  • In need of a machine more suited to hacking up motorways than my venerable XT600, I found a cheap example of BMW's 750 triple. Bought as a non-runner will it prove a easy fix up or have I let myself in for another big rebuild!?

    Hi Max! I'm a long time viewer, but I don't usually comment - but today I just needed to reach out and thank you for spreading some optimism in the world with your wonderful content. I think that everyone needs a bit of grandad sitting there helping out with some wisdom, some experience and giving some reassurance. Everyone needs someone showing that skill, passion and curiosity can be the deciding factor and that buying a bike from Ebay can maybe lead to a a win. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share that us. Perhaps it isn't worth the time that you put into it financially, but for normal people in their everyday lives - perhaps you inspire someone, perhaps you lift someone's mood and perhaps, like me, you just share a bit of grandad optimism❤

    I restored a K1100 LT a few years ago. Stripped it down to nothing and slowly rebuilt it. Absolute beast of a bike, with full luggage, radio cassette, electric screen etc etc. Even had an interior lamp! Very powerful but very heavy! The three cylinder bikes were supposed to be very smooth but never got the chance to try one. I'm too old for bikes now. Just sold my pride and joy to pay for a new central heating boiler! Such is life. (still got an R65 tucked away but that is going up in value). Good luck with your project, I'm sure you will make a brilliant job of it.

      Incorrect.
      Road Vehicle Lighting regulation 1989
      Any colour other than amber used for livery markings must be approved by special order:
      4.2 RVLR require that retro-reflective markings on the sides of vehicles that are intended to make the vehicle more visible must be amber in colour. Retro-reflective markings of other colours such as the blue, green or red schemes used in the battenburg pattern are currently prohibited unless the Secretary of State for Transport has issued an order under section 44 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (“a special order”). The K75 and K100 are great bikes, my dad had a K100 that he called Brunhilda, him and mum toured all over Europe many times on her as well as being his daily(wind, rain, snow and ice) bike. Shaft drive lube is very important if you don't know the history but otherwise a very solid bike the K75 .

  • @stevek3036
    @stevek3036 8 місяців тому +3

    The K series engines should run the fuel pump (in the tank along with a filter) for 2 seconds when you turn the ignition on to pressurise the fuel rail - It ran but I could not hear the distinctive sound that the pump makes. As soon as you press the starter the pump should start running and will run continuously once the engine is running. There is a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail that is vacuum controlled so worth checking that the vacuum hose is not torn. It shouldn't stop the engine from running though. £800 is a very good price for a K75

    I used to own a K100, the 4cyl version. In some ways this K75 is better because the K100 suffers from engine vibrations. It makes your hands wrists and feet feel numb if you ride it long distances. I believe this K75 is a 3 cyl with a balance shaft which eliminates those vibrations. Nice bike, easy to work on. 1 of the first production bikes to have EFI.
    There is 1 thing you should look out for. If coolant and oil mix at some point it might not be the obvious blown HG. Instead it might be the axel seal of the water/oil pump. Yes, it has both water and oil pump on 1 axel. There are improved replacement parts available.
    This knowledge might save you an unnecessary HG job. (Been there, done that)

    [ex police recovery operator] i remember when the police bikes had ABS retro-fitted to them, they took out a decent size battery, fitted the ABS module in it's place, then squeezed a tiny battery back in, guaranteed flat battery in 5 mins at the roadside with the blues on...
    only weak link is the fuelpump, i remember them being quite vocal, couldn't hear yours

    The K75 is an excellent machine with a very under stressed engine. Myself, wife, camping and climbing kit did a 5 week French tour on one thirty years ago. A 42,000 it's barely run in. the Fort9 guy on this interweb has done an excellent video about the K75 and its over engineered fuelling system - its from a bmw car. At £800 that's an absolute steal.

    Those old 750 triples last forever with a bit of basic maintenance. you just need to make totally sure the drive shaft is 100% if not maintained they can seize up which could be unpleasant at motorway speed. It would be easy to look up on line, but I think the later model ones had a different driveshaft spline spec that was less prone to be troublesome. There are different fixes for this and some fitment issues, a guy in the USA was selling a kit for this some years ago, you would need to spend an hour or two online researching this.

  • @maffart3797
    @maffart3797 8 місяців тому +4

    I have a K100 and these are great bikes (if a touch heavy). Mechanically simple and easy to work on. Pretty much bullet proof as long as you do the basic servicing. Things to check, the splines where the drive shaft connects to the rear wheel bevel box and engine to gear box splines (and check for oil leaks into the dry clutch from either the engine output shaft or gearbox input shaft. And probably refoam the seat if you are feeling especially energetic. Plus bonus Grandad supervising :)

    Hey Max,
    Wonderful to see one of these underappreciated triples found its way to you.
    I currently have three in my posession after somehow becoming "that guy" for these bricks.
    Get in touch if you'd like a full BMW service manual and wiring diagram (in english, no worries).
    Just a word of warning: K75s with the original starter relay don't like to turn over on low battery, the points tend to arc-weld and keep running the starter until the battery is disconnected , which makes for a rather unpleasant experience.
