I was a mechanic at a bike shop and worked on a CBX 1000 that had straight pipes. 3 on each side and it was the most wicked sounding bike ever!! Hahaha. and I've heard a lot of bikes.
I remember this bike when it came out. Kawasaki had some pretty stout stuff on the road back then but the operative word for the CBX 1000 was "RESPECT".
Indeed thanks to the high revving engine... V12's are essentially two inline 6 cyllinder like this one put together. your ear and brain are tuned because mid 90's were the last v12 f1 engines, then v10's at the early 00's and so on, and V10s don't sound like this at all.
I took motorcycle caravans to Mexico about 1987. All lead-sleds and Beamers. A few Harleys, a '51 Indian, some 750 Hondas, etc. All the Harleys burned the exhaust valves running nova gas. I took a Harley to a motorcycle mechanic in Merida. He had all the Harley parts because he was a Former mechanic for the police Harleys in San Francisco. PD. He had a CBX with just a few miles on it that had put a rod through the case. He just couldn't get the parts. The bike belonged to a cop who wound it up and dumped the clutch trying to do a wheelie. Near Mexico D.F there were occasional groups of cafe racers. The sixes, Honda and Kawasaki were in the lead with open pipes,,, followed by Honda 750s,, last came a solitary Triumph.. When they came up on my caravan of Wings, they would slow down to warp one and check out the bikes. After a few minutes, they would crank it back up to warp seven. You should have heard a CBX with open Kerker exhaust going through downtown Quereretaro with all the highwall buildings next to the road. I also took the bike caravans that crossed on the ferry from La Paz AND, I tied them on to the piggyback train through the Copper Canyon. We derailed twice.
I test rode a new CBX in '79....beautifully smooth Engine...but opted for the CB900F.....almost as fast and it had Quicker Handling.. I wish I owned both now...
To get my certification,i took one of these apart and,put it back together.my final exam.It was silver colored.remember it like it was yesterday.it seemed like that engine was 5 feet wide. What a beast of a bike.Memories😌
My very first motorcycle engine overhaul was a 1979 CBX engine. The bike had a rod punch a hole in the cases. I found another engine and swapped cases and parts and it ran for about 35,000 miles with few troubles. Getting everything lined up in the 2 case halves was fun. There are 4 cams in it and its possible to set them wrong and fire 2 cylinders at once. Two 3 cylinder engines tied together. It sounded almost normal but the cam chain would break in about 100 miles. You must have gotten your certification years ago.
People tend to forget how the Japanese in general, and Honda in particular, revolutionised motorcycling in the 60s and 70s. The CB750, Z900, the CBX… multi cylinders, disc brakes, electric start, ohc etc etc. Suddenly the old staid pushrod singles and twins that hadn’t changed since the 30s seemed outdated and old tech. A feeling which persists with me to this day. When I came back to biking after 30 years at age 64, I tried very hard to convince myself to buy a twin from a certain German manufacturer. Then I rode a 20 year old Fazer 1000, and I thought why have two lumpy cylinders when you can have four silky smooth ones? Having watched your video, maybe six would be even nicer! Cheers!
The engine is one of the best ever to come out of Japan. It looks awesome from any angle. I think Honda have one mounted on a display stand at their HQ in Japan.
I worked at Mick Cole Motorcycles for five years, These were his favourite he raced them for Honda at the Castrol 6 hour races here in Australia. Very talented rider even at 60 years old you could see he still had it
Man all the shit about using gauges and agonizing over tiny adjustments is rubbish. Thing is all screws have a known thread pitch. Every turn yields a known distance. You bottom out the throttle stop screws then slightly turn each screw in so the throttle butterfly isn't the throttle stop but the throttle stop the screw is. In this way as a poster below says you can bench set them. It really is very accurate.
I like Steve Fowlers comment about the Cycle Magazine test of the CBX.. I remember it too...the interview with Soichiro Irimijri re the valve train, and the comparison with the KZ 1000. It was brought up that the Kawasaki had a tendency to spit its shims through the cases at high rpms. Soichiro replied, " to see if we had a problem in this area, we put an engine on the dynamometer at WOT, 11,000RPM. There were no problems... a cylinder stud broke after 30 minutes!" At 8500 rpms, fully 1000 rpms below its maximum power output, the CBX makes 6 more horsepower than the KZ 1000. And it's very satisfying to see the car next to you roll their window down, just to hear you go by on the highway! If you have a CBX, keep it. If you can find one, buy it!!!
