid pricepoint.
Thanks for the video Clive. I wasn't bothered by the stuttering. My Moto gets hot too. I do put it in airplane mode and wifi off when recording videos.
Nuts n Proud Everything electrical has been getting mega hot during this UK heatwave, even equipment that doesn't normally get very warm!
Recent videos have mostly had picture stuttering problems I'm afraid. However I wonder if it might be simply because UK temperatures have been so high in the past month or so, causing the camera to get that much hotter to dissipate the same heat?
Fair point. However, my G4 has been doing its hot plate impression since around April, round about the same time the new G6 was being rolled out in the UK. I would suggest anyone thinking about buying a Motorola might bear this in mind. However, which competing manufacturer designs and supports mobile devices to last more than a couple of years?
Yes, just spotted that the above video starts stuttering at 7:22, and temperatures have dropped to near normal at the moment, especially up in Glasgow.
Paul Grimshaw
Clive records his videos about a week before they air on UA-cam as he allows Patreons access roughly a week early.
Clive, have you thought about some markings on the table/bench (maybe on the Isle of Man, not especially where you recorded this) that show you different zoom factors (with black lines or something) so you can always stay in shot while zoomed in?
IdleGandalf he has a black dot in center of the picture at his home bench..
True, I would still go the extra step, since most of the time he has 'problems' with the boundaries when zommed in.
IdleGandalf the real problem is that he forgets that he has zoomed in. So a square would't help.
Maybe the borders would help him there as well, but I know what you mean. If he is completly lost that won't help either :D
Hi Mister, could you please tell us something of the water heater linked below?
What was a bridge derectafier again??
Anyone notice the sound issue? I notice clives voice fades to near silent everytime there is a louder noise i.e a bang or a click. Can be annoying at times. Could it be an auto volume leveling setting?
Sadly I don't think are stocked in my local - seems a decent set of PSUs (I spy that the car charger is labeled USB on the PCB). Did you figure out the battery capacity? Is the light circuit really that simple? (battery, switch, LED & resistor?)
“Don’t turn it on... take it apart!” Dave Jones - EEVBlog! Seems to be the bigclive way as well. 😄
Your videos are good, only once did a problem show up.
Hey Clive, almost missed this video cos it didn't show up in my sub feed... did you do a Linus techtips and untick the push to feed button?
Too bad about the camera. Beautiful picture when working properly.
We all have your fingerprints now, it's that clear. Good sound too.
Went to B&M in redruth none on the shelves, great tear down though 👍
i recall a wile back you stared some big clive teaches electronics videos. how come that fizzled out they where pretty good
Good video, pity about your camera issues, try the Honor 9 lite - pin sharp video!
Clive,, you make light of the electronics. ..
Keep it up... tnx 🤓
Nice little smartphone you’ve got here. It would be a shame if it just stopped wor-
Ah, the Pipe Grips of Comprehension - cousin to the Vice of Knowledge and with many more uses.
Now we are just missing the Dremel of Ultimate Truth.
Or the Dremel of Enlightment :)
The Dremmel of Unending Squealing!
How warm does the reflector get during long term use?
Looks like there is room for about 4 more of those 2000mA cells under it :D
When it comes to jumpy audio I think it's because of AGC (Automatic Gain Control) in your camera, try to set it to static, and then It won't lower the volume when something cracks loudly
Clive, remember my offer re Battlefield Rest. Looks like AvE is a big fan of yours - AWESOME. Joe.
The sticky goo in the case is ment to trap little bugs, spiders so they wont short out something on that charger. Not that it has any openings,or mabe it has venting I didnt see. At least thats what I would do in an electronic application. How many times have I opened electronics and found skeletons of dead spiders and other bugs. At least by adding a sticky substance in one spot, they would get stuck in that one spot. I know of a person that had a bug kill his stand up computer. You wouldnt think it would happen, but crap does happen.
Great video! Seems a shame to waste a Watt in the resistor...
I don't know if it's the white balance of the camera but that light being blue would make it rather unpleasant to use. I've worked in home renovation and we used worklights to check the smoothness of walls prior to painting. This lamp would prove not very useful in that setting.
