Radiata Stories holds such a special place in my heart I loved that game. I always wished there was a sequel. I also like how so many cel-shaded games from 2-3 generations ago look pretty great today. Goes to show that a distinct style > realism.
I recently finished DDS 1 and 2, and considering how cold SMT games can be, I was not expecting how emotional and touching they ended being. A very underrated duology.
There isn't any SaGa spin offs, even Imperial SaGa, Emperors SaGa, Romancing SaGa Re Universe and Imperial SaGa Eclipse are mainline. Considering the first Imperial SaGa is no longer playable you might think that having Mobile in web browser games as mainline games is crazy but it's Akitoshi Kawazu we're talking about. The man behind UNLIMITED Saga,The Last Remnant, Legend of Mana, the Zodiac Spear in the original XII, having Crystal Chronicles multiplayer be locked behind having a Game Boy Advance, and the man who purposely made Ultima useless in Final Fantasy II. Tetsuya Nomura isn't the only mad man who works at that company.
Interesting description of Jade Empire, first time I've heard a bioware RPG needing to use another franchise to explain what it's similar to. I remember when it came out and it sold purely on 'You know Knights of the old republic, yeah it's that but set in Ancient China with combat to match' I enjoyed it.
Jade Empire was my introduction to Bioware and still probably their best work overall IMO. The fact that there was never another game in the series or even a sort of spiritual sequel to this day baffles and infuriates me.
@@2bussy I agree, which is why it is funny to think that Bioware are now terrified that Dragon Age 4 and Mass Effect 4 will be directly compared to BG3
I really liked Radiata Stories. It was just upbeat and goofy. I replayed it several times to find more characters or get different endings, and then there’s that bonus dungeon with characters from Valkyrie Profile
That number 1 :). Amazing list! The DDS duology was a really weird one for me. It was my introduction into Indian mythology, having a whole game built around it from the bottom up really came together in a complete package.
Yaaa!! A new video! Thanks David. This is another great video with some fascinating titles I've never heard of. I look forward to finding these and trying them out.
3:07 Jade Empire is available on PC at GOG. Also in case somebody didn't notice that incospicuous BioWare logo - yup, it's just that, ye olden days BioWare just past KOTOR, not quite as intricate but still has the pedigree.
I love how Romancing Saga's character models low-key look life those of FFIX. The weirdest rpgs I played are probably Deep Labyrinth and Wild Arms 1, with those crazy sound effects. I vividly remember how some enemies meow-ed aftet being defeated.
I doubt many people if any here have heard of this but the strangest JRPG/RPG I've ever played is Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator. Probably showing my age here. It's a very quirky turn based RPG that was clearly trying to replicate Final Fantasy. It's. It a bad game though tbh. Pretty fun if you can look past the looks and controls. Unfortunately it's only ever been available on PC but its always dirt cheap on steam. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try a turn based RPG they've never tried before. May be pleasantly surprised
Romancing SaGa is like biting into a coconut. It has a very tough shell that wards most people away from it, but if you persist you may actually whittle away at its shell to get to its milk. You really have to work to wrest the adventure from the game.
I am SO glad that you talked about Radiata Stories here! It's one of my all-time favorite games and was criminally underrated. I remember being ecstatic to try Romancing Saga as a kid, but I just could not figure it out whatsoever. Still regret selling it though. My friend's been trying to get me into Steambot Chronicles, but it's hundreds of dollars on Amazon right now (when it was literally less than $10 pre-pandemic). Hopefully, I'll try some of these soon!
I always want to try PoPoLoCrois. I heard the PSP version is a mix of the first and second game on PS1, so it miss a lot of content. Is it true, and can I still understand well the story even if there is a lot of cut content ? 😁
These are some of the absolute gems of my collection, (but not Radiata Stories, I still haven't forgiven that game for its BS "twist" at the end) and wow it's hard to believe all of these came out in 2005! Also, I think this may be the first time I ever heard you mention the original XBOX. xD Fun side note: Steambot Chronicles is one of my mom's favorite games, and she played it more than 140 hours
PSP's Popolocrois seems no to be very liked by people who were able to play the original JP games... I remember reading that it misses scenes important for character development or something like that, hence I never played it. But having in mind there's not even a project of translating the originals I'll probably give it a try...
So many games I need to play. I own most of these, but have only played a few. *cries in backlog BUT, I LOVE Romancing Saga! One of my favorites on the PS2. Also that soundtrack was God-tier!
The strangest RPG I’ve ever played has to Mass Effect 2. It was the best RPG of the year, maybe you’ve all heard of it. The weird thing about it is that, while considered an RPG, it plays exactly like a 3rd person shooter with no RPG elements at all.
@@tomderry7295 it doesn't but you said it has no RPGs elements, but it does have many rpg elements, including a leveling system and equipment system. You probably mean it has "few" rpg elements.
Jade Empire holds one of those weird, small places in my heart. I talked on the phone through most of the game with a friend who isnt alive anymore. Ill play it again someday but Id have to play an xbox disc on the 360 thats like using a telegraph.
Digital Devil Saga 1-2 were actually my first SMT games and got me into the series. I think that it is one of the best ones in the series. It's simple but also not boring. The plot is also totally off the wall which I LOVE! My rank list (of the ones I've played): Strange Journey (original) Digital Devil Saga 2 Devil Survivor 1 Digital Devil Saga 1 SMT 4 Devil Survivor 2 SMT 4: Apocalypse Tokyo Mirage Sessions Soul Hackers
I love radita stories I still own it and last time I played I was doing different things I didn't know about the game it definitely has depth to it and I love that.
