#TEAM RAY!! And I'll say it again!! His character develop during the manga is amazing! The way he cares, worries and protect Emma I find it extremely wholesome as well and that's why I shipped them really hard overall the way I see it I thought he was a cold characters but during the arcs his character develop change I think it's all thanks to Emma. Their relationship in the manga during the two year I find extremely cute for their moments together.
#TeamRay !! During the 1st arc I didn't particularly ship anyone (though Ray was my fav character), and I thought Norman loving Emma was cute, but didn't feel any romantic vibes coming from her, so I didn't support the ship. Then, *SPOILERS COMING* After the escape, over the chapters I noticed more and more how close Emma and Ray are and what awesome complicity they have, and though there's no romantic tension, I just think they'd fit incredibly well with one another. They'd be the ULTIMATE POWER COUPLE. Not to mention it would be a nice twist to have the girl end with a totally different guy from the one who was introduced as a potential love interest at first. Emma and Ray feels natural to me, precisely because you don't see it happening. As things are now (ch. 129) it's hard to tell. I would love to see a Ray x Emma couple in the future since they share so much and have become so close. And I can't picture Emma with Norman, because they've taken such different paths and have grown too different (not to mention I'm getting vibes Norman is going to die soon from the experiments done on him... but if the authors want to make a Norman x Emma couple canon, they will find a way to cure Norman). I really want to believe in a Ray x Emma couple as they get so many cute interactions and it's so natural and organic, but the authors are playing with the ambiguity - you could argue it's just a very close friendship or a sibling kind of relationship, even though the "Whatever path you choose, I'll lend you my shoulder" line in Ch. 123 had me like IF THIS AIN'T ROMANCE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. Plus there's some weird ambiguity between Ray and Anna (which I'm really not a fan of, because I find Anna boring, sorry, and also she's a side character and I'm outraged at the idea of my golden boy Ray ending with a side character. He needs an adventurer, someone who can hold her own and defend herself, like Emma. Same for Emma, she needs and adventurer, and as badass as Norman can be, he just isn't that). Conversely, interactions between Emma and Norman happen rarely, but they get bigger moments as they get full-length panels and all... which makes me think the authors may be favouring that ship in the end. But to be honest, for me it feels rather forced. At this point in the story, they don't have much in common except for their childhood together. And even in the first arc, even though Norman is a sweetie, his relationship to Emma feels a bit like that of a parent to a child (admiring her spontaneity, yet keeping most of the plan-making to himself, as if only he could handle it). Whereas Ray acted superior at first, but he gradually stopped teasing Emma and calling her an idiot (an age-old shoujo trope...) to acknowledge her as an equal and even follow her ideals. It was a brilliant decision not to define her through romance, we've had too many heroines defined only by that! Maybe they'll make a epilogue where they have grown to be adults and we'll get to see who ended up with who :)

