  • In this video I review the Roland Rubix 24 USB Audio Interface. You get a quick overview over the features and the pros and cons. You learn what is great about the Roland unit, but I'm also giving an honest review and talk about what some of the problems are. I've had this interface for a few years and feel after this time I can give an educated point of view.

Good review pointing out certain issues, after watching your review and reading many of the comments I honestly think many of the problems stem from using this interface with a PC, windows and drivers, I have an EDIROL/Roland UA25 interface that I run on a 2012 MacBook (so quite old now) I have never had any problems in any way even using the usb to power the interface as well directly from the MacBook, complete clear audio signal (No Hum) and never have to reboot.
I’m sure many will disagree with me which is totally fine and their right but I’ve always used a Mac for sound recording and production for at least 20yrs and have never had any issues with interface problems, I have friends who use a PC and windows for years they’ve always experienced so many issues and usually driver issues. PC are great for graphics, Macs are far superior for audio, sound recording and production. Once you’ve used a Mac you’ll never go back!!! You never have to download or update drivers on a Mac as well, so much less hassle.

Thank you for the honest review. I have switched from a Focusrite 4i4 to a Rubix 44 because of driver problems - more specifically Windows problems. The Focusrite was working perfectly for a few months, but after various Windows updates the Focusrite as a Windows sound device stopped working intermittently. The Rubix is much more stable in that regard. I think using a dedicated DC power instead of USB power also contributes to fewer issues.
As troubleshooting the Focusrite, I have tried using a dedicated USB header hub from the motherboard (use USBTreeView app) for the interface, with mixed results. On a MacBook both the Focusrite and Rubix performed perfectly. I agree that the resultant sample sizes are strange.

Thats really interesting to read. Thanks for your response. What should be avoided imho is to use passive USB hubs. But with active hubs or directly off the device (what I did) I would expect any interface to work just fine. To be fair, I didn't test the Rubix with dedicated power source, it didn't even cross my mind. If it works good with that, that's great. However in my opinion that need for a dedicated power source would still be a big minus for the Rubix.
Anyways - really glad that you found your working solution. In the end we all just need gear to get our creative workflow up.

Thanks for the very thorough review. Like others I wonder if the driver instability has a powering aspect to it. I use the Roland UA25EX and while that has occasional driver issues it is generally OK. For my application the built in compressor limiter is a very attractive feature as it allows use close to the digital peak level without risk of clipping.
I may well try a Rubix 24 and see how I get on with it (fixed PC rarely unplugged) but your central point that when you buy hardware it is as much the driver as the equipment that determines how it works is very true.
    Once again, an excellent review.

Hey there, thank you! If you get along nicely with the Rubix I would be happy for you! I was not meaning to trash-talk the Rubix with this video. For me it "has to" work as advertised or as designed, that includes power via USB. And I fully agree, the driver is also a critical part of the whole thing. But I'm happy for anyone who enjoys this interface.

I'ma bit late to the party, but here my 5 cents:
    1) Balanced outputs (3:20) - this card uses resistive balanced audio instead of symmetrical balanced, which means (as far as i can tell) that differential receiver on mixer/whatever you plug this does not work - this may be(but not exclusively) reason you're getting hum/noise.
    2) USB B problems (5:00) - the plug itself, I believe, is not a problem at all, cuz plug-n-play/reboot-to-make-work-again - it's all driver/mode(exclusive/shared) issues.
Anyway, thx for the review. Looking into buying this dingus box myself.

