How did you make the wheel that grinds the apples? The rest looks great!

      Hi Evan,
I took a 1 x 6 piece of Oak, cut (6) 6 x 6 blocks then glued/stacked the blocks. I drew a 6" circle on one of the faces (perpendicular to the glued faces) and drilled a 3/4" hole through the center of the block. Took that to my bandsaw and cut the the 6" circle out, leaving a pretty decent wood drum.
I center drilled a 3/4" piece of bar stock and drove a long steel roll pin through the hole. I pushed the shaft through the drum until the roll pin hit the drum. I marked the roll pin location on the face, pulled the shaft and routed a slot where I had marked the roll pin. Push the shaft back through the drum and seat the roll pin into the routed slot. Epoxy the pin in place.
Take this new drum/shaft part to the drill press, (helps to have a set of V blocks) and drill holes where ever your heart desires. I screwed #8 x 2" stainless steel panhead screws in the holes and sprayed the drum with a few coats of lacquer. This gets installed in the apple box and the screws adjusted in or out to control clearance.
This was the hardest part of the press to design. It's worked pretty well so far. Good luck.
      Thanks for your comments,

Curious what you used to condition the wood before the juice hits it! Awesome design! Would love to see some plans if you have any?!

      Hi Edward,
I used a spray can lacquer to cover all the parts that I thought would get wet. 2-3 coats held up pretty well to about a dozen squeezes. I might need to touch things up each season, but so far, still bright and shiny.
I drew a Google Sketchup model to help with the build, but it isn't very complete, especially the scatter (the grinding drum). I built that on the fly. I don't have current plans to make the drawing available...but?
      Thanks for your generous comments.