I owned the first X in Florida and put 126000 on the clock before it was stolen in Orlando. Those of you who brag up other fine makes and Hondas never rode one and never rode one equipped with twin turbos and an air shifter. I crossed the Gandy bridge one night and was clocked at 193 by a wide awake FHP trooper who couldn't come close but recognised me and arrived at my door with a warrant and a wrecker. The fine was 3600.00 and that was 600 more than the bike cost me new
I See for the first time in 1981 i think ? On Chelsea bridge ! A cbx1000 coming a cross the bridge on the back wheel the site and noise I will never forget ! To see this bike for the first time ! The noise and size of this bike had never left me ! Unbelievable
104 bhp out of the crate and tons of weight to blunt the performance by modern standards but nothing will ever sound quite the same. When I was 18 and riding a GT380, this was my ultimate dream bike. I'm now 61 and have a Triumph triple of 150bhp and an S1000RR at 199bhp and whilst both would annihilate the CBX, neither have the character or that fabulous sound - a lost era for bikers . . . . .
I bought a 79 in 84 from a dear friend. It was a incredible machine. My friend bought it new. He has it back now. As it should be. We are still very good friends
The last part of the video around the racetrack is best. Sounded brilliant, like the RC 166 race bike that Mike Hailwood rode. My brother bought one of the first CBXs in Australia back in the late '70s, he's still got it.
I don’t know if you want to buy a six for sentimental reasons, but I bought a Kawasaki Z900RS Jaffa two years ago and honestly, I rather ride that than my brother’s CBX. Looks retro but it’s got all the modern stuff.
Got to be honest never seen one of these on the road but woooowwww they make a great sound the one going round the track on this video was amazing the louder the better the older bikes and cars are so much better than today without a doubt built better and built to last
Saw one at the lights in Glasgow .They changed to green and he took off and pulled a great long wheelie .1984 that was .Great to watch and the noise was so sweet.
I bought a 1981 CBX and she'll be arriving on 3/9/2021 and I can't wait to get her tuned and serviced for the summer months! I do have an 06 vrod that has bigger cams in it with long straight pipes that have her screaming wicked loud, but I can t wait to hear the CBX at red line and the symphony she'll be screaming! No one is going to know what passed them on the open highway! But their after thoughts of Whuuuuuuuuu! Was that? ✌
I read most of the comments about this great bike from the 80s(some polite and proper enthusiasts) and most of them are from people who can barely string a sentence together, clearly have just the one brain cell and completely overlook the fact the bike was designed in the 70s? There you go, 40 odd years in the past with technology that was as good as you could get then given the price point of the bike. Of course a new bike will be better but why slag it off and the person who has taken the trouble to share his passion and put a nice upload together? Where are the videos from all the haters? Sorry, I forgot you never passed a test or owned a bike, silly of me.
A new bike would be sooo much better that when Honda decided to make the CB1100, which is a direct homage to this masterpiece, they elected to do so with a tamer 4-cylinder engine, which, despite the extra 100cc makes only 88 horsepower. Which is still as much horsepower as my 1987 Honda CRX DX(my love💘) made the day she rolled off the factory floor, so you know, ENOUGH for a motorcycle. Just goes to show that no matter how well the designers design, the insurance companies always win.
Dinka Boutit Which motorcycle had only 88hp? Are you talking about the CB900F that had 95hp or the CB1100F that had 110hp? I’ve had lots of miles on all three of these bikes, and the CB1100F was definitely the fastest among them. The 5 extra compared to the CBX’s 105hp felt like 20. Not saying that the CBX wasn’t quick enough, but it delivered the power in a completely different way.
C'mon bro... You can't just stop falling in love with this romantic style.. the golden age restored... Those who dislike it, can't say they are nuts, but don't have the sense of classic tradition of motorbikes industry
I’m never interest in motorcycle but one day if I ever learn how to ride then this is my dream bike. Don’t care what it cost this is the best sounding bike ever made.F1 sounds 😍🔥
These were very heavy, stationary. All that went once it was moving. A chap owned one I knew years back and let me have a short ride on it. Once on a long straight road and safe, just tweak the throttle and the front became very light. It could become scary if it had a mind of it`s own.
The first time i heard a CBX 1000 was at a Motorcycle meet with my dad in the late 90's. I asked something like "Why is there a F1 car here?" He laughed.
I worked at Cycle Sport, Tysons Corner VA back in 1982 as a salesman, the lead mechanic had a 1980 or 81 Stock CBX and let me turn the wheels...Gnarly! David Niess was part owner back in the good-ole-days, Jack Seaver was the previous salesman and he could sell a tricycle to Kenny Roberts !
