Gene Stallings...just a great man. One of the finest men in the world, a great role model. Not just college football, but all of football from the pee-wees to the pros need men like him.
I was there. Still got my ticket stub. When Riddle scored I was actually scared the Stadium at Legion Field was going to collapse. You could feel the concrete vibrate and sway, no joke. I have never heard a louder spontaneous outburst of pure noise like I did when Dennis scored. It was something to behold.
I had given up & left for the concession stand/tunnels... I could not bear the loss! Then, I heard the rumbling and realized I had missed seeing the win. In a minute, my (then) husband found me and throwing me all around said, "You can't ever give up on your team, baby!" Great win but sad night (Stalling's departure)! RTR!
Coach Stallings is a family friend, I have been fortunate to know him and his family. John Mark always had a smile and would squeeze you until you felt like a grape about to pop when he hugged you. They are good people.
I never tire of watching Bama beat Auburn. This was one of the better ones. I'm sure Auburn fans like watching Auburn beating Alabama just as much. Fortunately, I can watch more Bama wins than they can watch Auburn wins.
I love Gene Stallings! He will always be my second favorite BAMA coach ever, right after the Bear. Saban is wonderful, and he's accomplished more; but Stallings just carried himself and represented himself in a way that epitomizes everything BAMA stands for. First class man all the way.
+Gebre Menfes Kidus I agree-Stallings was great in his understated way he carried himself yet the had great success. Saban has created a dynasty but in a way it overshadows what a great job Stallings did!
I really like Stallings, but he lost control of the program sometime around 1995. The OC and DC hated each other and would not ride in the same elevator, coaches were publicly blaming players for losses and players were publicly blaming coaches -- it was a disgrace. A head coach can, if he chooses, leave all of the play calling and all of the recruiting to others, but the one thing he cannot delegate is uniting all the various elements into a single TEAM.
I loved that old Eli. He now broadcasts one octave lower than he did back then. He now broadcasts in the same octave as his regular speaking voice. Was not the case back then.
I was at that game, sitting at the opposite end of the field from where Riddle scored -- just an amazing game; Legion Field always had a great atmosphere.
A big part of what happened in the 90s was that 4 schools were on probation all at one time: Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama and Kentucky. Alabama wasn't televised prior to this season and couldn't go to a bowl game. I remember visiting family as a kid and wondering why a team could've punished that harshly. Postseason bans I got but it was bogus then for SEC schools to be "shut down" other than attending games in person. Stallings was forced out because he was struggling to compete with the likes of Auburn, Arkansas and Mississippi State. LSU was starting to get a little better but the East was a stronger division. Sad that a great man was forced to retire...he probably was going to soon anyway...and then Alabama had 3 coaches that were a complete disaster. The 3rd of which never actually coached a game at all. I agree that Bryant Stallings and Saban are in a league of their own.
Freddie "Yoda" Kitchens the new 2018 Cleveland Browns OC playing QB on this winning drive. He knows a thing or two because he's seen and done a thing or two!
yes he retired, however it was just as much them wanting him to leave. choach Stallings said it him self that he would have liked to had one more year.
Wow, I was only 20 years old but I still remember this game. I couldn't tell who the player was that said get off Freddie Kitchens back baby, but that is funny! RTR!
Bebes was six years older than me, but our high schools were always in the same district. He played for the great Baltimore Colts receiver Raymond Berry's Dad at Paris. My cousin and I played for McKinney.
