America's All-In-One Killer Helicopter of the Future

- In October 2023, Sikorsky captured attention at a defense show by unveiling the RAIDER X, their latest helicopter prototype. This isn't just another addition to the fleet; it's designed to fill specific gaps in the U.S. Army's capabilities-especially those left by the aging Apache and Kiowa helicopters.
The RAIDER X stands as a leap forward, offering not just unprecedented reach, survivability, and lethality. It can even carry more payload than its predecessors, proving that size isn't everything.
But the RAIDER X offers more than just enhanced capabilities. Its unique design features two stacked main rotors rotating in opposite directions, along with a rear push rotor, which makes this aircraft seem torn from the pages of science fiction. Its cutting-edge configuration provides the RAIDER X with unmatched advantages in combat, particularly in challenging environments like Vietnam's dense jungles.
As geopolitical tensions escalate in the Indo-Pacific region, the race is on among global aviation giants to secure the U.S. Army's next contract for advanced helicopters. At the center of it all is Sikorsky's RAIDER X, vying to become the U.S. Army's next go-to helicopter.

Dark Footage showcases the most unbelievable photos and videos from history while telling the stories behind the camera. Featuring military, space, aircraft and real-life historic events caught on tape.
I'm giving this a thumbs up simply because the Huey is featured at the beginning.
I used to be a Huey Crewchief. 😀
hell yea
Tell me your age without telling me your age. Never got to ride a Huey, but the H-60S were fun to jump from. I was a paratrooper. It was the lightest jump. Better even than the Chinook.
I thought the military went with the other design in the competition... the Bell Textron's V-280 Valor over the Raider X... are they both being built? or was that a different contract competition?
The Valor was picked over the SB1 Defiant. It's a larger aircraft than the Raider X.
The valor won the transport contract. This is a contract for a new scout helicopter.
That contest was to replace the Blackhawk
This one will be a replacement for the retired Kiowa (scout helicopter)
The Apache has been filling in for this role but its overkill and more operationally costly.
So Raider X vs Bell 360 Invictus
It was the invictus vs this ugly pos.
Invictus ftw for anything other than scouting.
Looks like a flying sub!
I remember seeing the 1980 version during flight school at Rucker. It land3d a Guthrie Field across the street from my barracks. As I watched it make low passes I couldn’t help but think about the vibration and noting the jet engines placed like a Lear Jet on the fuselage. 42 years later I think the design is exactly what we need
Background music volume is too loud .. making your voice more difficult to hear.
As I understood it, NASA and DARPA funded research with Carter Aviation Technologies for the CarterCopter. This was to create a replacement or alternative to the V22 Osprey. The idea was to build an aircraft that was a combination of a Gyroplane and a Helicopter.
The problem with rotorcraft is that there's a maximum speed that cannot be exceeded as the tips of the rotors approach the speed of sound. There's two ways to get around this. The first was to have 'wings' and then place a rotor at the end of these wings which could be rotated in flight to allow the craft to take off vertically and then travel faster than the limit speed when in horizontal flight. That solution led to the V22 Osprey.
The alternative was a novel solution of having a single rotor and a pusher prop as seen in this video. Only that would not overcome the need of having a tail rotor, unless the aircraft was a gyroplane and it only used the engines to power up to the lift speed, then disconnected as it 'jumped' into the air and then went into autorotation and was pushed forward. Cartercopter actually built two demonstrators to prove this by converting a Butterfly Monarch gyroplane so it could jump takeoff. They then built another experimental gyroplane that could use Slowed Rotor / Compound technology which meant that the main rotor could be slowed in flight so that the tips of the blades never went over the speed of sound and small wings would provide the lift in forward flight.
The end goal was to try and produce a much larger aircraft that had multiple propulsion props on wings feeding into one main rotor. The speed of the propulsion props could be adjusted to counter the contrarotation so you would not need a tail rotor and in horizontal flight the main rotor would slow down sufficiently so that the wings would provide lift and the speed increased past the limit point. There are a number of videos showing this concept in CGI graphics but there are also a lot of videos of the experimental aircraft that Carter Aviation made to test the idea. They did achieve a record by exceeding mU-1 from slowing the rotor in flight.
As far as I am aware, Carter Aviation sold the slowed rotor technology and has started pure research.
This design has absolutely nothing to do with Cartercopter. It is based on Sikorsky's X2 prototype, which was based on research made on the S-69. Cartercopter is not even in the wheel house of this aircraft.
US & India should collaborate on this platform as India also needed 400+ of 5ton playload helicopters this will not only lower the development but also the production cost.. Indo-pacific is the region where both countries will eventually fight
Killer Helicopter? Imagine being the test pilot for the first ejection seat on the KA-52! Killer program!
