Fall Break 2024 Road Trip!
Oct. 17th-20th, Day 2, Part 1 of 2
We have been wanting to ride the historic steam engine train ride up the scenic Animas Canyon from Durango to Silverton for decades. We finally crossed this trip off our bucket lists! WOW, was it amazing. When I booked the trip all that was available for seating reservations was the roundtrip ticket in the open air train car. Rain and snowy weather was in the forecast so
we planned ahead and dressed for the conditions. The seating is assigned so the roundtrip adventure turned out to be amazing. The train literally turned around at Silverton, so what we did not get to see on the way up, we were able to see on the way down. It was a success! The scenery and the ride was amazingly breathtaking and beautiful!
Enjoy!
Music used in the video
None, just the sounds of train whistles blowing!

The sound of that engines whistle is so exciting. We have often wanted to ride the train but have always ended up staying in Silverton instead of Durango. We just love being in Silverton as the trains arrive in the morning. The sounds of the whistles and bells echo up the valley announcing the approach of the trains. Really magical. We have visited Silverton five times, an indication of how much we like it here. Last time though I was finding the Million Dollar Road a bit more fearsome than in the past so next time (hopefully) it will be the train. It really looks a great ride. We would choose the open carriage too. Amazing to see this journey with you. That rocky shelf on the mountainside was incredible. It really looks a wonderful ride. Shame that the walk around Silverton was so sleety it feels very different when the sun shines and you see the mountains all around. We like the town at night when all the trains have taken everyone back to Durango. It is so quiet and atmospheric. Last time here our first choice restaurant was closed in the evening (they had a great day and so closed early), so we ate at a Mexican place along the road. At breakfast the following morning I asked about the early closure and was told about their busy day that persuaded the early closure. They said though we were OK as they knew we had dined at the Mexican place. Obviously not many overnight tourists in town! Best wishes to you both. See you again soon.
Thanks for the awesome comment and sharing your memories of your visits. Even with the weather we had an amazing time on the round trip ride from Durango. Next time we hope to drive the Million Dollar Highway. This time the storms made it way too treacherous for us to want to take it home. We would surely do the round trip train ride again. It was our first time and it surely exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend the round trip ride in the open air car for sure. I hope you have an amazing return to this wonderful area. Take care and have a Happy New Year!
Nice wake up call. The Durango-Silverton train looks like such a unique adventure, especially braving the open-air car in chilly, rainy weather. Those narrow passages at 7:01 had me holding my breath, so close to the cliff walls! Wow, that gorge at 7:15 looks stunning! Such a dramatic view! And arriving in Silverton with its dirt roads and historic buildings was like entering a snow globe. On this site in 1897, nothing happened... Silverton’s sense of humor is on point! 🤣
Thanks. This was such a fun experience. Glad we were finally able to come. The open air car is the way to go. On this trip the indoor cars all had steamy windows that you could not see out of. Dress for the elements and go outdoor for sure. It is amazing especially those cliffy sections. The way back we got the front row gorge side view. Crazy that they can even make a route through these areas. Impressive canyon. Funny stuff on the town humor. Even though nothing happened there in 1897 we will surely be back. Amazing trip worth doing again. Maybe in some other seasons of the year. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
That was awsome to watch. What a cool old train and What an amazing trip. 😊😊😊

We did this train ride last summer. It was a blast! We're so glad you and Kristy could go. Interesting to go during a thunderstorm. Heck yeah indeed! ❤ We were in an open air gondola, too. That's the way to go! 😊 Awesome views! We just went to Cascade Canyon and back and didn't stop in Silverton. Thanks for sharing, friends! Looked like a brisk ride! ❄️🥶
Thanks. That is awesome you were able to ride it too. It is such a cool ride and experience. Our original try at riding this in the Spring was going to Cascade Canyon but we decided to reschedule. It is so awesome to do the entire round trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.

Our 4 year old grandson id steam train daft, he loves them and he sure would a enjoy a trip on that train. Just as well you had plenty of warm gear with you and thank goodness it did not rain.......trust me to mention rain! The views through the canyon were stunning mind and no wonder he was taking his time and wow, snow too, looks like you were getting all the seasons in one. Nice to look around town but that one hour stop over must have been a dam cold one - a hot coffee was a must. Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan. That is awesome to get the little guys on these trains. These historical steam train are impressive to be able to ride. The views along this route are beautiful too. The fresh snow added to the fall colors and the views too. The outdoor train car is the best seat on the train. Bundle up and enjoy the ride. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.