Hey, not sure if anyone mentioned this, but are you writing videos on SD card? Not sure about your setup, but maybe try a different (new and a better one) - these stutters kinda remind me of IO issues. It can be the new firmware, sure, but it's like something can't keep up and SD card is the first thing to suspect as they can deteriorate with use.
Shawlands. damn! I fancied one of those.
I can't say for sure if it's your particular phone. I have three Android devices that will sit all day connected to WiFi and not being used, and all the sudden when I decide to do something with them, THAT'S when they choose to do a multi-app update.
I think fluorescent tubes making bands on video has to do with the CMOS sensor. None of my CCD/3CCD cameras have that issue because they don't have a rolling refresh and any of the CMOS cameras I've tested (including the Xperia XZ Premium and the LG V20) can have it avoided if the shutter is set modestly fast (optimal speed varies between camcorders and phones and getting control of shutter speed on the Xperia requires a third party app). I think the G4 avoids said banding just by accidentally having a small aperture (that will circumvent the problem as well).
Great work mate I would love it if u could review one of those diy Tomo Powerbank where u can mix and charge and use any kind of 18650 and it claims it's isolated . pls review one of those it seems interesting and guys pls like this is u guys think he should review one of those.
Yesterday I got the last one that was on the shelf in my local store 😁. Shame there was only one left, I would have liked to have bought two...
Clive, A suggestion for you. You could " open " or Root the phone by means of software - mostly free BTW. Revert backwards by a few updates, and there you go. Problem solved with no outlay of funds. Functionality restored. Or not. I presume that you
really do not give a poop about the device. Just thought i would mention an alternative.....
Normally when you say the video's stuttering I can't notice any difference and was assuming it was just the phone's screen having some throughput issues, but today it was really pronounced in the uploaded video as well. It's crazy, I have some ancient digital cameras and MP3 players that are still going as well as they did when new but phones for some reason just can't handle entropy.
Entropy just ain't what it used to be . . .
Warning, maybe it isn't decisively stopping the charge, just turning off the LED at a set threshold current through the sense resistor.
Just a hunch; maybe it helps when you turn off the phone's radios (air plane mode) while recording, so none of the background apps & services "phone home" and thus allocate processing resources.
what power supply do you use
Look on eBay for a OnePlus 3T. It's the phone I'm using and you can get them used for about £200. Recently OnePlus said they're going to support it for another year of major updates and another 2 for security updates.
In regards to the Moto G4, have you done a "cache wipe" on it? It requires several steps including rebooting it into recovery mode, but it's all easily googleable and so long as you JUST perform the cache wipe, that should help considerably!
Cache wipe and full factory reset didn't fix the issue.
I found that Skype was playing up on my phone and slowing it down. Try using a process manager to see whether something is eating up a core, which will lead to all kinds of issues like this. The CPU is after all not designed to run full blast all the time.
I've got one of these, Used as a work and photography; Aucally love it
Vise of knowledge!
'The Vice of Knowledge' is on IoM but how about the knowledge of vice?
Damn I just went down and none left. I think you started a stampede for these
My Moto G4 has been suffering from the ghost touches problem very badly recently which is a shame because it is an otherwise excellent phone. It seems to be heat and bright sunlight that triggers it.
Hey Clive. We need more work light stuff. Im currently in the market for.something bright and can handle mud and washing with a hose.
having seen you just open the charger could you tell me what the model number of the charger is please?
It's specific to the product.
The jerky camera has been plaguing recent videos for sure.
Speculations -
1. Moto G is flaky
2. Big Clive is using the jump cut technique a la This Old Tony
3. ToT uses a Moto G
Say, you can get a J3 V6 from Samsung, nice 720p recording and nice 1440p-ish images.
I know where I'm going later this fine Sunday morning....
Would you be able to reflash the phone with a copy of the old ROM, or maybe a custom ROM? Seems a shame that the latest update killed it.
Just put LineageOS on an old tablet (Nook HD+), feels like a completely different device.
Seems like it's time for a Moto teardown. Get something to film it with first though!
🎥📽🎬
Old school 16mm?
