      I'm so glad this helped, Bobby! I agree- it's hard to keep everything straight during March (and April) with so much going on and the overlap between the cool season stuff going into the garden and the warm season stuff that can be started indoors. Best wishes for a wonderful garden this year & happy 1st day of Spring!

    I canned 21 jars of potatoes that were planted in a raised bed the previous year in early November, I harvested them in late summer the following year, as long as the potatoes are in well drained soil they will be fine, no waiting for the ground to be worked come St. Patrick's day.

      Hi Tammy- thank you! I'm in midwestern Ohio and if your forecast is like mine for the next week or so, the daytime temps are barely getting above freezing. I'm going to wait till there's a stretch of days in the upper 40s to 50s to seed things like peas & carrots. Otherwise they tend to just sit in the ground, and possibly rot. That being said- I've had better luck with presprouting peas when it's cold like this versus just sowing them directly. Carrots can actually be pregermed too- it's just more tedious.

    Very good timing, As my seeding skills I don't trust so I started peppers and tomatoes a few weeks ago and most have germination and a few second set of leaves.
    QUESTION? Does B.t. kill all micorizomes as I'm adding B.t to all my watering for my seedlings.
    Nematodes would that be safer?

      I hope you are having some enjoyable weather in your neck of the woods, John!
      With the Bt, I don't typically water with it, but spray it directly on my plants. It may depend on the specific Bt product you're using, but with the product I use it would not be effective to water with it, as the caterpillars need to eat the leaves which have been coated with the spray in order for it to kill them.

      I don’t typically. I’ve had my potato foliage hit with heavy frost- it turns black and dies, but sprouts right back out when temps warm. With my root crops like beets and carrots- if we get a really cold snap (like 20F or below) and the greens are up a few inches I might cover them just to be on the safe side. But I’ve also had good luck just pushing some leaf mulch up around the plants. They are incredibly cold tolerant!

      I use insect netting and heavy weight frost cloth from this company: www.gardenport.com/. The peas are blue because unfortunately they were treated. Not my choice- but I trial seed and sometimes am stuck with the seed that is sent to me.

    Jenna, currently watching your March issue. It is March 31 and i want to plant some of the plants you mention, however the nursery i frequent says the soil should be at least 50 degrees. what do you think?

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      Hmmm… maybe they are using an average minimum across all veggies? In reality, the minimum soil temp for germination to occur varies widely by crop- things like lettuce can germinate at 35-40, while warm season crops typically need at least 50-60F. Now- that 35 degrees isn’t optimal, and germination will take longer to occur, but they can still germinate. Check out this chart for a full list of temps: extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/techniques/soil-temperature-conditions-vegetable-seed-germination

    Hi Jenna! I had a question. If I don't have grow covers should I wait to sow and transplant my onions, brassicas and leafy greens until it's a little closer to the spring? I do have a large tarp but it's not clear. It's more translucent. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!

    Start onion seed in February. Plant the onion starts in late March when the ground can be worked. Start peppers in March indoors. Start tomatoes indoors on April 1st.

      For my growing area, I actually have better results starting bulb onion seed at the very beginning of January. I start green onions or scallions indoors in February or direct sow outdoors in March

    It's late March and I'm in Southwest PA, can I still do Broccoli and cold crops?

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      Ideally, I'd look for transplants if starting at this point in the season.
      If you are starting from seed, you'd be transplanting around mid-May and the plants would be growing and maturing during the hotter part of the summer. This can lead to stress issues- -such as buttoning and bolting or not forming heads at all. If you luck out and get a nice cool summer, these crops may be just fine... but I know that doesn't happen for me! You could also look at starting seeds indoors for these crops in early to mid July for a fall harvest.
