This game brings back so many great memories. Back in 1990 my best friend and I both got Game Boys, and he was all in. He had loads of the original games, so we traded back and forth a lot. We both spent so much time on games like Operation C, Mario Land, Nemesis, Castlevania and Skate or Die. And sure, they were basically downgraded ports, but it was so great that they were, for the most part, unique games within the series. Plus I've always loved the sprite work on the Game Boy. Great video!
Great review. Thanks for this video. I only wish you could've been my brother in the 80s knocking out this game with me! I would've loved help from someone who was this serious and passionate about the contra legacy series of game like you! Contra was one of my all time favs to play especiAlly in the arcades
The Gameboy seems to be getting a little under-rated these days as a serious console. Some of the games were excellent and sometimes better than their NES counterparts. We were still in Probotector world in the UK when this released here. I played it a couple of times. Never owned one though. I should go seek it out. Been on a bit of a Contra/Probotector thing recently, did a quick video of me being terrible at Probotector the other day. The games are tough but I always feel like each death is pretty fair. The game gives you plenty of ways to avoid being hit and certainly enough ways to hit back. The Megadrive/Genesis one was always my favourite.
Mellow Gaming [Try4ce] Bionic Commando in particular surprised me. Excellent level design, amazing new music, a case could absolutely be made for it being better than the NES version.
I never played that one. In the mood for collecting up some random retro games so I made add that to my searches. I hadn't seen that Kid icarus one before. I had always assumed the GB game was pretty much the NES game but that looked quite different.
Mellow Gaming [Try4ce] Yeah, it's definitely a full-on sequel. The gameplay is very similar, but the levels and story are new (not that there's much story, really, but the premise and bad guy are different). Interestingly, it was not released in Japan until the Virtual Console on 3DS, but the original cart came to both North America and Europe.
***** I'm definitely not what you'd call an expert on Bionic Commando but I found the GB game easier to control than the console counterpart. Capcom's GB lineup is overall pretty solid. Honestly I think the Mega Man games are some of the worst in the lineup and that's saying something. Ducktales I & II, Darkwing Duck, and Gargoyles Quest are all great titles.
Seems to be fairly decently priced. As in under £10. Probotector seems to be cheap soon. Just saw that there was a GB version of Contra 3 too. That must have lost something in the translation. Most of the GB games I played were either the standard ones everyone had or all the random licensed games. Still have Tiny Toon Adventures and Terminator 2 The Arcade game on my GB. Yup, the Arcade game. As in the lightgun game ported to the GB. It's a mess.
This game is super nostalgic for me. In Europe we called it Probotector and it had cool robots and staff..great gameplay and music! It got me through some difficult times when I had some health issues as a child.
Hey look a video on the one Contra game I have beaten. I think that had to do a lot with the fact that it's, like you said, a slower paced game and the fact I got it as my "new" (was a used copy) game for a vacation one year.
YourPalSal [Try4ce] Having finished the game now, it almost seems silly it took me as long as it did... I spent about 5 or 6 hours across two days trying to beat it... for what's about a 30 minute game. It doesn't seem all that hard, especially compared to a lot of the other Contra games, but I kept having problem spots.
Oh yeah.. this brings back good memories. My favorite weapon always the spread shot. The double "S" spread did make the weapon awesome. 6:15 i remember this one, and I thought that I am the only one thinks that the platform going to squash the player :)
You can always use the 9 live code in Operation C. It's always great that you can unlock NES games Contra and Super C in Contra 4, because the Nintendo DS rules. Enjoy all the "retro" gaming, it's the only way to game.
tonk82 [Try4ce] Unfortunately, those compilations were not released in North America. I believe that some of the games in those compilations were otherwise not brought out of Japan... like one of the Goemon (Mystical Ninja) games. Not too sure if there are other examples.
***** Yeah, they were not released in USA. I own all 4 volumes. The goemon game is fantastic, i cant remember which other ones were exclusive. Some games were new though, guttang guttong, frogger, yie ar kung fu and antartic adventure, seem to be new versions of the arcades. And games like track&field lost some levels. Very weird xD
Gonçalo Tordo [Try4ce] Having not owned a Genesis until recent years, and with Hard Corps having no ports, it was one of my retro gaming holy grails for years. People never talked about it as much as other games in the series, so I was concerned that it might not live up to my hopes... but it did not disappoint. You very well may be right... a strong argument could be made for it being the best one.
***** I haven't played Contra 4 or the Wiiware exclusive Contra (can't remember its name) so I can't comment on those two. But for my money, Contra Hardcorps is the best game series. I've seen many people who don't care for it, citing an extreme difficulty even by Contra standards. While Contra Hardcorps is a bit harder than your average Contra I have to say, I have yet to play ANY run n' gun as good as that game. 4 characters, multiple paths, 5 endings times 4 characters, a secret ending. Lots of guns, lots of enemy variety, and the action never lets up. It's amazing that the more I play it the more I love it, lol.
Gonçalo Tordo [Try4ce] The variety in it is truly staggering, indeed. Shattered Soldier (PS2) is the hardest game in the series. I beat it on the default difficulty, but there are two additional levels if you play it on higher difficulty settings... I can't even imagine. The WiiWare game is Contra ReBirth it's... not bad, but it's not the best, and it's very VERY weird.
***** Yeah I've heard the Wiiware one wasn't great. I also tried Hardcorps on the PS3, made by System ArcWorks. I have to say though, I was disappointed, it didn't have the speed of the original and I'd argue it wasn't as varied. It was a good game, but it felt like a different series.
Gonçalo Tordo [Try4ce] Coury and I actually had a ton of fun playing Hard Corps Uprising co-op online. While it's true that the rules of the game feel a bit different, I think it has the Contra spirit in a lot of ways.
The Game Grinder [Try4ce] Found mine for just $10! It's not expensive, but I've also not seen it around too many times. I saw a boxed copy for $100 once though, yikes!
