In Saudi Arabia the Mutawa (religious police) drive around looking at satellite dishes to ensure they're all pointed at the correct Arabsat. Of course just about everyone with a satellite dish has at least two, one that isn''t visible from the street...
Sounds like you were there around the late 80s - late 90s. I can't remember the last time I saw a satellite. The internet replaced pretty much all traditional media. To clarify, Mutawa means a religious person and can sometimes be used to describe a bearded man. Also, there were never a "religious police". There is the "General Presidency of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice". The name explains there job. They are there to "Promote" and "Prevent" by going to public places to give advice and report any violations to the police. However, they were given free rein. They acted as the policemen, the judges, the executioners and they had the power to stop, arrest, ID etc. In 2016, the Saudi Council of Ministers significantly restricted there power (turned it back to normal really) and clearly set the boundaries and regulated their activities.

Right on, Gabe! I had a FTA huge antenna 📡 I left it with my wife's Dad when I moved. I miss working with my antennas and my satellite dish. Now I get to do that when I get old, which is not very far away. 🤙🏼
You know I'm not even that into satellites. I helped my neighbor set up his FTA dish when I lived in Alaska. Then we piped it out to my cabin. I'm definitely interested enough to watch you fool around with them though. It's always been amazing to me that you can grab radio signals from space.
Never a waste of time Gabe 👍 your vids are always awesome 🙂 it was worth it just to see Saudi wheel of fortune 😅 we are truly in the golden age of television 😂
No apologies necessary. I appreciate that you defined in the title of the video that you failed to find a signal. This set expectations for the audience. I think your videos are very entertaining. I’m sticking around for the future.
Hey, at least the construction noises confirmed that I have pretty good headphones, I thought the scraping noise was coming from my noisy neighbor's apartment and was about to go downstairs and complain until I realized it was the video, lol.
putting an offset ku lnb inside c-band scalar rings, and then not putting it at the focal point is going to be way worse than the dish, which also isn't great. You can't just take LNBs designed for offset dishes of a certain f/d ratio and jam them into c-band scalar rings and expect good results. It does appear that it works well enough though, just that the signal he's looking for is gone (I just checked myself - there's no signal at 12115 V anymore - that mux is gone - knapsack used to be on 12177V a couple of years ago, but it's not in that mux anymore - I checked all of the muxes on G19, it's not anywhere - go to their webpage, it's fany and flashy, but has zero useful information - typical "charity / non-proffit" that has a flashy webpage, but doesn't actually do anything, and whose sole purpose is to take grant money and pay the people running the charity
@@gorak9000 Yes, I was going to mention that Ku LNBFs aren't well-optimized for the deeper prime-focus dishes that were typical for C-band. Doesn't mean they won't work, just means that they'll only be illuminating part of the dish, which may also mean adjusting the focus a bit. Like I said, there's excess aperture there, so a "casual" installation is much more likely to work adequately because of that. I guess my not-for-profit must be atypical. None of our folks are paid, and the money we bring in (very little) goes directly to supporting our educational mandate, and inevitable operating costs. So, try not to paint with such a large brush......
The problem with the 'bypass censorship' idea, imo - as nice as it was - is that most people in that situation probably could not afford a dish and the box in the first place. And if a community bought that stuff? Someone would probably rat on them to the powers that be. ☮
One of these days I'll get my small ku setup back up. One of these days. You are correct though. 20 years ago it was worth it. Now it isn't. Still have a good collection of stuff.

Doing something like this over shortwave would be much safer for clandestine radio receiving. VOA does put out a shortwave radiogram. I think fldigi could potentially do this. Obviously audio methods would be slow, but if someone let's say had a kiwix instance running they could recieve updates without needing to download from the start?! Interesting video!
In the DPRK (north korea) they shut off the power randomly to search dvd players. Kinda hard to eject and hide it. The consequences are dire for having almost any media ever made except for their approved programming.
RTP is the international channel from Portugal. New television in Europe have four way to get television, analogue, DVB-T, DVB-T2 (antenna), DVB-C (cable). Maybe that is not how it works in United States. I did also search for this toosheh and I didn't find anything. I think this might have ended because of Starlink, as many are smuggling those into countries with strong censorship laws on media and the internet to get around that.
You are using a prime focus dish with a LNB that is mend for offset dishes. The LNB only sees part of the dish because of that. Also RTP is portugese TV .
Someone gave it to me with some repairs needed. I don't see them too often, C-Band was big in the 80s but not really used much now, so nobody makes them for retail sale. There are some specialty websites that make them for ham radio but they're $$$$

The efficiency of your foldable dish is going to be poor at 12GHz, but you have so much excess aperture, it likely doesn't matter...