***SPOILER WARNING*** . . . . . . As much as I love Norman in the first arc, I feel like he changed too much since leaving Grace Field. When he had revealed his plan, I was personally okay with it due to how deadly they are, but then Emma felt more empathetic towards them since they all have families. It really hurts that my favourite of the three had to become so different than he was back then, and how he's following logic more than empathy. It also really hurts that we didn't get to see much of his side of the story for so long (although I can definitely understand why it was done that way) and so since he has been away from Emma and Ray for so long it feels like his bond with them has slowly faded away, like it's still there but it's not as strong as it used to be. So unless they're able to make Norman somehow get close with his two childhood friends, I don't see EmmaNorman happening, as sad as it may be. Ray on the other hand, he has grown so much over the last two years, and I appreciate how he changed from being reserved and lowkey unapproachable to more like a big brother figure for all of the younger children. As for him and Emma, even though it's not forced, which I like, I can honestly see them being a great couple in the end, and I like how even though he agrees with Norman's plan, he's still willing to help Emma make her plan succeed, which is really sweet. Plus there's something about them that just seems to click between them: this whole ordeal made them stronger together. So even though Norman is my favourite, despite what happened to him, I'm gonna have to go with #TeamRay for this one. Unless they can develop Norman a bit more since I really feel like he could use it due to his absence and his personality change coming almost so suddenly, I feel like EmmaRay is the better ship. I'm so sorry if this post was long I might've gotten carried away ^-^'
Norman is still the same Norman as before, nothing changed! He still smiles around his old family, adores the kids, makes sly jokes and acts cocky about his plans. He still very weak, and he still likes Emma a lot. But he's also a human, it's natural that even the level headed person like Norman can feel ticked if the person whose wish he worked so hard to fulfill, returned after two years and made a new demand that completely contradicts his plan, and at such a time when he can't return. She even gave him a guilt trip with the hug. It's natural for him to want to kill a demon, every cattle children is supposed to share the sentiment. But Emma is Emma. Her heart is bigger than anyone and she's made him think about empathizing with them. But If he changed his plan immediately, that would make him a very shallow person. He always preferred logic over empathy but he admired Emma's viewpoint, that's why he decided to go with Emma's plan in GF house. He thinks the plan was successful because everyone escaped. But in reality everyone DIDN'T, Norman himself couldn't escape. He sees his plan as a success if everyone other than himself is saved. Right now it's the same, he wants to create a bright future for his family and he is willing to kill his heart for it. That's why Emma is hurrying, she has to make him realize his wellbeing matters. If anything, Norman has more kindness and empathy than before: he genuinely wants to save everyone and isn't doing it just because the girl he likes said so. The only reason he acts cold around his squad is to avoid showing signs of weakness. That would make them want to take advantage of him, and if they disobey him his life will be in danger. Also, he's definitely not a villain. Not even close. Norman's character development arc was lacking in the series and now we're finally here. Remember how fantastic Ray's was? Shirai sensei won't disappoint this time, either. I'm sure Norman will do wonderful things that will make us want to praise him endlessly.. After all he's a very popular and beloved character and he's back after a long time. He's a very good boy at heart.

I don't think Norman needs developing, because his current behavior isn't a flaw, exactly. It's his moral compass, and he's not wrong for wanting to kill human-eating creatures to protect humans. That being said, neither is Emma wrong in her approach. They simply have drastically different view points. He needed to change, he needs to be an adult, and it's not his fault, and it does NOT makes him a bad person. But it does makes him different.

I think I said it (maybe somewhere else) but, the only thing that mostly changed about him is that he has learned to value his opinions and voice it in front of Emma. And he doesn't always smile anymore. But as you said, that came with his responsibility. I'm convinced he'll pretty much be the same as always when he's free from his responsibilities; hence I said he didn't change (because his natural behavior seems to be what fandom is concerned about) And he still needs character development, IMO.. because he tends to see himself as a tool to attain other's happiness. He doesn't have any self love, he shuts off his feeling under a smile or a cold face, and he never shows any sign of weakness in front of others. He thinks he can take a lot more than he actually can, and it's going to bite him back. He had this traits from the beginning and it doesn't go with the story's theme of friendship and camaraderie. The genocidal route is the most logical solution but it can change him completely in a bad way yet he doesn't care ("I'll be a god or a demon if I have to"). If he is to be brought back to the trio, he needs to let go of these few negative traits which was once buried and now exposed. At least that's my take on his character.
@@1000SunnyGo In my opinion, one of the great things about this series is the lack of black and white morals. I like the fact Norman is in a morally gray area, and I personally don't think he needs to embody camaraderie and friendship the same way Emma does. It seems to me his current values are just part of his personality, and many fans and readers agree with his reasoning strongly. He's a rational voice to oppose Emma's sentimentality. Maybe because I see his current behavior as just part of his development, it seems like a completely different development would be a bit unnecessary. I can see it's a shounen jump series and Norman might just learn to be more idealistic or empathetic towards monsters. But I enjoy he opposes Emma right now, it fits his current development. It might just be my point of view, but Norman isn't hiding a sweet demeanor under his boss attitude. He is genuinely interested in Mass murdering the monsters, seems to actually despise them and can be incredibly calculating even when it comes to killing. He still retains niceness and kindness, and empathy towards other humans, but when it comes to monsters... So far, he's stone cold. That's not the same as always, because as much as he wanted to survive at first, he hadn't had the lab experience, he hadn't met those other kids and teenagers who hated monsters most of all. I don't think he's being irrational like some of them, but I do think he can relate to their experience more than Emma's right now, since he had the same experience himself. In my opinion if he had ran way with Ray and Emma, met musica in person and grown up in the bunker, perhaps he wouldn't have the goals he has. Well, that was my way to view it.