I noticed the ground looked different on NES Contra. I figured it might be the Japanese version you were using there, so I loaded it up to confirm. Nice!
KarbuncleX [Try4ce] Yeah, Contra on the Famicom has a ton of nice visual touches that the NES Contra simply lacks for some completely unknown reason. The gameplay is the same, but the Famicom version is the definitive version of the game. The Famicom cart is hiding to the left of the NES cart in that one shot. ;)
***** Indeed! I noticed the jungle has animation in the canopy, and there's really nice transitions scenes between each round. I think the difference is due to racism. Back then, the Japanese had this 'thing' about how their version must be technically better than foreign releases. Of course I'm sarcastically joking about all this, but something to consider was when Final Fantasy VII came out for the USA, it was technically better than the Japanese version and had bonus content. What did the Japanese do? They immediately re-released the game to include all the content the US version got. That would never have happened the other way around. :-P
+John Hand [Try4ce] Those are some of the harder ones! I've only beaten Shattered Soldier on Normal. I think there are two more levels if you play on hard and get a high rank each level. Don't expect to ever do that myself!
I've also been regaining interest in some handheld games. I've mostly been looking into jrpg's on the GBA. What are some other Game Boy games that you've recently gotten a renewed interest in? Also, what did you use to play this game? Was this off an emulator or the Gamecube's GBA Player through the framemeister?
ShogunGin0 [Try4ce] This was actually Super Game Boy (Super Game Boy 2 to be specific) on the SNES, I gave it a black border and used the Framemeister to scale it up to fill the screen. I remember liking FF Legend III, but I never finished it, and sold it to help save up for a PS1. Recently, I've re-bought FFLIII, and bought the first FFL... I haven't started them yet, but I believe they're simple but good JRPGs. I recently tried Ninja Gaiden Shadow at a friend's house, and really liked it... different, but very good. It's a little more expensive for a GB game, though. I'm not too sure about Castlevania: The Adventure, but Belmont's Revenge seems to have potential. Of course, I showed Game Boy Bionic Commando and Kid Icarus in the video, both of which are excellent, especially Bionic Commando.
***** Thanks. I seem to remember the Super Game Boy having a different color palette than what you had, like a semi red color, or something, that's why I thought it was the GBA Player. I know the Final Fantasy Legends games are technically part of the SaGa series, but renamed for greater Western appeal. I'll have to look more into those. In contrast, I recommend Final Fantasy Adventure, which was just supposed to be a spin-off of FF, but it became the first of the Seiken Densetsu/Mana series, remade as Sword of Mana for the GBA, and I recommend that. Also, you're streaming on Sundays now, right?
ShogunGin0 [Try4ce] The default Super Game Boy color is kinda orange/red/purple, which I kinda like, but for video recordings, I've been using the last color scheme on the fourth page of color defaults, which seems to be going for a greenish Game Boy look. I've actually played Sword of Mana, and although it seems to get a bad rap, I seem to recall thinking it wasn't a bad game at all. I'd be curious to try the original version sometime. And yup, we're doing streams on Sunday nights at 9 EST!
Oh yeah, Operation C is really good! You know another Game Boy game like this that's really good that not many people talk about? Ninja Gaiden Shadow. That game is easy and short but darn it's sweet and it sounds amazing!
Ruko Michiharu [Try4ce] I actually either never knew about Ninja Gaiden Shadow, or completely forgot about it, until just a few weeks ago. A friend got a copy for a good deal (it's actually sort of expensive for a Game Boy game). I tried out his copy, and was very impressed! It doesn't play quite like NES Ninja Gaiden, but it was very well designed and super fun. I didn't wanna stop playing! I'm definitely gonna keep an eye out for that one, I just hope I don't have to pay too much!
+My Life in Gaming If I'm not mistaken the game was originally supposed to be a port of shadow of the ninja on nes. Then they changed the title to ninja gaiden but the gameplay remains more reminiscent to shadow of the ninja.
Never played Operation C... then again it was probably under the name Probotector over here. I will have to check it out as I really enjoy the original Probotector and quite like Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. Could I throw out there that you guys check out "Quest: Brian's Journey" a demake title of Quest 64... Think it works better than its source :) Also is there any chance either of you will be jumping into FFXIV for the next expansion on the 23rd?
Sk4zZi0uS [Try4ce] Apparently the European version is simply called "Probotector," no number or subtitle or anything. I actually sort of like Quest 64 (I don't love it, but I think it's more interesting than it's given credit for being), and it wasn't too long ago that I rediscovered the existence of the Game Boy game. It looks a lot different in some clips I watched... actual events and stuff happening. I wouldn't mind dabbling in a few random Game Boy RPGs. I got tired of MNK, so I spent a few months very VERY slowly getting WAR to 50. I haven't done much since then, but obviously I need to talk to Minfillia to get the ball rolling on the continued storyline so I can actually do stuff in Heavensward. Though I'm concerned about how difficult it could be to get gear that will actually get me through to that point (gear that is going to be outdated so fast there's probably no reason to get it other than iLevel barriers).
Excellent review on this game. I've never played it myself. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the Gameboy. Never had one as a kid and therefore have zero nostalgia for the console. That said, I am aware that there are many great titles. Just have trouble getting into them. Perhaps one day that will change. Cheers.
DavetheNESGuy [Try4ce] Definitely play Donkey Kong (or DK '94 as people tend to call it). It's completely different from the arcade game, and is an incredible puzzle-platformer. Mario & Donkey Kong on the GBA is a spiritual successor, with similar gameplay, but is rather soulless in its presentation. But I do have to admit, once the GBA hit, I didn't have much interest in the original Game Boy aside from Link's Awakening and Donkey Kong (and Wario Land, I guess). Same goes for souls games... they are not that hard.... challenging at most and I am not even good at them. If you are failing to beat a boss then it means your approach is wrong.
This game brings back so many great memories. Back in 1990 my best friend and I both got Game Boys, and he was all in. He had loads of the original games, so we traded back and forth a lot.