The "wow" reel used in this looks like a C&C cutscene
Loving the Raider-X, but Bell's submission looks like it would be a great UAV version.
If enough can’t be produced quickly, we’d be like WWII Germany with too many projects to manage.
Military made a mistake going with not going with the Raider X.
Oh hey I used to work on these... Pretty cool!
Failure to pronounce Kiowa does not help credibility...but the fact that FARA was cancelled just adds to a long list of Dark Blunders. 😂
let me introduce you to a 200 dollars drone lol
in 2002ish i found a aviation engineering blog about the comanche and they ripped it apart. knew it wasnt gonna work.
but a lot of people joined up hoping to fly it.
remember they said a three blade design was most stealthy. im guessing the stealth from this is just gonna be from flying low and fast.
I looks cool but i can foresee so many logistical problems that will render it useless.
Looks like a copy from Russia k52 alligator... might be more modern but the rotor technology is very similar...
At 1:28 over 12,000 models server in Nam? I think you mean there were 12K Heli's in Nam (prob more like 8 diff models)
... models served* in Vietnam. 12K helis* (plural, no apostrophe)
The entire FARA program was cancelled last week. This helicopter will never fly and this entire video is moot.
Sorry
The music though... no
You're still pronouncing "KEEohwa" 🙄😐...
hmmmm...back during the onset of vietnam we had a similar situation. that time it was lockheed's AH-56 Cheyenne vs. Bell"s Huey based Cobra, which through corruption and other manipulations of policies caused the inevitable winner to be the much maligned Cobra...this time it's not much different. the sikorsky (lockheed) raider is a much better aircraft, just like the cheyenne, and the invictus is nothing more than an updated bell huey/cobra...watch the politicians bank accounts that are in charge of this cause i have a feeling we may see a repeat of the cobra cheyenne debacle.
Umm, I thought the V-280 already won.
The valor won the transport contract. This is a contract for a new scout helicopter.
Kamov
I thought the Army chose the tilt rotor Valor over this?
Two different programs. The Bell V-280 will replace the Blackhawk. Either the Raider X or the Bell Invictus will be a scout helicopter as I understand it.
China already stole tge design
I love how the Yanks just blow past the fact the Russians created the double rotor Alligator decades ago --- MERUCA FOOK YEAH hahaha
... do you say X country is copying Germany anytime they make a jet? no... didn't think so. Also the first coaxial helicopter flew in France in the 1930s... so idk what you are on.
@@n3v3rforgott3n9 Pretty sure the first military version of the double rotor is the Russian Alligator and this guy made out like it was some new amazing inversion by the US Military - So if you want to ignore what he said and go on yr little patriotic rant, have at it matey, were used to Americans claiming they invented everything or did everything first lol
@@ronnymcdonald2543 "Americans claiming they invented everything or did everything first lol"
...
Other than clickbait titles where is this being said?
Sounds like you have your own form of bias here :). Also if you look into it the rigid rotor coaxial system it is very different from what the Russians use or previous coaxial helicopters use. Also no need to copy a system that has had 40%+ of its entire fleet shot down in 2 years LMAO.
Where are the LIVE videos? Enough Air ACES cartoon combat!
BACK TO THE DRAWING TABLE!
bad propaganda is bad
The epitome of helicopter design. And still can't fly as far, or as fast as or carry as much as a tiltrotor, which is why Raider X lost the competition to the V-280.😊
Comanche wannabe
The person running this channel, is no military expert. He just needs your views, to pay his bills.
The voice you hear, isn't even a real person, it seems. Speech Synthesis, using the original actor/narrator voice, controlled by AI? Probably.
This ☝️
Yes, he makes factual mistakes sometimes, but at least he has a great voice and doesn't use the horrible voice-overs using fake computerized voices that can't even pronounce the words.
@DetroitMicroSound and clearly you aren’t an English major
In that short statement, you just demonstrated that I have a better grasp than you do. 🤣@@1-AB
You don’t realize there is a research writing team and a separate narrator.
Dark Footage, the American propaganda you spin is nothing short of amazing. The Russian KA-52 which was introduced in 2008 was and still is the first and substantial twin blade helicopter used for non transport related duties. It wouldn't surprise me if Sikorsky are using data/copying from any KA-52's downed during the Ukrainian/Russian war.
I could be wrong but I thought this helicopter lost out to the V-280 Valor tilt rotor built by Bell. Think they won the contract last December of 2023. And the Valor is supposed to be replacing a whole bunch of helicopters. Unless this is being used for something else Ive not heard of?