Presonus 68c interface! It has comparable quality ,rather transparent low distortion near zero latency, mic preamps and also comes with Studio One DAW software for seamless plug and play compatibility on mac and pc. The program is awesome, simple, powerful, inexpensive & also the interface prices are very competitive as well !
I think the L/MAX preamps in the presonus units are a bit better than rolands onyx mic pres and they are much more stable and reliable than
focusrite mic pres . Focusrite uses mic pres modeled after more high end costing mic pres used for decades in very expensive mixing consoles in UK. Neve is one of them . Neve mixing consoles have been used on beatles albums, reason they are upwards of $300k +
So how good is a mic pre in a $2-300.00 interface really going to be , when its modeled after one that is used in a 1/2 million dollar console ? More of a gimmick than anything with their new “AIR” button on the front inputs ! “ ok lets just add some noisy open room air to the signal when the air button is engaged to make it appear and sound like you are getting more headroom on the input ! No thanks ! If you really want the best you can get for a true professional home studio… I have tested (UA Universal Audio - Apollo) , Apogee, Presonus - Quantum, as well as some other high end companies interfaces…..
THE INTERFACE EQUIPPED WITH THE BEST PROVEN CONVERSION AND PREAMP QUALITY AS WELL AS OPTIMAL CONNECTIVITY IN THE PRICE RANGE of the (“TRUE PROFESSIONAL HOME STUDIO”) IS THE ARTURIA AUDIOFUSE STUDIO 18in/20out. Hands Down this has the sheer sonic quality of a million dollar console…
PERIOD ! Plus aptX Bluetooth Zero Latency Audio Streaming inputs incorporated in the unit ! All I can say is , I will never ever buy anything else !
I have exactly what I need ! Runs with every DAW On the market with no special driver needed for mac or pc and also can be used with no DAW as a sound unit with its own dedicated control software app. It also uploads the software itself and sets itself up to the computer it is connected to all you do is choose inputs and outputs in preferences and your off and running !
      Hope this helpes !

If the unit is introducing hum, does the nain plug in power cord have a 3 prong plug or just a 2 prong plug with a wall wart ? Because if the interface doesnt have a 3 prong plug then you must connect the ground screw/connection on the rear of the unit to the ground screw connection on the rear of the mixing console that it is slaving to ! Usually when an interface has the option of 5v powered (usb) connection as well as 9v all the way up to sometimes as much as 24v powercord connection as well , therefore my point being…. If you are powering the unit using a standard usb-a . usb-b , or even some usb-c cords , typically you won’t have a hum issue unless you have power cords running parallel with or even somewhat crossing unshielded audio cords , uncommonly even shielded cords. But when you have a unit that has the ability to be powered by a much higher voltage source ie: 110/120v 50/60 hz plug that is really the only time that you could run into an issue with hum mainly on the outputs if they are unshielded from each other whether they are
    TRS-tip,ring,sleeve/balanced
    …..or…..
    TS-tip, sleeve/unbalanced
TRS has a ground while TS does not.
As sad asbit is to say….. if sny of the ideal remedies I mentioned don’t help out, unfortunately it is probably the generic shielding being manufactured these days on the outputs from one another and or the inputs.
    BTW
true 48v phantom power can not & will not be achieved using usb bus to power the interface. Therefore if you want true 48v phantom power headroom db levels with minimal distortion on the channels I recommend utilizing the 110/120 power whenever available. Experiment between the 2 & LMK what you found and or figured out !
    Hope I could help !

According to the Roland product page the XLR inputs have the following specs: "INPUT (1L, 2R) connectors (XLR type): -60-- -12 dBu" >>> -60 dBu is exactly what you need for an SM7B. But - as you can see - for that level the input of the Rubix needs to be turned up to the absolute max. You need to check for yourself if the noise floor of the Rubix at that input level is still quiet enough for your purposes.

Hi, thanks for your video... I was really close to buy the Rubix24... but after watching your video I have got a big doubt... I would use it just to record my home digital piano performances using any opernsource software compatible with my Win10 laptop(like Audacity) or my iPad (like GarageBand)..... I wonder if the USB issue that you have got is just an unlucky case or a persistent issue of this device (that looks buit very good). I didn't really get the bufferin issue as I never have an Audio Interface, what shuold another model of Audio Interface allow you to set in the buffering section? Unfortunately there are not many video reviews about this device (but a lots of the little brother Rubix22)... but the average feedbacks are between 4 and 4,5 stars...so the maggiority of the users are happy.. I am very confused... Do you definitley don't reccomend this device? What would you reccomend as competitors of this product? Thanks

    • @michaelseebass
      @michaelseebass  3 роки тому +1

Hey there. I understand your concerns.
Regarding the USB connection: yes this could be just an issue with my particular unit. It could... But since the driver's configuration panel is so weird too, I suspect these issues might also be coming from the driver.
Regarding buffering it depends: if all you want to do is record and not (!) have direct digital monitoring (meaning instantly hearing back the audio from your software for monitoring or other reasons) you might be fine. But for monitoring (and general performance) we should be able to set the buffer size in the driver.
My recommendation: The Focusrite Scarlett. It is comparable in price, very stable and reliable, very clear and good sound and it is very wide spread (meaning alot of folks seem to enjoy it). Here is my first look at it: ua-cam.com/video/GBG1iYS3oTk/v-deo.html
There might be a follow up video soon, so far I really like it.

