I have a 2012 C300 4Matic with I believe the same problem. I have a rotary thumping sound suggesting a rear CV or U-Joint. Center driveshaft mount and rear propellor shaft joints all check out. Very helpful video. It's nice to see the parts without getting greasy.

It's great to see you work on such a wide variety of transmissions and to see you do the build-ups in addition to the tear-downs. The other transmission guys on this platform should take note. Thanks for the excellent content.

Hey Gary, you can get the front driveshaft out without dropping the transmission, you pull it forward. It involves taking the exhaust and some bolts off on the front diff.
There is a fillplug on the transmissioncase for the transfercase. You prefill it with 700ml. If you don't, the level will not be correct. I takes a very long time for the oil to get to the transfercase thru a very small hole in the oilcooler returnline that comes into the transfercase.
Also that long bolt is onetime use.
By the way, your videos are always good, keep them coming.

@@GaryFerraro It should be on the right side on top of the transmission, it's not from the side. It's a 6mm allen plug, looks the same as the plug in the oilpan.

Good video Gary. Strange design though. So how do you think MB assemble this part? Surely there is some way to disassemble it too. Is it pressed together, are there signs of it being welded together maybe? There must be a universal and not a CV if there is no method of sealing it to retain the grease a CV joint would need. Thoughts? How much do these things cost?

Kind of a goofy design. I'll take the American way: with the u-joints/ prop shafts outside the case where they are cheap and easy to change.. Maybe they just had space restraints and this was what they came up with to make it more compact. I wish you could have got a close up shot down inside there, or cut the old one in half. I'm just curious as to how beefy it looks.. and is it a "u-joint' -- or more of the ball prop, like a CV joint.

It still had play around 2mm but i think it designed that way impact had momentum to break it loose.
