  • In this video we will share a direct comparison between the Ampero Stomp II, versus the HeadRush MX5. First of all we will share a demo song hearing the 2 units in action, then we will compare the technical characteristics of the 2 units with a very detailed comparison chart, then we will hear more sounds in a dedicated section of this video where we will compare the units against a Plexi for overdriven tones and a Fender Deluxe for clean tone, checking out the frequency response, the dynamic range management, the note envelope, etc. Then we will also compare the effects of these 3 units, and finally I will give you my 2 cents. So, I hope you enjoy and please don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell, as it’s gonna really help me to make more video like this!!!

Hi Leo! Thank you for this great video as always. The detail of your reviews is unmatched.
There’s something I would like to comment, and I think you’ve never talked about and to me and many is an important factor. The gap between presets in many recent effect units including high end ones. I like to change a few effects at a time including amp models but if there’s a gap or pause in the sound I can’t use it for playing live. Turning effects on and off is important but changing presets seamlessly is what makes the difference between a live unit and a home or studio one, at least for me. Could you test this feature on your videos?
Again, thanks for your great reviews!

    • @LeoGibsonGtr

Hi Ricard, thank you so much, I'm super happy that you like the video!
Actually in the special feature section of the comparison chart, I've reported that the HeadRush manages scenes, that are missing in the Ampero. This means that the Headrush can basically swtich many effects on and off seamlessly, I mean without gap and this feature, so far, is missing in the Ampero.
      I hope this help.
      Thank you once more!

In my two cents, I think I have summarised the main differentiating factors like the computer app, the exp pedal, the form factor, the tweacking option, etc...so it depends on your needs...in any case both are good products.

Overall, I have been quite happy with the MX5. It does a lot of things very well for a decent price. I do however wish there were a couple more mic position options and factory cabs offered (maybe in an update.) I have not been overly thrilled with the included IR's. I would load some after markets in but don't want to go through the hassle. I actually like that the Ampero 2 doesn't have a foot treadle. Nice desktop unit for recording.

Awesome review Leo! Both are very good units but as a Headrush owner I hear what I can't tweak out of the Headrush. All the amp models breakup and resonate at very low unusable range and high mid eq range which makes hard if not impossible to dial a fat but not fuzzy sound with post eq (which doesnt interfere with bass guitar range) and lacks picking dynamics which is why it has to go. The clean sounds (especially with its elven reverbs) are awesome on the Headrush, but at the end of the day it sounds somewhat flat for me.

Great comparison as always! I used to own an MX5 but I sold it for two reasons that I think people should be aware. 1) The switches are not very responsive. I have had plenty of times where I went to change scenes and i took a few presses before it finally registered or it would think I was holding down a pedal and it would do something completely different. 2) The expression pedal cannot be calibrated. If your pedal stops going from 0% to 100% you are out of luck. Mine would only go as low as 28% and therefore it made the expression pedal useless. The unit is by far the best sounding budget multi fx pedal I've ever owned though!

Great comparison videos I don’t know how you find the time to do these. To answer the pitch shift question , the headrush pitch shift whammy is so smooth and sounds musical. I have not been able to get a good whammy result with the Ampero 2. It’s unusable current;y in my opinion
The Ampero 2 only has one expression pedal as mentioned, so I bought a soul press 2 real wah, sounds great and frees up a block. But I wanted to use the expression pedal for whammy, but the whammy is horrible
The MX5 also handles all i throw at it. The Ampero 2 needs to be optimized. Or it may not stay with the competition. It is very limited for me, once I use a few blocks of my choice with effects. And I don’t use complicated signals.
I love the pc editor, but currently, at least for me, you cant use the editor and the unit interface at the same time, if the editor is open, using just the editor is great. Using the Ampero 2 to edit on the physical box is great without the editor being open. But trying to use the physical box while the editor is plugged in causes the editor and the unit to have delays in transferring i so and causes issues
That being said, the Ampero 2 is a great sounding box. The amp tones are really good in the room , maybe better than the MX5 To my ears
MY 2 CENTS; They need to fix the editor / unit combo WORKING AT THE SAME TIME, and definitely must optimize the DSP.

