This is way more thorough than I could have hoped, but I should have expected it. Exceptional quality tutorial as always. I sincerely wish a lot of people see this and decide to tackle the project for themselves. Self-hosting is the future. Commercial cloud services can't be trusted and are definitely not our friends.

Mann...I used this last year to setup Nextcloud. I was just following the directions but wasn't really trying to make any sense of any of the reverse proxy stuff, but watching it again really helped me to understand what's going on behind the scene.

To anybody trying this and receiving error 522: make sure your SSL settings in CloudFlare (domain > SSL tab on your left) is set to "full", this is defaulted to "flexible". Took me half a day of figuring out.
Also call your ISP if they are blocking your ports 443 and 80; they should unblock them upon request.

I have my SSL security set to full. On the router 80 external/180 internal, 443 external/1443 internal forwarded. Not sure why but I am still gettin a 522 error.

I really love your content! Since most internet providers are distributing IPv6 adresses now, this tutorial is quite outdated. The web lacks a good unraid/nextcloud tutorial based on IPv6 adress handling...i would really LOVE to see you updating this very useful and beautiful tutorial you made.

Tried it last year and got NextCloud working, but, couldn't get Only Office working. Thank you! I finally managed to repair my broken Nextcloud instance with this video. I was running SQLite before and installed MariaDB with this video instead.
This was a great howto, everything worked as expected for me. I also already was forwarding to homeassistant, so I changed that to swag and now swag can handle all my networking, so that's great.

I keep running into an issue when creating the nextcloud user via the webgui. It says it can't connect to the database. I've tried setting the database host to the ip it's accessing it from 192.x.x.x:3306, localhost:3306, and the port mapped address 172.17.x.x:3306 and none of them work. I tried setting the network mode of each to host or custom (since their 172.17 addresses are not in the same network) and still nadda. Any suggestions?
Delete app data for both services and reinstalled everything
Sorry to hear about the concussion, hope all is well. I’m excited to see some updated and expanded videos on Nextcloud. Not sure which version of Nextcloud you are installing in this video, but if the Nov 29, 2021 release date is any clue, it may coincide with newly released version 23 of Nextcloud. I just upgraded from 22 to 23 yesterday and it installed cleanly and appears to work great. However, I have reencountered the security error message regarding occ db:add-missing-indices which you addressed in your earlier Feb 12, 2020 video titled “How to Fix Various Nextcloud Errors”. I tried to run that occ fix and encountered 47 lines of error messages beginning with “ArgumentCountError: Too few arguments to function OC\App\AppStore\Fetcher\Fetcher::__construct()”. I’m hoping that you might address this in your Part 2 of this updated Nextcloud series.
Just a quick edit... there was an update to the Nextcloud Docker files yesterday which apparently corrected the problem. Prior to running that update, I reran the occ command and was still getting the errors, but following the update, it executed with no problems.

Thanks for this video. I got stuck on how to specify the database server on the nextcloud setup page. Changing localhost to the IP of the server (as you did) works!

Need some help here....I did setup duckdns and cloudflare as stated, but I can't seem to get on the swag homepage, I am able to ping both the domain and the duckdns reverse proxy. I tried portforwarding 443 to the server, but when I test for open ports it says it is closed for my public IP..
Happy there is an uptodate guide, because after moving to a new house I am afraid I have to set up my nextcloud again

As Always, another Amazing video, It would be super nice if you had timestamps though, like "Reverse Proxy" setup etc. Also on the Reverse Proxy info it would be nice if you mentioned duckdns because that was what your old video recommended, now I'm thinking there may be something wrong with duckdns

Thank you for your great tutorials! Could you maybe consider doing a tutorial on Seafile? It's much faster and less bloated than Nextcloud. Getting the docker to run is pretty easy but accessing it over swag etc. Pffftttt never was able to get it to work.

Unfortunately it appears my ISP blocks ports 80 and 443
I spent hours trying to get it working, I didn't consider ISP block.
I did a tcpdump on my USG port - no data from an external connect.

Excellent guide! BUT: how do you connect to it from your local network? The way this is set up, the traffic will always go out the internet first even if both client and server are on the local network.
I have this problem , my download speeds in local are limited to my ISP upload speed, VERY SLOW compared to local

TNice tutorials is literally the hardest tNice tutorialng my brain can't comprehend. AnytNice tutorialng else I do takes a few minutes and tNice tutorials is just.. it's just so confusing
If you cannot create a NextCloud Admin account check the mariadb log.
If you look at the mariadb log and see it changing 022 to 0640 you can change the UMASK setting from 022 to 0640 under more settings.
If you look at the mariadb log and it states "World-writable config file '/etc/my.cnf.d/custom.cnf' is ignored" go to your mariadb install under databases and delete any ib_logfile* then restart mariadb.

check mariadb's users. i had to hop into mariadb after the docker install and setup the nextcloud user. for whatever reason, linuxserver's mariadb docker appeared to not create the nextcloud user properly.

