- The herd of aurochs in a former military area in Milovice, about 30 kilometers from Prague (the capital of the Czech Republic). A huge bull, several cows and a group of calves inhabit worldwide unique nature reserve of large herbivores, along with wild horses and european bisons. The project started in 2015. It is the first herd of backbreeding aurochs in Central and Eastern Europe. Backbreeding wild cattle come from the program of the Taurus Foundation from the Netherlands.

What I like the most is the tranquility of that place, the sound of the birds and the light fresh mist. Nice time and place to sit under one of those trees and drink hot black coffee and contemplate those horses, bulls, cows and calves.
Not exactly an Aurochs. It's not as muscular and they are more tame. I'd imagine these are are also a little shorter....but it's getting there. 👍
They would need to evolve in nature. Controlled breeding by humans won't completely resurrect the aurochs.
Where are these cattle today
I keep reading what these cattle are not. But what are they? There not Aurochs and they’re not the heck cattle. What are they then?
try also way to short as bulls are 6 feet at the shoulders
Give them a few years they will eventually turn into one
I'm sure with large predators around, they would physically start to evolve into a wilder, faster, stronger animal. Would argue it's even necessary if the goal is to re-wild.
Absolutely!
YES.....! .
Just add some Texas Longhorn genes to the mix and you’ll get some very feisty beasts!
@@dr.froghopper6711 Just a tad of Texas shorthorn too (Da dum tsk)
There are no large land-based predators anymore. The large predators of the aurocks time are all gone. Its also more likely that the animals would domesticate themselves natural due to the lack of viable habitat and the domestic gene already being present.
Judging from the old paintings/cave art, the horns aren't quite right. Still, it's getting there.
@CrappyKidForever Its a human thing. Don't try to understand you will only get a headack.
Probably look quite like bos indicus since in the cave art they had small hump.
@Shivam Joshi I was referring to its genetically closest relative. Bos Primigenus Indicus subspecies are the one to pass down the zebu Genes making it their closest ancestor. According to taxonomy the Indicine cattle like zebu etc today are direct descendants of the indian Auroch.
@@rachdarastrix5251
🤔🤔👉 What's a "headack"?? Is it the technical term for the head of Holger Färber's wiener? Are you a wiener scientist? That MUST be the answer! 🤔
👉👉 Anyway, the ancient animals depicted in the old cave paintings had "different horns" because they werent really cattle to begin with! The paintings were much older than originally thought, more like 260,000,000 years old, as opposed to 1,000 years as originally assumed. Back then the early proto-people lived among giant horned horses! That's why the cattle paintings looked wrong, because they were actually ancient were-horses! 👍😁👌

Technically speaking, no. The aurochs isn't back. But hey, at least a branch of it's descendants are roaming around freely. I think?
Yeah. There was a breeding program funded by members lf the Nazi regime, but this herd could have been bred from a different breeding program. Nonetheless, they are all a type of domesticated cattle being bred to become feral
@DHCETC I should think so! I was very much against bringing back woolfes to Germany (but who listenes to plain me), and they have had nothing but trouble from them, and damage to the sheep farmers, also financial ruin to some, because of that. Stupid isn't even the word! I've heard they want to bring back wild bears to western Europe as well. Totally idiotic, but most of all even more dangerous, than woolfes
@JK Rai - The Nazi's were following a different path with a different strain/s. The results of that work were the "Heck" breed. I don't know that much about Heck cattle, but I've heard the results leave a lot to be desired - too much aggression and not enough genetic similarities.
@@unavitadellamusica I so agree. In America, they're bringing back all the big predators. We thinned them iut for a reason. When I raised my kids, letting them play in the woods was common. Now, I wouldn't let them until they were old enough for firearms.
@@YSLRD unfortunately, in Germany firearms are forbidden to be owned just by anyone. Only certain induviduals (like forest rangers) are allowed to have and use them, in a restricted way. The sheep farmers may have them, but are forbidden to shoot any woolf, even if it attacks/steels their sheep, because it is a protected species now there. Could there be anything more idiotic?
I find this video very calming for some reason.
Most people think of jungles, islands, or African savanna when they're asked to picture pristine wilderness. I however picture temperate subalpine woodlands and mountainous areas of Central and Western Europe and Eastern North America. I find such landscapes to be the most beautiful representation of nature and wilderness. It's only a shame that there's so little left, especially in Europe.

Neither. Two groups are attempting a more scientific method of back breeding. One started with Heck cattle and attempting to breed out some genes and breed in others to make them more like the original, and the other started from scratch. Not sure which this is.