Thanks Bruce. This was an awesome ride. Glad we were finally able to go. We have been waiting a long time. Those drop offs are certainly a bit sketchy. It was a great trip with great scenery. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Wow! This looks awesome! What a way to see the area! The foggy trek seemed to make it that much more magical!!
Thanks. This train ride is a must do. I hope you get to take the ride someday. Have a wonderful day.
That was a cool train and ride. Amazing how well they maintain it. Can’t believe you caught that lightning strike
Thanks Jason. I would go on this ride again and again. It was really awesome. Catching that lightning strike was pure luck. It was fun to see it in slow-mo too. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
That is an awesome area and train ride. Perfect time of year. Glad you shared this.
Thank you. This was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed watching it. I would definitely recommend this trip. Have a wonderful day.
Oh this will be fun to see. We talked about doing this once. Our timing was off and we didn’t get to. I would like to do this one day. For now I’ll just sit here and enjoy your experience. It’s a neat old train. Um yeah. I would want to go on a warmer day if I’m gonna be in that car. I’m anti cold 😆 It sure is pretty. Running along side that mountain is a bit freaky, though. Love seeing the rapids. The water is such a gorgeous color. I just love that area of Colorado. It’s so darn pretty. Haha everyone leaning out of the train when it’s stopped. Man I can’t get over the pretty scenery. I can’t wait for our Colorado vids to start coming out. We did some of the mountain trails there. Oh wow. Wasn’t expecting to see snow. Think snow in Colorado is prettier than snow anywhere else. Ha we may have actually seen that train when we was in silverton. Yup I love silverton. We camped for free a couple miles outside of town. But you’ll see all that when our vids come out. Hey I got coffee in that shop a couple times. This was such an awesome experience. Maybe next time we can do this. We’ll see.
Thanks. We have been wanting to do this for a long time and we finally made it happen. This is such a great trip. The outdoor car is the way to go for sure. The scenery was amazing and the ride was really fun. It was cool to be on the old steam train too. So enjoyable to hear the chugga chugg wooo wooo and whistle. Silverton was super cool with the historic buildings and the dirt roads. It was like we went back in time. We highly recommend doing this round trip ride. I'm sure we will be back to ride it again and again. We hope you make there too. Have a great day.
Super cool Tchoo tchoo ride! awesome views but looks cold hahaha! brrrrr I've been on many trains but not many without windows hahaha take care
Thanks Alex. This is such an awesome train and route. It was a bit chilly but that is what they make coats for! The open air train car was the best. We would do outside every time. I hope you get to ride this someday. That gorge and cliffy section is really awesome. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Fun train ride- that’s so amazing they keep the old steam engines working! You’re so brave to sit outside, good thing you had a blanket and warm clothes! Great views of the mountains and river along the way, and pretty to see the fresh snow. We visited Durango before, but it was in the spring, nice to see the late fall colors!! ❄❄🚂🚂
Thanks Jennifer. This old steam engine was awesome. We have been waiting a long time to ride it. It certainly exceeded out expectations. So worth going time an time again. The outdoor car is the way to go for sure. You just have to dress for the elements. The scenery was beautiful. Kristy was super happy that we still managed to get some fall colors on the trip too. We will surely ride again someday. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
@ We’ve been to that part of Colorado but didn’t take the steam train- we’ll have to check it out if we go back. Thanks!! 🚂🚂🚂
Nice video. Have a wonderful Sunday 😊
Thanks. It was an amazing ride with awesome scenery. Have a great day.
I always enjoy seeing Silverton! One of my favorite towns that holds many memories. That’s Smelter Mountain where you videoed that lightning strike. I’ve climbed it to the base of all three towers. It has quite the view of Durango from there. Looking forward to your return trip.✌️
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. It was pretty lucky to get that lightning strike. So cool to see it in slow motion. Cool that you have hiked up there before. I'll be the view was amazing. We will be back on this train ride again someday. It was so awesome. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
There were some beautiful views. Several shots of the train along the river were postcard quality. What a cool activity. I would love to ride a historic train in a beauty location like this. Until then, this video will have to do! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Dan. It was an amazing ride up a beautiful canyon. I hope you get to ride it someday. It was a really fun day with great scenery. We will definitely come back for another ride someday. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Rhonda and I had snow the first time we were in Silverton, too. This brought back some great memories. Well done, guys.
Thanks. I'm glad you and Rhonda were able to ride this train. It is such an amazing ride in a beautiful area. So awesome. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
Beautiful train, the visit between mountains and along the river is amazing, I don't know this place, thanks for sharing, have a nice day
Thank you. This is an awesome train and route up the mountain. It is so worth the adventure if you are in the area. I hope you get to ride it someday. Thanks for watching. Have a wonderful day.
It is a beautiful ride. Narrow gauge for a reason right.....lol. That was a great capture of the lightning strike.
Thanks Stacy. We loved this trip. The ride was so awesome and the scenery was beautiful. We will surely ride this again someday. Maybe in the summer when it is not freezing outside. LOL. The outdoor car is the way to go though. Best views on the train. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
Cool train ride! Man the lightning was awesome! On this site in 1897...nothin to see here folks,LOL! Take care my friend.
Thanks Jim. We have been waiting a long time to ride this train. Finally! It was amazing. More amazing than what happened in 1897! LOL. Thanks for watching. Hope all is well. Have a wonderful day.
Looks like a fun trip! Nice lightning capture! That gorge looked Squatchy! My Dad was a salesman and used to travel to Durango and Silverton and when it was his turn for custody, he would take me on his road trips for business over there. It’s been a long time since I’ve been over there. Silverton is a cool town! You and Kristy stay warm!
Thanks Christian. I got lucky on the lightning strike. So cool to see in slow motion. I was thinkin about how remote this area is and how it certainly could be squatchy for sure. I hope you make it down here to ride the train and do some backpacking too. Take care and have a great day.
Must be cold weather if Steve breaks out the pants!! 😂
Thanks. It was a bit chilly for sure. I had to blow the dust off those pants before I put them on. They had been sitting on the shelf way too long. LOL. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