+Muhan C.A. Thank you very much!
Game Boy is the most underrated console, bar OgXbox.
100% agree. Good Contra game for the Game Boy. The system is full of quite underrated games.
Bionic Commando on GB may be my favorite all-time game. Much different from the NES or arcade versions.
Great little game. I love that robot boss that shoots his claw hands out at you. Always exciting to see a new MLiG pop up on the feed!
I remember getting the game for my 10th birthday. I played the hell out of it. Still one of my favorites.

I just beat this game, and it is soooo good!

It was included in the excellent Konami GB collection vol. 1, btw. For the GBC, with added color.

Was the spread shot upgrade not in Super C?
+Reaperman4711 [Try4ce] Yep, it's in Super C!
Someone should do a fanmade remake of Operation C
this channel is neat
Good to know, especially with Contra 4. I just started replaying it a while ago, and I probably suck more at these games than you. Couldn't even beat the first level after the first few times. :\
MoonSpiritExp [Try4ce] Contra 4 is definitely one of the harder ones (nowhere near as hard as Shattered Soldier), but it's sooooo good.
Is there any way to save progress on operation c?
Darryl Ramos [Try4ce] Nope, and that's the general rule for all Contra games. It's a short game, designed to be something that you learn over the course of multiple attempts. Once you've learned it, it takes less than 30 minutes to beat.
Contra 4 the best game in the series? I guess if you don't count Hard Corps: Uprising...
spman2099 [Try4ce] Hard Corps Uprising is pretty great too! Definitely a different sort of game in the series, but people shouldn't overlook it. It's such a shame there's no physical copy available. I really enjoyed it.

Hope to see a video on Contra 4 one day. I agree, it's the best in the series!
rd1979 [Try4ce] If I ever get a DS/3DS capture module, that'd probably be one of the top videos that I'd want to make with it.
watch some more avgn videos and thats how people get the false sense of difficulty
Same goes for souls games... they are not that hard.... challenging at most and I am not even good at them. If you are failing to beat a boss then it means your approach is wrong.
Bullshit. "Dual spirits" is not the best game due to atrocious dead zone between screens. "Shattered Soldier" and "Hard Corps" are way better.
I also enjoy Operation U, N, and T as well.