Why destroy something for a software problem? Stick LineageOS on it and be done with it
On the price reduction from £15 to a 5 spot... did you know Screw Fix will sell you an excellent little rechargeable work light for £20. Comes with all the gubbins, plus the stand doubles as a mount for fixing it to a tripod (screw and butterfly nut supplied). Not sure what the rating is but they're really good, bright and a charge lasts a good long time. So maybe these ones just weren't selling a £15, although the cynic in me says they knock these things out at a high price, then after a few weeks, they drop the price to make them look more like a bargain... I mean, for a fiver I'd buy one, at £15, I'd pay the extra fiver for the all metal Screw Fix job.
I was gonna send you one of those tiny meters to take to bits, but I see you already have one...
*heads off to B&M*
How does charging the lithium cell work? Does the power supply do the regulation required to not let this burst into flames, or does the cell itself have some BMS built in?
I have one of these, and there is something inside the heatshrink of the battery. It might only be a ptc, though.
Great video
Hells yeah...I'd give 5 pounds for just the chargers as well!
For the Moto G4...
Roll back the update...or re-flash to an earlier version...to get back to a workable unit.
I had to take my Nexus 7 back to v6.0.1 due to some issues with an update.
How long will it for run on a full charge? Maybe test the none dismantled one ;)
BIG COIL on the 12-24v car charger what for dealing with the nasty, noisy power that comes out of that hellish 12v socket.
Used a cheapo old voltimeter (yes, the one with the needle) to poke on the 12v lighter hole thing of my econobox and the damn thing looked like a pendulum clock with the engine running!
AVE has been bigging you up in his latest video....👍
Have you tried to restore the phone or clean up storage?
Hi Clive,
For the recording, have you considered any of the Cat smartphones? They made some noise around the S61 now, but the S60 seems to be a decent phone already. A bit expensive, shall we say, but should last...
Cheers
I have been looking at that range and made a short test video with an S60 which seems OK.
That battery charging circuit looks pretty shoddy unless the wall/car charger is doing some type of monitoring. Wouldn't trust that.
Hi Clive! Where is the EverReady cob light made? EverReady is a very storied brand in the US.
BobEckert56 Note these are EVEREADY & NOT EVER READY Which was the original British company name, back when all their batteries and torches etc were manufactured in Britain, it is now probably just a name used under licence to badge generic Chinese made products.
B & M in the UK, their stores sell a whole range of EVEREADY branded products.
Yes its just a brandname thats licensed 'borrowed' and put on lots of cheaply made products ....the same with Polaroid .... Its very misleading but totally legal .
mark layton Well, apparently, your conclusion doesn't hold true for this cob light. Clive seemed to give it his full approval.
BobEckert56 It's B.M Khaitan, eveready used to be Union Carbide in India then the mishap happened now they make batteries, lamps, flood lights etc. It's a subsidiary of B.M Khaitan.
Siddharth Ghosh So, what country made this apparently fine product?
nice!!!
Are you in Edinburgh for the tattoo?
All those in favour of Crowd funding Clive a new dedicated vlogging Camera and Microphone :)
Seabrezze Coffee Roasters+ It’s easy just become a Big Clive Patreon and get your videos a week earlier.
what voltage charger do you need for this as I have lost mine. :(
It's a specific charger because it has to limit the current. 4.2V 1000mA. You may also have got a car charger with it.
Hey Clive! I was on your website to see if I could buy some of your goods. However it’s says you’re on vacation. Is that going to be a while? Really interested in some of your projects. Just purchased a 898D+ soldering station.
I own a very well looked after Moto G4 and it's been getting hot enough to work as a ration heater for the last few months. I've managed to identify no rogue apps. Lenovo's way of letting its user base know that it's time to buy the newly introduced G6?
got the last 3 from the Walkden shop. at the reduced price .l have toured round a lot of greater manchester B&Ms , think the're maybe at the end of their stock......get one if you see them , for 5 quid , they are , as Clive says a bargain just for the power adapters alone
Coming away disappointed at the lack of a CliveCAD schematic...
What happened to the code of knowledge?
