  • The June 4th Revolution was a revolutionary uprising in Ghana led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings on June 4, 1979. The revolution overthrew the military government of General Fred Akuffo and established the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) in its place. The revolution was led by Rawlings, who had been a member of the Ghana Armed Forces since 1967. The revolution was also supported by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and other civil society organizations.
    The revolution was sparked by the corruption and economic mismanagement of the Akuffo government. Inflation was rampant, while essential services and commodities such as food, medical care, and electricity were increasingly scarce. The situation was made worse by the Akuffo government’s decision to devalue the cedi, the national currency. The movement gained momentum as people across the country took to the streets to demonstrate against the government and demand a change.
