Authentic Stipple Shading Effect in Photoshop | Easy Technique Without Brushes!

  • A Photoshop tutorial for those of us who are not so handy with the brushes... We'll check out a method for turning photos and artwork into authentic-looking ink stipple illustrations. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more original Texturelabs content!
    BONUS: to create the Sun Rays at 01:05:
    1) Create a new image, 2000px by 2000px, with a white background.
    2) Use Filter Gallery→Halftone Pattern, with size set to 12, contrast set to 50, and pattern type set to Line.
    3) Unlock and Rotate the layer 90 degrees.
    4) Use Filter - Distort→Polar Coordinates set to "Rectangular to Polar".

    your lessons are engaging and mind blowing... Those sun rays required a bit of thinking.
    8 bit is a good starting point. the filter gallery only works on 8 bit images.
    Image => Mode=> 8bits
    In the end, turn the layer into a smart object.
    I find keep the file as a smart object allowed me ti transform and move the sun set | rise accordingly. I like having the background as a transparent.
    When using the gradient, make sure the gradient is black and white; then, set the foreground colours back to black and white by pressing "D".
    Shift + click and drag to keep the line for the gradient straight/ flat, if you want to have a flat horizon.

    I would love to see a tutorial that turns images into those classic thatched/line shading sketches that you see in old books and things (think how MC Escher drew his famous “Relativity” drawing if i didn’t explain it well enough). That would be really handy for the style I’m going for in my work.

    for some reason when i add noise nd set blending to hardmix the hardmix doesnt get displayed, when i go back to the smartfilter it still looks hw it looks with no smart filter

    This was an awesome tutorial! Where did you find an image of a skull ? I have been hunting for a wile to find a decent photo on all the free stock sites to no avail.

      Agreed! I try to use only free stock stuff in the tutorials, but could not find anything good either. I think I just grabbed this from a google search, it's a museum replica skull if I remember right....

    For the last step would it be better to use a Selective Color Adjustment Layer? given that it has the RGB color channels and B&W?

      For sure, I like the idea of being able to target the B&W that way... That RGB to CMYK conversion isn't quite as intuitive for me as HSL, but it would totally work!

      Hopefully... So the dots are working, but they're all black and no color? If so, you should be able to switch off that very first Hue Sat to get the color back.... Or is the problem something different?

      Cool look... For that kind of thing, it might be worth checking out Blender... It's free and you can do some awesome 3d environments like that. I think the Photoshopping in that image is pretty minimal, mostly just cutting and lasting things into that cool environment!
