I had the pleasure of meeting Arthur Conley when I sang background vocals for Edwin Starr. In 1975, for two months, we toured South Africa, performing; and Arthur Conley was our opening act; with Bettye Wright coming on as the 2nd act. He was such a nice guy... and lit the stage up every time he performed. A wonderful and very interesting experience.
That was just DOWN RIGHT HEART BREAKING 💔 !! WISH I WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE !! I WOULD OF BEEN ALIVE ..YES ,A REAL ALIVE PERSON ..CLAPPING MY HANDS, SWAYING MY HIPS ,AND SHAKING MY HUMPS WITH MY FEET AND BODY ON FIRE 🔥 FROM JAMMING WITH HIM AND HIS AWESOME BAND !! ID KICK ALL THE OMES OUT,THAT DIDNT LIKE IT, MOVE OUT THE WAY ..GIVE US ..MORE ROOM TO DANCE …LOL
The kids in the audience were lectured to before the concert to behave themselves and stay seated. I experienced that myself. They were told that wild behavior would get them removed and the concert stopped.
He was wonderful .I don't know how anyone can remain seated or even still with him performing .I love his voice his dancing, his entire persona,I love the way he bounces. If I live to be 100 I will be dancing with him as long as I have breath in my body .Love you Arthur you will never be silenced .
Yeah, what's up with those kids..!? So blase and uptight, some of them refusing to be moved. They must've received a paddling from the principal before the show!
I grew up listening to great soul music played by my German dad on his record player whenever he had time off from his intensely busy schedule. Now I'm coming to really REALLY appreciate the music.
Amazing talent! From the worst treatment in human history but rise from the Ashes to show the dead wood how burn !! I love these guys with all my heart y'all ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I toured with AC on the chitterling circuit early 70s as his drummer we hit Trenton & Newark New Jersey and the RKO BUSHWICK. Theater in Boston and Phelps lounge in Detroit our tour group consisted of Arthur Conley Johnnie Taylor Clarence Carter Dee Dee Warrick and the Manhattan's Speedo was the tour manager Otis Reddings brother was Johnnie Taylor's road manager Earl Sims was AC valet this tour was in the heart of dead winter we got snowed in Boston and could do 2 shows in Detroit before it was cancelled do to bad weather however all was not lost it gave me a chance to meet Redd Fox and Slappy White at West 20 Grand as a musician you learn how to survive in certain situations fast if I had to you bet I'd sure do it all over again musicians on the road becomes close as brothers.........Fred Burrell i'm out 🙏 peace.
Thanks for sharing your real-life experience playing with Arthur Conley, Frederick! I'm an old lifelong drummer too, and it's always great to hear from the guys in the back who make it all happen! I've always loved this tune too!
This, I believe, is from the Stax/Volt Revue Live in Norway from 1967 which included The Mar-Keys, Booker T & The MG's, Eddie Floyd, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding and they all brought that energy to the table. Please also check out Arthur Conley's "Funky Street" and the live tracks from his live in Norway album, which he recorded with Arthur Conley & The Sweaters. This Otis Redding protégé brought the house down with his performance, as did Sam & Dave, Otis and the others!

was this back up band the Bar-Kays? if this was on the Beat Club then this would the show that also had Otis Redding on it and the Bar-Kays was his back up band.
I love his music that I grew up on. The audience is a prime example of racism at its best. Where are people of color in the audience just like us enjoying his music and his band? I'm very happy in today's time that we've broke the barrier when it comes to music. Especially, when Black performers only performed for a only white audience which no longer exists.
You have to keep in mind that this was new to the world outside of the US. The stax volt norway tour hit countries that had bever seen a black man much less ones with powerful voices and if you watch the crowds half are in shock but by the time the show is over theyre going bat shit. Youll see some groups in the crowd that had traveled and found this stax sound and these guys that could incite a riot with their energy . They were prob the only reason there were that many people there. Several shows had armed military guarding the stage area from the crowd. They werent security guards or cops.
@@davidreynolds4684 OH no! Everything is racist! Racism racism racism! Or haven't you been programmed yet? When the Western developed world collapses in the near future, it will be YOUR fault due to RACISM, just as it's already your fault that not one, single balack run country is even semi successful without foreign aid. No matter what your stance is. You're a racist (unless you're black of course) and there's nothing you can do about it! Better to hang it up trying to be civil about anything and take your rightful side because "they" aren't going to listen to any rational thought. That much should be crystal clear by now.
54 year's ago this was great enjoyed his music then and now class performer fast forward today and poloticians have created a race problem l don't get it.
What a dynamic performer and what a swingin' band! And what's up with the white audience? If this was The Apollo in New York or The Regal in Chicago they would have been dancing in the aisles!
Absolutely iconic still in 2024. People like this live forever.
He was truly before his time!!
@@swill2342 without a doubt!
He is buried in Vorden, Gelderland in the Netherlands.

To think, Arthur Conley was a mere 21 years old at the time of this performance. Legendary! 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾

Woooow I looked him up when he came to my mind what a powerful voice.
One of the greatest ever! Perfect 🙂

What's wrong with the audience. Are they asleep or dead, he's singing his heart out here. This is from the heart .
It is a shame, isn't it ?!
They are Europeans who have not been ‘experienced’.
Mate they were dead balls in that concert, poor miserable souls.
Could be TV recording or the venue. It is the mid sixties.
Could be England
My father brought this recording into our home in 1967. I will forever enjoy the memory of our family dancing and singing this tune together. 😃

Unbelievable performance ,such a cool dude remember playing this single that my brother had bought home in the sixties , blew me away
WoW I am out of my chair dancing to this still in 2024
ez on the hips but 'em rotating!😅
I loved this song as a child in the sixties, only I thought it was Otis Redding. His energy and vocals are amazing.
Arthur was a close friend of Otis's. He was pallbearer at his funeral.
They performed with all their hearts to these dead crowds. I wish I could have seen these great legends perform.
they were listening, not screaming that you could not hear him, that is how people went to concerts back then
The kids in the audience were lectured to before the concert to behave themselves and stay seated. I experienced that myself. They were told that wild behavior would get them removed and the concert stopped.
Not dead. This is in Norway or one of those Scandinavian countries. People there are very low key.
@@grouchosays This was filmed in Germany, not Norway, but yes your point still stands.

That explains why the crowd looks so very white…I was afraid it was a segregated performance 💔

A Big Hell yeah is an “Amen” from all the country girls who dig the best beat ever! The world needs more of this music Godsend