ok, I finally got my ampero II and Ive been playing with it all day and here are my 5 cents in my experience (thou nobody asked). I used it with a poweramp and with four cable connection with a small joyo zombie amp connected to a 2x12.
    the pros:
first of all the sound quality is amazing, and the four cable connection worked perfectly, the preamp distortion blended perfectly with the effects of the ampero, I tried all the combinations in pre and post and it works just as it should, Im sure if someone want to add other pedals to the ampero it would work perfectly, you can also bypass the ampero using the footswitches so if you want you can disable it on the fly just like any other analog pedal. I tried the cab simulators and IR but since I use my own cabinet I didnt really used them. the computer app is more than useful, you can tweak here and there with the touchscreen and it works just fine, but starting a new patch from scratch it would be very difficult if not impossible to edit every single parameter to perfection without a computer interface, the app also have a brief description of each effect and its controls wich is very useful. its very compact and light, you can fit your entire rig in a backpack. did I mention that it sounded AMAZING? the high gain settings are brutal, it feels that the guys that made the ampero are all metalheads. about the effects, it has A LOT of them and the ones I tried sounded very good with a couple of exceptions, some are different versions or modded versions from the same effect, for instance it has like 3 tube screamer plus one called lovepedal eternity that sounds colossal, it also has the precision drive, the centaur... all the classics and more.
the cons: I guess that the DSP is not as powerful as the one on the headrush but so far it hasn't been a problem at all, maybe in the future it could be, I dont know. it has 2 effects that allows you to pitch shift or up or downtune your guitar, one thats an emulation of the digitech drop that sounds awful really really bad, and another one thats an emulation of the "blue whammy" (dont remember the name) thats sounds ok but still not up to the sound quality of the other effects. I hope this get better with the next software upgrade. so if you want to take only one guitar to your next rehersal, tough luck, youll have to wait or buy the pedal separately.
in my opinion, the difference in price between the ampero and the headrush is not much but it is a big gap minding the two products are pretty much the same, specially in terms of sound quality. I got my ampero free shipping so I got it about the same price that I would get the headrush. I havent tried the mx5 myself but most of the compare videos Ive seen show that both have more or less the same sound quality, the mx5 do better in some stuff, the ampero in other. regardless, in all reviews Ive seen the mx5 seems to be lacking in the high gain ultra metal brutal deppartment, by lacking many classic high gain amp simulations and by overall lower gain settings which seems to be a complaint in every video Ive seen about the mx5, this may or may not change in future software updates. besides, the mx5 has a more powerful DSP and is cheaper. in the other hand the ampero has the computer app, without it making a patch to sound "ok" it is already a pain in the ass, but making a patch to sound as good as it could and to squeeze every drop of tone you can get from these tiny machines it is IMPOSSIBLE without a computer interface.
did I make the best choice with the ampero II stomp?? Im not sure yet but so far I guess I did. since Im more in to metal I dont use too many effects so the DSP limitations hasnt really been a problem but that might change when I buy a stereo power amp, that could change everything.

  • @BuleriaChk
    @BuleriaChk 10 місяців тому +1

Excellent review and musicianship, thanks a lot. I agree that the lack of computer app for the MX5 is a deal breaker (for me). Another major factor is that the Ampero has the Matchless Chieftain model, which is my absolute go to for my use case. (The only other models I have found were Jason Sadites ands ToneJunky TV Tonex captures - if you know of any other appearances in amp modelers, please let me know)
Also, the Headrush uses 12v vs the standard 9v for the Ampero, and I don't often plug my amp sims into my automobile cigarette lighter...
I am very, very impressed with the Ampero 2 Stomp.
I would really like to hear a comparison between the Blackbird tube preamp and the other solid state units... (i.e., is it really THAT much better than, say, the HX Stomp or Ampero?)

To be fair, using the same IR in each is probably the best way to present a direct comparison of the amp modelling, otherwise there are just too many variables. I've never owned a Hotone product but I was a Headrush user for a while. I found their stock cabs to be mostly okay, especially for cleaner amps. I did use some of my own IRs but to be fair I've done that with Helix too so it's probably more my preference than out of any necessity.