10: "So player, how do you feel about Suikoden?" "I like the amount of characters I can recruit, why do you ask-" "I PUT OVER 150 PARTY MEMBERS IN!" 9: I really need to get around to beating this, I made it to the last dungeon when I was younger. 8: I wish they'd make more of these, do a new setting, do whatever, I really loved just about everything about the game. Demon Cannibals? That's fuckin' metal! 7: I did beat this one, holy shit does it need a sequel, probably won't get it due to EA either. Fuck EA. 6: Rented it once, didn't get far, sent it back. Shame the latest version tried to change it to a action game, I am both annoyed and confused by the sudden hatred of Turn Based RPG by various devs (Which makes Yakuza 7 Like a Dragon's existence all the more baffling.). 5: 'What if Giant Robots and Branching Paths?' The Game. 4: 'So what if one of you're party members was a Giant, Bipedal Cat who is a master of the Drunken Fist whose best buds with Al Capone?' Because......That was a thing that happened. 3: I don't have any major opinions on this series, I just don't have alot to really add to it, other than I don't care for the series. 2: I know next to nothing bout this, I did think it looked interesting though. 1: 'We made a hard as balls game, good luck suckers!'
Bruh, I hate alot of what you say but you back what you say up with sources from the games themselves and while I don't admire you, I respect you... you got me to try Grandia and I liked it.
Shadow Hearts FTNW instead of Covenant? Covenant had Joachim in it; a gay vampire superhero wrestler who's weapons were just stuff he found lying around the environment. There's also the fact that one of the villains in the game is just straight up Rasputin.
Holy cow! I've never heard of sigma star saga and i played a lot of gba I remember buying digital devil saga when i was 11 around 2006 and simply not getting it, as kid. I endend up trading the game over something really stupid. Now, as a persona fan, i regret not giving it a chance back in the day.
Steamboat Chronicles was the most out of the box from the bunch in ps2 but i enjoyed the hell out of it, i felt that it was funny , had an interesting story plus being a super original RPG
So we got three polo games released as two games. The third ones a half sequel that’s a sequel to the first half of the first game but not to the second half of the first game. Sheesh and people thought the Zelda chronological time line was confusing
I ended up getting Romancing Saga cause of how much I would play Saga Frontier. unlike with Saga Frontier though I never really got anywhere it seems in Romancing Saga. didn't really matter who I chose to start with. after a short time I usually was dead stuck in Romancing Saga.
It took me a long time to really progress in Romancing SaGa as well. It is a bit different than SaGa Frontier because in SaGa Frontier you have a bit more guidance on what to do so you had a little more purpose. You really have to work finding quests and completing them. Though when it clicks it goes from frustrating to amazing. I think I've restarted it about three or so times before I actually *got* it. It is my favorite RPG made as well now.
@@WPFreeinternet yeah I noticed whenever I thought I might be getting somewhere in Romancing Saga the battles just started being too difficult & my party would get wiped out quickly. meanwhile in Saga Frontier I could find a lot of things & the farthest I ended up getting was some castle in Riki's story with what seemed to be a never ending Giant Slime room. the Slimes kept killing me so I gave up then. The strangest RPG I ever played hmm... Dragon Age: Origins is a good contender at strange RPG. A real Bioware at its best RPG, there's morality choices, oodles and boodles of dialogue options and outcomes, and a romancing system. Most of the party is bisexual with only two of the romanceable options being hardline straight. There are sex scenes by a campfire with your underwear... nevermind that you and your allies all camp in the same location. There is also a screen goes black sex scene where you have sex with a male elf, a human woman, and a Mabari War Hound. >_____> In fact, sex and referencing it in as many ways as possible seems woven into the game's fabric. From Dwarven castless prostitutes telling you, "It's two for a "tumble," 10 if you all wanna go at once" to your own Bard having a Lesbian relationship went sour sidequest. Hell, in the origin story for some of the classes/races you have off screen sex before you're done with the tutorial! I mean, I love the game, and I've played every origin and beaten the whole thing dozens of time, but there's always an air of oddity about lavishing gifts on your party members, so that you can fuck their brains out later. You can even cheat on them with each other! Other than that... mmmmm.... Mass Effect 2 comes to mind. Not only is it more action/cover based shooter than it is RPG, it's a sequel to a stellar action RPG. Mass Effect 1 had completely customizable equipment, and you could alter it to the point where you could almost ignore the action aspect of combat. Pop a singularity, all the enemies float into it, and then you disintegrate them with radioactive rounds in a matter of seconds. You can't run out of ammo, your weapons merely overheat. Not only that, but they hard walked back a lot of the world lore, and changed guns to have ammunition(though they at least tried to explain it from a lore standpoint as being "heat sink packets to prevent gun deformation). The third one also retained two's choices.
DDS's are underrated gems that unfortunately have pretty boring dungeon-crawling elements, too similar characters (characters from FF8 at least had different limit breaks) and painfully high random encounter rates, but everything else is great: combat, pacing, plot, you name it.
NO I'm sorry calling the romancing saga games strange isn't right, they go WELL beyond that. I've played 1, 2, and 3 for the SNES they are good but can be a real mind fuck at times
