I know the video is old and you probably won't see this but thank you so much I have learned much from you .. I tend to put turrets on rooftops on the buildings I make .. wiring Glitch has come very handy..I am not a perfectionist so I don't hide every wire but it's very helpful .. I tend to use modpos console commands as I play on PC however they don't always work correctly so I also use rug glitch/ pillar glitch that helps especially when I rebuild places like Croup manor for example

A comment on putting turrets higher up for greater range: in one of my playthroughs, I had built some fairly tall turret platforms in both Abernathy Farm and Red Rocket Truck Stop. I was jogging along the road and just passing Concorde when I saw a BOS vertibird open fire on RRTS. RRTS responded with MG, laser and missiles. The vertibird started to back away towards the water tower when suddenly, I saw lasers and missles coming in from Abernathy! That vertibird was stuck in a cross fire and disintegrated! Also, one other playthrough, I was at that school near Murkwater, the ghouls started to swarm me and just after the fight started, they were being hit by my turrets in Murkwater. Those turrets have a lot of range if you give them line of sight!

Just found this series and have already learned a lot about settlement building in Fallout 4. This video in particular has shown me something I've never considered and it's a lot more practical than how I normally build defenses. Definitely going to take a harder look at settlement building after this series.

Is that what is required? This says "no mods", but I don't have available any of the things he's talking about. I have wood or metal structures, and can try to piece together shacks or do pre-fabs. That's it. No warehouses, barns, or concrete structures. I was hopeful this would give useful tips on how to work with those things. Though at least I learned how to move stuff without me having to move.

Love the vid, always looking for new way to build my gun towers. I usually just build them using the scaffolding and then put 2 heavy machine guns on either end, then layer them 3 platforms high . Never even considered the Vault tec DLC stuff. Makes me want to actually finish my Vault 88 Build to unlock this stuff so I can build it out in the world.

Awesome series so far! Here is a tip for you: you can actually jump while in in workshop mode!!! Instead of exiting build mode to jump from the scaffolding to the top of the tower, you can use the "Y" button (Xbox) to jump so that way you don't have to wait for the menu delay. This is actually really helpful when you have obstacles in your way and need to get past them while holding an object for example. Check it out and make sure to share with the community!

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone  7 років тому

Yup, I definitely use the jump ability when in workshop mode. I might not have done it in that moment because I was either distracted or didn't want to fall. But yeah, it's essential.

I saw a video (maybe yours?!) that they had a small wood floor piece floating in air, then a fan on the bottom and a turret on top and the fan was spinning thanks to power hub on the ground. The whole thing was like 2-3 stories high and it made it look like the turrets were flying on the fan. Could do the same thing with large floor piece and 4 fans, 4 turrets for the quadcopter look.

It has become my fallback game when I am between other games however, due to your videos, I never realized all the things you can really do in-game. Thanks.

The other advantage to having turrets at a higher level is that they are more immune to damage from suicide mutants with mini nukes who can easily wipe out several turrets at ground level and therefore have high walls like the shack foundation or the high metal per made pieces with standard wood floor on top to provide a bit of height for the turrets when building a wasteland base usually at the red rocket outside sanctuary which is a quiet place but still comes under attack once you enter diamond city

Rug glitch works on turrets, so you can even make this with 8 turrets.

I did a similar thing where I built an overhang on the "front" of the castle (facing Boston, not Spectacle Island) and used scaffolding to "support" the structure. What I ended up doing was stacking two of the 4 post scaffs and then put the boards down on the first one (the second snapping to the floors of the overhang) and placed turrets on there. Yours look very great for vault builds, but thought I'd toss an idea to keep with the "Fallout feel". Great idea though!

  • @dirtnastyish

I was getting some savage settlement attacks out at Warwick Homestead. It would be high level super mutants or gunners. They would be bullet sponges so it would take me a ton of rounds to kill them and of course by then the settlement would be all messed up. I finally built some towers like this with laser and missile turrets so now I just show up there and see the bodies flying through the air.

Gonna have to use this technique. Graygarden attacks are what prompted me to make monster bots. Lost Supervisor White in a raider strike, then lost two more Mr. Handy's. Replaced them with souped-up sentry bots with assaultron legs, double mortar launchers, & double Gatling lasers & voltaic frames in every slot available. Use the same config for my robot caravans.
What are they called? If they're stationed in Graygarden, they're Graygardener-01 for example. The ones which take to the roads are Graywanderers.
Did you know the robots you make level with you? Most settlers & bots have a fixed level which is relatively low. The robot logistics train levels up each time you do. Can make them pretty terrifying. I've seen them solo deathclaws & handle super mutants & ghoul gang-bangs with ease.
Thanks for all this info, Paul. You're a gentleman & a scholar.

  • @XoRandomGuyoX

That's a lot fancier than my Wooden Shack Bridge approach. It must work great with Missile Turrets, since a generator can be placed up there safely and you can attach some fences to block the missile turret's line of fire against the settlement proper.

You can easily fine tune the placement of the turrets without having to climb the tower if you place a floor tile on the ground and then place your turrets. Then you can move the floor tile to the top of the tower and it will snap it place from the ground without any problems.