I think the friendship and camaraderie theme applies to Norman just as much! In fact, TPN embodies the WSJ theme of "friendship, effort, victory". Shirai sensei confirms it, and it shows almost in all color spreads. Norman dislikes being alone (from his old family, specifically) and he called his current situation a "burden". Maybe he particularly felt the burden after the argument. Upon realizing he was opposing Emma's ideals he seemed frustrated and even guilty when Emma pointed out that, while he is making the rational choice, subconsciously his own hatred towards the demons and the system is playing a role. Just in case the demon annihilation is successful it's possible that Norman won't be able to return to his family. As a person he will change and will start believing the choices he makes are absolute. Being a shounen mangaka, I think the author will favor Emma's ideals and if she says she wants to save Norman from "killing his heart"-that is what's happening and she WILL succeed (although I don't think Norman's plan will fail completely) Interestingly, Norman seemed to be okay with killing someone from the first arc- he had a content and cold smile when he confirmed it's possible to ambush and kill Krone (and Isabella). The stone cold attitude towards enemies was there from the start, his Lambda (and post-Lambda) experience just fueled it. So I'd call the current Norman a result of "character progression/growth" than "character development". I'm not sure where his development will go but I'm sure something is underway, and it's going to be spectacular.
Norman is unironically the best thing in tpn manga right now imo. It's similar to Ray situation, give 'em 15 or 20 more chapters and people will actually start understanding Norman and hop on the Norman train! (o˘◡˘o)

Im #teamNorman As a manga reader, although Ray and Emma have developed together I can only see them as siblings and I see nothing romantic. Just pure siblings that care about eachother. But with Norman and Emma, I feel like they can actually grow to have more of a romantic chemistry together. I love Ray but I can't see him with Emma yet unless something ACTUALLY romantic happens.

This is year old, but I’m still #TeamNorman. Here’s why:Although Norman has changed severely in the manga he did that for Emma and for the cattle children. Just cause he didn’t agree with Emma’s plans doesn’t mean he is entirely against her. As for Ray, they seem to have a more sibling relationship to me the I simply cannot look past. Personally when Norman admitted his feelings I felt as if it was endgame. Ray wouldn’t necessarily steal his best friend’s girl.
Fair enough but I don’t get why Noremma shippers are always like “Ray and Emma have a sibling relationship, Norman said he liked Emma”. The like/love he states could very well just be as siblings.
I'm #teamnorman because whenever he's on screen, something is definitely happening. I see lots of RayEmma shippers and I feel so confused. I, for the life of me, can't ship Ray and Emma. I can ship Norman with Ray and Emma but just. Everything about Ray and Emma screams to me siblings. I say that because their relationship mirrors my own relationship with my brother. I've tried and tried looking at them in a romantic light, but my mind just sees siblings.
But so it seems that the manga readers started to prefer Ray-Emma due to the proceeding storyline, I've yet to read the manga so I still prefer Norman-Emma ship.

