Yup. I bought some of my stuff at stores like, TJ Maxx, Ross, Burlington, Michaels and even WalMart! 😊very cheap. *Very effective*
If you dont want to be a walkin micro platics factory linen and wool are great alternatives to a fully synthetic outfit.

In Norway we use Wool instead of sports wear. Keeps you warm even if wet and does not stink
Don't forget to check the clearance rack if you need something, might find a great deal

Good tips! People don't need to go bankrupt to enjoy being outside.
Jeans are my first choice when backpacking. Mainly because it doesn’t smell when I’ve been wearing the same pair for a few days. The breathability can’t be beat either. However I generally do avoid the rain so I’ve never delt with trying to dry really wet jeans in the woods.
Silk under layer is great too

I like to wear cotton, cause when it gets wet, I use the clothes as weights to work out with.

What to wear backpacking: ankle socks and a loincloth. "Whaddaya mean I have to leave the forest?"
In my fourth grade we spent an entire quarter learning about outdoor etiquette survival techniques and how to safely camp in the winter. This was in Alaska and I think ink my teacher just wanted us to know this so we can stay safe. Also wool can hold 4x the amount of water cotton can (before it becomes noticeable) , and is a good choice for socks because it isn’t as combustible making it easier to dry by the fire
Lightly processed wool will maintain the lanolin. This will allow the wall to get wet, but still retain heat.
Also you can get great second-hand gear cheap at thrift stores with a little searching. For Xmas one year my sister got me a patagonia gore-tex rain shell and some snob-brand fleece sweaters. I love getting good quality stuff for free, don't need to go shopping for stuff that will last for years.

Wool also absorbs water and takes long to dry.
I wear cotton during the summer as I won't smell as much and I prefer it being wet for longer.

I could be wrong but those were Merrell Moab flight two or one, again correct me if I’m wrong. I love those shoes so much for backpacking and anything else, I used them for a twelve day backpacking trip at Philmont scout ranch and I’ve been using them all the time for my daily’s. The most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn!!

Things I constantly keep regretting to have bought are rain jackets. Very rarely is the environment appropriate for a classic rain jacket. Mostly, it just does all the wrong things.
Instead, ponchos or other jackets and try to hide. If you are in American wide prairies, obviously other rules apply. But for the average hiker, an exclusive rain coat is a no need.

Wool is for cold weather, not fall temps
Exactly, it's OK spending a little extra on quality items, but being practical with stuff you already have saves money.
Layering for the cold, rather than one big chunky item of clothes is always best.
I agree with the running-shoe recommendation. I had a big pair of fancy hiking boots until I realized I couldn't walk downstairs in them. I switched to running shoes over good wool socks, and realized I could run and jump again.
I now wear synthetic socks all the time because I can't afford wool. Cotton socks are blister generators and water wickers.
You might be able to find wool trousers in old-style suits. Modern suits have polyester and such, which is also good. Check the thrift stores.

ALL I HAVE IS COTTON! guess imma just go thrifting for a whole synthetic wardrobe so I can start hiking
What some people dont know, is that some cheap synthetic clothes actually asorb some of the oils our body produces, making less cleaning than that of cotton or alpaca wool. Cotton can be worn for multiple more days and be clean, while cheap synthetic needs to be washed after a single day of use.

I wear my old Air Force BDU field coat and it keeps me warm even in the coldest temperatures.
I gotta say that my Frogg Toggs rainsuit was one of the best $30.00 I ever spent in my life. It's 25 years old and out performs my North Face jacket hands down!

Frogg toggs repel water great but snag and tear easily going thru thick woods.