I was lucky enough to be at Legion Field for several Alabama games. We even went to some USFL games. If stadiums are ever ranked, I hope it goes high on the list. RTR...
@@patslovokia3834 - It's kind of sad. I have seen Legion Field on some "worst stadium" lists on UA-cam. Yes, it is old and run down by modern standards but damnit, The Old Gray Lady is a special place that hosted games that are amazing parts of so many people's memories. I have loved her since I was first taken there as a kid, you know, back when Legion was "The big stadium" in Alabama. 😁
I am a Auburn fan and this is my very FIRST time seeing this game's ending..lol I was overseas in the Navy at that time and now seeing how it ended for us I am GLAD I was gone...😁...and as some said in the comments below, Coach Stallings was/is a class act for real....just giving credit where it's due....but anyways...WAR EAGLE EVERYBODY😷✌⚓
Yeah stallings was a very good coach and we beat spurrier and Florida in 92 then we smacked down the. Unbeatable Miami hurricanes for the national championship the game was a total beat down. And we're 10 pt underdogs 😂
My dad and Gene Stallings was best friends during the 92 seasons and own up until my dad passed away in 96 and Gene and some of the coaches would come to North Alabama and a small town called Union Grove and go dove hunting pheasant hunting down in a place called Partridge Cove when my dad passed away in 96 Gene came to the funeral in Rainsville my uncle's went up to him was wanting his autograph and talkin about football and I'm telling you Gene Stallings came unglued on them he told them that he ain't here to bury the best friend he ever had and wouldn't talkin know football he was supposed to gave my dad a 92 national championship ring but they was some kind of confusion about it and me and Daddy went down to Tuscaloosa and he told Daddy Daddy didn't have one and he open the drawer of his desk and got out this little box and he opened it up and it had Super Bowl rings in it and told Daddy to pick him on and he picked on put it on and no would just swallow his finger and he asked him about the one he had on and he took it off and handed it to my daddy and he said this is the one I want it was a 1977 Super Bowl ring from the Dallas Cowboys he went on to give all us kids some really cool stuff like a anniversary year football hundred years was made out of elephant skin signed by all the coaches to players and Daniel Moore paintings and give Daddy Bunches of them Gene Stallings is a straight-up good man❤❤❤❤❤❤
I spent the whole 3rd quarter in the jail in the south end zone. A drunk auburn fan pulled mu nephew down for walking up the stairs between them trying to get to our seats. Big mistake. His nose wasn't the same. He didn't press harges on me and they let me out mid-way of the 4th quarter to see the game winning drive. You learn from your mistakes..lol
The 1957 Auburn team is the only team to win a championship while on probation, things were different back then. And of coarse they cheated for their next championship year with Scam Newton.
Um... they didn't, he retired to spend more time with his family. Once you win a national championship at Alabama, you pretty much have to break the law to get fired.
The AD was jealous of Bebes' popularity and there was a conflict between the two so Bebes had to go. The AD was let go a couple of years later when Bama realized the mistake they made but it was too late.
That’s how you do it baby😂😂😂😂😂 lost to Tennessee, miss st, and Florida. Finished in a bowl game by beating a #16 team by 3 pts and finishing #11…. Mediocre for Bama. Perfect example of why a Saban came. Roll tide
Bryant, Stallings and Saban. What a tremendous trio of coaches which The University of Alabama has been blessed with.
Gene Stallings...just a great man. One of the finest men in the world, a great role model. Not just college football, but all of football from the pee-wees to the pros need men like him.
Daniel Crowe I've met him my friend, back in 1997 at a banquet in Birmingham. Just an outstanding person, great speaker, and a phenomenal coach.