As much as I love Norman in the first arc, I feel like he changed too much since leaving Grace Field. When he had revealed his plan, I was personally okay with it due to how deadly they are, but then Emma felt more empathetic towards them since they all have families. It really hurts that my favourite of the three had to become so different than he was back then, and how he's following logic more than empathy. It also really hurts that we didn't get to see much of his side of the story for so long (although I can definitely understand why it was done that way) and so since he has been away from Emma and Ray for so long it feels like his bond with them has slowly faded away, like it's still there but it's not as strong as it used to be. So unless they're able to make Norman somehow get close with his two childhood friends, I don't see EmmaNorman happening, as sad as it may be.
Ray on the other hand, he has grown so much over the last two years, and I appreciate how he changed from being reserved and lowkey unapproachable to more like a big brother figure for all of the younger children. As for him and Emma, even though it's not forced, which I like, I can honestly see them being a great couple in the end, and I like how even though he agrees with Norman's plan, he's still willing to help Emma make her plan succeed, which is really sweet. Plus there's something about them that just seems to click between them: this whole ordeal made them stronger together.
So even though Norman is my favourite, despite what happened to him, I'm gonna have to go with #TeamRay for this one. Unless they can develop Norman a bit more since I really feel like he could use it due to his absence and his personality change coming almost so suddenly, I feel like EmmaRay is the better ship.

Norman is still the same Norman as before, nothing changed! He still smiles around his old family, adores the kids, makes sly jokes and acts cocky about his plans. He still very weak, and he still likes Emma a lot.
But he's also a human, it's natural that even the level headed person like Norman can feel ticked if the person whose wish he worked so hard to fulfill, returned after two years and made a new demand that completely contradicts his plan, and at such a time when he can't return. She even gave him a guilt trip with the hug.
It's natural for him to want to kill a demon, every cattle children is supposed to share the sentiment. But Emma is Emma. Her heart is bigger than anyone and she's made him think about empathizing with them. But If he changed his plan immediately, that would make him a very shallow person.
He always preferred logic over empathy but he admired Emma's viewpoint, that's why he decided to go with Emma's plan in GF house. He thinks the plan was successful because everyone escaped. But in reality everyone DIDN'T, Norman himself couldn't escape. He sees his plan as a success if everyone other than himself is saved. Right now it's the same, he wants to create a bright future for his family and he is willing to kill his heart for it. That's why Emma is hurrying, she has to make him realize his wellbeing matters.
If anything, Norman has more kindness and empathy than before: he genuinely wants to save everyone and isn't doing it just because the girl he likes said so. The only reason he acts cold around his squad is to avoid showing signs of weakness. That would make them want to take advantage of him, and if they disobey him his life will be in danger.
Also, he's definitely not a villain. Not even close.
Norman's character development arc was lacking in the series and now we're finally here. Remember how fantastic Ray's was? Shirai sensei won't disappoint this time, either. I'm sure Norman will do wonderful things that will make us want to praise him endlessly.. After all he's a very popular and beloved character and he's back after a long time. He's a very good boy at heart.