I came here because i want to buy the Ampero, and wanted to know if it holds, compared with the Headrush.. and i must say it does.
I'm just a bit concerned about what you mentioned about the DSP power, and the Ampero struggling when using 2 different amps simultaneously. Since what i want is to play on a stereo approach, with different amps..... now, i am a little scared of spending so much money on an unit that might not cut it, for me.
Might as well stick with Guitar Rig, and ToneStack Pro on the iPad, huh ?

I would say that the Ampero internal cabs are really taxing the DSP, but with more options in terms of mic positioning compared to the MX5. If you use the Ampero internal CAB I think that you run the risk to run out of power earlier compared to the MX5, but as I was saying you can really tweak a lot more the tone with the Ampero. So you are exchanging DSP for tone...
This is not scientific...but for saying that "nothing is for free"...maybe a unit offers the possibility to load one more fx block, but with worse mic sim, and vice versa.

Come on, Leo. I bought an Ampero Stomp one year ago and a MX5 two weeks ago and I can't be more clear: MX5 its way better! There is no comparison. Ampero have slightly better amps. BUT:
    1) Modulation effects and ambience. Headrush it is waaaay superior. Most modulations in the Ampero are unusable.
    2) Funcionalities and the building structure. MX5 seems sturdier and comes with a expression pedal, and scenes, no glitch between changing rigs and etc (i know you have talked about that, but that is a big deal).
    3) DSP: MX5 - 11 blocks free at the chain with noise filter already included. And you can put 11 heavy reverbs if you want and it will handle. Ampero you have to put a noise filter almost everytime and it blows the DSP capacity very very often limiting your options.
    4) IR's: Headrush - 96Khz. Ampero 48khz. ;)
    5) Headrush doesn't have a computer app, but the touch screen functionality it is fantastic, better then in the Ampero.
    6) Updating and organizing MX5 its easier! Updating takes like 20seconds. Ampero takes more time and it does have a very sensitive electronic core. Anything goes wrong during updating, and you are in trouble, mr.
    7) Loop: you can record your loops at MX5, not at ampero. And you have 3h and 30min of loops if you will. And using loop in ampero always come with a little glitch eating a milisecond of the loop that sucks. MX5 transition between end and start again the loop is smooth, the way it should be.
At the end of the video you seem to say that they are side by side, but they are not.

the aampero dsp is too weak for the new effect algos they added....this is quite the oversight.

I think they need to optimize the algorithms

The ampero has a wider range and softer sound.
    I prefer ampero.

The Hotone ampero stuff is almost IMPOSSIBLE to play live metal with. The feedback and noise is unreal. Absolutely un usable for metal live. You need an xlr with a ground lift or di box.

Maybe you can use a TRS to XLR converter, as the Ampero has balanced out.

I did buy først the Ampero.... it didn't work for me.... Now I'm working on The Headrush MX5 and I did pulled som very nice solos sounds and a decent/ usable Acoustic simulator too, but still haven't found any good "country/Chicken Picking usable sound yet....but I haven't yet spendt so many hours on this pedalboard.

There is tons of bass compression and treble clipping with Headrush in these samples. Poor dynamics. Probably built with hi-gain market in mind.

    Caro Leo PRS?
    Sei un bravissimo chitarrista comunque

I don't understand some people. The Headrush has the best touch screen UI on the market you don't need an editor!!!!!!!!! Everybody wake up!!!!!

The Headrush is a trash product from an equally trash company. No amount of rebranding old Avid and Peavey software will change that.

Just upgrade the ampero with a better sample rate and sprinkle some more IR slots on top and we have a contender for the best recommendation in the 500€ price bracket. Perhaps until a comparable proposition from Nux hits the market.
Btw. It's funny how the dude owns more expensive gear than most professional musicians but still can't afford a tutor for a couple of afternoons to fix that horrible pronunciation.

Hi, thank you for sharing...I simply don't have time to spend in English lessons...all my time goes to create music for these video and of course...to buy gear...:)...

Exactly, no fixing needed. It did take me a while to get used to Leo's accent, but after a few vids I got used to it and it wasn't an issue. I dig it now, haha. He does some of the best gear reviews out there. It actually seems Leo takes the time to enunciate his words. Where do you hail from Leo?