@@mega-driver I don't regret it. It works really good, I'm planning to do a follow up video. You are right, there is no volume knob for direct monitoring on the Scarlett, you can only switch between 3 modes: direct monitoring off, on (mono) and on (stereo). Volume controll for playback would need to be done in your DAW software.

@@michaelseebass I am glad to hear that you are enjoing your new device. You know, I will problably get the 2i2 3th Gen for my digital piano recording and I would like to ask you a clarification that you problably have already tested: Assuming to do a stereo recording (connecting the keyborad to the both two line of the interface with a cable < 3.5mm jack stereo to a > 2x 6.5mm mono) and set the Direct Monitor of your audio interface in stereo, will you hear from your headphones a stereo input during your recording? And will you hear from your headphones the DAW playback of your recording in stereo? I am sking that, because with the previous gen you could just hear a mono DAW playback signal of your recordind and you is not handy that... thanks

@@mega-driver Yes you can hear the inputs in stereo in direct monitoring (you can toogle between Off/Mono/Stereo via a button on the front). And you also hear the DAW playback in stereo

Typical Roland . So close then screws up on small but critical issues. Then they repackage it and try to sell it again.

So you got a power supply with it but never used it but complain this doesn't work and that doesn't work etc. Please do a honest review again with power supply connected. Many switch to Roland from Focusrite and you do not have one but recommend it. Strange. Are you paid to do this video? Regards.

I think there are some missunderstandings or false assumptions here:
      - There is no power supply included.
      - The device can be be powered via USB, there is a hardware switch for that. So I can expect that to work.
      - I sold the Roland.
      - Yes, I do own the Focusrite.
      - No I'm not paid.
And as far as I know, many switch from other brands to Focusrite. I have heard nothing but good from friends using various Focusrite interfaces.

Bumping this thread, the manual states that only the 22 model works off of usb power, and the 24 and 44 require the usb power cable for the full functionality.

@@eisas1306 Can you point me to where in the manual that is? I dont find any info like this.
The 44 has a dedicated DC plug. The 22 and also 24 are supposed to work USB port powered.

The Rubix22 and Rubix24 are 'supposed to work' over USB bus power, you stated...
They can, but it depends on the pc/laptop/iMac/Macbook/iPad/iPhone/Whatever's USB connection if this delivers enough power over usb. This power may perhaps vary per device, I guess.
There must be a good reason why there's a second (micro)usb socket on the backside, meant for powering only. A standard powerbank can deliver enough power, and the USB B bus is then purely for digital signal.
For instance, connected to an iPad (over e.g. Apple's Camera USB3.0 to Lightning adapter) the Scarletts draw too much power: the iPad displays a notification about this issue when connected.
You then will have to power the Scarlett via a secondary powersource, and simultaneously maintain a digital connection. You'll need a Powered USB hub to accomplish this.. meaning you'll probably need a wall socket for this. ou can't use the Scarletts with an iPad/iPhone while being mobile (working battery powered), or outdoors.
Besides these Rubix models, I know that similar Steinberg interfaces also have a second (micro)USB socket for this purpose.
Now, I won't say your issues weren't real. But I don't see the internet filled with bad reviews either, most personal reviews seem to show satisfied users. There are hardly interface models that have zero negative personal reviews or any issues. I find it very difficult to judge this...

the one thing I want to know is this.... are the outputs accessible with ableton.... OR are they simply THROUGH outputs that are sourced by the interface's inputs?

All four outputs can be accessed through ableton or your DAW, either individually or as stereo pairs 1/2 and 3/4. Hope this helps
