People freak out if you mention nor having pets is a frugality strategy, but it’s absolutely true. Food, meds, grooming, vet bills all add up quickly. She’s not saying you can’t have one, just understand it’s going to cost a lot of money.
I have a cat I rescued out of the street..a lady with a program to spay them for free..took my kitty and got her spayed for me..free, I never had to spend a penny❤
I’d rather give up my Starbucks coffee or monthly subscriptions than my pets! I realize they cost money but the joy they give me cannot be replaced by anything else!! They are the reason I’m rushing home after work. No, thank you. They are staying with me ❤
The reusable products is a game changer. I select one thing each month to swap: one month napkins, next cloth paper towels, next cotton reusable makeup pads, etc. I love how environmentally friendly it is too.
Feminine products, if applicable! I am working on ditching paper towels, slowly gathering appropriate receiving blankets when I find them free or really cheap.
@@dorismahoney1440I don’t know if this really answers your question, but I always keep cleaning products including cleaning cloths/rags under each sink (2 bathrooms and kitchen), and in a tote I carry around to do deeper cleaning. I know if I don’t have everything right there, I won’t clean stuff as often. Anyway, it was a PITA to remember where I needed to put rags after I ran a load of them in the wash. So I bought one pack of microfiber cloths for a few dollars, and now each room has its own color assigned to it, so I always know where to put the laundered ones.
Some people allot money for entertainment or eating out. I built “maintenance” costs for my pets into my budget because they bring me and my family great joy.
Here's a few of my favorite tips: To cut back on laundry, especially for people with children: assign each family member one or two color-coded bath towels and their own towel hook. They are responsible to hang their towel up as soon as they get out of the shower and dry off. They can reuse their towel several times before washing.(As a professional house cleaner I am shocked how many people own dozens of bath towels and each child will shower once, throw their towel on the floor, and before you know it there's a pile of 20 towels needing to be washed. My grandma taught me: whenever you're baking something in the oven use that opportunity to throw in a few potatoes to bake alongside whatever you're making. Then you can have potatoes in the fridge for hash browns or twice baked potatoes etc. Also, I always put my overripe bananas in the freezer to be used in smoothies.
Wow, I can’t believe all the comments about the pets she took a moment to apologize before she talked about it and she said it in the nicest way possible and of course it’s true. My daughter is 40 single she loves her goofball of a dog he saved her emotional life, but it’s expensive. She’s always shocked after a visit to the vet. Of course she wouldn’t trade him for the world, but these are just the facts people.
Depending on where you live, some pets pay for themselves or are super cheap after the initial purchase. For instance, if you can have chickens, they will eat bugs in your yard, including ticks, can eat most kitchen scraps and will reward you with eggs. Do it right, and the amount you save on eggs is more than what you spend on feed. Rabbits are a really cheap pet. You can feed them some kitchen scraps as well as grass, some branches, weeds, etc. They can be trained to walk on a leash and use a litter box. My rabbit will be 10 this year. I've bought 1 50 lb bag of rabbit food per year.
Savings tip! Don't buy bottled water, Get a reusable thermos that can be used for coffee or water when on the go. I keep cold water in the fridge to fill the thermos and out the door I go. Less than a penny a "bottle". And no more plastics in landfills.
People take a deep breath. Take the info that works and let the other go. It’s not hard. I’ve reached an age where I’m worried I’ll outlive my Pet. And they are expensive more now than in the past. Sad but true.
Superb list! I second the no pet policy. As someone who teaches frugality, it is perpetually shocking to find that folks who are constantly at risk of being unable to pay rent, purchase basic food, etc will have 2 or 3 or 4 pets. I know they can be a comfort, but area they more comfort than knowing your children will have food on the table, clothes to wear or prescriptions? When all of my children were still at home, especially teenaged boys, I learned which day the butcher at my local grocery store marked down meat. I went right after kiddos left for school and purchased the marked down items that we would use. The average savings was 55% and up to 80%. I then returned home, batch cooked and froze. Libraries! Oh my heavens they can be a resource of invaluable benefit. Our library system has ‘Makerspaces’ in every branch. (I know, we are fortunate). The space has available everything from 3D printers to laser cutters to sewing machines and all those devices you would purchase and maybe soon ignore. Add in the activities, groups, classes and, of course, online offerings and they are a hub of entertainment and education possibility. Thanks for the list of libraries offering non-resident cards! Oh, our library has an agreement with the ‘next door’ jurisdiction. We can get a library card without living in that county and that card then links to the largest city library system. Great video!

