I've fed my worms all the stuff you shouldn't - onions, leeks, shallots, chilli, grapefruit, lemons & oranges. Sure they'll head for the banana or mango skin first but it all disappears eventually
And you never had a problem adding all of that stuff,im a newbie that's why I'm asking,I'm just using a 3 gallon plastic container right now for my kitchen scraps...
@@mercedesbenzs600bash that was a very strong, healthy and active worm farm full of good microbes. Everything broke down quickly. I have a newish 2nd farm that just doesn't seem to get any momentum and it gets fed strictly "by the book".
Really interesting experiment. I'm curious though why there was a lot more worms at the start of the experiment in the spot than at the end. I do feed onions to mine but only in the big outdoor bin. That way they can stay away from the onions or anything else they don't like until the microbes have gone to work on them and made the medium more palatable for the worms. Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing 😊👍
Thanks for your comment LWG. Unfortunately I had left this experiment a little too long before doing the follow up video and the worms had basically finished the job and moved on (other than the skins). I'll re-do this test at some stage and do regular checks. Yes - I use outdoor garden plots as well so that the worms can get away if need be 👍 Cheers, Chris
My earthworms aren't choosy. the microbes break down the food. Great experimenting Good to know as I use a lot of wormpower in my gardening. I'm subbed
Hello sir! I was wondering if you could talk a little about the grinding machine you are using? We'd like to enlarge our worm composting and I'd like to build a machine to grind the feedstock like you did. Thanks!
I got a used blender especially for the worms. 0.5l of water makes 1.5l of worm "porridge" with kitchen scraps. They get through that in about three days! And yes, I do include onions. Teabags, banana peel, potato peelings, anything. If I have no eggshells, I add some oyster shell grit that I bought. I might try to forage some seashells if we're ever allowed to visit the seaside again. ;-)
@Ibis117 OK this is good to know because I'm a newbie and I wasn't sure if onions were good to use,do you use the skins as well??? Now when I'm cutting up my peppers I'm guessing I shouldn't put any seeds in the compost pile, correct???
There's a lot of misinformation out there Lakshana.. onions are fine. You just need to be careful with quantities in small worm farms. But then that advice applies to just about everything!
Displaced or dead because of the onions,im a newbie I need to know if onions, garlic, shallots, seeds from peppers should really go into my little compost container???

Oh good, I thought they don't want onions.

The headgear comment had me rolling. Looks like worms enjoy the onion over the skins. Thanks for sharing. 🐛

Who have you been threatening, the worms LOL.
Haha.. yep! ;)
Wow! This was pretty interesting I didn't think they would eat this.

It's a commercially made garden chipper/shredder. It features in lots of my videos 😊
Thats cool where do you get a mulcher from? I have to use the family blender >. >
Mine came from a garage sale! You can buy similar from hardware/lawnmower shops

Good information.
👍👍😊
What about testing pomegranates, I have been offered over ripe pomegranates, can I put them in?
Most likely! I've never tried them, but they should break down and be consumed quickly. Give it a go 👍😊
Does earthworm eat dried garlic peels?i have lot of peels
The worms would eventually. Composting worms though, rather than earthworms. They are a different species.
@@TheUltimateRecycler oh I c thanks
Can you test raw olives?
Great idea Richard - I'll add that to the list! 👍
@@TheUltimateRecycler Thank you! =)
Wow!! Great video
Thank you! 😊
But , I have heard that worms does not choose onion as its food . And we must not serve them onion and it's peel .

The microbes had a good help in the consumption of the onions for sure definitely not a favorite for the worms.

Not worthy enough what I wanna know. Yeah, You should have watched at the right time. Worms are displaced or dead don't know.

I prefer using the onion in a spaghetti sauce IoIIII
..or a nice omelette! 😁
It's ridiculous. Don't put this in, don't put that in. It'll all break down.
Yep it all does eventually Evan! 👍