One thing to remember about synthetic clothing is it doesn't mix with fire at all.
Polyester is dry but stinks so much because it repels water but retains oils with odor compounds, microbes and shit. So even outdoors I can't reuse poly socks for 2 days. Whereas wool socks can be used for many days without stank because they're more anti bacterial and the crap doesn't stick to the fibers or something.
Too bad merino is expensive and fragile.
maybe clothes with a tiny bit of cotton and some tencell/lyocell is an ok compromise as they are cheap, durable, not that smelly, kinda dry
Careful around campfires, etc. Synthetic clothes can melt to your skin and possibly kill you. Wool stays warm, even when wet. And it won't melt or stick to you.
I typically wear a head to toe wool

Though tennis shoes are amazing for weight and comfort, don't forget about your ankles. Dealing with blisters, additional fatigue, and sweat is a lot better than dealing with a rolled/sprained ankle in my opinion. Discomfort is better than inhabilitation in extreme conditions. When it comes to shoe support, remember your ankles.
That is a bummer. I only use jeans.
thrift store are good too people dont wear those kind of clothes for fashion so they get rid of it easily

Outdoor gear in the UK is a kings Ransome,must a certain well known brand here Is actually now associated with young teenage boys making trouble ,won't name them but their names but North Grace people here avoided that brand now a fashion brand.
I stick with cotton and wool. Honestly can't go back to polyester. Cotton blends suck because they take the longest to dry unless they're quick dry. But they repel water better.

Denim aint so bad in the fall or early spring. Most times I have muk boots or 10 eyed boots and a parka style coat so not much is exposed to light rain. I have a poncho for torrential downpours 😄. I havent found a snag free 'rip stop' style nylon. I use BDU pants a lot. Fairly cheap on ebay.

Wool, and mixed wool clothes, even when wet they will keep you warm.
I've been backpacking 5 years... I've not worn underwear in 4 years and 8 months 😅 People get too obsessed with getting 'camping' gear. Don't overthink it, keep it simple.

Yeah but I don't like the FEEL of synthetic clothing, so as long as you keep your cotton stuff in a ziploc bag it's nicer to sleep in than synthetic (basically plastic) clothing.
Funny, used to backpack with all the wrong gear when I was a kid. Funny how it doesn't matter. Just get the gear that works for you. Especially if you're only going for a week/50 mi hike. Blue jeans and Sierra cup. Didn't need magic titanium cups and synthetic clothing. Dubble up socks and use wool.
If you don't have a raincoat, and are desiring to do even just an overnight backpacking trip. I'd suggest a decent poncho instead of a rain jacket. If it's going to rain, you'll already be wearing a tarp for a shelter.. Otherwise this is gold. Save more money!
Cotton is better then that synthetic garbage that will get torn up compared to a pair of denim jeans

Army surplus. My Austrian army goretex hard shell was £50 and the equivalent of a ~£300 mountaineering spec civilian jacket.

Sound advice
Yep - wear synthetics, the dry out much faster and lessen the risk of hyperthermia.
Just feel the difference in dampness when you pull spun clothes out of a washing machine before drying.
You can dry cotton easier by a fire then synthetic. I’d take cotton ever synthetic
@@ETsBees Cotton absorbs water, and tons of it, so it gets trapped in the fibers and takes a long time to dry. Sure, you can dry it by a fire, but depending on the item you basically *have* to dry it by a fire if you want to wear it again anytime soon. If for some reason you can't make a fire or you can but it's still raining on your clothes while you're trying to dry them, you are screwed.
A synthetic material like polyester is naturally hydrophobic and any water that penetrates it only gets trapped between the fibers, so it absorbs much less, weighs much less when it's wet and dries much faster than cotton even in the absence of a fire. Nylon is not hydrophobic and thus inferior to polyester, but is still markedly better than cotton.
Personally, I wear cotton on the trail all the time, but when it comes to dealing with moisture synthetic materials are vastly superior.

Down takes as long or longer than cotton to dry out...

Tell me material for synthetic, rain jacket, shoes, athletic clothes, hat, gloves and etc. All I found out was no cotton.
Polyester is the preferred choice as it's naturally hydrophobic. Nylon is not and will absorb water, even when treated, but is still a better choice than cotton. With that said, cotton is not a bad choice on the whole. Heavy weight cotton is a bad choice, but if you can find some very light cotton shorts and shirts, preferably ones with ventilation, go for it. They might not dry as fast, but they'll dry fast enough and they won't weigh a ton while they're wet.
Don't like the idea of shedding micro fibers in pristine areas. I wear wool, linen and hemp. They dry fast and don't add as much pollution in their production and when I go camping.