I am with you. 3 dogs, 2 cats, a gaggle of chickens. I wouldn't trade them for anything BUT- one of our cats is elderly, and I have been considering not adopting a second again when he passes. I have had TWO cats always, but I think, due to costs, we may go down to one. Even cat litter costs have jumped a ridiculous amount! I should add- debt free including the house!
My sister and I used to volunteer at the same thrift shop that benefited an animal rescue group. She was so excited to buy some Christmas items just like Mom had when she was alive. I didn't remember they were Mom's and donated them! We still laugh about that one. I am the queen of returns!
Batch cooking is the way to go for our household. When good hamburger is on a super sale I will buy the limit. I then fry up the meat and put it into my crockpot with onions and taco seasoning and let it slow cook all day. I then divy it up in meal size bags and put in freezer. We have tacos, taco soup, taco salad for several months ready to go. I also do this with making sloppy joes and having it ready when we want them. The slow cooker gives them an added richness.
I agree with the pets. If you don't already have one, they are expensive. Foster a pet for a short time. Pay off bills first to allow your budget for a pet.
The one about bringing your husband to the grocery store is true... I'm the husband and I do the grocery shopping. I make a list, rarely stray unless there's a good clearance. If my wife comes, I go over the list with her and she easily adds at least $50 to it. I do the cooking and I know what we have and need.
If you can't afford to own a pet, why not get your fix by volunteering at a local shelter? Better yet, turn your love of animals into a side gig by walking dogs or pet sitting, or work part-time at a pet store? That way, you get to spend time with furry friends and earn extra money!
I pet sit for my daughter fairly regularly. It gives me my pet fix. She pays for their food and supplies, pet insurance and security (tracking collars;) but she doesn't have to pay for - or subject her little dogs to(!) - a kennel, when she needs 24-hour pet care.
Your comments about Dunkin resonate with me completely. I was a total Dunkin fanatic, but not only is it expensive, lately it just hasn't lived up to snuff. Many times I've caught myself thinking about going and then I realize I can make an iced mocha latte at home that is as good, if not better. I was there this week and everything I got was disappointing.
I fel that way about Panera lately. They changed their menu when they became a publicly traded company and the quality has sufered. I just cant bring myself to eat there any more. Disappointing.

I think a lot of people just heard “don’t have pets” and didn’t listen to the statement in its entirety. As always context and listening and understanding is important here. And also if you disagree with something just don’t take the advice lol. Getting all bent out of shape over it is ridiculous.
Here’s what’s gonna ruffle everyone’s feathers don’t have any kids. They’re the most expensive human beings you will ever ever have in your entire life and some don’t grow up. 😂😂
Sorry, I may be in the minority here but I agree with your comments about pets. Too many people take pets on and then when they can't afford them they bring them to the animal shelter or some worse let them go in the streets. I agree, if you can't afford a pet, don't get a pet. It's not fair to the animal. It is the exact reason why I don't have any animals - I can't afford them.
@@saraconklinfrozenpenniessame here if they are made out of pork products. Beef hot dogs and beef bologna I can digest. Most pork products I avoid because they can flare up my arthritis.
these are such useful tips. with food prices sky rocketing yes i agree with freezing left overs right away, especially in this hot weather when food goes off very quickly. less is more when it comes to our clothes I had to chuckle at my self because I have a wardrobe full of clothes and more often than not I gravitate to a few clothing items or i ask myself what i'm i going to wear.
Learning to be flexible with recipes, food, clothing/fabrics. I don't eat hotdogs (can't stand the taste), but I know of Multiple ways to use them in meals. I repurpose clothing or fabric, that is in very good condition, I am currently making an apron for a cousin and have made my own cloth napkins, Leftovers become casseroles, or fillers for my eggs at breakfast. I've an electric stovetop so when my food is almost done I turn off the stove put the lid on the pan, put a hot pad over the lid and a dish towel over that to keep the heat in to finish cooking with residual heat.
I feel ya. For me it’s how they say I have too many cats. Well they may be right or they may be wrong. But if you really pay attention, you soon realize how much they help you. Such is the case with me also. 😊 I can say tho that I’m at my limit tho. I can’t deal with more at this time. But I’m keeping the ones I have. (It’s not like you could easily adopt them out anyways once they’re not “cute little kittens” anymore). They call it the cat mafia and it’s kinda true. Once you’re in you’re in for life. But what can I say? They have my heart. It’s like having kids. You have them and get to know them and bond with them and it changes you and you can’t seem to help but to love them forever. I still do SOME counseling also tho Bcuz my fam is hella toxic.