The purpose of the Taurus project is to have a grazer that fills the ecological niche of the extinct Aurochs. An exact replica of Aurochs is not all that relevant or achievable for now. Somebody tell me wrong please.
I’m pretty sure I heard an geneticist say that it wasn’t possible (and the ethics are in question) at this moment. Interesting this isn’t the first time someone tried. One of hitlers right hand scientists/genetics men and his brother (I believe) tried to make an auroch and basically achieved some aesthetic success but that seems to be it. (He is famous but I can’t remember the name). I think he attempted a equine as well and gave it his name. I think someone said his creation were no more than cows that look like aurochs.
@@swilson5320 Heck is the name. Lutz and Heinz Heck. They were brothers and owners of zoos in Berlin and Munich, and attempted to re-create the Auerochs by mixing ancient breeds. They collected primitive breeds from southern Europe (some of them still in use for that purpose) as well as modern breeds without obvious similarities to ancient aurochsen. They did have succes to a degree, especially regarding coat colour. But horns were still too short and thin, they were too small overall and lacked other typical features the Aurochs had. Nontheless they claimed to have been succesful in re-creating the true Aurochs, partly because in that time nobody really knew how the Aurochs looked like. The outcome, heck cattle, were released in some areas, but most fell victim to the war. heck horse were also created, they look similar to konik horses.
But this isn't a genetic test exactly. It's not the attempt to re-create the Aurochs exactly and with the same genetics, but to create a similar looking breed of wild cattle that may replace it in nature. Aurochsen were very important for shaping European and Asian ecosystems, thus the plan is to create a breed that can fill this now empty niche.

Nice looking cattle, a long way from being an actual aurochs tho!
Technically not really that far away. Aurochs are the ancestors of domesticated cattle so when speaking about dna they are already like 99%.
@@antsfinland2760 That's not saying much buddy... Man and chimp have 99% same DNA as well. So yeah, this cattle is about as close to a auroch as a chimp is to a human... Lol
@@Quacklebush I wouldn't say so... Chimps can't breed with humans for example, but aurochs and domestic cattle could. They are the same species, but the domesticated cattle is a different sub-species
For example canis lupus familiaris (which is the scientific name for the dog) and canis lupus lupus (scientific name for the eurasian wolf) are the same species of grey wolf (canis lupus). Just different sub-species. The red wolf for example is canis rufus, they are closely related to grey wolves, but not the same species. This is the same with auroch and domestic cattle

I heard that Aurochs were aggressive and when they bred less aggressive cattle the Aurochs traits went away. So, if we bring back the Auroch appearance, does the aggressiveness return as well?
I mean probably, i'm sure the animal would be aware of its size and capability at least
I think that is the point. For these animals to survive in the wild, the adults have to be fierce enough to protect the young from wolves. You don't want a docile animal in that environment.
@@sanjivjhangiani3243There are no predators, so these cattle will always be domesticated

Not real aurochs, but nonetheless, this gives you a idea on what they might've looked like in their true wild state.
Martial Kintu it is a real aurochs but not like full blooded, like the mom is probably a cow instead of an actual aurochs
Mr Mister well it’s more complicated and more close to the actual thing than what this man thinks. The concept is using breeds that have relation to the extinct species and selecting the desired characteristics to bring the extinct species back, sometimes species that aren’t related but that have common physical and genetically traits will be used to, I don’t know if that’s also used in the aurochs. To keep it simple, just imagine they grab a bunch of your great grandfather descendants and marry them so that the offspring basically is genetically and physically as close as possible to your great grandfather (obviously not such risk of inbreeding as would be happening in the example I’m giving).
@@juandavidrestrepoduran6007 More close to the actual thing than what this man thinks?? Seriously how do you know what this man thinks?? This is an attempt to achieve an animal breed with a phenotype that resembles a wild type ancestor, it's not the actual ancestor. So the OP comment stands, this is not a real auroch.

In 1938,Nazi brothers two brothers,Lutz and Heinz Heck recreated them. When Lutz released his back-bred aurochs into a reserve in 1938, he wrote that, “the extinct Auerochs has arisen again as a German wild species in the Third Reich.”
Lutz’s aurochs mostly died in the bombing of Berlin at the end of the war, but his brother’s examples in Munich survived, and the siblings’ efforts have been carried into the present under the guise of a much different endeavor known as rewilding - or the recreation of extinct wild landscapes.

Yes, they compared the Aurochs DNA with various breeds, then selected certain breeds that fit the description in both appearance and behaviour and through selective breeding managed to back breed them as close as this, even though it's not perfect yet. Just google the Tauros Programme, that's the name of the whole process.
Yes backbreeding
YamiKisara Yami, do they contain a fragment of bulls that contained some auroch's DNA? I know that some breeds of bulls in India and Germany contain some of their DNA. Also something about a nazi breeding effort, bulls too violent, then kaboom, death.
