You need two vents; one to near the bottom for cool air to go in and one higher up for hot air and moisture to escape. If you make the lower one wider, more cool air can get in, if you make the higher one wider, it might dry out faster.

We kept a similar barrel in the ground when I was growing up. It full of the carrots we grew each year that we retreived every few day for my mother's soups. We kept gunny sacks on top of them just under teh lid to keep them better insulated from the freezing temperatures throughout the winter months. This year we grew potatoes and onions, but the carrots did not germinate.

This is cool as long as it doesn't get flooded out.😍

That is a very good point. If there was too much water in the soil it would be a problem for sure.

I'm still getting a lot of moister so I'm not sure if the riser and hole were good ideas or not. Thanks for commenting and watching.

Don't the holes on the bottom let ground water back into it?

Thanks for the video! Which growing zone are you in?
I'd like to accomplish something similar for my zone 4 home here in Minnesota.

How long do potatoes last in there and do you do something to space them out?

You need one to bring in cool air as well. It should be close to the bottom inside.

I appreciate the comment. I'm not sure how we would do that. To where would it vent?

@@livewithinyourmeans One vents warm air to the outside...warm air rises....the other vent brings in cool air from outside...cool air drops.

How did you clean the inside of the barrels and what was in them originally?

I was told that these were food grade and did not have toxic stuff in them. I trusted the barrel company.

    O. K. You have your drum set up. You have you roots stored in it.
Question: Do you or Don't you insulate the out side when deep cold temps are o'night ?? If so what medium do you use ?? How do you make it stick to the outside and what thickness ??

Robert. I am learning about comments. I actually put straw on top.

      O. K. but the question is, what about the sides of the drum ??
Doesn't cold come through the steel and spoil / freeze your stored food ??
      Thanks for your reply.

@@robertgrey6101 Once I put the trash can in the ground I backfilled around it with the dirt I removed then as you can see I built a wooden box then used 1" insulation around it.

Yes, but I stored carrots to early a few weeks ago and they turned black. It was too warm. I stored potatoes, onions, and carrots last year. I just got more carrots. Thanks for your question and comments.

On a lot of video, they say not to put onions and potatoes in the same bucket for storage.

appreciate your comments, but I do keep them in separate sacks or containers within the barrel.

You can try it but it may be a bit warm. I stored carrots to early last month and they turned black. I'ld probably focus on planting and growing things with that moisture and sunshine. Thank you for watching and commenting. May God bless you.