I’ve had fruits or vegetables that have spoiled within 2 days. I use to just throw them out and chalk it up as a loss. Not anymore, I return it right back to the store
Some of my kitties are amazing vermin and rodent “hunters.” They also keep me sane and give me daily purpose and routine. Their entertaining antics and their wondrous feats and their cuddly affection. What they teach me about life and love. I think I’d go crazy if it was just me alone all the time here without them. Of course our situation is more or less like stray and feral and barn cat setup. My little wild ones would not fare well as indoor only cats. So funny tho. When summer hits I suddenly want picnic food like hot dogs or shrimp cocktail or BBQ or cold, juicy sandwiches or cold fruit on a hot summer day. Ice cream and shakes etc. Then when winter comes I go back to other “comfort foods.” But often I skip the buns etc and just eat the dogs (beef franks for me lol) with a bit of mustard. Usually chips or tater tots with. Lol. The grocery sales are usually on point also with the seasonal changes. So it works for me. Lol. I don’t want a shark or a Dyson. Lol. My little dirt Devil vibe is the best vac I’ve ever had. (Usually under $50 and lasts me for years even with a bunch of cat dander). So if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it. I also find a very cheap broom and dustpan is very effective most days.
It is best to brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush. The toothpaste is actually an abrasive and should only be used to freshen your breath, that or mouthwash. So yes, a small amount of toothpaste should suffice.
I think its silly that so many people are getting upset over the comments about pets. Having pets is expensive. I would love to own a few cats, my daughter has been asking for cats for years but I can't afford it at the moment. Instead ill wait until I'm more financially stable before I go and adopt or buy cats.
Have found this easy. Took some senior citizens tips, the generation that lives through the Great Depression. For me, I portion off, and a pinch of salt. Have received milk passed through several hands from food pantries and have frozen my milk off this way. Some of the milk I use immediately, but have concerns, so, a pinch of salt. Recently, purchased a yogurt maker for my morning smoothies. And the yogurt pamphlet states the converted milk/yougurt can last up to two weeks. Both the pinch of salt and yogurt methods of preserving milk have been game changers.
😂..'don't bring your husband shopping with you'. I can totally relate! My husband always adds more to the cart and spends more money than l do! When he does come shopping with me, I will usually take some of the things out he puts in and not buy them..
If you let things sit in your online cart, double-check what’s in there before you buy! I can’t count how many times my husband has gotten a package and said, “Oh, I thought I took that out.” 🤦♀️ I think giving yourself a waiting period is a great idea (I do that myself), but don’t forget to look again before ordering.
.I get the pet thing. I already have three cats and thought I might want to get a puppy when I retired. I decided to take early retirement and just can't fit a dog into our new budget. I will just continue to puppysit my daughter's dog and get my fix that way.
It's interesting how people get offended when you mentioned pets... don't they realize you only making suggestions? We have 2 dogs and are saving up for a kitten. We're buying cat food and litter and going to be ready when she comes home. The key is planning and saving, and still paying down debt pretty well.
I have lived with lots of dogs and cats, but I can no longer do so. I don't have time and facilities to look after a dog or cat. They would spend most of the day alone, so I cannot do it. It breaks my heart that so many dogs and cats are abandoned and end up in a shelter. A friend of mine recently got a Great Pyrenees dog from a shelter. He was 4 years old and huge. Someone had abandoned him in the woods near their town. Nobody wanted to adopt such a large dog. My friends family decided to adopt him and he is now doing well and getting on with 3 other dogs and two small children. Supposedly, he has become quite fond of the children and will stand guard on them when they are playing in the yard.
I was going to the grocery store for something. I got a soda. Instead of getting a cold 20 oz bottle for $2.39. I got a 1 litter bottle of the same soda for $2.19. My kitten hurt his leg. The vet bills for meds and operation. On top of medical bills. Put me in a debit till Dec. 24.
My cat costs $20 a month, plus I put away $10 monthly towards possible vet care. I buy quality kibble that I moisten with broth. I make cat treats and toys. You can be frugal and still have a pet.
Many good points! We are targets for advertising 24/7 - 365😅 Just count in ONE day how many our brains have to ignore. And then there's the "influencers" all over online ... for commi$$ion, view$ pay, $poncers ... All can be very subtle, but insidious.
❤I no longer use any shampoo or conditioners in the shower, no one time use plastic bottles to recycle and way less expensive buying the all in one soap on Amazon from the company right to shower.
I completely loved my goldfish and had him for 22 years but I’m not gonna get any more fish. That $.20 goldfish overtime cost me close to $1000 …someday when I retire and I’m debt-free then I’ll get a little dog but right now I am on a debt-free journey and will not have any pets.
