- Radio Mirchi's RJ Sayema translates and explains Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem Hum Dekhenge in this video. The poem, 'Hum dekhenge', which has grown into a protest staple with a tune of its own, was sung at a December 17 march organised in solidarity with the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, upon whom police had unleashed violence on December 15. The poem was also recited at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur which later snowballed into a controversy big enough for the institution to form a panel to decide whether the spirit of the poem is ‘anti-Hindu’.

The poem simply means oppression (Tyranny/ Dictatorship/ Authoritarianism) will one day end and rule-by-the-masses (Democracy/ Republic) will prevail. The present debate doesn't hold water for two reasons: 1. Faiz was a Marxist. So don't even think the poem has any religious connotations, on the contrary, it talks against it allegorically as this poem was sort of a protest poem against Zia ul Haq, arguably a stuanch fundamentalist. 2. The references to God, people of God, House of God, Idols, etc are allegorical simply to put forward the ultimate truth as discussed earlier.
democracy is worst. republic should prevail. democracy has given last 150 years of bloodlust. democracy is mob rule. republic is one should look for. democratic republic to be precise.

Rambhai Yadav republic is rule of law. democracy is mob rule. eg riot is a democratic. who wants that? republic means rule of law. eg. in usa one person cannot do everything no matter who is he. everybody has their own responsibilities and power. eg. a local sheriff can override president when it comes to his constituency.
in republic the question is always what the law says. in democracy it is always janta or pradhan mantri or chief minister etc. nobody talks about law.

In any republic, the government is formed by a majority and the losers abide by the laws formulated by the government. They may protest, but only peacefully, without causing damage or inconvenience to other members of the society.
For your further information, this above poem has been sung in protest against a republic (Pakistan is an Islamic Republic).
Even China is a republic (full name of China is PRC - People's Republic of China).

This such poem is still popular in Palestine as it considered there as a song of liberty. This is true that this was written during mentioned regime but it is marginally associated with it and largely with universal oppression of the common people, the wreched of the earth. 1. उन्नाव में रेप किसने किया भाजपा विधायक कुलदीप सेंगर ने, FIR किस पर दर्ज की गई?...रेप पीड़ित बच्ची पर, अंत में उसके परिवार पर ट्रक चढ़वा दिया सो अलग।
2. बलात्कार किसने किया बीजेपी के गृहमंत्री "स्वामी चिन्मयानंद" ने, एफआईआर किस पर दर्ज हुई? पीड़ित बच्ची पर।
3. भीमा कोरेगांव में हिंसा किसने फैलाई? मोदी जी के गुरु सम्भाजी भिड़े ने। FIR किस पर हुई? पिटने वाले प्रोफेसरों, लेखकों और ऑर्गेनाइजरों पर। और उन्हें अर्बन नक्सली भी घोषित कर दिया।
4. छत्तीसगढ़ में आदिवासी सौनी सोरी के चेहरे पर तेजाब किसने फिंकवाया? डीएसपी कल्लूरी ने। FIR किसपर की गई? पीड़ित सौनी सोरी पर (कल्लूरी का क्या हुआ? कल्लूरी का प्रमोशन हुआ)
5. अखलाक की हत्या किसने की? बीजेपी विधायक संगीत सोम समर्थक भीड़ ने। FIR किसपर दर्ज हुई? मृतक अखलाक के परिवार पर।
6. गोरखपुर मेडिकल कॉलेज में 100 से अधिक बच्चों की मौत हुई, जिम्मेदारी आनी थी योगी पर। लेकिन FIR किसके नाम चढ़ा दी गई? डॉ कफ़ील पर.., उस इंसान पर जो वहां बच्चों को बचाने के लिए दौड़-धूप कर रहा था। डा. कफील पर ही FIR क्यों चढ़वाई? क्योंकि उस बेचारे के नाम में ही मुसलमान था, और योगी का नाम उस केस में से कैसे भी करके निकालना था।
6. इंस्पेक्टर सुबोध सिंह को गोली किसने मारी? भाजपा समर्थकों ने । माला पहनाकर स्वागत किसका किया गया? सुबोध के हत्यारों का..।

Faiz Ahmed Faiz was a Pakistani who believed in Communist (Marxist) ideology. He was arrested for participating in an attempted coup against the first democratically elected government in Pakistan in 1951. The poem talks about people's rule. What can be a better example of that than a people's elected government? This is hypocrisy. The song has beautiful melody. It's very catchy. But pay attention to the lyrics too. It was used in JNU by the tukde gang. Support and glorify it only if it is used in the right context.

I agree it does reverberate and also with "truth prevails". However, beyond that, there is a vast difference. The Urdu verse deals with social situation while the Sanskrit mantra deals with spiritual truth.

Safa was the first school set up by Prophet Muhammad in Haram e kaaba.
Here faiz uses it as an ironic way that Ahl e safa means Students were welcomed in Haram but now in prevailing situation the students are banned even to enter in the school.
Ahl-e- safa means either people of tasawuf (basically Sufis) or it also mean clean hearted people whose heart is clean from materials of the world