I set up nextcloud about a year ago (with your guide), when I started with Unraid. I exchanged swag to nginx proxy manager due to docker caching problems. Big file transfers to the outside (to internet) fill up my docker image. It persisted with nginx proxy manager as well. After searching I discovered, I'm not the only one who is facing this problem.
When I changed to nginx proxy manager, it was far easier to set up. Why using swag? Is there a downside to nginx proxy manager compared to swag? Or is it just a matter of taste?
Maybe a wish for nextcloud video (Christmas is coming ;)):
How do set up a nextcloud cluster? A friend and I want to spread our data between his and my nextcloud server, so when one server is not available you can still use and synchronize your data.

If you get "Error while trying to create admin user: Failed to connect to the database" it might be a red herring. I found someone else who had an issue with using the word "Admin" in the username I had MynameAdmin and it kept failing. Deleted, reinstalled twice, tried all different types of database host IP/hostname, reset all the passwords. So if you have Admin in the user name just try remove that first...
I had problems using 'nextroot' so maybe it doesn't like the word root in there either.
Confused as to where DuckDNS comes into play if we have our own domain and are using Cloudflare

Hi Ed, I followed your installation steps, but when I hit install in the nexcloud webui i get an error:
"Error while trying to create admin user: Failed to connect to the database: An exception occurred in the driver: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name does not resolve"
How did you fix this? Same issue, I think MariaDB is not creating the database properly so nextcloud can't connect to it
@BAZOOKAPANDA Yeah never figured it out... completely stumped me so gave up. Ed normally replies also so disappointed there wasn't a solution here either.
@@seamydobbsno1 I did try one thing. Insted of using mariaDB I used postgresq, I installed the one with a 15 at the end of it, set the same details and chose it in the nextcloud docker. There is no sqlLite error in nextcloud so I assume its fine. So yea substitute mariaDB for postgresql15 and see.

@@bazookapanda if you install em both on the same custom docker network you can use the container name instead of the port for the database eg. MariaDB, and as for the container not creating the db use admirer for gui where you can create it

I'm on the last step where you put NextCloud on the custom docker network but when i click on NextCloud i don't have the EDIT option, its just missing. Any ideas?
I ran into the 502 gateway problem. Instead of manually keying in the ip address. I deleted nginx's resolv.conf file, then restarted the SWAG container to let it regenerate it. Hope it helps someone else!

Also wondering the same. From what I can tell, Cloudflare and DuckDNS can both dynamically track your WAN IP. So why is he pointing Cloudflare to DuckDNS?

@@spacecowboy1033 I just made the CNAME subdomains on Clouflare. I don't recall it all, but followed SpaceInvader1 and IBRACorp videos and kind of muddled my way through.
I have run into a roadblock at the reverse proxy setup. I searched the comments with the hope that it was explained i little more in detail but I didn't see any further information. I have a netgear router and i think I created the port forwarding similar as in your other video. External port is TCP 443 and the internal is TCP 1443. Any suggestions for this old newbie?

Alright throwing this out there. I'm a novice at this especially when we dive into the terminal but I gave it my best shot. I got all the way through and did the final troubleshooting step after getting the 502 gateway error. I'm now getting this: "Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator if this error reappears multiple times, please include the technical details below in your report.
More details can be found in the webserver log."
Anyone have any thoughts on what I can try? Should I start over or find an alternative? Thanks in advance!

If your nextcloud webui link when trying to access nextcloud locally returns a 400 internal error due to http on https port, go to your nextcloud docker settings, enable advanced view, and change the web ui link to https instead of http. That fixed it for me.
Great video. I had tried so many times to set Nextcloud and failed. Watch and follow every step you did and was able to get my Nextcloud fully working no issues. There’s one thing I saw on Nextcloud under Security & setup warnings. It says (The “Strict-Transport-Security” HTTP header is not set to at least “15552000” seconds. For enhanced security, it is recommended to enable HSTS as described in the security tips.
I have been trying to find where I can correct that.
I was able to correct the warnings. Under the nginx/site-confs/default I removed the # in front of the sentence that’s listed for that. Also, under nextcloud/config/config.php added the following command
‘default_phone_region’ => ‘’, and saved all changes made restarted the Nextcloud container and I got the green check mark under overview. I’m all good now.

So I can get to the Welcome to SWAG instance, but then when following the next steps everything falls apart for me. I do all the steps shown in the video but all i get when I then start nextcloud webUI is 'This site can’t be reached' my domain refused to connect. I'm not experienced enough to figure out what I did wrong here...and I can't figure it out for the life of me...

How can I change the maximum upload / download size of files on Nextcloud?
I am running into issues with this as well, especially around uploading from the IOS client a large vide from my camera roll. The file size that fails to upload is 637MB, it fails and then retries in an infinite loop.