I do this and dang the savings add up. If anything I bought was on sale I would take that saving and save it. My beloved neighbor taught me this. She used the saving to pay for airline tickets for her g babies. Paying for 3 g babies airline tickets 2x a year that is some saving!
It is horrible for a pet not to get treatment it needs when it needs it. Pets are great but if money is tight, foster instead. Everything Is paid for and you still get the love or a furry bestie.
MY husband & I, live a frugal life, with our 6 furrie kids, and include thier expense's into our frugal lifestyle, SO YES , we all can still have our furrie children, in our lives ;0 we have 4 kitty-cat's & 2 dog's ;0 they are all rescue's.
So many people have more than one pet. I think people in a money crunch should be satisfied with one pet. Pets enjoy being the center of attention and not having to share everything. Another thing I've noticed is overspending on grandchildren. I heard one man who was coming out of bankruptcy say he tried to save but the wife spent it all on the grandchildren. It seems like a noble thing to do, but not when you're in debt or needing to keep from being in debt. Use some common sense, people.
I would love to have another little dog, but there is no way I can afford it. Rent in Florida is outrageous. So I see what you mean about pets being expensive.
We lost our dog 🙏2 years ago and Hubby wants another one badly. We literally lost thousands replacing ruined Carpeting, Vet Bills, Pet Insurance, Groomers, Kennels, and Dog Food. It totaled over $12,000. Being retired on limited income, there is no way we can have another pet, even if I wanted one. Good thing we don't have Grandkids.....
I have already thinned down- and I will not be a minimalist under any circumstances. I am a historical re-enactor for Civil War and Medieval. Those are my hobbies I will not abandon them. Over and out
Dont bring your husband to the shops.... but MY husband will only buy what's on the shopping list. In fact even if its so ething he finished he won't realise we need it.
I SEE PEOPLE ON THE STREET BEGGING FOR MONEY AND ALONG SIDE THEM THEY HAVE 1 BIG DOG OR MORE WITH HUGE BAGS OF DOG FOOD. GET RID OF THE DOG AND FREE UP SOME MONEY TO FEED YOURSELF

@@Intentional-frugality rather have a pet
That is so true
This is a trend now.
You are a responsible animal lover. ❤
Nothing better then having a loving and faithful dog along with an occasional hot dog with chili, mustard, and onions.😊
Miss my dog every day. Ugh. I cannot do hot dogs. 😂 I also cannot eat Bologna!
@@saraconklinfrozenpenniessame here if they are made out of pork products. Beef hot dogs and beef bologna I can digest. Most pork products I avoid because they can flare up my arthritis.
I’d love to see your decluttering process.
Great job Sarah ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊

Our Walmart is awful for produce but good for most everything else. So I tend to shop at 2 stores
One of your best videos!!!
these are such useful tips. with food prices sky rocketing yes i agree with freezing left overs right away, especially in this hot weather when food goes off very quickly. less is more when it comes to our clothes I had to chuckle at my self because I have a wardrobe full of clothes and more often than not I gravitate to a few clothing items or i ask myself what i'm i going to wear.
Would love to see a video on how you declutter your house!❤
Coming soon!
Great information! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Another fantastic video from Sara!! Thank you!!!!
I'm sorry I have 2 cats and 1 cat is 16 years old and has some health issues but I would not trade them for the world
@@marciaford7882 totally agree
Learning to be flexible with recipes, food, clothing/fabrics. I don't eat hotdogs (can't stand the taste), but I know of Multiple ways to use them in meals.
I repurpose clothing or fabric, that is in very good condition, I am currently making an apron for a cousin and have made my own cloth napkins,
Leftovers become casseroles, or fillers for my eggs at breakfast. I've an electric stovetop so when my food is almost done I turn off the stove put the lid on the pan, put a hot pad over the lid and a dish towel over that to keep the heat in to finish cooking with residual heat.
Great ideas!
married for 53 years and never had a budget. We are retired and debt free.
Excellent tips!
Thanks and thank you for watching!
I would be here for a decluttering video!
Sorry - my pet is better than a therapist or most of my family members!!!
I get it. I would have never gotten rid of my dog just to save. But I’m not sure I will ever get another. 😕
My animals are my children. I agree, if you can't afford a pet, don't get one.
Pets are better than a lot of pe pole w/o all the demands.

The humidity is great for the indoor plants. Its great for skin and hair.😊
Great ideas😊.
I like to go daily for eeduced veggies, u must eat or cook that day or soon.
This is a huge video with many good points. But it's almost overwhelming how many points this could be three separate videos.🎉❤
Thanks for the feedback!