Two programs running simultaneously(Albeit slowly) is FARA and FLRAA. This vid is for FARA which is small compact helo for city insertions and attack. Raider X will easily win this compared to the Bell Invictus version as Raider X is faster in the air, in the insertion(can go from full speed to full stop in half a mile(claimed of course)), and has superior hovering efficiency for fuel, so will stay on station a LONGER period of time... and has a smaller footprint so can technically insert into smaller areas though in reality they are identical sized. V280 won the Future LONG RANGE assault aircraft competition, not FARA. It would not surprise me if there are more FARA helo's built than FLRAA as FARA can also be used on ships more easily than the v280, or ship design will just have to CHANGE to accommodate the V280(what actually should happen with a v280 naval variant(but probably will not)
@@w8stral Got ya. Thought it might be something like that.
The Aging Apache? Bro, the Marines are still using COBRAS.
Yes, but they're now called, "Vipers".
@@spydude38 They're now called* Vipers. Neither commas nor quotation marks needed.
Just a small point. Kiowa is properly pronounced "Kai-yo-wa"
This channel uses "Bot Narration". A computer reads text and then turns it into speech using a particular voice. I have heard this particular "voice" on two other entirely unrelated channels, this is certainly one of the better Bot voices but some words still come out weird. Also this channel and it's sister channels produce massively repetitive content, a fair amount of which is speculation, and some of which is simply false. A few months ago I unsubscribed from all three of these channels after watching literally a hundred of their videos and found far superior channels instead. I am only here because the YT algorithm popped it up and I thought I would watch it, the first one for 3+ months.
@@ADB-zf5zr I don't know about that, his voice pronounces words that are hard for bot voices to pronounce without problems. The way he says "Pon-zer" instead of "Pan-zer" or "Key-o-wa" instead of "Ki-o-wa". Its also been the same voice from jump, back when bot voices were not as "good" as they are now.
***UPDATE*** This program was just recently cancelled. They're focusing more on drone technology now. These helicopters are currently grounded unless another round of funding revives them.
😂😂kiowa not kee-oh-wa😂
It kinda irked me to hear it said the wrong way.. Even the upside down lawnmower deserves more respect..
😉
Gadfly here 😕. Lets hope we can find a way to provide healthcare for all besides just this😶🌫️🥶
So how much did LockMart pay you for this promotion? Because your script just jumps out as fed to you by this company…
Nope. This didn't not get past the demonstrator phase and the entire project was cancelled by the US Army
The US military turned this potential program down. 🤷♂
0:52 Christ, we’re going back to Vietnam?! 😂
I'm still not a fan of the coaxial rotor. Reminds me of the Russian helicopters
Didn’t watch full video..🤦🏻♂️ removed previous comment.
MD530F, Viper and Apache variants still in use today. This is a multirole helo and not to replace the others.
It willl
@@w8stral The Raider X MAY replace the Apache and the Little Bird but the Viper is primarily used by the Marines. This is a US Army program. The Viper 'could' be replaced by this at some point but there are currently no procurement plans to do so. The Marines got their latest batch of Vipers a few years ago, so they'll be around for a while.
Yea, Marines get hind teat historically. Vipers... sure... FARA bird won't even be operational until 2030's... @@rvboyett
Uh hem... Bell v247 will replace Viper. Currently Viper cannot keep up with V22 OR the marines Ch53K. It is utterly obsolete and a waste of money. @@rvboyett
They went with tilt rotors in the Army's unending attempt to get rid of the "no fixed wing" agreement. I fully support getting rid of the no fixed wing regulation, but I think they messed their pants not picking up the Raider and Defiant.
It would be interesting to see the cost comparison between Bell 360 and Raider X per helicopter.
People complain about the V 280 being too complicated.
Like the Raider X or Defiant with a contra rotating blade, and push prop design is any less complicated! I'd love to see the drive train on this.
An engineers wet dream, and a mechanics worse nightmare, hah.
The presicion needed is insane. I've seen diagrams of the Soviets, and it is pretty cool.
Wonder why they couldn't go hybrid. Can have all the rotors you want with way easier maintenence. Axial flux motors are pretty insane. There is one by Helix UK that is 52 pounds for 800 hp. I don't know if you can scale it up, but someone should try.
@@dianapennepacker6854 Because you will not get the capability needed for a military aircraft by going electric.
it looks like a flying submarine
Got cancelled unfortunately
Oof… this did Not Age Well
not first
What got me and irked me beyond extremes was just how crappy the CGI was. That and not even one mockup of either helo, the Dark series videos sure have fallen in quality lately.
Can someone PLEASE teach this narrator how to properly pronounce words. Its Kiowa, Ki-o-wa, not Key-o-wa for fucks sake!
Stop crapping on the Apache. The AH-64E is the best attack helicopter on the planet and is incredibly modern. There are no other helicopters in the world that can compete. We’re not talking about the A model here.
