I was LDS (Mormon) for a while. They believed they were the only true church in the world. I'd rather be Mennonite. I did officially leave in 2010. I'm mainstream Christian now. I love Acts, one of my favorite books of the Bible.

In my area we are near a Swartzentruber community, who live as strictly as any Anabaptist order. I could live their way, but I don't think I could raise children "outside the world," so to speak. I couldn't make that choice for someone else.

Baptized members have to live a strict church life, but their children are allowed to run free with the world.
Unfortunately that has been the cause of their low numbers.

That's a very wise perspective! I also believe that there are at least a few genuine followers of Christ in each Christian denomination, too, even though the official stance of my Church is it's the true one and I see the doctrine of my denonination making more sense than some doctrinal stances of other denominations. I also believe there are "tares", so to speak, in each one including my own, too. As long as they are genuinely trying to live a Christ-like lifestyle, no matter the denomination, I will view them as brothers and sisters in Christ and treat them as such.

I Just wish that the more Conservative Amish could be more loving and accepting of their fellow saved Christians and not assume that Non Amish are all heathens. The Amish in my area of Central Virginia are very cold hearted towards the "English" members of the community. About the only time you can get a smile out of them is when you make their cash register ring when you buy something in their stores and when you speak kindly to them it's like they are almost biting their own lip to force a smile. Even though i was raised Amish from a very old and original dying Mountain Amish Community of Virginia and now wear English clothing out of economy and speak a little Penn. Dutch, I'm ostracized and ignored when i attempt to connect with them. It's as though they are assuming that i am Shunned because i am not 100% like them.

Most Amish may believe that there are other Christian people in the world... But my impression is that many/most Amish also believe that the Amish way is the one right way... It seems their entire culture is built upon this premise that Amish lifestyle will give you the best chance at eternal life -- and everyone else is either wrong or on a less certain path. Hence, all the pressure to follow the rules, join the church, and make a lifetime commitment to their church, community, and lifestyle...

I have another question for you as a Man who has lived with and studied these wonderful Amish people. I have seen many other videos on the Amish and in the comments I have seen several people that think the Amish abuse their horses both by starvation and over working them till their nothing more than good for the slaughter house. I only know my small Amish Order here in Northern Michigan and all the horses and Mules belonging to these families are very well cared for. I believe and have told these haters that they simply don't know what they are talking about. Is this something that you have ever seen

    • @AmishAmerica
      @AmishAmerica  8 місяців тому +2

There may be some truth to this at least in some communities. So I had a similar response to yours years ago when I first heard about this. It didn't "fit" with the idea I had of the Amish as a generally thoughtful people who should at least be practical about horses from a monetary/resources sense. And a lot of Amish people, like any people, grow attached to and affectionate towards their horses. I even have a story of how Ben demonstrated this to me showing deep concern for one of his horses which had an emergency situation, just this past week when we were on a call. I think that is more the norm - as you'd expect! But that said, there are bad apples and not only that, bad habits/practices that perpetuate when you have a large enough group of people.
Have I ever been present on the scene when this has happened? No. But you do hear enough accounts of it (and I've seen suggestive photos before) that I wouldn't doubt that it happens with some. Thanks for your question. This is one we might consider addressing in a future discussion with Ben.

I think the Amish regard horses as machinery /tools for work and transportation. This upsets those who regard horses more like pets so they disagree when many Amish sell older horses thru auctions. I drove taxi for my local Amish Community for 10 years and never saw neglect but did see a lot of working horses. Also saw a couple really luxury barns where registered Belgians and fancy driving horses were raised as the family business. I'm in north eastern Ohio😊

I left the OO Amish church 16 years ago. It took that long for me to understand, I want the Bible to be true, but I can’t make any of the stories be irrefutably true. I will not take part in making its prophecies come true.
A Hindu scripture says, I am time, the destroyer of worlds. That could mean generations. It also refers to kin and friends as already being dead, the destiny of the soul of the said person depends on fulfilling the physical death of them. Kind of matches the NT. Sadly, written by men who had no children, probably never saw the love a mother dotes on her little ones.
I can identify families where religion was ultimate on both sides, one side, and where they worked together, and left religion where it belongs. Not in the homes.
Lineages were destroyed, and others are families that are quite wealthy. If they can continue to hand down such work ethics and competence, there’s hope for their great, great, great, grandchildren to have what they had. Support for their rights to have children without guilt, shame, or regrets.

❤️❤️❤️I lived next door to an old lady who told my mother our family were all going to hell because we were in the Baptist church and we should be in her Church of Christ. My Mother stayed in tears over her nonsense. Everyone needs to live and be in God’s will. If you walkout a life based on Psalms 119 you are in God’s will and will live with Him forever in Heaven. A True Believer better not expect a Church to save them! You better believe in what Jesus Christ who shed his blood on a cross at Calvary to redeem the Sin of all mankind. If you deny that you and everyone else will go to hell.

I usually only use this with Atheists who "claim" religions drove them to that conclusion and, Oh yes they did read the WHOLE Bible. " You may have gone in the doors of a building ( home or meeting house/barn), but you never let the Guest that all others brought in their hearts into yours." I'm not able to join my local Mennonite Church, but I attend as often as I may and am welcomed.

Oh my, so sorry to hear that. There is quite a spectrum of Mennonites, so experiences can vary quite a lot from Mennonite USA to Eastern to Holdeman to Stauffer to Reformed Mennonite, et al... it seems like there'd be a happy place for everyone within that spectrum. 😑

Why does an incorporeal spiritual being give a rats behind that you wear outmoded clothing or this color suspender or that?? If you believe that, then your god is simply way too petty and small.

Eric, talk is cheap! I would suggest looking at the actions! I had a conversation with you @15 years ago in my place of business. I was an Amish man then and I probably would have talked the same way back. If that was true what he said they would fellowship with other believers! After 40+ years of being Amish, God opened my eyes to the brain washing and hypocrisy of the Amish cult! They say it's just a life style but when we leave they no longer fellowship with us! No Ben is not being truthful, you need to ask harder and deeper questions!

I don't appreciate when people come in making demands. Maybe you can relate in your own business.
Or, calling one of my best friends "not truthful". Ben gave a thoughtful answer to what he was asked. You appear to be angry b/c we didn't do the discussion on shunning and so on that you personally wanted.
I do appreciate thoughtful follow-ups. But grind axes somewhere else please.

@@AmishAmerica I lived that life, I know Amish people in many different states, and i still consider them my friends. I have a book here that i bought from you and on the inside of the cover it says you are a "noted expert on the Amish". I don't care if you label yourself like that but I am here to tell you, I and many others know a side to the Amish that you will never see or experience because you didn't grow up in it! no matter how good friends you are. As I said before, at one time I would have answered like Ben did. To the utube world, Ben's answers paint a false picture of the Amish belief system! I am by no means angry, but choose to present the truth! Try going to church with Ben and having communion in his church 😎😎
