Haven't been struck by a movie like this in years, haunting in the sense I can't stop thinking about it. It was so subtle and psychological you couldn't even tell when you were being choked. Lovely to see your review pop up brilliant as always

Your comment about grief is so very incredibly spot on. When I discovered my father had passed and I was 24 and it just lost my mom at 22 and I remember being completely alone while waiting for family and my boyfriend(now husband who was out of town an hour away) to get there and the next day I was supposed to play in some softball game for work and for whatever reason I called my boss up and was because I would not be able to make it. I just sat there completely quiet and emotionless, even though I felt like my world was ending. The paramedics like one of them looked at me like I was crazy or something because I just sat there staring off into space I hate that so many people judge, especially with situations that involve extreme grief or stress, because everyone reacts differently. It took me two days to completely fall apart until then I was all business and basically numb. I was literally canceling his future doctor appointments for him and just all sorts of stupid stuff. I remember after leaving the funeral home like we had planned to go grocery shopping that day and my husband was taking us home and I remember insisting we go grocery shopping because it was like I was on a complete auto pilot. I just like that you address that. Grief and especially the situation that this family is in is so complex and people try to simplify it without understanding the true complexity
Lanthimos is one of my favorite current directors but this movie did leave me a bit cold compared to Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Favourite. Your review makes me want to revisit it ASAP.
I've been wondering when you'd get to Lanthimos. I'll be interested to hear what you think of his others too. The Lobster seems ripe for your analysis, and The Favourite is my second favorite film from last year, and could easily be in my top spot in any other year if it weren't for The House That Jack Built.

Nice to see you review this one, I'm a big fan of Lanthimos. He really builds worlds that are foreign to reality and they seem to exist in an unsettling, uncanny realm (The Favourite not so much, but it's still excellent). I agree with a lot of your points but I would disagree that Martin is representative of pure villainy. He certainly brings chaos to Steven's life, but not without reason. I found it interesting that you identified Colin Farrell's character as God-like in his role as a surgeon, which I hadn't originally considered. But I think the real God character is Martin. He's vengeful, wields supernatural power, and casts ultimate and apparently irreversible justice. Also, Nicole Kidman kissing his feet seems to be some sort of fearful reverence or respect. I don't think Martin's actions are evil for the sake of evil, I saw it more as psychopathic callousness in pursuing retribution. Whatever it is, it's definitely mythical and biblical in its nature and I don't think I fully understand it. I suppose that's what makes it such a great film. I only discovered your reviews recently and I really enjoy them. Please keep them coming. Thanks.

The score was also like freaky all the way through. So even though your like I don’t see anything to be scared of the music was telling you “I’m scary trust me”.
I think you should check out "It's Such a Beautiful Day", an independent animated film by Don Hertzfeldt. It's his firth feature-length animated film following lots of critically acclaimed shorts like "Rejected", and I think it needs to be watched at least once. It's absurdly hilarious and frighteningly tragic, and I would love hearing your thoughts on this!

The variable seems to be that he and Efthimis Filippou did not write the screenplay. I have watched, and appreciated, all of Lanthimos’ films, except Alps. That one is hard to come by.

Recently I've been rewatching some Lanthimos films and for this one especially I looked up a lot of reviews to hear other people's opinions about it. Your review was really the best I came across, I think you have a very good sense of the movie on a thematic level and also on the way the story was told in general and all the stylistic choices that were made. And you also really expressed your thoughts in a clear and interesting way, which for me it's always a difficult thing when taking about a movie (especially a movie like this one). I'll be sure to check out many more of your videos.
Honestly I got nothing out of this movie. Just miserable to watch and leaves you completely unsatisfied, wether intentional or not it was a chore to get through. Loved the Favorite though

I saw Dogtooth a few years ago and it fucking ruined me. It was at a time in my life where I was in a very dark/delusional state of mind and it affected me in a way that few other films have. Since then I’ve had no desire to see the director’s other films even though he is clearly an extremely talented (and effective) filmmaker.
I think Martin represents 'The Gods' - cold and indifferent, tormenting mortals for their own pleasure, seemingly without reason. We , as mortals, are powerless to do anything except live with it and accept it - something that is shown in the end scene.
Interesting movie. Kubrick feel to it for sure. The score was haunting. The music was haunting and I was like it’s telling me something is wrong but what? The dialogue was like one note. Comparing Martin to Norman Bates is a good comparison. It was hard for me to see everyone quickly buy into Martins powers. I first thought it was poison a way more logical reason than Martin is magically causing this pain. Good movie 🍿. I’m glad I got to see it. Showing on Netflix right now.

The scene where Nicole Kidman’s character chews out her husband reminds me so much of EWS. There’s a great moment where the camera lingers on her expression and she’s PISSED it’s awesome
Killing of a Sacred deer is probably my least favourite Lanthimos film because of how tonally derivative it is compared to Dogtooth which is just better in every way imo. Lobster and the Favourite are great. Great reviews as always
The "sleeping/anesthetized patient" fetish kind of hits close to home since that has happened to patients. I rarely know of doctors being punished for sexually abusing patients. And it is hard to prove or investigate because they are in an environment that worships the ground they walk on. And favored doctors, their reputation is too high for some to believe their victims. So not only is it simply about power and dominance but abuse of power. He committed an abuse of power by performing surgery under the influence of alcohol and received no punishment for his actions (prior to dealing with Martin).
Typically like this type of film, where interpretation is key and emotional logic is at play. But I hated Sacred Deer. Every objective criticism you mention, stating that it doesn't apply because of some inner logic that may or may not be there.... Those issues completely sank this movie for me. Lazy writing meant to be subjectively interpreted, that has the viewer doing all the work of imagining the plot so as not to put any demands on the writers themselves. The villain describes what is going to happen to the family, and he makes these things happen, how?... The occult? Biological weapon? Magic? There's nothing. No explanation, no reason. It's like a guy got the idea to make a joke film and framed it in the aesthetics of Kubrick and Lynch, forgetting to add meat to the skeleton.

If a movie is going to be deliberately disturbing and uncomfortable, it better be really good and make up for it somewhere. I like the movie's point that suburban perfection is paper thin and could easily implode into barbarism. I really liked the way you described Martin. How he could go from seeming almost innocent and retarded to being a godlike juggernaut. Thought-provoking.

Barry Keoughan is going to be an all time great. Between this, The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, he is one you can’t take your eyes off of.

The most scary thing in this utter apex of cinema is an unexplained lisp. Keoghan was flawless, which is a feat even for legendary actors.
