I made a 3x3 Square-1! (Waterfall Cube)

- The Waterfall Cube is a 3x3 equivalent of a Square-1. The Square-1 is two Windmill 2x2x3 puzzles superimposed, while the Waterfall Cube is two Windmill 3x3s superimposed. It is made by extending a base mini 3x3 with 3D-printed parts, with two separate outer layers. The puzzle shape-shifts quite a lot, and is fairly difficult to solve, requiring cuboid and Square-1 algorithms.
The Puzzle Advent Calendar is a collaboration between many puzzle designers and UA-camrs, releasing 24 daily videos on many different channels. Each video will show a brand new puzzle design, that hasn't been seen before.
The next Puzzle Advent Calendar video will be on Jabberwock Technologies' channel: / channel

amazing work! would love to see this mass-produced. it might finally convince me to learn the square-1 I have sitting unsolved for years now...
Fun fact: the “windmill” 2x2x3 you showed are actually really similar to a puzzle that shengshou is producing called “Square-0” the only diference is that the middle layer is bandaged like a square 1
Yeah it's a Square-0, but the windmill example was better for the comparison in my opinion.
I think I want this in my collection! Neat cube!
A very interesting addition to your waterfall cube series and this year's puzzle advent calendar!
Seeing the print quality you achieved with that Prusa Mk. 4 makes me kind of jealous. I used to think that my 7 years old FFF-Printer still wors fine but comparing the two, I'm still limited to far simpler pieces unless I want to do excessive post-processing. Nice looking puzzle!
Having good prints is a significant game changer, yeah. Much nicer to work with.
Fantastic idea! Great work! It's cool to see this simplified version.
Very well made, I like it! Since you made the Waterfall Cube Ultimate I knew someday it would be a regular one. Good video!
Thanks!
Wonderful creation, great job
The middle layer of a square-1 is just a bandaged 2x2 grid, but the middle layer of the waterfall cube is just a floppy cube (without shapeshifting moves)
If I wanted to be fully authentic to the Square-1, I could have bandaged the center layer into a 1x1x3. The version I made is analogous to a Square-1 with a 2x2x1 inner layer. I didn't bandage the inner layer further, because that would just make the outer layers more annoying to maneuver. Either way the inner layer is trivial to solve, so it doesn't actually add anything to the solving experience.
Why is the middle layer a standard floppy cube and not a windmill one? You have to misalign it first before making turns.@@CubesMadeEasy
It's true that you have to misalign it in the solved state, but it makes it a little less annoying to position pieces when the puzzle is heavily scrambled.
the 3x3 square 1 was my imagination, thanks for making it true
i have an idea.
how about an evil twin 2x2? it could be the mod of 2 1x2x2 or even just 1x2x2 extention mods. i would love to see the complete evil twin family lol
I made one, several years ago. ua-cam.com/video/I42DLHA6NSQ/v-deo.html
Why are some pieces on yellow and white sides missing?
Nice
I wonder why I haven't seen anyone online make a windmill 2x2x2
Maybe it is because that it adds nothing hard to the solve. Every corner still has 3 colours, while the 3x3 one has only 2 colours on each corner.
And there are no centre orientations.
Wait some extra info for you: the Lee Windmill 2x2 and Lee Fisher 2x2 is on the Cubicle
New video :D
The unbandaged version of the square 1 is a square 2.What will be the unbandaged version of this waterfall cube?I cannot comprehend.
Technically the Waterfall Cube Supreme is similar to the Square-2, in that the corners are split in half. But adding more splits quickly makes really small parts that might not hook in well. So more advanced unbandaged Waterfall cubes may be restricted to virtual puzzles.
Will the 4x4x4 waterfall cube(2 windmill 4x4x4s superimposed) work?
Where can I buy this cube? By the way, I think I can solve the cube intuitively after solving the cube shape. And is there parity like Square-1?
Sometime during the video, I mentioned both that I haven't personally encountered any Square-1 parity (only two edges swapped), and that I would like to have this puzzle available for sale sometime next year after some design and material improvements. Hope that helps.
When can I buy this
This is one of the first puzzles I'll be working on making a finalized design for, with the new ABS setup.