I don't think Norman needs developing, because his current behavior isn't a flaw, exactly. It's his moral compass, and he's not wrong for wanting to kill human-eating creatures to protect humans. That being said, neither is Emma wrong in her approach. They simply have drastically different view points.
He needed to change, he needs to be an adult, and it's not his fault, and it does NOT makes him a bad person.
But it does makes him different.
@@luluanthem His viewpoints were always different from Emma's, but he admired her and wanted to be like her. I think I said it (maybe somewhere else) but, the only thing that mostly changed about him is that he has learned to value his opinions and voice it in front of Emma. And he doesn't always smile anymore. But as you said, that came with his responsibility. I'm convinced he'll pretty much be the same as always when he's free from his responsibilities; hence I said he didn't change (because his natural behavior seems to be what fandom is concerned about)
And he still needs character development, IMO.. because he tends to see himself as a tool to attain other's happiness. He doesn't have any self love, he shuts off his feeling under a smile or a cold face, and he never shows any sign of weakness in front of others. He thinks he can take a lot more than he actually can, and it's going to bite him back. He had this traits from the beginning and it doesn't go with the story's theme of friendship and camaraderie. The genocidal route is the most logical solution but it can change him completely in a bad way yet he doesn't care ("I'll be a god or a demon if I have to"). If he is to be brought back to the trio, he needs to let go of these few negative traits which was once buried and now exposed. At least that's my take on his character.
@@1000SunnyGo In my opinion, one of the great things about this series is the lack of black and white morals. I like the fact Norman is in a morally gray area, and I personally don't think he needs to embody camaraderie and friendship the same way Emma does.
It seems to me his current values are just part of his personality, and many fans and readers agree with his reasoning strongly. He's a rational voice to oppose Emma's sentimentality.
Maybe because I see his current behavior as just part of his development, it seems like a completely different development would be a bit unnecessary.
I can see it's a shounen jump series and Norman might just learn to be more idealistic or empathetic towards monsters. But I enjoy he opposes Emma right now, it fits his current development.
It might just be my point of view, but Norman isn't hiding a sweet demeanor under his boss attitude. He is genuinely interested in Mass murdering the monsters, seems to actually despise them and can be incredibly calculating even when it comes to killing. He still retains niceness and kindness, and empathy towards other humans, but when it comes to monsters... So far, he's stone cold.
That's not the same as always, because as much as he wanted to survive at first, he hadn't had the lab experience, he hadn't met those other kids and teenagers who hated monsters most of all. I don't think he's being irrational like some of them, but I do think he can relate to their experience more than Emma's right now, since he had the same experience himself.
In my opinion if he had ran way with Ray and Emma, met musica in person and grown up in the bunker, perhaps he wouldn't have the goals he has.

I think the friendship and camaraderie theme applies to Norman just as much! In fact, TPN embodies the WSJ theme of "friendship, effort, victory". Shirai sensei confirms it, and it shows almost in all color spreads. Norman dislikes being alone (from his old family, specifically) and he called his current situation a "burden". Maybe he particularly felt the burden after the argument. Upon realizing he was opposing Emma's ideals he seemed frustrated and even guilty when Emma pointed out that, while he is making the rational choice, subconsciously his own hatred towards the demons and the system is playing a role. Just in case the demon annihilation is successful it's possible that Norman won't be able to return to his family. As a person he will change and will start believing the choices he makes are absolute. Being a shounen mangaka, I think the author will favor Emma's ideals and if she says she wants to save Norman from "killing his heart"-that is what's happening and she WILL succeed (although I don't think Norman's plan will fail completely)
Interestingly, Norman seemed to be okay with killing someone from the first arc- he had a content and cold smile when he confirmed it's possible to ambush and kill Krone (and Isabella). The stone cold attitude towards enemies was there from the start, his Lambda (and post-Lambda) experience just fueled it. So I'd call the current Norman a result of "character progression/growth" than "character development". I'm not sure where his development will go but I'm sure something is underway, and it's going to be spectacular.

This is year old, but I’m still #TeamNorman. Here’s why:Although Norman has changed severely in the manga he did that for Emma and for the cattle children. Just cause he didn’t agree with Emma’s plans doesn’t mean he is entirely against her. As for Ray, they seem to have a more sibling relationship to me the I simply cannot look past. Personally when Norman admitted his feelings I felt as if it was endgame. Ray wouldn’t necessarily steal his best friend’s girl.

I'm #teamnorman because whenever he's on screen, something is definitely happening. I see lots of RayEmma shippers and I feel so confused. I, for the life of me, can't ship Ray and Emma. I can ship Norman with Ray and Emma but just. Everything about Ray and Emma screams to me siblings. I say that because their relationship mirrors my own relationship with my brother. I've tried and tried looking at them in a romantic light, but my mind just sees siblings.