That's funny but damned true. How it still stands today is a mystery!
They don't make coaches like Stallings anymore! Class Act!
One of my freinds played under him,Michael Rodgers #52 on the championship team at linebacker
@@johnnypruitt2305 He was an incredible LB especially inside against the run. Didn't his brother play at auburn?
They don’t make many men like him anymore either.
Coach Gene Stallings as good a person and great coach as it gets. Thank you. Roll Tide. Also thank for your family sharing your time with us
Coach Stallings is a family friend, I have been fortunate to know him and his family. John Mark always had a smile and would squeeze you until you felt like a grape about to pop when he hugged you. They are good people.
TO THIS DAY HE IS STILL MY FAVORITE COACH OF ALL TIME. HE WAS A GREAT COACH HE BELIEVED LIKE I DO, RUN THE FOOTBALL, AND STOP THE RUN!!
I never tire of watching Bama beat Auburn. This was one of the better ones. I'm sure Auburn fans like watching Auburn beating Alabama just as much. Fortunately, I can watch more Bama wins than they can watch Auburn wins.

Eli Gold calls the final drive at Legion Field. Eli is the master.
Its gets me fired up just listening to Eli
okrajoe I'm like the female version of Eli cz I get really excited about my Bama football!!
I loved that old Eli. He now broadcasts one octave lower than he did back then. He now broadcasts in the same octave as his regular speaking voice. Was not the case back then.
Today is September 2, 2023…and Eli is BACK. I’ve missed hearing him. It’s so good to hear his voice again.
ROLL TIDE ROLL. 🐘🐘🐘
I still get chill bumps watching this ROLL TIDE 🐘
Freddie Kitchens brought me here....Go Browns
Hell yes, GO ROWNS!
coach stallings was and is first class. it aint no question.
I was at that game, sitting at the opposite end of the field from where Riddle scored -- just an amazing game; Legion Field always had a great atmosphere.
Eli Gold, a New York boy in Alabama? What a voice.
Ron Stokes voice of *Gold*
It took a few years but having Saban as coach finally got me over missing Coach Stallings. He was a class act and a great coach.

Coach stallings was 1st class. Its a shame they got rid of him
I love this man.God bless you,coach!

HC now what a beast
@@QUANTRELLBISHOP 💯💪😎
We used to call him Fat Freddie and Freddie stay out of the Kitchens back then before he was even fat lol. Kitchens to Malone.
Sure do miss him..... One of our best
Coach Stallings used to stay at my grandparents house when he was recruiting Cullman as an assistant under Bryant.
Proud of him. He is the model of what makes a great Man. On and off the field. Great Father
They didn't get rid of him. Behind-the-scenes politics forced him to resign.
yes he retired, however it was just as much them wanting him to leave. choach Stallings said it him self that he would have liked to had one more year.
Love you Brother Stallings
This is a touch off-topic, but I wish coaches still wore suits on the sidelines.
Altoclarinets I was thinking the same thing. They still do it in basketball
Wow, I was only 20 years old but I still remember this game. I couldn't tell who the player was that said get off Freddie Kitchens back baby, but that is funny! RTR!
+Brian Griggs That was receiver Michael Vaughn.
+RedElephantStampede Ok, I thought that was him. I sure hope we get past A&M Saturday.
+Brian Griggs Indeed, as do I my friend. I read that Kyle Field is now at 102,000 strong capacity. It's going to be a battle against the 12th man.
Love Coach Stallings!
Bebes was six years older than me, but our high schools were always in the same district. He played for the great Baltimore Colts receiver Raymond Berry's Dad at Paris. My cousin and I played for McKinney.
Once Alabama beat Miami in '92, The SEC became the conference to beat.
Bama stopped Miami's little dynasty. After getting whipped so bad Miami wasn't able to intimidate their opponents anymore
The kind of coach that survived Junction and quotes Isaac Newton. Between the two it's kind of all you really need to know.
Roll Tide Roll
@Thomas Evans - He really is but you would never know unless you pay attention as he is also a rather quiet, humble man, much like his mentor.

They left Riddle open on every play
This always reminds me of the last second screen pass to TJ Yeldon against LSU a few years ago

I forgot all about Riddle...beast!!
Roll Tide in 2020
Glad I got to see this, awesome video
So says the ghosts of Paul Bryant, Ralph Jordan, Pat Dye, and Gene Stallings - they, and I, couldn't agree more.....
He retired to spend more time with his son, who had down syndrome.
Who's the announcer in this clip? He did a good job not sounding cliché and predictable and "fake excited." Good upload.
That would be Eli Gold, voice of the Tide since 1989.
well I'm going to listen to this guy some more. I like his style. Go Bama. Roll Tide.
The famous Eli Gold.
KING KRUSH There was no "fake exicited" with Eli. The emotion was real.
IT SAYS IT IN THE TITLE
He was tough. I hope he get the OC job when BOB leaves.
The games where Auburn thinks they won and get crushed are the best.
Was Mac Jones there back then?
I miss Eli.

They'll going to buyout Gene Stallings three years remaining on his contract by December 31, 1999.
