Symphony n°2 is among those which Haydn composed for Count Morzin between 1757 and 1759. The Morzins resided in Prague and had a summer palace in Lukavec, near Pilsen in Bohemia.
The work has only three movements, i.e. no minuet, and is unique in Haydn's symphonic output in that there are no repeat signs in any of the movements, each of which is through-composed (“durchkomponiert”). H.C. Robbins Landon describes symphony n°2 as “much more learned than n°1”, among others because of the use of various contrapuntal techniques (in fact, according to Sonja Gerlach's research [1996], n°37 and n°18 chronologically lie between n°1 and n°2, all being composed between 1757 and 1759). The last movement is an innovative five-part rondo.
In Antonini's sweeping performance the work comes across as a convincing little masterpiece.

I hadn't heard this one before. I see that you have many postings of Haydn symphonies. What fun! I will listen to them all, as there are quite a few I have never heard. Thank you.

@@pepehaydn7039 How interesting. Madame Elaine and I had quite an animated discussion on this very topic in the Comments section of another of these Haydn 2032 videos.
Bottom Line: I just had to give up trying to Reason with the woman. Nietzsche was right when he advised, "Don't argue."" This is especially true when arguing with someone who knows everything.
