Between you guys and Trovarion and several other creators on UA-cam, I have seen so many complaints about Golden Daemon not having creative types in charge of the voting. This is superb! I hope you get the turnout you want.
Hope you get a great turnout and look forward to seeing what the entries are like. I think it's great that the mini-painting community has reached a size that it can take on its own event structuring and out of the hands of big plastic.
Please please make sure to take high quality photos of all entrees/nominations/winners for the years to come. And then ether publish a book about them or somewhere we can awe in their mini glory. It's a literal shame golden demon doesn't publish its own book of high quality photos taken.
I don't think I registered for something so fast before. So excited for this and so nice to see that essentially the community is making an open competition for the community! Awesome job boys!
Excellent initiative! I've painted for years and never entered in a competition. I guess I never had the heart for it. I'll make it my new year resolution to enter my first competition: this one.
Very exciting. How many photos can (should) be submitted per miniature entry? It would also be helpful to have some minimum guidelines for photo quality (size / resolution). Thanks.
This is going to be a great idea brought to life. Legendary judges to boot. I am very new to hobby crafting stuff and almost considered putting something in just for the hilarious feedback from you both. Ozzies rock.
@@squidlybits1985 no, thats not what iam trying to say, ofc they deserve any attention and prestige they could get from this event and tahts cool, but they probably wont need your prizes, lower ranks probably more, so its kind of wasted in my opinion. its like winning a magic tournament and getting the cards you already played.
Haha nice, i just entered the centerpiece of my first ever Black templars army. Given im only at 1000p so far and havent painted for very long, its still fun to be part of this! THANKS GUYS! :D
Hey Emil it would be great if you guys update how to take photos of your minitures guide video. 'cuz it would make a big difference. It not just painting minis competition but how to take good photos of them. Ty in forward. Best of luck to everyone who gonna participate! BY
I’m still super new to painting, and barely know what I’m doing, so this doesn’t affect me at all. That said, being able to hype up the talents outside of the warhammer lenses is baller as hell, and I’m all about it.
Hey ! Great initiative, as an intermediate painter myself I am probably going to enter. One question though, since it's images only and not all of us are experienced taking pictures I think it good be great if you guys could give us advice on what to use to take pictures and how to set up the lighting, all of that... I only have my phone and I don't have a dedicated setup to take pictures and when I take pictures I am always disapointed with the result cause I can't see all the details and the lighting is off. Anyway, hope you'll see the comment. Great as always!
Superb idea/ initiative! For me this year will not be happening since I just received my paint sets and am completely new to the tabletop/mini world (painting included) so will have to start from scratch (all the vids help though with showing techniques etc.). So next year seems like a better option for myself. 😊
I honestly have no idea where to put myself for skill level. I think I'm OK, have won golds in my local competitions (Open Judging), but I don't think I'm at the skill level of Master. Can an entry be moved from Standard to Master if the judges deem so? I feel like a few more guidelines should be added; for example, but not limited to: can a model can be moved up a skill level but not down, photo size, recommended photo size, how many photos, what photos are required, etc etc.
This sounds great! ... I only started really painting Minis like approx. 6 Months ago but ... well its a challange I will try to take and see where it takes me.
Would be nice to enter, but I only recently started painting :D Thanks for the video guys, cant wait to see what happens with the squidmar open. P.S. got all 3 of your paint sets and I am truly loving them :)
Might enter this competion as my first competition ever. After reading the rules and everything I take it I can kitbash/convert what ever I want, even with 3d printed bits, parts? Good luck to all! /swedeminis
Oh man, this being a yearly occurence would be sweet! We could start prepping way earlier in anticipation. Either way, I for one will try my best in the two month time frame we've got.
I love it! Any time you can get more people exposed to awesome painting is great! Let's see if some hidden demons are out there with insane skill. I know they are hiding in the shadows, waiting for their moment to shine. More competition is great for everyone. Painting is fun.
There’s a method (I think is called 'Elo rating system'? or 'pairwise comparison') for ranking or sorting that I believe would work perfectly in a painting competition: referees randomly select two entries at a time, compare them, and decide which one is better, recording their choice. This process can be repeated by different referees, or even by the public. It doesn’t matter if the same pair is evaluated multiple times or if not every possible pair is compared. With a critical mass of comparisons is enough. At the end of the process, there’s an algorithm that takes all the pairwise comparisons and generates an objective ranking for all the entries. It's used in chees, for instance.
This would be insanely interesting to run alongside the usual judging. Get the viewers to pick best between two and see what the result is. Would be relatively easy to setup as well, and those with larger viewer base couldn't over leverage it if you limit things to a degree. You can do three pairs a day for a week. With enough entries there is no guarantee your patrons paintjobs would even appear in your pairs.
This is actually a really good idea, I'd love to see it used at a painting comp. And it could really generate some audience participation over the course of a day or a weekend.
I probably won’t enter as I just started the hobby, but this seems great! If this continues to be a yearly competition I’m sure I’ll have an entry I’m proud of to enter.