An amazing sound and one of the best looking bikes ever. I am lucky to have ridden many different bikes in my life but sadly never the CBX. Full time job keeping it clean though !

Sweet sounds of Japan!! I just rebuilt a '92 CB750 chassis with 17K original miles on the engine. Lots of life left in it, as long as I stay away from that track monster. Bet he rides the same way on the street making us all look like idiots. Keep vigilant out there!
I can't imagine the self control it must take to ride that bike on the street and keep your drivers license
Also, where i live there is a law on max dB your bike can produce, i think this is way beyond that

William M Trexler I miss Formula1...the sound of music back in the day
Time to replace yer hearing aid, Jed.
Saw one at the lights in Glasgow .They changed to green and he took off and pulled a great long wheelie .1984 that was .Great to watch and the noise was so sweet.
That sounds pretty smooth!
Was that? ✌
that blue on the pipes really caught my eye! shes a runner.
Que hermoso sonido!!!! Música para mis oídos y gran potencia!!!
Knew a guy who had one. When asked about it the first thing he said was “It drank gas like a flushing toilet”.
They woulda bought one...
they were on their way to the dealers...
Wad o'cash in their hands..
..but then they got stoned.
Dinka Boutit not sure what point are you trying to make, the OP was shaming those who badmouth this bike because they compare it to newer bikes
I'd buy it just so I could listen to it all day
6 цилиндров-это серьезно!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Essa moto é relíquia. Excelente
nice to see I'm not the only one who loves this sound :)
I rode one of these is 1978. Ran pretty good. Rode a bought a V65 magna . It.was quieter, but way Faster!
Honda motorcycle remains sophisticated and has a history and still mastered the magnificence and many fans in it
I Love this SOUND WOW
Super cool osm nice bike hero
You can Say that again, even with the stock exhaust sistem The sound was awsome...CBX beautiful motorcycles...
My girlfriends dad owned this bike, what a bike and what he legend he is..
These were very heavy, stationary. All that went once it was moving. A chap owned one I knew years back and let me have a short ride on it. Once on a long straight road and safe, just tweak the throttle and the front became very light. It could become scary if it had a mind of it`s own.
Perhaps with age, l have come to appreciate the quite excellence of the BMW R69.
A lack of sound in comparison to its contemporaries is admirable.
Época de ouro da Honda
OMG the superbike of my childhood ^^
wow, nice video, i loved the circuit lap in pov. Good pilot also.
What a beautiful symphony this engine makes
The first time i heard a CBX 1000 was at a Motorcycle meet with my dad in the late 90's.
I asked something like "Why is there a F1 car here?"
He laughed.
I Was RedLining Mine In 1985 😎
I worked at Cycle Sport, Tysons Corner VA back in 1982 as a salesman, the lead mechanic had a 1980 or 81 Stock CBX and let me turn the wheels...Gnarly!
David Niess was part owner back in the good-ole-days, Jack Seaver was the previous salesman and he could sell a tricycle to Kenny Roberts !
Music to my ears 🎧
Wish i have one. Will be smiling always hearing that beautiful addicting sound.hehe
Beautiful voice!
I just want to buy this for insane sound she makes.

An amazing sound and one of the best looking bikes ever. I am lucky to have ridden many different bikes in my life but sadly never the CBX. Full time job keeping it clean though !

Being 70 years old I remember when these motorcycles came out
Being 60 years old I do too!... My uncle bought one new in early 1969 and rode it over to our house to show us... Man that thing was Cool... being only 9 at the time, I had to wait, But I've had dozens of them, I currently own 5..... 3:)
70s and 80s Japanese bikes are incredible. Please save and restore
A pure beast! Love it!
That said, I have to say that I like strong accelerations, but I don't like high speeds, especially on two wheels.
safer, goin easy .. enjoy riding
Especially with Max Rockatansky a few inches from your 6.
che moto! la CBX 1000 .... oggi non ne fanno più di così belle!
Se eu tivesse uma igual a esta jamais venderia!!!!!!
Sweet sounds of Japan!! I just rebuilt a '92 CB750 chassis with 17K original miles on the engine. Lots of life left in it, as long as I stay away from that track monster. Bet he rides the same way on the street making us all look like idiots. Keep vigilant out there!
японцы отморозки в хорошем смысле) , такой стрекотоплан построить)
Спиздили Яву
И представь как настраивать эти 6 карбюраторов, что бы все работали в такт.
I had a 1980 CBS 1100 candy apple red. Awesome bike. Sold it after doing 150 mph.
Love this beast!
Sounds like a monster but
Tank looking like CD 100
