    I learned the hard way many years ago that it's better to position a steering wheel lock so the sticky out end is jammed in a gap where it's hard to move, like in the corner between the A pillar and windscreen. If it's pointing into the vehicle then you're just providing them with a free lever to break the steering lock with.

    You can also pass the seat belts through the door grips, click them in and tighten them

    An additional feature that I use when leaving the van is to swivel the drivers seat round to face inside the van then pad lock it in that position.

      Good idea, we tend to leave them with the chair back to the door as standard but not for security - it is now 😁🥳

    Not an intrusion/theft tip, but something we learned at an RV seminar. Besides clothes, keep a “ditch out” bag, usually near the door, in case you suddenly have to abandon the rig (such as a fire). Ditch out bag has important papers, medicines, wallets (cash, credit cards), etc., for people and pets.

      @@xvsupremacy7190 Which version of unthinkable? The van can’t move or if something happens to us? We’ve tried to make sure we’d know where to start with most eventualities by making sure we have the right insurances and cover.

    Sound advice. We have been motorhoming for 20 yrs and still make fundamental mistakes. At night we have a set security routine but whilst in the Czech Rep a few years ago we got distracted for some reason and went to bed without locking the habitation door. And of course that was the one night when our security was breached. We were burgled whilst we were in our bed. I felt the van move a little. so I got up to check and found my wallet had gone. I jumped out of the van but they had gone but I found my wallet on the ground, money had gone but my cards were still there...Phew! Needless to say we spend a few minutes at night to make sure we're fully secure and then double check it!!!.

  • @matauboy
    @matauboy 2 роки тому

    Something that was pointed out to me by a security specialist. People do a lot to keep their environment secure but very little preparation for if that security is ever breached. I think this would be even more important for you guys as you are constantly changing countries.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a good point.. we have theoretical things that we would try if someone did get inside while we were in the van.. we’d have to see how those worked in real life which I’m happy to wait to test out 😂

    In my (daydream) planning, it seemed to me that external cameras set up as you have would be a must have, so was delighted to see it is not such a daydream after all! Mandy, I agree though, as much as anything security can be our state of mind (allowing for commonsense). Even parked on one's own driveway could be nerve-wracking if we are inclined to feel insecure. In fact, I have a pal who is borderline paranoid about burglers in her sticks and bricks and makes life pretty miserable for herself. One would never travel at all if this was all that were to be thought about! ... as for the weather... don't even... YAM xx

    Hi
    Have you ever thought of the Ducati anti theft cover plates for the front cab doors? There have been instances where the thief has used and electric drill and screwdriver to gain access. If you were away from the van, you may be too far away to prevent entry and a theft occurring. You know they will make a real mess of the van looking for items, even if they don’t find them? Of course we all know that the van has plastic windows and if they want to get in they will! Keep safe.

      We’ve covered this in an earlier comment, a brick beats any door lock device, so it’s just not worth it. They’ll gain entry in any way they can, so that’s why we use the tips & devices we talk about in this video.

    Hi John and Mandy - new to your channel and new to motorhoming. Helpful video. We had a Metatrak Non Starter immobilizer and alarm fitted by Van Bitz. Really like the Non Starter Immobilizer as once armed even if they have a key it will not start without an "instruction" from your phone.
    Any thoughts on fitting additional secure plates on Ducato door locks?

      As we said in the video it’s so easy to enter via smashing a window, the door locks wouldn’t stop that type of thief

      We also have the Vanbitz growler alarm and non starter immobilizer, great bit of kit!

    John on your Trackimo, I see it is a 3G device. As 3G is switched of over Europe as all is moving to 4G and 5G just check whether it will continue to work. In some countries 2G will be there until 2025 but it will also be phased out. Better save than sorry.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  2 роки тому

      The world still uses 2G let alone 3G, there are not plans to phase out 3G at all. We’ve found all networks are perfectly functional everywhere we have been.

    Just interested to know now that you've reached Turkey how many days did you use up while traveling through Europe and did you save some incase you needed to return home in an emergency? Also when you leave Turkey I'm taking it you will probably have the full 3 months available again.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  2 роки тому +1

      We used 63 days as we left Schengen when we entered Romania - we were planning to leave 10 days or so as we’d always want enough days to get back to the UK if needed. We’ll have full allocation once we leave Turkey 😁

    Thanks John and Mandy for another brilliant vid. I've just purchased the Netgear MR1 and want to power this up all the time, should I leave the battery in or take it out? What's best?
    Thanks Mick

      @@johnmandy Just got my Netgear M1 very pleased with it. Page 22 of the manual says this below.
      Use the Mobile Router as a Fixed Mobile Router
      If you use the mobile router as a fixed mobile router, we recommend that you remove the battery and use
      a quick charge power adapter. The mobile router supports Quick Charge 2.0 technology

      If you leave the battery in the software will keep the battery healthy by allowing the battery to drop to 20% and then charging up again and so on, which is why i left the battery in and why my advice stands as it works perfectly for us. Plus if your 12v system fails, or blows a fuse, then by having the battery in you're always going to have a signal, whereas if you decide to remove the battery then you could be offline.
      The way I do things works for us, but you feel free to do something different if you feel you need to do so.

    And the baseball bat is kept....lol ...only joking guys, don't have a van yet but when I do I'll be looking into some of those security features, hope you make your 40k subs.

      The steering wheel lock is our baseball bat, this way there’s no chance of use being quizzed about having a steering lock 👍🏻😁

    Deadlocks on the front doors is the most important cheap thing to invest in. The front doors are the easiest way to enter a locked VAN.