You should enter either way, your placement may help you grow. It definitely helped me when I entered gundam builder World Cup when I started gunpla. I even got first place in my division at the store it was held at this year
Guys!!!!!!! I have never seen a grimdark category in any of the painting competitions. The grimdark painters who don’t paint eavy metal style always get pushed to the back of the line. I love the grimdark painters and I think they need some spotlight on em! Just saying I bet they would line up in droves and bring the pain.
I love this idea I always wanted to know where I stand with my painting skills. I don't really need the prizes. And my question: is this a thing that will happens often? I have this custom mini that I'm making but with the time it took to get it to where it is now. He's not going to make it on time
A competition has been needed for a long time where they will evaluate my painting skills, and not how much the miniature looks like what is painted in GW.
Sounds so cool, u guys are amazing! And specs to the picture? So in terms of the background or perspective. Multipictures packen in one grest joggen? Closeups or something? I mein Same Miniaturen looks different with Black or White background😅
What are the does and don't when it comes to pictures? Should the mini be shown all the way around, or just from its "moneyshot"angle/front? Is there a golden number of pictures to aim for and, if several, should they be combined into one file in some way? What about closeups? XD As you can hear, i've never participated in this kind of event before.
Awesome!!! Best luck everyone, be the first to win the Golden Cookie. New category: best 3 minute painting instructional video of your miniature. Win a cookie and feed Squidmar more content!😅🎉❤
Seeing as there is a "Best of Sona" category, will you restock your store or start selling stl files? inb4 next video is about how their new minis are ready
EXCITING ! Now that is fun. I’m considering entering the Masters category just for the honors, what do you think ? Tbf I’m not a beginner but not a master at all Thank you for your commitment to the community
I'm in the same boat, painted for a few years, I think I'm passed tabletop standard but no where near golden demon standard. So enter master and get destroyed or enter beginner and make it unfair for the real beginners?
Keep it up! Genuine question about this type of events. Why not a category where is asked to paint a particular model and all entries are the same model? Good job and good luck to everyone!!
Because people would need to get out of their way to procure said model - if it's a 3D print, depending on size, might be quite costly; then comes issue with quality coming from different printing farms; if it's a commercial model, how do you decide on one, so general public wants to paint it? And again, if it's WH mini, it will be surely 20$+, so again, extra costs for no reason.
Killer news boys. Nice to see you guys doing this and taking some of the gut ache away from GD ( that whole ego trip and atmosphere really is alienating) and making it for the community (sorry, I hate that friggin' term, but it applies too well). Having thing open and loose like Monte is absolutely the way to go. Now to get fully moved into my new house and get my damn studio built out.... x
I'm so hyped about this, but I *very* much don't know which category to enter. I fully consider myself an intermediate painter... but I've got one particular army paint scheme that's very high concept, refined, and well executed - a solid cut above my normal stuff. I plan to enter one of said paint scheme. Which do I enter? Help!
I’ve never actually fully finished a single mini since I stared a couple years ago, and I’ve been trying to squeeze some painting in between work and projects around the house. This is the motivation I needed to paint one through to completion. I definitely want to enter! Will there be any kind of constructive feedback provided for entries?
Would a model like Volga Belladamma from Soulblight Gravelords, on a small plinth and a backdrop be a single or large? It is a 60mm base, but is still just a rider on a wolf?
You also need a Squidmar Closed. Where the judges compete with their minis and all the entrants in the Squidmar Open get a vote each.
Don't forget the Squidmar slightly adjar. Where everyone votes on an empty display case.
This would be neat
Ok, I’ll give it a try. Never been in a painting competition but having my minis laughed at by these legendary artists will be an honor
If you’re not first, your last!
Yea, I’m totally in the same boat. But, if I’m going to get critiques, it may as well be from some of the best!!
Yeah, I feel about the same. I wouldn't mind some critiques.
Between you guys and Trovarion and several other creators on UA-cam, I have seen so many complaints about Golden Daemon not having creative types in charge of the voting. This is superb! I hope you get the turnout you want.
I hope the trophy is a giant golden cookie!
Maybe not for this year, but a youngbloods category would be a great addition in the future. Inspire and support the new kids coming through.
Honestly bust should be it’s own category because busts are large but usually don’t need a base besides a plinth.
Hope you get a great turnout and look forward to seeing what the entries are like. I think it's great that the mini-painting community has reached a size that it can take on its own event structuring and out of the hands of big plastic.

Ohw yes please!
I hope there is some sort of verification of the winner--like maybe a video call to see the mini in the person's hand.
Absolutely stacked panel of judges holy crap! Amazing thing you're doing for the community.
Good luck and happy painting to all!
I love how you guys build culture and community!
Superb idea and is super accessible for all interested. Thank you for organising.
Please make this an irl event in the future! Sweden has so many amazing painter yet for some frikkin reason we dont have a big painting competition

Nice idea. I really like the path and how your career grows up.
This is exciting! I just received all 3 paint sets 2 days ago. Will definitely be using them for this competition
I love that you have beginner levels. Because everything else can seem so daunting and offputting for a newcomer to the hobby. Awesome choice.
They literally don't have one - MPO ran by Cult of Paint has Beginner, Standard and Master level categories.
@@Elfhelm I must have misheard.
Now this I like! I really hope it goes well!!!