Yes I do return stuff when I need too. I'm tired of making these companies richer!
Good for you!
I’ve had fruits or vegetables that have spoiled within 2 days. I use to just throw them out and chalk it up as a loss. Not anymore, I return it right back to the store
Yes would like to see you declutter and get ready for garage sale
You look great in red!
Thanks so much!!!
How do you freeze milk?
Have found this easy. Took some senior citizens tips, the generation that lives through the Great Depression. For me, I portion off, and a pinch of salt. Have received milk passed through several hands from food pantries and have frozen my milk off this way. Some of the milk I use immediately, but have concerns, so, a pinch of salt. Recently, purchased a yogurt maker for my morning smoothies. And the yogurt pamphlet states the converted milk/yougurt can last up to two weeks. Both the pinch of salt and yogurt methods of preserving milk have been game changers.
I just pour a little out and throw it in the freezer. Let it thaw completely in the refrigerator and shake like crazy.
Think of putting plywood under the sofa cushions. I know someone who did this. It may get you a few more months or years out of it with a throw cover.
Amen on #3 about pets.
.I get the pet thing. I already have three cats and thought I might want to get a puppy when I retired. I decided to take early retirement and just can't fit a dog into our new budget. I will just continue to puppysit my daughter's dog and get my fix that way.
Pets. They’re so cute and cuddly tho!
Just feed them your leftovers. Or share your plate at dinner.
@@Devie-tx8ri and worth every cent
It's interesting how people get offended when you mentioned pets... don't they realize you only making suggestions? We have 2 dogs and are saving up for a kitten. We're buying cat food and litter and going to be ready when she comes home. The key is planning and saving, and still paying down debt pretty well.
Just from a money standpoint, the pet expenses push the limits of my budget. I love my pets, but don’t plan to add any in the future.
@@LoriFidler-v9b me too but worth it
My cat costs $20 a month, plus I put away $10 monthly towards possible vet care. I buy quality kibble that I moisten with broth. I make cat treats and toys. You can be frugal and still have a pet.
Can you share your cat treat recepies, thanks
Please have a declutter, organizing video. Watch you a lot. I need to up my frugal game as I'm almost weined into retirement.
Many good points! We are targets for advertising 24/7 - 365😅 Just count in ONE day how many our brains have to ignore. And then there's the "influencers" all over online ... for commi$$ion, view$ pay, $poncers ... All can be very subtle, but insidious.
Agree! Thanks for the tips!
❤I no longer use any shampoo or conditioners in the shower, no one time use plastic bottles to recycle and way less expensive buying the all in one soap on Amazon from the company right to shower.
Such an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing!
Shop at auctions for furniture. 😊

My pets are my children. I will never be without a pet.
I get it 🙂
No one said you should 💛
It is horrible for a pet not to get treatment it needs when it needs it. Pets are great but if money is tight, foster instead. Everything Is paid for and you still get the love or a furry bestie.
Great tip!
MY husband & I, live a frugal life, with our 6 furrie kids, and include thier expense's into our frugal lifestyle, SO YES , we all can still have our furrie children, in our lives ;0 we have 4 kitty-cat's & 2 dog's ;0 they are all rescue's.
I get my pet fix from my daughter’s puppy!
I love this! It's a win/win!
Growing up we never bought buns as Dad said use slice of bread it's the same as a bum
Pets are cheaper than kids. More therapetic.
Kids are definitely more expensive.
My family has always been my problem
I would love to have another little dog, but there is no way I can afford it. Rent in Florida is outrageous. So I see what you mean about pets being expensive.
As regards pets, I lament when someone with pets has to move, or whatever, and the loyal, loving pet is then homeless. Sad, sad, sad.
A pet sitter for others can pay really well!
I have chickens,a turkey, rabbits that I could make money on ,and 2 dogs it’s getting really expensive but it is food security…not the dogs lol
Pets are Expensive!!
LOL same with my husband. He acts like a kid in a candy store and wants to buy everything
LOL! I hear ya!
I have already thinned down- and I will not be a minimalist under any circumstances. I am a historical re-enactor for Civil War and Medieval. Those are my hobbies I will not abandon them. Over and out
Cashiers at Home Depot are allowed to give you up to $50 off without manager approval.
I'm sending your hubby $1.25 so he can get some hotdogs.
LOL!!! I think he's good.😂 (too funny)
Dont bring your husband to the shops.... but MY husband will only buy what's on the shopping list. In fact even if its so ething he finished he won't realise we need it.
The audio in this video makes it hard to keep watching… is it just me??