I am willing to bet this Sikorsky will be likely be cancelled before it gets to service.
Kill the background music 🎶 please
Raider X was part of the Army's FARA program to replace the Kiowa helicopter.. FARA was cancelled yeasterday. Raider X will remain a protype and we won't see it fly in large numbers.
How’s this really going to do against high-speed kamakazi drones? I feel like speed and maneuverability would be its only defense. That and some sort of detection system
Useless, in the near future a thing like this will be downed in few minutes by swarms of cheap plastic drones with a 1kg frag warhead all piloted by AI
Potentially they could make swarms of hundreds or thousands that attack suddenly rising from the ground like a bee nest
Ian will talk about this in his forgotten weapons show. cost and maintenance man hours will kill this bird. look no further than the RAH-66.
This would have been a great video without the loud, awful background music.
Another thing we don't need. I want the damn government to run fiber optic internet access to every house, not blow more billions on stupid aircraft. Good vid though, as usual, but every time I see one of these things I think we're on the hook for it.
This has to be the dumbest looking chopper in the American fleet. Why does it need the silly pusher propeller?Another target for sams.
Well, I guess this proves that the Russians were right all along. They have had counter-rotating helicopters a long time. I saw on over Berlin a long time ago.
This lost the competition. Not only is it not going to be the next workhorse of the military, it didn't even make the grade. Click bait video.
ฉันยังไม่ได้ยินข่าวว่ากองทัพบกสหรัฐคัดเลือกรุ่นไหนแต่เราก็ยินดีที่จะร่วมงาน
These helicopters for the US army where cancelled due to Ukraine and the fact that America is in a 30 sum odd trillion dollars in debt 😮
Great helicopter - too bad the Army is canceling this project and will not be buying any new machines.
this is not the chopper in your thumbnail, i never thought these channels would start click baiting their vids. big thumbs down
The fara program has been canceled, due to the new tactics of manpads and drones. These conventional vertical lift systems are a liability
*Makes videos of things he has no knowledge on*
I hate it cause anybody with a mic and a laptop can make videos and ppl think its facts...
Ukraine was shows flat landscapes are very difficult to seige. 😢😢😢
Aaaaaaaand canceled
VERY BAD COPY of the Russian Ka-52 Alligator!
It will get blocked again by the airforce becauae that's what happens when the chairforce gets upset
...and it is easily knocked out of the sky by one soldier on the ground, with a shoulder fired missile.
Too bad they canceled this program after spending several billions on it already.
Didn’t this program get cancelled? 🤷🏻♂️
Well I know what that weird helicopter I seen near Amberly airforce base last year was now
Something tells me a similar chinese version will be in service with PLA in 2 or 3 years.
Do we really need people in aircraft in 2024 for them to take on missions?
This program (FARA) was canceled a few days ago.
The Army’s next go to helicopter is the Valor, not the Raider X..
The Valor went up against the Defiant, not the Raider X (to replace Blackhawks). Different programs with different contenders meant to replace different aircraft.
Becasue enough Ospreys weren't falling from the sky....
@@TheWolfsnack do you also put out milk and cookies for Santa?
They are seriously still in testing phase for three helicopters in this category.
Raider x Invictus 360 and the other one. They have test flights at end of 2024 when Army tests new aircraft
This looks to much like a mini tact sub to tell me it’s the next gen helicopter
USA is still a leader in warfare equipment in all areas of combat.
This is all digital bullshit. I need to see actual flight prowess.
But guys, these weapon platforms are too expensive to develop and mass-produce and they go down with one missile costing a fraction of their expense. Monetarily impractical, these costly projects only serve to make the military industrial complex $RICH$.
This design will fail, just like Osprey. 😂
Your entire analysis of this new helicopter is based on a video game presentation. Come back when the real world trials have been completed. A video game helicopter is not a combat helicopter. Las couple of 'next generation' helicopters couldn't fly or relied on video game presentations with really game CGI.
Technically you are correct. It's all very good relying on CGI presentations until you realize that the aircraft was never built and this was optimistic at best and fantasy at worst.
Watched a pilot shoot an mp5 out of one of these in Iraq….
On the military channel they showed this as a prototype design in 2013 it’s crazy to actually see it being real after all this time
And instead lol cancelled in favor of drone recon.
So,,, using Russian ideas eh! lmfao. Too expensive, too complicated .
... Russia wasn't even the first country to fly a coaxial helicopter... France was. Also do you say anyone building a jet is copying Germany? Didn't think so...
Video quality seems to be dropping
DO THEY HAVE A SKA VERSION THATS EVEN GAYER THAN THIS ONE?
Lost the contract to the valor. Sorry.
Is this video sponsored by Sikorsky?
they stole this from a game in the 2000s.
can it carry a small nuke thats the word