    BONUS TIPS!!
TIP 1) Turrets have a 360 degree arc. Yup, that's right! Just because they "patrol" in one small arc, doesn't limit them from shooting enemies behind them. It's important to note that if an enemy hasn't been spotted behind them yet, they will not see them. Having a setup like this helps you for a number of reasons. First, the detection arcs overlap. This let's the turrets overlap their patrol area to spot enemies sooner. Secondly. They have each other's backs. Meaning; while turrets can't detect enemies that are behind them (unless they get shot), the turrets on either side have an increased chance to spot the enemy, thus alerting the non facing turret, as well as any others nearby.
TIPS 2) When placing the heavy machine gun turret, notice the model number (mkI, mkIII, mkV). This coincides with the leveled enemies map overlay (a map that shows the relative difficulty levels of enemies in that area). As a rule of thumb, Sanctuary is a low level area, and as you go farther south/south-east, the enemies get higher in levels. What does that have to do with this tip? Placing the heavy MG turret will place different leveled turrets based on location. For example, placing the heavy MG turret in Sanctuary will give you a mkI turret, while placing the same turret at Somerville Place will give you the mkv. Here's the real tip. You can change/toggle the level of the heavy MG turret in the build menu. To do this, select the turret and before you place it, rotate it to see which model it is. If it's mkI, use the arrow keys/d-pad to back out of the turret selection, and reselect it (down, then up on the D-pad for consoles). It will cycle through the different models that you've unlocked. I'm not sure how they unlock, but, my guess is your character level and/or how far into the higher leveled parts of the map you've visited. Most times you can place the mkV at any location if you cycle through them enough times.
TIP 3) Knowledge is power! You don't need to line your settlement with turrets. And we should all know by now that totally enclosing your settlements with walls, does nothing. Since enemies have spawn points within several settlements' boundaries and enemies will teleport towards the center of a settlement based on the amount of time it takes you to arrive at the attack. Now, hear me out on this one. You can do two things here. One, you can guess where the spawn points are. OR, look up a video where someone has enabled a mod that puts waypoints in the settlements where the spawn points are. From experience, I can tell you, without mods, that Graygarden has several spawn points. One is up the hill along the rails (this one might just be a random wandering enemy encounter route). One is actually next to the farm house. And another is next to the car you can win (like, right next to it). I think there is another one to the east, but I've never been attacked from that direction. What does this mean? Group your defenses around those spots. I've totally enclosed the enemy spawn point at my Longfellows Cabin Settlement (only one spawn point there), turning it into a glass walled death trap for all to see!
Things to take away from this video: The tower build is ideal for large area coverage, and it saves valuable building space. Being higher up also means that they can see farther as well.
    BONUS NON-RELATED TIDBIT
Place turrets on top of the Finch Farm overpass along the broken roadway facing the junkyard (I forgot what it's called), and Saugus Ironworks. Now, sit back and watch the show! A few of the gunners that spawn on the other part of the overpass are within targeting range of your turrets and they will continually shoot that area. This will bait and switch them (or kite them, if you prefer). Once they figure out where they're being shot from, they will all start to make their way towards Finch Farm. Along the way, they will once again get within firing range and line of sight of those same turrets. They will never make it to the farm alive!
    ENJOY!!

Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work (just tried it again). I currently have patched version 1.9.4.0.1. It used to work back around 1.09. Either Bethesda patched it out or my game got bugged. Neither one would surprise me. I just tested it before I responded. I don't like giving out inaccurate information and I never really paid much attention to it since I seemed to always get mk 5 or 7 turrets (Sanctuary on my xbone save had mk 7 before mods were available). And I hadn't tried it for awhile. It appears to change your turret level depending on the location. It coincides with the leveled map. The farther south/south-east you go the higher the level you can build. Sanctuary, RR, and Sunshine Tidings co-op all had mk 1 while Taffington Boathouse had mk 3, Egret Tours Marina had mk 5 and Spectacle Island had mk 7. This may just be my game, but I couldn't get it to work. But as of July of 2016 it did work (Oxhorn has video proof).
For anyone that is curious as to what the leveled map looks like:

I think I got the instructions wrong. Instead of selecting down and back up to the same turret, I think it was to select left or right to another turret until the model changes on the heavy mg.

  • @Urgelt

I've had bad luck with turrets shooting at and hitting each other in a setup like this one. Which makes them go crazy and attack anything and everything, including settlers. If an enemy appears, they *will* shoot. They will make no attempt to avoid shooting another turret in the way.
I prefer to set up turrets where they can only shoot outwards from a settlement, and where they can't shoot each other. Which means placing some barriers in directions that I don't want them to shoot. One can do this from raised platforms, too.
If enemies get past the turrets and into the settlement, welp, it'll be up to the settlers to deal with it. And me, of course. :-)

Did you know? While in settlement build mode, if you go up to a turret that's already placed, without selecting it, just highlight it with your reticule, you can adjust the direction its pointing by clicking left or right on your mouse buttons.

Walls look great from a roleplay view but it's not helpful in reality. Enemies spawning while you're in the settlement do get blocked. But if it's an attack while you are away, enemies dont calculate walls and just spawn in the middle of the base

Love those turret towers. If you're interested, I can get you a link showing all enemy spawn points for every settlement. Most of my first playthrough settlements have missile turrets. I haven't lost a settler yet, but there's always a chance. They are definitely a high risk, high reward option. Places like Murkwater (if the Mirelurk queen doesn't respawn) with only one spawn point is a good choice for missile turrets.
