Great looking barrel pond. I have a couple myself and they really add something to a garden 🙂
Lovely! We just used your video to make one for ourselves. Thanks for the advice!
Going to do this with an old barrel I've got. Thanks for the very easy "how to guide"!! 👍😁😁
Trick to your buckets I learned working in restaurants run hot water only over outside bucket while slowly pulling on one and pushing on bottom bucket shortly it will twist a little than they will come apart but the plastic can't be out in Sun first will have to be room temp first or colder works almost every time so far
Hiya love this idea, and great for if you don't have slot of space. The sound of trickling water is so relaxing. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thats lovely, thats what im gonna do. Thanks for sharing. Mate!!!
Nice set up, but I question the protection. Not confident that a small clay pot will be enough to keep your fish safe. But, time will tell. I’d suggest a net to cover the top. Best of luck with it all.
Yeah! Duckweed watch. I love it.
Ted Coletti’s book, The Tub Pond Handbook, covers all these exact same tips and topics in great detail.
I didn't know undergravel filters could still be bought. Where did you get yours? Using pond liner is an excellent idea. It's safe for just about any tub or container without worrying about toxic chemicals leaching into the water.
Looks good! I set up a barrel pond last year which I made an awesome filter housing for at pottery class, but it's all gross with algae now, must sort that out. I think overwinter, fish survive if the water is 3ft deep or more.
I was wandering if solar powered air pumps existed. Thanks for your help. All the best.
Sweet, similar to what I've done with my pond, solar fountain that I've put in a pond plant pot lined with sponge to act as a filter of sorts. Added my first fish today in the shape of 3 red comets.
Nice - I'm thinking a little group of white clouds or something to add to this one.
My pond is 5 x 3 feet and 2 foot deep, more than big enough for 3 comets.
@@sharpiesfishandphantoms I apologise, for some reason I thought you meant same size as the barrel!
How long did you manage to keep the fish alive? I’d really like to do it with my half whisky barrels.
HAPPY Father's Day weekend boss from Houston TX USA 😎😎😎
Your little fish would appreciate an oxygenator plant in there too I think. Nice set up though. I love your stone bench next to the pond.
ROFLMFAO at "1000 gallons if you're Canadian" comment. Wicked!
It’s been a month. We deserve another video 😊
Hi ,I really enjoyed watching this video . I have a little pond with 6 young goldfish and no filter system . I have 2 air stones that run off solar.
Please could you explain in a bit more detail how you made your filter and also where could I buy one from. Thank you very much. 🙂
I have moved house and built a new pond - this video talks a little about ideas for solar powered filtration - ua-cam.com/video/EeQRCefDI9o/v-deo.html
Hi - how has solar powered worked since as I'm about to buy the half barrel and just starting the journey! I live in Yorkshire - also did you do anything extra over winter please?
Very good, lovely garden
Well done, great idea!
I am currently setting up a pond is this filter good? And what is the name of it i have looking for solar filters and cant find any. Great video and very helpful
How do you care for it in the winter?
How about when it rains will the water level not get too high? I’m thinking of doing this thanks.
Such a helpful video, ive got a half whiskey barrel so the advice was great, which pump did you get as the one I've got does store energy?
In the end I switched to an air pump as I was able to run a line from my fish room (update here - ua-cam.com/video/1mh-bpfcKXQ/v-deo.html) but if you find a pump that stores energy that works that should be great too 👍
I am going to make one but not using a filter or pump, just oxygenated plants, a solar floating fountain on top, I will take out a bucket of water a month and replace with a bucket of water with the right measure of De- chlorinate, I am going to line inside with hessian carpet make shelves with bricks , then line the whole thing, just 3 normal hardy goldfish, 1 for each grand kid, do you think this will work? I was thinking of getting a hoover for cleaning the bottom once a month on the 1 bucket water change. I also got a spare metal barrel band which I shall put chicken wire over with 3 hooks to take on and off the lid to protect from birds and cats, what is your opinion please before I start?
Sounds good - might want to rethink the goldfish depending on the size of the barrel you use (even one is a bit of a stretch in mine) but otherwise sounds like you have everything covered 👍
2 questions:did the solar pump work all summer , and are you going to update this project?
I did something similar recently and tried adding some guppies (unfortunately they jumped out, r.i.p😱 ) will a "waterfall" effect using that same sized tube work to aerate? Also have four water lillie's and other pond plants.
Great pond. Is the bottom filter the only one you need in order to put fish in a similar pond?
Would plants survive through the winter? I am in Canada and it gets really 😢cold here.
I have a waterlily that overwinters on my patio in a 100gallon stock tub on Vancouver Island. It has about6 inches of plain kitty litter with a gravel cap as substrate. It ices over with a thin layer for a couple weeks per year, and the goldfish just survived their first winter. I used to put guppies in for the summer, and put them inside for winter. Last year I changed to goldfish. The other plant I leave in year round is a spearmint in a basket with leca clay balls, hanging from the side of the tub. Can't kill mint, and this might keep it from taking over the garden.
I need help! I have made a massive rooky error! I used an old whiskry barrel for my pond and filled it with plants and lillys and didnt line it! A week later my plants are all dying! I think this is due to harmful chemicals in the wood, I have removed them now, is there anything I can do to help them recover?
Awesome! Great project, did red head survive the winter? Wasn’t too bad
I took him in for the winter, then lost him to a case of dropsy unfortunately
Why not line it with a flexible bituman waterfroof membrane.? Its fish safe and much nicer
Oh, can you tell the proper name for that bottom mounted fountain or a link. Thank you 🥰
Ps. Amazing pond! Hope it still runs
Lovely
How many litres or gallons is that
Great video 👍🏻 how’s it looking now?
Will post an update soon - spoiler, it's looking like it needs to be cleaned!!
Now your mum wants one!
From a Canadian...that is definitely NOT 1000 gallons lol we are also on metric system 😉
great to see another Scots fish guy with a Sheffield connection. About to do this very thing. Sio helpful. What i will do is get another panel to cgarge tbe battery. my current water pump kicks out 12 volts. i will also add another lily to give more cover and stick in sone elodea densa geeat idea about the undergravel!! thanjs from joh masterton. fb me if you like.
I gave up in the end with the solar power - but didn't try an extra panel, thats probably a good idea. Now I just run it off a spur from my fish room air pump which was a bit of a faff running the airline, but works well!
Sir I have problems to my discus hole in head Sir what is the problem
If you soak an old barrel the wood inflates and becomes watertight. No need for a liner.
How do you soak a barrel if it isn't watertight? Also, you might not want whatever was in the barrel leeching into the water.
@@AquariumAdventures homeguides.sfgate.com/waterproof-whiskey-barrel-80397.html I did similar to what you did in Chicago with a mini aquaponics system. It thrived, it was the brutal winter that killed my fish
This barrel had half inch wide gaps all over - it wouldn't hold water at all. A years worth of rain has just started to close them up now
another video! pleeeeeease
Technically if you home is solar powered then everything you have is solar powered lol
Is this big enough for fish? Yeah, I know that technically you can put fish in even the tiniest of bowls (awful!), but I'm thinking of the welfare of the animals here. How far would they naturally swim in the wild and how does this compare? Are they a sedentary species and only naturally venture a couple of feet from their habitat or would they naturally want to go further than that? If the latter then pleased don't have fish in such tiny spaces.
Hope there is no racoons or such in the neighborhood . He will think it's dinner!
We have a family of foxes, and a few domestic cats - so far none of them have shown any interest. Kids however haven't had their hands out of the thing though!
2 fish not 1
In
why do you guys act like americans are the only people on earth???
You've ensired me thank you so much
